I have tried the Barking Dog several times, and the experience has been consistently disappointing. I have several friends that rave about the place, which is why I went. There are some good things. The food is edible, and the menu has something for everyone. The beer selection is above average, but that should be expected from an "alehouse". That said I would likely avoid another experience at the Barking Dog. The staff has really rubbed me the wrong way on a couple of occasions, and at best seem like they just don't care. I realize everyone has off days, but why spend my money where people don't seem to care?

Pros: Beer Selection, Location

Cons: Staff

.

This place has a decent beer selection. I've gone a few times, wanting to try different ones. The servers know nothing about beer. Nothing. And they are S-L-O-W and not very friendly. I've eaten there once or twice. But if I go to meet friends, I eat before I go. One word..lousy...and not cheap.

Pros: Good Beer Selection, Nice neighbohood feel

Went here for dinner for the first time last night. My friends and I all got some kind of sandwich/burger, and we all rather enjoyed them. Kinda messy, but still good. The waffle fries are fabulous.

Great selection of beers on tap, and apparently Monday nights are $10 pitcher nights. What a deal!

Service was friendly and prompt, and we had no problems getting our waiter's attention.

I had not been to the Barking Dog in a couple of years and not sure what came over me to try it again. I think I was craving the waffle fries which while good, could not overcome what a terrible dining experience this was. You have to really wonder about a restaurant that can embarrass themselves on the salad they served me. I also recall this being a kid-friendly restaurant the last time I was in and even my son wouldn't touch his food this time. To top it off, this service was lousy with attitude. Save your money and enjoy one of the real restaurants in Ballard.

Cons: Lousy Service, disappointing food

This place has gone downhill. Gone are the days of unique menu items, now you get a barely warm piece of premarinated chicken slapped on some wilted lettuce. New ownership took over a while back and things have never been the same. The service was never spectacular, but now you have to actually jump up and down or go up to the bar yourself to get someone to help you out. This place had such potential and now I hope I never have to go back again.

Pros: Neighborhood

Cons: Food, Service

The Barking Dog is a wonderful little neighborhood pub/cafe. It is open, with nice light, and usually the sound of happy children and families. The food is traditional pub fair but the variety of beers, local and foreign is inspired. Mostly, it's just a wonderful place to sit, relax, and enjoy life. It reminds me of Hemingway's A Clean, Well Lighted Place.

We had been huge fans of the Barking Dog for many reasons; The food was always great, the service used to be excellent and the location is fabulous. Now, we have decided that we will not return. We ate there last Sunday afternoon for the last time. For some reason they have "temporarily" stopped making pizza's, which used to be great. We arrived at about 1 and there was one other party in our waitressess section. Despite that, it took her about 10 minutes to come over and bring us water, menus's etc. The funny thing was there were about 3 other employees sitting around just watching people. When we finally got our order of Nachos and a Southwestern Salad with Chicken we were VERY disappointed. Neither dish had a trace of cheese on it and the black beans were literally spooned out the can and onto a pile of lettuce/stale chips. We also had requested some salsa and napkins and finally my husband had to walk up to the bar and get the supplies. Not once did the waitress return to ask if we needed anything or how the food was (she probably already knows it's bad). I know ownership changed a year or two ago, but now I think that the inmates are running the asylum. Too bad for a place that was and could still be very cool.

Cons: indifferent service and not good food

I used to love this local hangout. Great food, great beer, even great wine. My biggest complaint however is the service. What happened? Please get it together.

This place has an awesome beer selection, along with a fantastic fish & chips basket. The seasoning they use on their fish & fries is very tasty. They also have a very good portabello mushroom burger. Cool atmosphere as well.

We've been going to Barking Dog since it first opened and boy has this place gone downhill. I miss the old menu with items like the Vietnamese Sandwich, wraps and creative salads. Now each time I order I get the same horrible pre-marinated chicken slapped on some lackluster lettuce and called a salad.

The new owners should really rethink the changes they've made because at this point the only thing going for this place is that it is the only family friendly restaurant in the neighborhood.

I wanted to title this "(insert another word for becoming violently ill) dog" but citysearch didn't like that... I loved this place when it first opened - the menu was fantastic, most of the sandwiches used Tall Grass breads, the beer selection was fantastic. Our last 2 visits, however (after not having been for several months, and evidently after a menu change) have been utterly disappointing. The last time I was there, I ordered a chicken sandwich and fries - pretty basic, right? I received a hamburger with cold fries - and a server who promptly disappeared for 5-10 minutes. I ended up eating the burger, which was mediocre at best. My wife, seeing the oyster special (fried oyster salad) requested if they could instead make an oyster Po' Boy, which the kitchen agreed to. She received a hot dog bun - a cheap hot dog bun - with 5 oysters in it. No sauce, no condiments, no thought - but she did get the cold fries as well! All this for the cheap, cheap price of $13. Until they get their act together again, and I hear the food has improved, I'll avoid this place like the plague. Twice burned...

Pros: great beer list

Cons: unbelievable decline in food quality since opening

I love a good neighborhood bar, but this isn't it. The beer selection is good, but I have always found the service to be below average, as well as the food. The main downside is the service, I must be getting different waitstaff than the other reviewers but they are usually forgetful and not well put together...

I have been to the barking dog several times now with my family since it reopened. I have experienced long wait times at the door, with a group of only four people. After finally sitting down we waited even longer for our food. The food was mediocre and a bit disappointing. I ordered a steak salad and got the tiniest piece of steak I have ever seen. My husbands fish was warm, but the chips were cold. My brother and sister in law were not terribly impressed with their dishes either. The service was decent. However, we were not impressed by the long waits, small portions, and half cold food.

I love this place, there have been recent updates to the bar, decor, and menu and all are outstanding. We always enjoy having dinner and drinks and know that our food will always be delicous . This a great place to go any day of the week and we are usually able to find an open seat in the bar and if we can't know we will be offered a drink while we wait and enjoy great conversation with the staff, who go out of there way to be friendly and helpful. There is also a new big screen TV that can be enjoyed from just about every seat in the restaurant.

The new menu is fantastic! Love it. Love it! Love it!
The Pepper steak is to die for and so cheap.
The servers were polite, friendly and attentive.
Always great beer!
The new executive chef definitely knows what he's doing. I'll be back this week!
You must go and try it. Great people watching too!
The waitresses are cute too!

The Good:
The beer line up is great. Top notch northwest breweries as well as some good Belgians.

The Bad:
There is a new updated menu and it is missing so many of my favorite items. I don't know what happened but the food has really lost it's quality. They have cut their lunch menu in half. Items like the Fish wrap, Chicken Wrap and a lot of their tasty pizzas are no longer available.
My wife and I were in the other day and were greatly dissappointed with our meals. She ordered a Cobb Salad and it was old ice-burg lettuce with a chicken breast and a little bacon. no eggs, no tomatoes, it was basically a crappy salad that I could have made at home and saved 9 bucks. My meal was the hamburger and fries. It was burned to a black crisp.
We have been back to give it another try, but everytime the food is not what it used to be.

I heard there was a new kitchen manager and maybe a new owner,. I hope this is just a temporary change for the menu. We will not be back to eat anymore. I am not alone, everyone that I know that used to eat there will not go back because of the poor food.

The Ugly:
The serivce is not the greatest. We have had some really good luck there, but sometimes it seems that the server would rather do the crossword puzzel than get us another beer or re-fill our waters.

I want the old Barking Dog back...

I really enjoy this place! One of the best beer selections in the city, intimate neighborhood atmosphere, and I dream about the nachos. I haven't seen the bad service everyone is talking about. Yes, the place can get a little packed, but go early (especially on Friday nights) and you won't have a problem.

I just don't understand how Barking Dog has gotten so many bad reviews. I have been going there since it opened, and I think 9/10 times I order the same thing. It's always consistently GOOD, too. I go with friends who are more daring than I, and they consistently love the food, too. The fries are fantastic, and the fish and chips are the best around. If you are in the market for greasy pub food, this is the place to go. If you want lighter fare, or gourmet food, then go somewhere else. Maybe I'm missing the attempt to get something out of Barking Dog that it isn't. It is a neighborhood pub, where you can go and drink with even the smallest of kids. It's a place to get a great plate of fish and chips (that you probably shouldn't finish all by yourself becuase it comes with a TON of fries), and a very unique beer. It's also a place to just hang out. Why does anyone really care if the waiter isn't the fastest or most efficient person in the world? Yes, I understand that they are supposed to provide you with service, and they will, at their own pace. ENJOY YOUR COMPANY and the fact that you are going out to eat. If you are really just too lazy to cook and want a burger for dinner, swing by McD's on the way home and don't take up the table space. If you are willing to cut the servers a little slack, enjoy the people you came with, and want to enjoy some greasy organic pub fare, then I'd recommend the Barking Dog.

I've been going to the Barking Dog for years. While service has always been marginal at best, the food and drinks were usually very good. Not so anymore. Last night is the last time we will go to this restaurant. Drinks were terrible, food worse and the service is as bad as ever. Save your money.

We have a large group of people who try out new restaurants/pubs every other week and of the 50 or so restaurants we've visited so far, the Barking Dog takes the cake for worst service we've ever had. 20 people can tend to get loud so we stick to places that are good for groups. The waitress was immediately rude to us when we arrived simply because we were a large group and wanted us to sit out on the patio so we didn't 'distrub' the other patrons (it's an Alehouse!). She tried to tell us she wouldn't serve us alcohol but had no legitimate reason so she reluctantly brought us pitchers. When I called later to speak to the supervisor about being treated so poorly, I recieved the same rude treatment and neither the waitress nor supervisor could provide any justification. I'd highly recommend going somewhere else.

My husband and I have attempted to go to Barking Dog, but always ended up there while they were closing. We finally went and ordered a pitcher of beer, goat cheese stuffed portabellas, gumbo and an ostrich burger. Our pitcher came out half full and they refilled it and left a puddle of beer on the table, our portabellas were cold with no dressing on the salad that came with, the gumbo was okay, but the ostrich burger was unseasoned and overcooked (plus the waiter forgot to ask what side I wanted, and sent it out with fries). The waiter was horrible, didn't say hardly anything, set our napkin-wrapped silverware IN the puddle of beer he left on the table from overpouring (but when the head went down, it was about 1/2 full), he asked if I wanted ketchup and mustard and didn't bring them after I told him yes, and I had to go to the bar to get them. He came by when we were nearly finished and asked how the food was. I said "it's alright" with a negative tone, he just walked away. He then gave us the check and proceeded to set that in the puddle of beer as well. Not to mention that the beer was extraordinarily bitter because the keg lines haven't been cleaned in forever. I will NOT be returning.

The food, beverages, and atmosphere make for a home run. Unfortunately the revolving door of servers makes for frequent strike outs! The Dog is the perfect model of inconsistent personal being a recipe for disaster. Maybe management will figure it out someday.

I have tried to like this place, really. In the beginning it was okay overall...service never seemed all there, but I kept telling myself it was fine because I wanted so desperately to like a neighborhood place with a good beer selection. I finally had to stop suspending the reality of truly awful service and mediocre food in the pursuit of a good beer selection. Because no matter how much variety there is, someone does need to come to your table to take your order since I am sure they would frown upon me drawing my own pint at the bar--assuming they would notice. One waitress in particular was so bizarrely hostile to my wife that the only conclusion we could draw was that it was a case of mistake identity. It was odd.

Great hidden location in Ballard, excellent food and beer selection, just stay away from the seafood cakes. Unfortunately, you need to wait forever to get anything. We had to get our own menus, ask for the table to get cleaned. Walk to the bar to get more beer, and there's nothing worse than waiting half an hour to finally pay the bill so you can leave. It's too bad, only restaurant I know that serves great beers but doesn't want to stop by your table. Never going back again......

The beer selection is outstanding here! Although half the beers on the list were no longer available, the server did tell me what they had replaced them with and seemed very knowledgable about the rotating selection. The food on the other hand could use some improvement. It seems to have the potential to be good, but was not. My food was overcooked and my friends food was undercooked. You just can't win with the food here, but a great place for beers....expensive beers.

The service is awful: slow, discourteous, uptight, frumpy, and pretentiously suburban. Its a neighborhood hangout that doesn't fit in with the laid-back culture of the neighborhood. Scotch menu is good, food is ok but trying too hard, but only if you're feeling too lazy to leave the neighborhood and go to an actual restaurant downtown.

Pros: Walking distance

Cons: Overpriced, Uncomfortable, Bad Service

.

I always like a good friendly neiborhood bar. Great place if you are a beer drinker. Nice friendly atmosphere too. A major plus for me. I don't like overly crouded places.

What a great secret hideaway in Ballard! This place has an awesome selection of beers and great food to go along with it! I have been 3 times and it has always been crowded and a little loud, but if you just relax and have a beer its well worth the wait. The servers are especially friendly, although busy, they make the experience very enjoyable and well worth the wait through the crowd.

What a great Ballard secret! Love the food, love the like 20 rotating beers and great scotch selection. I've been there a few times and the food has always been excellent- best fish and chips in town hands down. I love the big flat screen tv for watching games and it's no smoking too. I tell everyone I know about this place. I think they've opened up the patio for summer. too. Big thumbs up!

Don't be fooled by the listing - this is as good a restaurant as any in town, and happens to feature a great array of beers as a wonderful bonus!

Since discovering this hidden gem, I have returned at least once a month (despite a cross-town trip and lots of good places in between) to have the Fish & Chips. The beer batter is wonderful, the fish is generous and tasty, and the chips are great (either fries or their speciality - Tofu Chips) on their own or with the sauce.

Not to mention an incredible array of beers, both on tap and in bottles. None brewed on premises, but they do bring in some of the best kegs, both local and from out of town. Not to be missed!

No smoking, a nice array of table sizes and arrangements, and a neat little patio during the warmer months.

Cute name, cute place. If you want a good
selection of micro brews, this is the place.
It's cozy, friendly and a great place to
stop and meet some new people.

Love the Barking Dog! Choosing from their seasonals, the rotating local taps, and their Belgian ale selection, I couldnt be happier.

The food is fabulous, and the beer and liquor selection impressive, but they just don't make up for the consistently and extremely slow service.

My friends and I just love this place. The food is awesome and the beer selection out of this world. We have been many times now and are always impressed with the service and products. It is crowded most nights - but worth the wait!

The crowds just indicate how badly folks in that 'hood do not want to cook for themselves. It does NOT mean the food is good. I've tried the place 3 o r 4 times to give a fair chance and each time it's a disapointment. Nobody acknowledges you at the door for a long time. People stand looking confused as to what to do. Servers just walk on by. They have this odd idea of everyone serves everyone so basically NOBODY cares about you. I ordered the lemongrass chicken satay and received what looked like giant fried corn dogs with a lemongrass stalk stuck in them! It was mostly "filler" and chicken flakes. Too loud to hear a thing. They say the pizza's good but who dines out for pizza?
