I often drove by this location and decided I couldn't bring myself to wait inline for food despite hearing how great it was. I finally was persauded to wait and am glad I did, even though I did have to wait in line for nearly a half hour on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon around 2 pm. The hours make it hard to get in to this restuarant and perhaps also increase the demand as they are closed on Sundays. Thankfully there is now a 2nd location in Ballard. I hear they even run out of sandwhiches some days. Street parking is the only option and the dining area is super small so be prepared to get your food to go and eat sitting on the street. Menu is now available online so it might be a good idea to figure out what you want before you go, so you don't make the wait longer for others. I personally enjoyed the tofu sandwhich, the carmelized onions are scrumptious, I definetely think I need extra next time. My friend recommends the prawns, but everyone seems to have a favorite. Plan accordingly.

Cons: small interior, long wait, closed Sundays, cash only

After we waited in a line for ~ 40 minutes, we got our sandwiches to go because there was no place to sit. Although, even if there had been a place to sit, I'm not sure I would want to sit there. There was a constant draft from the open door and it just felt a little messy in terms of cleanliness. Good if your down for a hearty messy sandwich, but I'm not too into the idea of sauted onions dripping down my chin and sopping up the oils and sauces with the wet wipes they have available. I had to find out what all the rave was about, but it was a good sandwich overall, just not the greatest if you're turned off with greasy food. I ordered the aioli sauce on the side (just to try), and when we got home, I blotted the onions from my chicken breast sandwich and saved half for another meal. My husband got the classic pulled pork and THAT was a MESSY sandwich! Good overall, but not the best sandwich place I've eaten at.

Pros: taste, texture, spices, not to $$

Cons: long wait, limited seating, lacking ambiance

This hole in the wall place serves up the best cuban pork sandwiches I've ever had. Every trip back to seattle involves a visit to Paseo

The biggest drawback to Paseos is finding it the first time. There is no big sign to tell you where they are. You just have to look for the line at lunchtime. Their pulled port Cuban sandwiches are the best I have found. Don't wait until the end of lunch, sometimes they run out. It is helpful to call ahead and order. Definitely a place we return to time and again.

The most amazing sandwiches ever! Definitely one of the best hidden local spots in Seatle. I love the tofu sandwich... and you definitely can't beat the prices!

Paseo's Caribbean Restaurant, located in Freemont has fantastic sandwiches. It's a little hut randomly located on Freemont ave. There isn't much of any seating though the sandwiches are great, served with corn on the cob.

I was there a few weeks ago because I was visiting Seattle and had read the rave reviews this place had gotten. I have to say that the Midnight Cuban was the most phenomenal sandwich EVER! I was literally at a loss for words. The next time I go to Seattle, I will be there at least once a day! The guy taking the order was a little cocky but that awesome sandwich made me forget all about that (enough that I'd go back). There are only about 6 small tables in the restaurant so I wouldn't plan on eating there Iif there you're lucky you can maybe get a table) but you can always take it to go. If you are going to be anywhere near this place, you have to make sure that you go and get a Midnight Cuban!

Listen, I have had great customer service at the food was marginal at best. Paseo's is simply the best food in town period! Listen if youwant to make an impression on a hot lady, go to Icon or some other trendy spot get her all tipsy on wine and drinks. But if you want some good food or a place to take out-of town friends on a casual Saturday you go to Paseo. enjoy an eccletic group of people, stand in line make good conversation and then prepare to enjoy an incredible sandwhich or meal. I would say yougotta have the garlic baguette thingy and onions and more onions. I havebeen a faithful customer since it first opened and youcould only get a half chicken with incredible black beans, a salad and corn that would make you eat the husk if possible.

now the menu has grown...... a lot but if you are a first timer i say begin how paseo began with a half chicken. you will be back many many more times to enjoy the rest but start there!

Oh and as far as customer service goes....... I don't care how you treat me just dont make me waste my money and time. I havenever regretted having to go get cash not once and everytime I go i leave satisfied. get the sticks out your butts and just let some thing slide. Have you seen how they work back there?

I have the same rave reviews of the sandwiches as everyone else. I drive way out of my way at least a few times a month for these delicious sandwiches. But... as others have pointed out, they really need to improve on customer service. I usually go for lunch because the few times I came there after 5p, they were out of bread. Not sure how you run out of bread when you sell sandwiches, and from reading other reviews, it seems this is the norm for this place. Seriously, how hard is it to order more bread. I would love for someone who works there to reply to all these postings on this issue. Lastly, I would say it's 50/50 on if the staff there is in a good mood and treats you decently or decides to be rude and chat away with other coworkers with the line out the door.
I do have to sum up that the sandwiches are great or I wouldn't keep going back, but it would be nice to feel like they wanted customers as opposed being annoyed that you are there sometimes.

We arrived at Paseo shortly after it started snowing to find it so crowded that people were waiting outside in the snow for their food. After we ordered and started waiting ourselves, more and more people just kept filing in, and the prospect of a wait and nowhere to sit didn't discourage anyone. I can completely understand why.
I am comfortable in saying that Paseo has the best sandwiches in the city. I will happily return and wait again just to keep experiencing them. The meat was cooked to perfection, the caramelized onions delicious. They had just the right amount of heat. One sandwich by itself was enough to satisfy, and for a very good price.
The only real problem is if you want to dine in, you might have trouble getting a table. The restaurant is very small, with about enough room to sit less than a dozen people. It seemed like people tended to clear out as soon as they were done eating, so the people waiting could grab a place to sit by the time their food came out. But it would be better if you plan for take out.
The staff were friendly and had a good attitude despite the crowds. The same could be said for the customers, which created a warm, relaxed atmosphere.
Not recommended for people who don't like crowds, waiting, or messy food. For those of us who like fun and good food, trying Paseo is a must.

I have been 3x in the last month, and each time they were out of sandwiches! Does this happen to others? I think the sandwiches are the best I have had, but it is maddening to drive there and have the sandwiches be unavailable. I recommend calling ahead.

We were really excited to go and try their famous sandwiches. We got there at 5:30 and they were out of bread. Not happy. I tried their garlic prawn dinner and hubby tried pork dinner. His was awesome..mine okay but I will never get it again. I really dug the bean soup and salad was great. Filled up fast and everybody was disappointed about the bread situation. Will go back and try when they are able to make sandwiches. I am hopeful I will be able to give it 5 stars like everyone else.

I adore Paseo. Fabulous Nosh! I even had them "cater" my Birthday in 2007.

I have tried most everything on the menu, and my senses were delighted by it all. Yes the pork sadwich is amazing, but then so is everything else.

The staff are pleasant, and efficient. The place is clean. The one major downer is that there really isn't much seating, and it's loud and cramped if you do decide to eat there. I suggest you take your food down to the park and eat it, or if it's inclement, go home and enjoy your pork sandwich with your libation of choice. The one minor downer is that they are closed Sunday and Monday and I am craving some right now!

I am from Iowa and am in town for the weekend. I found out about Pesao's via this Web site and was really glad I did! There are only about 4 tables for dining in however the service was really quick and the sandwich was one of the best I have probably had at only about 7 bucks.

Do yourself a favor and check them out!

Paseo has something very special. Yes - you will have to wait in line, and yes - you'll have to bring cash, and yes - if you try to call ahead during their lunch rush you are likely to be put on hold or ignored. The problems some reviewers have with this place (itsthemirrors) are the product of a coddled comsumerist culture that is refreshingly absent from a place like Paseo. Paseo doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is, and it is an absolutely AMAZING sandwich shop. The Midnight Cuban Press sandwich is crave-worthy. I lived around the corner from a Cuban grocery and cafe in Chicago (La Unica) and their Sandwiches Cubanos were excellent, and certainly more authentic than Paseo, but put the two in front of me and I will go for the Paseo sandwich every time. A creative and flavorful interpretation of a classic with quality ingredients. They put a lot of care into crafting their food, and as far as I'm concerned they can operate however they choose. And for the record, I've never been treated poorly here - the service is secondary for sure, but that owes itself to the fact that there isn't a whole lot of time for chit-chat and unnecessary formalities when you've got a line out the door all day long. People like itsthemirrors who can't appreciate a good thing should just stay away - I'd venture to guess he's just the sort of customer they don't care to cater to anyway.

Everyone in Seattle can tell you that the aioli that drips from all of Paseo's dishes is fantastic. These sandwiches are really, really good; however, after just returning from a Paseo's "run" this morning, I felt compelled to sign up for an account on CitySearch and describe how I feel about this place.

The attention to the customer at this joint is atrocious. After going here every few weeks for the last year, I must arrive at the conclusion that the owner has specifically set a guideline of "screw 'em, they'll keep coming, we're so good that we don't have to be nice." Let's look at the evidence:

1. The place doesn't take credit cards. Come on! What century are we in? The owner's blithe unawareness of the revenue lost by people who avoid going to Paseo because of the prerequisite ATM visit is astonishing. Come on, Paseo, bite the bullet, face a nominal credit card charge and make obtaining your delicious sandwiches a little easier for the customer. Its a win-win situation.

2. To combat the usual lines and slow service, we've adopted the strategy of calling in our orders ahead of time. Many times, I've called and been put on infinite hold (10+ minutes). Other times, they ignore their phone completely and don't answer it!

3. No sign out front: come on, the place is a gold mine, invest $100 on a sign.

4. They just SHRUNK THE SANDWICHES! That's right, at least of September 29, 2007, the sandwiches are now about 66% their normal size and the bread has been changed. Not cool guys!

5. Every evening, its inevitable that they run out of bread and reach for the sarcastic sign that declares "No More Sandwiches! Yes Really, NO MORE SANDWICHES!" After about a thousand days in a row of running out of bread, you'd think they could improve their inventory planning.

I want to throw a pie in the owner's face. The place is almost communist -- but then again, its Cuban.

I un-knowingly drove past it on my way home from work and every day I smelled this succulent spicy aroma and I could not for the life of me, figure out where it was coming from. I finally gave in and stopped to ask around at various nearby businesses who pointed me towards a non-descript little white shack. How could this place be a good eatery I thought as there was not even a sign out front. I went inside and asked one of the regular customers what the best thing to order was. He suggested the Midnight Cuban Sandwich...oh baby is that a good choice! The bread alone is the best I have ever tasted. I am not usually a fan of onions or even of pork in general, but let's just say I am now! The key is unique blend of herbs and spices they use.
I have been eating there regularly ever since for the last 3.5 years. You don't go there for the ambiance, you go for the over the top delicious food! I have had just about everything on the menu and it is all good. The Prawn sandwich is great although very garlicy. The chicken is a good alternative to the pork with similar flavoring. The fish is sandwich sooo tender!
I have some minor complaints. The first is that they no longer make the rice pudding. I loved that stuff as it was a rich custard with a crem-brulet consistency that had raisins and rice in it. They stopped cooking it because they said it was too much work to make it?whatever. Oh ya and bring cash as they do not accept checks or credit cards. Parking is limited to the street which in Fremont meant that you better plan on parking in the nearby neighborhood and hoofin? it. Seating is limited and the lines are almost always long as they make every order fresh and there are often many folks waiting for this delectable food. In spite of all this it is well worth the wait although the smell of the food wafting out form the back kitchen will likely cause your stomach to growl while you wait.

. .with its crusty french bread, slathered with mayo and oozing out the sides with that divine thick cut, carmelized onions. YUM! I couldn't move away from Seattle for fear of what the withdrawals from Paseo's sandwiches and Ezell's chicken would do to me!!

LUCKY! I am so glad i found that place because the midnight cuban is insanely good. I dont even like pork usually!!! and the beans... theyre the best beans ever. sounds wierd but i swear! they are so so flavorful! anyway i moved back to la, and im not kidding. i miss this place more than any other restaurant. i will randomly crave it. so so so so SO worth whatever you have to do to get over there!! you need to go try this place. i wish i could go right now

This is THE BEST hidden Seattle treasure you could find. Every single dish on the menu is delicious, and they recently added new items ~hurray~! My personal favorite is the prawn sandwich. The prawns are perfectly juicy, flavorful and garlicky (the corn too). The menu says you can choose from 1-5 stars but apparently they've done up to 100 stars for spice freaks like me. I made a mistake last week and ordered 20 stars, and I thought I was going to die. It was soooo spicy. Yet, I still could not stop eating it! It was simply too good. My dream would be to move into the condos that are being built adjacent to Paseo and wash their dishes in exchange for a little taste of heaven.

Pros: The BEST sandwiches you will ever taste!

Cons: The understandably long lines during "rush" hours.

I love Paseo. Their "medianoche" is the best pork sandwich I have ever had. It has ruined any chance I have at enjoying a pork sandwich anywhere else, whether it be at another Cuban restaurant, a bbq joint, or a Vietnamese restaurant (and I love banh mis). The funny thing is, I didn't even realize that the sandwich made at Paseo was completely nontraditional until I moved to NY and went to every Cuban restaurant I could find, trying to get my fix. At first I thought the other restaurants just made bad medianoches. And then it became clear that it was Paseo that was making the "bad" medianoche...and that I will never find another one like it. I have been coming here for years and unfortunately have never tried anything else. I just love their medianoche too much to do that to myself.

Pros: The best sandwich ever, free corn on the cob, cheap

Cons: Busy and hard to get a table, closed for a month in winter

Wow, never had such a tasty, tasty meal before I went to Paseos! My friend took me there because she said that I HAD to try their shrimp sandwich and I am so, so happy she took me! Wow, I couldn't even fathom a shrimp sandwich but all of those flavors just blew me away. I think everyone needs to try it because it will be an experience for sure. It is a small restaurant but I like it like that. It tastes like home-cooked food and their corn was yuuummy! If you love flavors, entice your taste buds here, they'll thank you! :D

grab one of their sandwiches to go and sit down by the bridge or greenlake and the aroma alone will make everyone around you jealous. (but know that if you get it to go, you won't get corn on the cob which you do get if you eat it there)

try the fresh fish of the day... i once was lucky enough to go on a halibut day!! trust that these guys know how to make a sandwich.... they may not follow all the traditional cuban rules, but they have found a sweet spot they should stick with.

things to know before you go:: crappy parking, cash only, and either bring lots of napkins or don't wear your best clothes... they're juicy and messy :)

This was a great sandwich. I'd get one again. But after living 12 years in Miami, I can promise you that nobody who knows Cuban food would call this a "medianoche" (midnight). I'm puzzled why Paseo named it that, because the only similarity is pork. Paseo uses french bread, a mayo spread, cilantro, grilled onions, and pulled pork. Every medianoche I've ever had was cuban-style egg bread, sliced pork, serrano ham, swiss cheese, and a few sliced pickles. No grilled onions, and definitely no cilantro. And a medianoche is grilled on a sandwich press--essentially a Cuban panini. All that notwithstanding, even though this isn't an "authentic" cuban midnight sandwich, it was really, really good.

I have to say that I was almost offended by Lola's review of Paseo. It sounds almost crazy that so many people highly recommended this wonderful place and Lola had nothing to say other than the food is horrible. Paseo is the best Sandwich place in Seattle!! I love that tasty, messy pork sandwish. They are always full of delicious goodies and the meat portion is more than generous. Listen to the majority of reviewers Paseo is worth the wait, the mess and the small venue.

For the sandwiches they must use something like a 1 week old over-baked baguette sliced in half lengthwise, toasted, soaked in vegetable oil and toasted again so that no human teeth could possibly bite into it. It's impossible to eat. The spices are ok, but so is the jamaican jerk spice blend I bought at the supermarket. And the flavor is just not worth ripping your teeth out trying to take a bite out of stale bread that holds nothing between it but grease. Don't get me wrong, I like greasy food. This place has potential. But If you're thinking about going here to spend three times as much as you should on a sandwich you won't be able to eat, I suggest you'd be better off chugging a bottle of vegetable oil spiked with jalapenos.

The difference between a good sandwich and an extraordinary one is best left to the individual eater, but Paseo clearly falls in the extraordinary category for me. These are simple creations that don't overwhelm you with quantity of ingredients, but focus on getting the key elements exactly right. The pulled pork is out of this world. The hard rolls are perfect. Addictive taste. Worth the wait at lunchtime, but be sure you have a lot of napkins and some time to eat.

PROS:
CONS: Small seating area

Paseos offers three incredible vegan & vegetarian options, including an amazing tofu sandwich 1-5 star, the Tofu con Gusto dinner that includes a delicious salad, rice & beans & corn (an excellent value), and their famed rice & beans that I eat in obscene quantities. Highly recommended! ORDER AHEAD & TAKE YOUR FOOD TO GO!

This small shop, on the Freemont hill, has great sandwiches and good Caribbean style food. The quality has stood out in freshness and grilled perfection. The BBQ chicken and pork sandwiches are extremely delicious. They are on a different level from BBQ house sandwiches or deli store sandwiches. The half chicken dinner (with rice, black beans, and delicious corn) is also popular. Unfortunately the restaurant seating is horribly cramped. This place has the smallest dining area I have ever seen. Only about 12 people can be seated on cramped plastic seats next to cramped plastic tables. During warm summer days a couple of tables are placed outside which offer a bit more comfort. There are no waitresses so you are expected to clean your own mess. The sandwiches here are better than Vietnamese sandwiches, traditional smoked BBQ sandwiches (drowning in BBQ sauce), and boring deli sandwiches (both Quiznos and Subway). Finding parking is horrible. The seating is horrible. The food is very tasty and definitely worth trying.

uh-huh. we'll take it slow. and let it flow. that's where we want to eat some car-ib-bean...oh-wow-wow. i must say that this little restaurant has the best caribbean food that i have ever tasted. even from the simple beans and basmati rice, yum-yum. the seasonings in this simple dish makes me think of the wonderful sunsets of the caribbean. and even for those of you that are vegetarian, this restaurant has the tofu con gusto (i think that was the dish name), and it is absolutely delicious. there are mainly lots of extremely tasteful sandwiches that just absorb from your lips to your teeth to your tongue.

This place is incredible, but I never would've found it on my own. They serve delicious sandwiches at lunch that simply must be tasted to be believed. I was also a fun of the rice which had so many flavors and a rich aroma. This place can be hard to find because there isn't a sign, but I would just look for a line. I had to wait about 25 minutes for my recent weekday lunch trip, and there's not much in the way of seating so I had to place a takeout order.

If you come to Seattle, do yourself a favor by making a sidetrip to Fremont (beautiful in itself) for lunch or dinner at Paseo. The phrase "never judge a book by its cover" has never been more true with this place, the facade is something to be desired, but your mouth will never be happier.

This oasis of deliciousness is dangerously close to my house! The cuban pork sandwich is a new level. Unfortunately, they refuse to serve sandwiches at dinnertime. There is no way a restaurant would consistently "run out" of bread (as reported by the staff) for months on end. While their dinners are good, the sandwich is the clear winner. Don't get me wrong, I'll still make just a dinner of their black beans, but I wish I could order a sandwich after 3pm.

Listen Folks,
after hearing all you rave about Paseo, I have to add my 2 cents. This is what you do:
1) you call your order in for 2 pork sandwiches and a side of rice and beans
2) you wait, living on a prayer
3) woah. you're halfway there
4) take the sandwich home and proceed to consume (with at least 4 napkins in close proximity for unfortunate sacrifices to the ground), peeling away the wrapper as you eat it.
5) don't forget to almost eat the paper.
6) and wait until it is humanly allowed to have Paseo again (it has been 2X a day sometimes for me).
buon gusto!

Everything at Paseo is delicious. The Midnight Cuban sandwich is so good, I dream about it. How can something so tasty only cost $6.50? Best deal in town! Call ahead, and order to go - sometimes they're really busy and there's nowhere to sit. You have to try this place - you won't be sorry.

Well the cat has long been out of the bag on this place. Paseo is nothing short of finger lickin' good. The sandwiches take a few minutes to build (and some may require a city permit they're packed so high with goodies) but it's worth the wait. The pork, prawns, chicken and occassional steak is all mouth watering. I've never been disappointed. Great food, neat people. Enjoy mon!

Take out, dine in- Paseo's is excellent. I always get the Pork Dinner- my wife likes the Roast Pork. The sandwiches are great, but so large and hard to eat, why not get the dinner plate? Whenever we don't want to cook, but want something that feels homecooked, we call Paseo's. If you are looking for a nice sit down dinner... keep looking. Paseo's is more of a lunch counter than a restaurant.

The best sandwich ever created can be found here - The Caribbean Jerk chicken sandwich. The beans are also quite yummy and they have a tofu dish that is very flavorful. The place is easy to miss as there is no sign out front but the auromatic carribean spices fill the air so follow your nose to the little white shack.
