The store has been going through a long renovation they got rid of the cats (my kids hate this change.) But the smell is gone. Brought in plants and the reptiles to the front. Feels like a rainforest when you come in. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. It has become our new favorite place to visit every weekend. Every time we go in I find something new. It's like a store, zoo, museum rolled into one. I read these negative reviews and did not experience that at all. I would say you have to go experience it for yourself.

'MIKE' THE OWNER IS UNFRIENDLY, RUDE AND THREATENING TOWARDS CUSTOMERS.
I was ejected me from the store after he mistakenly interpreted my customer service issue as a personal insult.
Story; I regularly buy feeder rats for our snake. Two feeder rats had died a few hours after I purchased them at his store. One died in our snake cage. The other one was still in its store packaging. My wife and I went back to the store to buy another rat and alert the owner of the issue for his benefit. I didn't bring the dead rats. I was not expecting anything. This had never happenned before, and I had accepted it as a one time occurrence. Mike overheard me tell my wife to only buy one instead of two more rats in case it died again. That's when Mike abruptly intervened without any introduction. In an unfriendly tone, he said his rats are laboratory bred and never have any problems. The deaths had to be caused by the home environment and not his store. I was taken aback by his abruptness and his attitude towards me. Remember, my comment was to my wife, not him. So, I responded by giving him a brief account of the incident. He interrupted me with the 'home environment' excuse again. Annoyed and in defense, I told him he was wrong. That's when mike pointed to the door and told us to 'get out' for insulting him. He refused to discuss anything further. I was embarrassed as I left the store. I believe this man may have a personality disorder.
If you don't like being belittled and embarrassed in front of your family and other customers, don't shop at Aqua Tropics pet store. I have supported Aqua Tropics for many years because I prefer the small business over the big box stores. However, Petsmart and Petco are my only option now. But at least they are friendly and courteous.

What a great place! I went there to look at a bird & had the best pet store experience I have ever had. I am a cautious buyer & always have a million questions to ask when I go to purchase an animal. I usually know more then the pet store, but at Aqua Tropics they were kind, knowledgable & willing to answer all my questions & concerns. I have reptiles & now a bird :) & will be definitely be returning often for all my exotic pet care needs!

I brought in a large number of coral because I was told by the employees that I could trade them for a fish that I wanted. Once they gave me my store credit, I was told to come back for the fish. When I went in to get it the owner told me that the fish was not for sale and that I would have to use my store credit elsewhere. There is absolutely nothing else that I want from that store. The quality and health of their livestock is absolutely horrible. The prices are rediculous. If the owners put a little bit more of the profit into the store and not their pockets to pay for rediculous vehicles this *might* be a decent option for fish supplies. As it stand, absolutely not!

I went into the store the other day to visit the birds and reptiles, and was surprised to see one parakeet frantically biting his feet and falling off the cage bars repeatedly. At first I thought they had a mental condition, since I saw no sign for any other cause. As I looked around, however, they had a green Conure with feathers plucked from his abdomen. Being a bird owner myself, I know it was the result of a combination of stress and being in a cage far too small for him (the cage he was in I wouldn't even use for a cockatiel). There was a pair of parakeets caged next to him, with one of the birds' cere appearing to be disintegrating. It was not at all healthy. I asked one of the employees when the pair had been last taken to the vet, and he said he didn't know. I commented that one of the birds' cere was unhealthy, and he ignored me. Looking into the cause of foot-biting for parakeets, I found out that it is caused by scaly face mites, which burrow into the bird's skin and can result in death if not treated in time. They also have caged five cockatiels into a parakeet-sized cage, and the cockatiels sit at the bottom plucking out each other's tail feathers. There are not enough food dishes, water dishes, or perches for the cockatiels to be comfortable. I have gone ahead and called the police department, and they're going to arrange an investigation. I advise anyone interested in purchasing a pet to pay the extra couple dollars that Petsmart charges in order to ensure your pet is MUCH healthier than those of Aqua Tropics.

If the conditions are so horrible then report them the the SPCA for neglect. If the owners are unwilling to keep basic housekeeping and care, don't stop there, report it. I read your comments and sympathize but not shopping there won't solve the situation.

The store smells awful, and the kittens are always sick looking. they also charge $3 for ONE feeder mouse. I liked going there before to look at the fish and snakes but I know I can find a better deal some place else. Their prices are ridiculous. Most of the employees are super nice though.

This past weekend, my kids and I went to Aqua Tropics to check into feeder mice for my sons snake. Upon entering the store, the overwhelming stench of amonia (urine) smacked us in the face. We made our way back to the reptile section where we observed horrific conditions. There were two adult bearded dragons in the smallest cage available, with no water and they were literally climbing the walls. Then there were the turtles that had no water, no food and the cages were filled with excrement. Many of the lizard and turtle cages were left in this manner. If this is there way of making people feel bad for the critters so that they will sell, it is a rather unnerving marketing ploy. My son (14) called the manager, Crystal, that afternoon and was basically told "whatever". We will NEVER go back there again and will let everyone else know of the deplorable conditions that this store and it's animals are kept in.

I had bought two beautiful but young looking kittens from here. My Story is just the same as Mike T's! First off the place smelled horrible, it was maybe 70 degrees out and inside it was much more. we noticed grime in every corner but thought that it was normal I guess. I was told the place was awesome by some friend of a friend, and I never really visited pet shops before so I thought why not check it out me and my family were looking for companions anyways.
The kittens were in a inclosed area with poop in the corners and all over the box, all of them were scary thin, and it broke my heart to see half of the lil ones had that stink eye problem. I just couldnt believe it! We chose two kittens, one short hair and one long. brought them to the counter were the person walked away from us twice, then decided to help us. They preceded to search for the kittens papers that had "all" their shots and wormed info. They had ones but not the others, so they wrote one up on the spot there! :O They then went in back and grabbed a LARGE box, which made the kittens freak out instantly, when just a second before they were lovey and calm! I was just so shocked in all the behavior that it was a blessing to be home! the Kittens were fine for about a wk then the short haired one got very ill...we rushed him to the vet down the street and sure enough he was just too young to survive the cat parvo! luckaly our other kitten survived because she was just a couple wks older. When I gave the vet their records the vet was shocked to see that they didnt have the proper shots for basic pre-wiened kittens! NO WONDER! I will NEVER GO BACK! Along with all of my friends!

Their fish section is decent. Relatively few dead fish in the tanks (way fewer than Petco, anyway). Some of the staff are very knowledgable about fish care and the ones that aren't are at least honest about it (they don't BS you). They offer free tank water testing, which is great. You have to wait a while to get helped, but it's worth it. They're the best non-chain fish store in the Tri-Cities.

I liked them, they are cheaper than Petsmart and have a bigger variety. I bought my rat here and though I was slightly worried because they were being kept in aquariums, my rattie turned out just fine. I took him to the vet and he got a clean bill of health from him. The only issues I had were A: they didn't have carry home boxes for the small pets, B: they were using pine or cedar for the small animal bedding (can cause respiratory issues) and C: it kind of had a bad smell to it, like to many animals in one place. The staff were helpful and fairly knowledgeable, if they didn't know, they would refer you to another worker.

not the selection of fish they had years ago, also the fish some were double in price compared to other pet stores so look around first. Tanks are nasty looking, smells awful back by the turtle tanks like rot or something dead. High prices for small aquatic plants in comparison to other aquatic stores aqua tropics is way over priced. Mike is a bit rude thinks he knows everything wont refund money even just a few hours after purchase and with a receipt.
unless you are buying reptiles or supplies for i wouldn't go there for fish etc...

I love shopping at AquaTropics because I feel like I matter. Every time I shop at AquaTropics I am treated with respect. My questions are listened to (no matter how silly I feel they are) and answered. I don't feel like a number and I never feel rushed.

I really enjoy what AquaTropics has done to the store recently. They have torn down walls, which really opened up the store and made it feel roomier. There are collections of butterflies and tasteful novelty items spread throughout the store. It has become a fun place to shop.

At AquaTropics I don't have to stay in line once I have made my purchase selection. If I have last minute questions, I can still ask them. AquaTropics only hires knowledgeable individuals and they are available throughout the store. I've shopped at franchise pet stores before and been made to feel like a number, not a face or a name.

I'm a cat person and I've purchased several cats from AquaTropics. If you haven't visited kittens in their cat visitation room, you are missing out on a very enjoyable experience. When I purchased these cats (separate transactions), I was told as much history as was available about them and given any medical history available. The store's warranty and rules of exchange were explained to me.

I also appreciate the deeply discounted Veterinarian that comes to AquaTropics. This is a service available at, but not part of AquaTropics. He comes once a month to provide inexpensive vaccinations and quick well-baby exams. By taking advantage of this service, I was able to make sure my kittens live healthy and happy lives.

If you are looking for a pet store that cares about you and your pet I highly recommend AquaTropics.

I have been to aqua tropics for a number of things. Bearded dragons for my son with a tank and crickets, Fish and Hammsters for my daughters, Food, Fishtanks.

It does have a smell to it almost like a farm or home would with all the animals its hard to keep that many cages clean at one time.

The turtle in the small holding tank belongs to the owner of the store and goes home with him at night to a large pond and home it has its own room.

I'm going to be taking some baby fish in there for sale soon there black and yellow malleys. I went to petco yesterday with my girls to look at the fish. A man there named Jeff told me the 2 Angel fish my 3 year old was looking at were going to be up for adoption the next day at 9am if I came in with the girls I could have them for free. I woke up with a flat tire got it fixed went over to petco and found out the Angel fish were in coraten and that the store was going to be putting them up for sale not adoption like I was told and the guy that was working the day before wasn't even there.

My 3 year old was upset and started to thorw a tamter. but the lady manager there said she will get to the bottom of this with Jeff and let him no that no fish is ever for adoption they will take the fish free of charge but will sale the fish so there is no way I will be taking or shopping there anymore for anything.

I cant believe the service at petco. When I was contdintion my tank I went to aqua tropics and the guy was so patient with me he tested my water every week tell we got it right. It took 12weeks instead of 8 cause I had too many fish(which I got at pet smart) half of them died. After I got the tank condition I went to aqua tropics and got some of there fish. There still alive after 1 year and so my kids and I are going to take are babies there. If they give me store credit I am going to get some angel fish for my baby. after all its not her flate the other store was a jerk to her.

Very good pet store! They seem to always know what to do if your in need of help for your pet, and are very helpful. The prices are more than most chain places (Petco, Petsmart) But you would expect that for how there animals seem to stay alive better...Replying to Someone Else's post. THE STORE SMELLS LIKE ANIMALS. If you have ever owned a pet in your life, you'd know they don't smell like roses. Dogs and cats alone aren't great smelling, so you cant really blame it on filth...

This place is the one-stop shop in the Tri-Cities for fish. They have some of the most beautiful fish available there and have a great selection of reptiles too. The staff there is very knowledgable and very helpful. They even do tours for young children and teach them about the animals there. Very great business!
