WOW! I checked on the review on this place. And its great. huge portions, small feel, good service. I went for our anniversary it was lovely, we sat in a nice booth. I had the shiskabobs with ribeye and filet. It was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Topped with this cheese. Wonderful! I would go back and recommend to anyone! My hubby loved his too!

Ooooooh the Lemon drop martinis are fabulous!
Order one before you look at the menu.
You have to have the steak salad and then another lemon drop.
Instead of dessert, have another lemon drop. They are the best you will ever taste.

We go out to dinner just about every weekend and we try to go to a different place each time. Jak's Grill might be the best steak we have ever had in Seattle. My husband ordered the 40oz porterhouse and I had the petite filet. Both were excellent and cooked to perfection. The appetizers and sides were also AMAZING. The only "con" would be that the bread that they give you is not that great, but who cares...everything else was A+. I had a couple of lemon drop martinis and they were incredible and very reasonably priced! Everything was so delicious we had to order dessert and the desserts did not disappoint. I found the staff to be very friendly and the atmosphere was very relaxed, not pretentious at all. We will definitely return very soon.

The prime rib is oh so delicious. Perfect portions. Prices that are favorable. It's a comfortable dining room with great ambiance. Truly, Jak's is one of West Seattle's finest. You can't make reservations so there might be a bit of a wait: but wait it out, you will not be sorry!

In the past month I have had (3) brunches and a lunch and loved it until this past Monday. My 85 yr old mother in law went in at 4:45pm to meet my wife, son and his girlfriend. She was told she couldn't sit down, couldn't get a table, they would not speak to her when she asked a question. My wife came at 5:05 pm and was told they couldn't get a table for (4), had to eat in the bar where there was no space with the exception of a table for four. After conversations, the table was set and they agreed (2) would have happy hour and when the other two arrived pay full price. Well, they waited and when they finally gave their drink order they were told they couldn't be served. Quietly they both rose and said to hostess and server, "with the state of the economy I would think customer service would be first and foremost" and left. They went next door to the Matador, were greeted warmly, seated, drink order take and food order as well. Excellent meal and we've vowed not to go back until the Manager is apprised of the situation.

I took my boyfriend to Jak's Grill for his birthday because we had both been wanting to try it. Overall the experience was very nice. The hostess was very accomodating - moving us to another booth at our request when we were first seated. Our server was gracious as well - she explained the differences in the cuts of steak and was quick to ask us if we'd like more drinks when they were getting low. The bread did taste stale, which was a shame but not a huge deal. My boyfriend loved his steak, the chef prepared it to a perfect medium rare. My Salmon entree, on the other hand, which I asked to be prepared Medium Rare as well, came out Well done. It had close to no moistness and very little flavor - which is what happens when you overcook fish. The only other thing that was not enjoyable was the vegetable - some huge pieces of broccoli and carrot with little to no flavor - quite unappetizing. On a good note, we both loved the spinach salads and our wine was teriffic as well.

Living a couple blocks away from Jak's Grill, I've had the pleasure of enjoying my carnivorous side at JaK's Grill in West Seattle. While they've raised their prices over the years, they have still remained one of the best steakhouses in the greater Seattle area and certain, I think, the best steakhouse, dollar for dollar. JaK's supposedly gets their midwestern beef from the same suppliers as El Goucho's and other fine steakhouses. True or not, I've never met a piece of beef there I've never liked.
The service is friendly and the atmosphere is great. You can come causual or dressed to the nines and you'll feel at home. Very nice wine selection as well.
About the only negative thing I can say about JaK's is that they simply do not take reservations. Fridays and Saturdays, you should plan to get their early or plan to wait. Worth the wait? Simply put. YES. The other negative thing is that while they server an awesome Rib Eye, they do not have prime rib itself, which is usually my go to cut of meat.
They're meals are just that, not the Ala Carte style found in the uber high end steakhouses. So you'll get a nice salad, vegies and your choice of rice, baker load up or what is becoming my favorite, potato pancake.
They have three locations and while I've not tried the other two, the West Seattle locale is a keeper for me.

Got sick the last time I ate there. Terrible wait and bad service. The hostess was hostile and did not care about the long wait. We have had good experiences before and the food was good. This last time, it was crowded and the service was bad. I would not go in a large group or after 6:30. The wait can be up to 2 hours. We will not return.

The Laurel Hurst location My original review was typed over, or, may have been deleted. But I will say it again. In taking friends to JaK's in Laurelhurst, my girls' brother went to the bathroom, and found himself chattering it up with one of the line cooks/supervisor Ron or Ronny whatever.
Well, this person didn't wash their hands upon leaving the bathroom, after handeling himself using the urinal. I'd approached the hostess to let her know to tell one of the management staff what had just happened. She shrugged and said Oh they wash their hands in the kitchen!!!! GROSS!!!!! ALL THAT SWAM AROUND IN MY HEAD, WAS THE CHILDREN, and that they would be severely ill. If this kitchen supervisor didn't wash in the bathroom, you know he didn't in the kitchen. Coming in contact with thr kitchen doors, countertops, plates, his apron, UTENSILS.....MY GOD!!!!WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!! When having an establishment that caters food and beverages to the public you commit yourself to high standards of sanitation, so food borne illness can be controlled, but keep in mind that children and the elderly are more prone to becoming fatally ill, causing death. There have been countless cases of contageons when hands are not cleaned, nor surfaces sanitized within the criteria of the Dept. of Health . Steve and I dropped by for a beer after the job, creatures of habit, we gave JaK's a chance. Before the bartender walks the length of the bar, we look up.......and there is the guy, the same guy,.... which told a bigger story. Seeing as how we never received the courtesy of a manager coming to our table the night of the discovery in the bathroom,.. he's still working here, needless to say, we left. I can not let this go! I have to say how sickening it is for something like this not to have been attended to. If anyone asks me about dining at JaK's, I will be nothing but forth coming. This particilar location is not safe, are the other two??

Pros: Unquestionably Trusted Great Safe Food......Once

Cons: What's that on your plate?

THE FOOD AND SERVICE AT JAKS IS GREAT! THE ONLY THING THAT RUINS THE NIGHT IS LISTENING TO THE TALL CHEF WITH THE CELL PHONE IN HIS EAR YELLING AT THE SERVERS! FOR THE PRICES THEY ASK AT JAKS IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE CHEF WOULD BE A LITTLE MORE WILLING TO MAKE SPECIAL REQUESTS. ( MY WIFE IS A LITTLE FUSSY). HE JUST MAKES THE PLACE LESS COMFORTABLE THAN IT SHOULD BE. WHEN HE GOES...WE WILL BE BACK!
THANK YOU TO OUR SERVER FOR ALL SHE DOES TO MAKE PEOPLE AT HOME WHILE AT JAKS! GREAT SERVER!

Best steak in Seattle. The skewers are to die for. They cook a little on the rare side at this place, but they usually warn you before you order. The potatoe pancakes are a work of art. I dream about them!

You won't be sad that you had a special dinner at Jaks with a loved one. Or spent the money for the delectable treats they offer.

Great wine menu too, with excellent customer service. The only drawback is the lack of reservations. Be prepared to wait a long time for a table. Also, sometimes the host can be a little cold and uninviting. This is the only issue I have encountered with the staff, however,

I had a wonderful dinner the other night. Sat at the bar with a couple friends. Had the pork medallions. The bartender was cool, i think her name is Leslie. The only thing i found weird was the open kitchen. Where i am into the open kitchen as an idea i was distracted by the tall chef with the ear piece yelling alot. Why so angry dude. Other than that is was awesome...i know it's a steak house but try the pork medallions. Yum.

My husband and I have only recently moved to the West Seattle neighborhood and one of the first places we were told to go was Jak's. We loved our dinner experience, both getting fab steaks, wine and dessert for less than what we would spend on drinks and appetizers downtown... when we were there we were told about the newly started brunch so we decided to check it out. We were both very impressed... my husband had a fillet & Bearnaise Benedict on those potato cakes they are know for and i had the biscuits and gravy- yummy! Our lively yet attentive curly haired server really took good care of us, making sure our couple buck bloody mary's
were never empty:) we both will be going back to for both the food and the service.

I have been in about 4 times, everytime i get seated very fast. Even when it's busy! The Chefs have really got the cooking of the food down to an art. The only thing I dont like is the salad Dressing. Small complaint it is very lacking in taste. But, Steaks are always cooked to perfection.....Will recommend and be back!!

Interesting. My wife and I went out on a date night from the kids and had a great meal and overall experience at JaKs (W. Seattle) as anticipated. Upon coming to the CitySearch site to post my compliments to the JaKs family, I found it very interesting about a couple of the reviews from others who felt their experience was sub par. In one case, a person and his wife went out to dinner at a time when the kitchen would be closing and yet feel their service was not satisfactory? From what I understand, JaKs was formed with the objective of being a neighborhood place where every guest is treated equally and are exposed to a meal and atmosphere all with a value that is easily the best in town. I am continually impressed that while JaKs continues to expand its menu, offer more creative specials, and now operating 3 locations that their food, service and value is STILL the best.. Maybe these posers who want the world to stop at their feet can go downtown and rub noses with the other big timers and leave our our secret (JaKs) to those of us who appreciate it.

I recommend this to anyone - any time!

My wife and I have been going to Jak's for several years now. In the past the service has always been great - we were greeted with a smile, most everyone knew our name and/or order, and the food was not just a great value but always cooked to perfection. In the past year or so this place has gone down hill quickly. Not only has the old familiar staff been replaced by a group that is rude and incompetent, but the food is inconsistent and the prices have all but doubled. We recently decided to give Jak's one last chance and went in a few days ago for our anniversary. Granted we arrived a bit later in the evening, but we still had to wait and we were completely ignored by the bartender. When we finally were seated our server seemed to be rushing us to order and we barely got a chance to review the menu or specials for all the recent changes. Our food then came out so quickly we were not done with our salads when the steaks arrived at the table. We quickly discovered that our steaks were severely undercooked, but were told the kitchen was closed for the evening when we asked that they be sent back and cooked as we asked. In disgust we decided to box our food and take it home to try and fix it ourselves. When I went to get the car, I came back to discover the door had been locked with my wife still inside! I knocked for several minutes until the manager finally came and let me in. She apologized profusely but the apology was clouded over by the fact that she had clearly been drinking and really was nothing more than obnoxious. I have no idea what happened to this once quaint neighborhood staple! After a recent dining experience to another local steak house, we have decided it's worth the drive and money to get the quality and service that we USED to get at Jak's.

My wife and I have been to Jak's before, but I am not sure we will ever go again. We went last weekend and had the worst, most inattentive, service ever. Our server Christina kept disappearing and we had to go downstairs to locate her TWICE! The first time the bartender helped us and the second time the hostess found our check, and get this our server WAS SITTING DOWN TALKING THE WHOLE TIME! The food was great, and the service is usally good here, but not this night. After all this she was pretty rude ABOUT THE FACT WE ASKED THE HOSTESS FOR OUR CHECK! WE won't be going back for awhile.

JaKs in West Seattle is a great spot for a great steak. I had the 15 oz Top Sirloin which was cooked to perfection and had incredible flavor. Our table also had the Fillet and Rib Eye, both of which were melt in your mouth. The service was excellent and the place was hopping even on a Tuesday night.
What really blew me away was the fact that not only was the steak as good as any "steakhouse" in Seattle, but the price was much lower than expected and all items came with a soup/salad, potatoe and vegetable. What a relief in not having to pay $7.00 for someone to add a spoon full of cream spinach alongside your steak and the baked potatoe we were served were huge. The only thing that could improved on was the salad, simply Iceberg lettuce and dressing. Otherwise, fantastic value and a steak to die for.

Pros: Full meal at a Steakhouse, excellent value, great service

Cons: boring salad, no reservations

It seems sad that such a highly recommended restaurant can disregard customer service the way Jak's did. The manager, Nick Scott, not only avoided the fact that they took the wrong order, but he did not show he wanted to correct the problem. He was condescending in his remarks stating "you would know the difference between a 21oz and 40oz steak" continuing with "the 40oz is as big as your head!" His remark was appalling. How can the restaurant give the customer the responsibility of measuring the size of their portions? If we ordered steak and got seafood, and didn't report this until after the fact, then we would be at fault. But not knowing that we were cheated until after receiving the bill was an honest ignorance of measurement. The manager, with his rude attitude, obviously lacked the skills needed to professionally deal with the situation, thus gave a bad image for the restaurant. Perhaps it was just the manager who does not value customer service, but isn't any one employee at Jak's representative of the whole restaurant? Although the steak was good, the whole experience was not worth the money or bad treatment. Basically, we ended up paying for the restaurant's mistake. I have never walked out of any restaurant feeling so disappointed and unfairly treated. As long as Jak's continues to disvalue their customers, I will not go back.

Jak's is my favorite steak restaurant, and last night my boyfriend and I met some friends for dinner there. The food was good, as usual, but we noticed that the 40 oz. porterhouse which our friends had ordered to share looked fairly small. We commented on it to each other a couple of times, and our friends were still a little hungry afterward, but overall we were happy with our food, as usual. When the bill came, it confirmed that they had indeed given them the smaller porterhouse, even though they had ordered the larger portion. It must have been a very simple mistake made by our server. We mentioned it to the server, because they were disappointed to not have gotten what they ordered (and the price was a much better deal for the 40 oz than the 20 oz, only a $10 difference). She went away to talk to the manager who came over to our table and basically scoffed at us for not having identified the problem at the beginning of the meal. He was defensive and condescending, acting like we were running some kind of scam, which was so surprising given that it was not a very big problem. Unfortunately he made it a bigger problem by declaring "well, you pay for what you get" and walking away. Really he could have just said a sincere "I'm sorry" and offered a dessert or maybe a coupon for next time, instead he and our server totally ignored our table after that, we couldn't even get anyone to come over to take the bill to run our cards. It is so sad that one ineffective manager (lacking the most basic customer service skills) could leave such a bad taste in our mouths, when Jak's is such a great restaurant. In the past I have worked as a server at several restaurants in Seattle, and neither I nor my managers would ever have treated customers that way, I was truly shocked. Hopefully the restaurant will realize their mistake in hiring him, he will not be good for their business.

After reading several reviews, I was looking forward to my first experience at Jaks. It was a dissapointment. Contrary to some reviews the service was good, they called me on my phone when the table was ready and the server was friendly. It was the food that didn't meet the expectations. The bread was ok, the salad was just ice berg lettuce, the mashed potatoes were bland, the wine was overpriced and the steak was undercooked. I ordered the Jaks cut filet cooked medium. When I got it, it was a large cut and looked great. When I cut into it, it was half raw, cooked rare at best. It was like they seared it and forgot to cook it over lower heat. I asked the server if they could put it back on the grill and when it came back it made its way up to maybe medium rare. I obviously don't want my steak over cooked, but I also don't want it cooked like Ahi. My $6 burrito at Chipotle was a more satisfying experience. They may have had an off night, but next time if I want to get a good steak at a value I'll go to Outback, if I want a quality steak dinner, I'll go to Ruths Chris.

I was on a first date and was honestly a little skeptical we wouldn't be waiting more than a half hour as the place was hopping on a Friday night. But, we were seated promptly and my first night at Jak's began! Our server was great. She was knowledgeable without being pretentious and had a great sense of humor. I had the petite filet which was perfectly cooked med-rae. The mashed potatoes were great too. I definitely didn't need a doggie bag! All in all, for the price and the quality, it's hands down that Jak's is the winner! Ilove the atmosphere too! Chill for such good food!

Jak?s doesn?t seem to care about customer service or satisfaction. They do like their policies though.

Immediately upon our arrival for a birthday dinner had a very snooty hostess proudly recite the rules on reservations: they don?t take them, seating: not until your entire party has arrived, and birthdays: nothing special. Asked to speak to the manager about being seated since one person in our group of 6 (including a toddler) would be arriving shortly and was again condescendingly enlightened on their aforementioned sacred policies. A dispute ensued and the manager made no attempt to rectify the situation. Happy Birthday to you!

I can?t seem to understand the reasoning behind these rules ? if you choose not to take reservations, why not at least seat partial parties and let them order drinks and appetizers while they wait for the rest of their group? Instead, customers are forced to wait on a bench and forbidden from spending money - even when no other parties are waiting. Seems like poor judgment to me.

To summarize:
They don?t take reservations.
They won?t seat you unless your entire group arrives together.
They don?t take American Express.

They don?t need your business.

Four of us went to West Seattle's JaK Restaurant Monday night 11/13/2006. Cold and rainy outside, warm and friendly inside. We were seated immediately in a booth by the hostess, Annie, and greeted by a nice server named Anya. After hearing the evenings specials, the guys ordered JaK's burgers, my Mom ordered the steak sandwich, and I had the Ribeye. Everything was prepared exactly as requested and was just delicious! My Mom is very hard to please when it comes to steaks and she loved hers. The servings were huge and included bread, salad, veggies, and several choices of potato to accompany the entree(not all came with the burgers). Delicious! Followed by one killer piece of chocolate cake that all four of us just had a few bites apiece. The only minor problem was too much salt on the veggies for my taste. The place is a little noisy(it is all bare wood) but don't let that stop you from enjoying one good steak or burger. My baked potato had
everything on it from cheese to sour cream and bacon bits. And my salad, though plain, was yummy with vinagrette. The manager,Kathy, checked on us several times and helped make our experience very nice. We all highly recommend this restaurant if you love great beef!

I have been to many steaks joints in this city with everyone offering their opinion on which one is the best. After my extensive research, I have come to the conclusion that Jak's Grill is the best Seattle has to offer. Not only are the steaks so tender they practically melt in your mouth they are seasoned to perfection. Don't even think of asking for A-1 steak sauce! In fact you will find nothing of the sort on your table. Your beautiful, thick, perfectly prepared steak comes accompanied with the most delicious potato pancakes ever made. With all this perfectuon going on, there has to be at least a couple of flaws, right? While Jak's makes the aboslute best steak, hands down, you will get a salad that is so plain it is almost vile. Some chopped up iceberg lettuce and watering dressing on top. That's it. No, onion, no sliced carrot, no nothing. Just lettuce and dressing. Then they will set on your table ice cold sourdough and a cold pat of butter. That was depressing to see as for a place of this sort you would expect everything to be as top notched as their steaks, but this is not the case. The service is great although some of the servers tend to rush you a bit. But all in all, a great place that I would go to often.

Anytime a good friend comes to town there's always an excuse to go to Jak's, great service great ambience and great food. If you are hanging with us and we take you there... you know you are well regarded. Doesn't matter if you get the full steak meal or the steak sandwhich you can count on it to be top drawer!! My favorite is the salmon with garlic potatoes, get in my tummy yummy!!

Jak's is a great steakhouse but their no-reservation rule has definitely kept me from going in as much as I normally would, especially when I have a party of 6 people or more (which is fairly often for me with business dinners, and recently for a family birthday celebration). If they accepted reservations for large parties I'd be a regular!

I had dinner here with my girlfriend two months ago, and Jak's Grill lived up to all the review on this site. They had, hands-down, some of the best steak I had ever had, matching some of the more well-known classy places around. To be fair, I judge a steakhouse more on the quality of its beef than anything else, but service was polite and prompt and was overall a great experience. Highly recommended!

More than one person has complained about trouble getting a table. It's simple. Get there early and get on the list. There is no preferential treatment for local regulars. I am one and get no such treatment. It's very popular and there is a reason why. The food and service are always outstanding. The steaks stand up to anyone's except maybe the Met. The salmon is out of this world. The fish specials are always great too. Go to JaK's, get on the list, go across the street or next door and get a cocktail. They will gladly call your cell phone when your table is available. That is what the locals have learned and that is what we do. We wait patiently. If that's not for you, then I guess it's a pleasure you'll have to do without.

If you are looking for a place to eat dinner in less than 2 hours this is not the right place to go. On a weeknight, 9pm at night, the wait was still 1 hour to get a table. The hostess advised it would only be 30 minutes, we had to wait about 20 just to get a seat at the tiny bar and then continued to wait another 40 minutes. I personally don't think the wait for a table was worth it for the food. Yes, it was a good steak but we could have driven a couple more miles and been seated and received better service for the same quality of steak and comparable price. Once we were seated the service was prompt but getting the table was the tricky part. They don't take reservations so it's just up to who is in line before you.

A wonderful place! Superb steaks and burgers, and the wait isn't a problem. Had to laugh at the person who said that they had to wait a couple of hours to be seated for a "family dinner"--and that they had a two-week-old baby with them. I'm never quite sure why people seem to think that other diners will be delighted to listen to their screaming children. Hopefully, the management at Jak's agrees...

Kudos to a great restaurant!

We should have read the reviews before going to Jak's for a family birthday dinner. As previously described the resturant does not take reservations and the seating is controlled by two very uninterested hostices. This is definaltely a "Local's place" who get preferencial seating. We were promised a table for six (plus a two week old baby) in two hours. We signed in at 6:45pm and were seated at 9:55pm! It was obvious that people who came in later were seated before us. The bar tender was wonderful and tried to help once we complianed. A complimentary bottle of wine and appitizers. Once at a table - the service and food were very good. Too bad there was no one of responsibility in charge last night. Will not be going back.

We have learned not to go to Jaks during peak times because of the long waits. On this occasion we arrived at the end of the dinner period and were informed of a 45 minute wait. We decided to wait, sure that the dinner rush was ending. After an hour wait we were ushered into a half empty restaurant and seated at a small table for two. I asked if we could have one of three empty booths that we passed, but no, they were needed for other people that never appeared. On the way out, I noticed that the waiting list was left out on the counter. I located our name and observed that there were only two other names listed after ours. Bottom line: If you dont want to get Jakd around on seating, avoid this restaurant unless you are sure that its not busy when you arrive.

Since 2000, I have tried to go to Jaks three times more than I have actually gotten in. Had to wait up to an hour for a party of 2 but always had good food & service. I'd go more often but don't want to give them any more of my time & money until they care more about "customer experience." Don't take reservations, that's ok but how do you have a 3 hour wait minutes after the doors open? Is there a private list? Are 3 hours worth of people in line before the doors open? Months ago, Jaks closed for remodeling, the front desk is closer to the front door but there are no extra seats that I can see, the wait is just as long. Was the front desk moved closer to the front door so people who are turned away don't have as far to walk?

.

for those of you who don't like the wait at JaK's then stay home, that will make it easier for those of us who live in West Seattle and love to eat here to get in. We even have a little secret for beating the crowd. We will drop by the restaurant on the way home from work and put our name on the list, then go home for a cocktail. They will call us about 10 minutes before our table is ready, leaving plenty of time to finish our drink and get to the restaurant.

Jak's is a great place to have a steak. Great value for the prime meat they serve you too compared to expensive downtown meat palaces. Service is friendly and sincere. You'll get the same level of service whether you order a hamburger or the filet mignon.

One tip to avoid an inevitable wait is to simply go early before 6:30pm or so. Food comes quick so this is an ideal place if you don't want to spend 2 hours eating dinner.

Pros: great prime meat, sincere service, large portions

The service was fast the food was great. The price was on average $60 for two so the $$ rating should be $$$. All the specials were sold out be 8:30 when we arrived and the place was packed. All being said and done this place is a GREAT steak house and worth the trip to west seattle.
