When this gym moved, I quit and was told that the auto-debits would stop immediately. They did not. Now I have to go back in to the new location (the reason I quit was it is too far away) to again request they stop taking my money.

These guys do not know what they're doing. Completely unorganized, shady billing practices, rude staff and gross locker rooms. Beware!

It's cheap and conveniently located. But it's overcrowded at lunch time. The music is awful that is piped through the place. Sometimes the treadmills work, sometimes not. The TV monitors sometimes work, sometimes not. Lastly, the showers are not maintained well. Some days clean, some days not. A shower head may be malfunctioning, or the hot and cold temps are either too hot or too cold, but never just right.

I was a member of this gym for 5 years when I finally decided to call it quits. I had switched lockers, but the weekend employee apparently didn't update their system. Three days later, I found my locker unlocked and note on it to contact management. Upon reviewing the contents of my locker, I found my tennis shoes, yoga towel and regular towel missing. April (the supposed Operations Manager) then took the description of my missing items and said that she would "keep an eye out for them". When I asked what would happen if they didn't show up, she indicated that the gym is not responsible for my "lost items". Besides the fact that April was completely rude to me, she's indicating that I'm lying about my locker being left open. This stance was supported by Merle and he even said, "I don't understand why you're so upset?". Uh gee, I have no idea why.

The gym sucks anyway, so it was an easy decision to cancel my membership. I would go into all the other issues this gym has, but I think everyone else has pretty much covered it. Based on the other reviews, I will definitely be changing my debit card info.

I can't believe anyone would join.
Their story is old and familiar.
They lie and steal.

Never ever trust them with your credit card info.

I called Seattle and Don Pak there was rude and threatened me to never call there again after I inquired as to why they continued to charge my credit card for 4 months after I quit and they accepted it 'no problem'.

Be very very careful.

I joined. I was promised month to month membership. After many questions, I signed up, believing this.
Sustained an injury. Called manager to share my needing to stop my membeship until further notice (unsure about treatment, possible surgery, unknown time needed away).
Promised ---No problem.
Month to month, right? - Answer: Absolutely.
They were in financial trouble, according to Everett prop owner and they continued to charge my credit card. After calling and asking why- was told that they would get back to me and they would fix that.
Called again....no call back. No call back...
finally, with a new name, called and Don took my phone call but said I was lying about previous phone calls.
Lying. His word. Used more than once.
Be very very careful with what accounts you let them access and be prepared to close that credit card account if you stop your membership.
I would not trust them.

Be very careful if you sign up with Epicenter. They will force you to go in person to cancel your membership - you cannot do it over the phone or email. Merle Gregg the owner stated this is "policy" but really its just a way to delay your cancellation and cheat you out of a month's membership. No integrity - and judging by the other reviews I'm not the only one this has happened to.

I didn't even visit Epicenter, but my boyfriend did to check it out. He gave his contact information and we got passes to try out the gym. I asked a few people who I knew had been members about it, and that was all I needed. I didn't even set foot in there. A few weeks later, my boyfriend gets a call about him owing money for initiation fees and so on... the associate claimed he signed a contract saying he had a 3 day trial and if it was not nullified within that time, it would then be binding contract for a year.... sure, IF HE SIGNED IT! So back and forth we went for WEEKS about the charges. Never did they supply a SIGNED copy of the contract. So finally, just as I was threatening legal action, they said everything was cleared up. A few more weeks pass and I get a call... ME, the person that NEVER even set foot in there....I get a call from COLLECTIONS saying that I owe money! And the collections agency calls my boyfriend's WORK phone for me!!! WHAT THE F?!?! So at this point I'm taking legal action. Stay far far away from this scam!!!

This place is awful.

When I joined Epicenter over two years ago, it was a decent-but-not-great gym. I joined because it was close to my office. Everything at this gym has declined dramatically.

The women's locker rooms smells awful. It is very difficult to find an available locker. The bathrooms are always a mess. Once I notified the front desk that the locker room was a mess and that some stalls were out of toilet tissue. They said they were busy but would get to it. An hour later the bathroom had not been touched - not even to add toilet paper!

The floors have exposed screws coming up that could seriously injure someone. I have notified the management of this issue twice but nothing has been done.

The steam room has been out of order since I can remember.

The showers are always dirty, or out of soap. Gross to find wads of other people's hair in the shower. There are no mats or traction paint in the shower area so falling is a danger.

The workout area has poor air circulation. Fans recirculating stinky air do not count, people. The addition of new machines means that there is room for about 4 people to stretch and do mat work at a time. Totally insufficient, and lame planning.

The personal training program is unbelievably bad. I have had an extremely difficult time scheduling training sessions due to the flakiness of the trainers. When I did meet with them, they were unable to work around my weak knees. This is a common condition, people, get some trainers who can do this. After I seriously injured my back and was unable to train, they offered to set me up with "new" trainers who work with injured clients. Um, those guys didn't return my calls. I left a phone message for the owner, Merle, and he didn't bother returning my call either. Even the new manager jumped to conclusions about my experience there, without even getting the story from me directly. Uh, yeah guy -- do you think your colleagues who are worried about their jobs during the recession are going to point the fingers at themselves? Think about it.

Their accounting system is faulty, as every time I enter the gym, I'm told I am not current on my bills, even though I have automatic payment set up. I emailed the manager listed on the website about it (after he did not return my calls). He did not respond.

I am quitting today on my lunch break. Based on another poster's comment, it looks like I should insist on a copy of my membership cancellation form.

Do. Not. Join. This. Gym.

This gym used to be really clean and a great deal for the price. I haven't gone in a year, and last week, I went back for the first time.

The locker room garbage bins (all of them) were piled high above the top of the bin and overflowing onto the floor. There were old paper towels and water bottles left lying throughout the locker room on the floor and benches (people, pick up after yourselves! jeez!), and even worse, the whole locker room smelled like feet. Gross. And even worse, the only part of the workout that I look forward to - the steam room - was out of order, though as I just read on Yelp, that has apparently been the case for some time now.

When I went up to the workout area, it stank (seriously) of feet also. Um, I know it's a gym and all, but it never used to smell of stinky feet - what's up? One other issue that is a little trivial by comparison - the music being played was sooooo mellow. Seriously mellow. It's kind of hard to get pumped up for a workout to soothing tunes.

I had my workout and left, thinking maybe it was just an off day. But when I went back two days later it was the same story (with more upbeat music).

I don't know what the deal is, maybe just insufficient employees combined with a bad air system, but I'm not thrilled. My workout buddy (who also used to love this gym, but hasn't been in quite a while) and I decided that even the great rates are not sufficient to make us want to stay with this gym, and that we'll tough it out for the rest of the month to make sure we're actually going to stick with this whole gym thing, and if it hasn't changed, we're switching gyms.

Neither day made for an enjoyable experience, and given that I already hate working out, it's really not a big incentive for me to go. I'm hoping that they can improve the place and maintain it the way it was a year ago. If so, I will happily update this review. If not, I'm out.

Do a little research on the president Merle and you'll discover that you probably don't want to support this place. He doesn't care about you, or his employees. My girlfriend worked there and I couldn't believe the way he treated his own employees. The people who enjoy themselves at Epicenter simply haven't ran into the person they're giving their money to yet. They also have sketchy billing policies that sometimes seem less like business practice and more like stealing. You also don't have to take my word for it, visit the "B B B" and check out their "F" rating.

I'm not saying that Epicenter doesn't have problems, but in my three years at the club I've never encountered the horror stories recounted below. That doesn't make the claims untrue, but really, consider the price. There are few no-frills gyms at budget prices around. Expectations should match membership fees. The only things I'd wish for?
1) A steam bath that worked on a regular basis.
2) A "red phone" or some emergency communication device in the upstairs gym. When emergencies arise, someone has to actually run downstairs to call for help. Liability plus.

If the owners cowardly behavior to choose to keep members in the dark about a planned closure in Bellevue wasn't enough, they also continued to have their employees (who were also in the dark) take in new members (along with their money) up until the last day open, knowing that these members would never get to use the Bellevue facility. Employees learned that they had lost their jobs only on the last night open, and even then, it was a select few who were notified by email. Many found out from a co-worker or when they showed up for work and the doors were closed. Neither the owners or the management informed them. They didn't even have the guts to explain to anyone and would not answer calls. Piss poor business practice. It's no wonder the Bellevue location closed. Should you be considering becoming a member or employee of the Seattle location, I would highly recommend staying away. These people have clearly proven that they do not value their members or employees.

I had a one-year contract with this center in Bellevue. I did not get any notice when it was closed. I never renewed my membership with them. Now I am getting calls from LA Fitness, asking for membership dues because Epicenter transferred my name to LA Fitness. I cannot get them to drop my name and quit harassing me. I regret ever became a member of this lousy fitness center to begin with. Their facility in Bellevue was always in need of repair and management nonexistent . I caution anybody who wants to become a member of this fitness center. Don't waste your energy and money.

I was a loyal Bellevue member for two years and when they closed the location (of which we were given no notice) Merle would not transfer my membership to the default club nearby or refund my prepaid dues simply because I registered at the Seattle rather than the Belleuve location. If he treats his customers this way then I question the integrity of the organization. I would consider other options first as you never know when they will close this location with no notice and you will also be left out in the cold.

Sold out Bellevue location, didn't inform members or employees till the day before the permanent closing of Epicenter Bellevue. Members and employees were passed off to equally crappy gym LA Fitness.

This gym is run by Merle and X-NFL'r Sam Adams. Don't know why one would give up their hard earned cash to let a moron run a business. Merle doesn't give a hoot about the employees (unless they are just as heartless as he is) or the members.

Makes no sense, the members are the ones that pay your salary. This is surely a short term money making strategy, the guy is ultimately clueless.

BTW they love to ding you with excessive "fees" and like to tack on services which were never agreed to.

Read the fine print, and monitor your bank accounts. Or make it easy for yourself and go to a gym that respects its members and doesn't dilly-dally around trying to get every last cent from you. There are plenty of better gyms in this city, take your choosing. But don't be taken advantage of!!!

For the price it just can't be beat! Lot's of equipment, clean club. As far the staff, I actually have had many great experiences with them. Don Pak, Rob Isom, and Jerome have made me feel very comfortable and approachable with any questions I have. One of the best gyms I have been a part of!!! Plus TV's and dvd players on their cardio machines....that is nice! :)

Management is unprofessional and childish. If you present a problem, they will start pointing fingers and blame the problem on you. It did not use to be like this until Ivy Thao and other children were brought on board.

Employee retention sucks so don't be surprised when your favorite trainers go missing or the front desk no longer greats you by name.

People aren't friendly here anymore, they've adopted predatory business practices and overall this place is no longer what it used to be.

Epicenter is a little gym that acts and treats its members like a conglomerate chain. Stick with the little ones, but don't choose Epicenter.

Business Response:

Must be 18 or over to enter facility We'd like to notify each manager of the problem in order to solve and prevent it from ever happening again. Members of the Epicenter became members through friends, family, aquaintances, and co-workers. The only real difference is the increase in members and some of the employees.
.

I have been part of many gym's in the past and i have got to say they all lacked on the cleanliness.
This gym however has done a great job on keeping the facility clean and smelling good! I like that they have 4 seperate rooms for their classes instead of just one room for all classes. I have not used their trainers yet but my girlfriend has trained with Tiffany and has seen great results. I would suggest they add some classes on the weekend. So this gym is a deal with all you get and how clean it is.

Without a doubt the best fitness club that I have ever belonged to, and I have belonged to quite a few. From the moment you step into the Epicenter, it is all about you. The staff is highly knowledgeable and always there to help with any questions or concerns you might have. The gym has the most top notch equipment and most of it. This isn't the place that you are waitng forever to get on a treadmill or an elliptical, they have more than enough machines for all of your needs. Just go in and tour the Epicenter, you won't want to leave without becoming a part of the team.

The Epicenter is truly one of the best clubs I have ever been apart of. The staff is courteous and professional! They have a numerous variety of classes ranging from yoga to turbo kick boxing! The customer service is great! I did run into slight billing problem (which was actually my banks fault), but Rob Isom (their operations manager) and Don Pak (their GM) took care of me and corrected the situation for me by actually helping me contact my bank to resolve the issue. Also for my inconvenience (even though it was not their fault) they credited me one month of dues! They are the Nordstrom's of health clubs! My gosh, they have LCD screens on their cardio machines, with DVD players. Let me tell you how fast time passes when your not thinking about it! :) Thank you Epicenter for making my workouts actually enjoyable! I would highly recommend this gym!

The Epicenter is truly one of the best clubs I have ever been apart of. The staff is courteous and professional! They have a numerous variety of classes ranging from yoga to turbo kick boxing! The customer service is great! Pros: Clean, great price, a lot of variety, great staff

Cons: Locker space could be a little bigger!

i have been a member of many different clubs throughout the years, and this gym is by far the best! i've been a member of the epicenter for 5 months now and i absolutely love it! from the moment i stepped in the club, the atmosphere has always been very inviting and everyone from the sales personel and personal trainers to those working at the front desk have been very helpful! although some of the mid-day classes can fill up quickly, i have never encountered any other problems with this gym. no matter what time i have gone in to workout, i have never had any problem finding a machine to workout at. honestly, everything from the lcd screens on the cardio equipment to the digital lockers available are top notch. compared to all the other fitness clubs i looked at in the downtown area, the epicenter had the best facilities at the best prices. if you are looking for a gym with the whole package, the epicenter is your best option in seattle!

First, they overcharged me and it took several months, multiple phone calls, and several emails to get my account corrected. Don Pak, the General Manager, is totally rude and unhelpful. Finally, I emailed the President, Merle, and told her I would be filing a Better Business Bureau complaint if they didn't credit my account- she admitted they were wrong, then CANCELLED MY ACCOUNT because of the complaint. In any case, the locker room is disgusting and I've NEVER seen anyone cleaning it. Plus, the instructors have a high turnover rate (I'd quit too if I worked for them) so classes are unexpectedly cancelled ALL THE TIME. It's ridiculous. STAY AWAY!!

Business Response:

In regards to Accounting All inquiries in regards to accounts are to be handled by the Operations Manager. Don does an awesome job at following up with members who submit notices of disapproval. So is Merle. If you still feel as though you are entitled to a refund, I suggest you really contact Merle. Merle is a man. We audit our janitorial companies who clean the locker rooms after hours so our members aren't distracted during normal business hours. We have changed companies since February.

While this gym is cheap, it is like the Arby's of gyms. It's completely packed at peak times and it's impossible to find certain pieces of equipment (X-trainer) open. There aren't enough lockers and the bathroom area is dirty. The trainers/instructors are really nice but since it's already crowded sometimes they're in the way. It has potential but also has a long way to go to get there.

I have been in and out of gyms for nearly 15 years and I have never found better personal training. I recommend Dan Arvidson. Now I'm avidly working out due to his great coaching and fitness wisdom. The facility is very clean and to the point; work out and get fit, no fuss. They have a huge variety of equiptment and Dan always has a new machine and a new move to show me and he never leaves my side. Plus, it's very affordable especially considering what you get; a healthy mind and body with lasting education. Ask for Dan.

PROS: Personal training, the best equiptment, clean
CONS: Membership rates increase regularly so get in now

I was ripped off . . . and beleive I was not the first. However, the gym is great place to workout (trainers are very good) and the facility has lots to offer.

PROS: Fore warned is fore armed
CONS: Not sure that the managment gives a hoot about this problem

Business Response:

I give a Hoot! I'd like to know what happened and if it was ever resolved? I've been with the company for more than a year, and I can honestly say, it has never happened since I've managed here.
.

the facility decided to distribute wet towels. a complaint to the president Merle Gregg (which the club policy clearly states to do... no complaining to the staff directly, only by email) resulted with Mr. Gregg not addressing the issue of health/safety/hygene, nor with me getting what I paid for (a clean, dry, sanitary towel 100% of the time). He didn't even give me a clear promise to "correct" the problem (how hard is it to say, "no towels, the machine is broken, here a free juice or something from the bar for the inconvience). Instead, he pretty much said "get over it, it was only a towel, the machine was broken" . Almost as if he doesn't care about communicable diseases or good customer service. My advice to you, be careful about this place. I'm joining a new gym.

PROS: good place to get wet towels, only wet with what?!?!?
CONS: find another gym which believes in good sanitation, seattle has many

I have been a member for 2 months, and so far absolutely no complaints at all. They have an odd dues structure, that seems somewhat scammy and amateurish, but since I am only paying $29 a month for a downtown gym with no contract, I cannot complain. the equiptment is new, and I especially like the Fast Fitness Room; made by nautilus it is a 12 station circuit that gets you in and out in 24 minutes. Like Curves (so I am told), but without the cheesy music!

I dont get Cable at home, so the fact that there are LCD's at each station with limited cable means that I can get my fill of VH1 and Jackass while working out! Up until today, I never noticed congestion at the machines, but as the weather was por, it got quite crowded...we will see how it is this winter.

Wow I had looked all over town for a decent gym near my apartment, and for a decent price. I tried to use a trial memberships at another gym to check them out (All-Star Fitness) and the pressure to sign up right away was terrible, and I left feeling yucky. I then took a tour of Epicenter and was very impressed - I got free yoga and various other classes, brand new equipment with video screens & cd/dvd players to entertain you, at only $29 a month. Also it was hands down the cleanest and nicest gym i've been in so far in Seattle. And it's downtown - I love that I can pop pver there after work.

PROS: Clean, inexpensive, new equipment, great classes, right downtown
CONS: No cons I can think of, I love it!

I joined this gym right before it opened in January. It's not like other gyms I've been members of in the past. The classes are great. They offer a range of classes from pilates to turbo kickboxing, from cycling to hip hop. The facilities are hi-tech and BRAND new. This gym offers great rates for new members since it's still new. Join and you will NOT regret it!
