I took my elderly Golden Retriever to Dr Burton for about 1 year. Great bedside manner, kind staff. We had spoken each time that she was getting older, she had many problems with her legs and at some point that they would be giving out and it would be "time". The time came in June when her back leg gave out. She could not get up or support her own weight. That was on Monday night. I called first thing Tuesday morning and was told they were busy, but to drop her off and they would call me as soon as they could look at her. I called at least 3 times that day....nothing. Finally, I got a call at about 4:30, the Dr would like her to stay overnight and do some more tests in the morning. What? I asked several questions and said the plan was to put her out of pain. She was an elderly dog and had already been through a lot. She said she understood and said she would call me back. Nothing. I called first thing Wednesday morning, told them what was going on that I wanted to speak with the Doctor right away. I did not want to pay for the overnight visit. Dr. Burton called me at 11:30, yes, it was the most humane thing to put her down. I said that I had a hard time with the thought that my beloved dog had spent the last night of her life at the vet without her family...nothing. I said that I would be there at 2:30 so we could be there with her and say goodbye. I arrived at 2:30 to no doctor and a confused staff...they thought he was putting her down on Thursday. He did not tell them anything, they were very embarrassed and kept apologizing. They indicated that this was not the first time this had happened. I told them to give me my dog and both of my dogs charts and to tell the doctor he wouldn't be seeing us again. We quickly found another veterinary practice that made our last experienced with our wonderful, beloved dog a dignified and loving experience. I will never recommend Dr Burton to anyone. I have never written a bad review on anyone before, but this behavior was excusable.

I have been a long time client of Dr Burton's but am extremely disappointed with his staff.
We had an injured feral cat show up on our door step. We were able to catch him in a live trap and called Dr Burton to make an appointment. His staff declined us because the cat was not legally ours. I told them that I would sign paperwork claiming financial responsiblity and was still quickly declined. This cat was in awful shape and needed immediate help. I called and asked to speak to Dr Burton but was declined again. The desk gal was extremely rude, put me on hold, when she came back she told me she would call me back. She did not call back.
We took the cat to another vet that helped us without question.
The help at Evergreen Animal Hospital is totally rude. Dr Burton will continue to lose loyal customers until he hires better help.

I found a cat hanging by a back leg between two boards on a fence (it was an accident not cruelty). I got her down and rushed her to Evergreen at 8:15 AM. I was told the vet would be in at 9 and would look at the cat. I informed them I would take financial responsibility for the cat, though she wasn't mine.

By 1 pm, I still hadn't heard from them so I called and was told they hadn't looked at her yet, they had healthy puppies that had shot appointments first. WHAT????? Over 4 hours!!!

At 1:30 pm, I called back and said my mom would pick her up and take her to another vet that would take care of an injured animal first.

At 1:32 pm, then called me and said the vet finally looked at her and that I could come get her but they wanted to charge me for the time she was there and I had to take her somewhere else because they don't have any way of taking x-rays or anything else. So, what did they look at?? I was extremely upset that the cat had been there for 5 hours, no pain medicine, no IV for fluids, a dislocated leg. She was in pain!

2:00 pm, they finally looked at her again and came to the conclusion that the leg wasn't broken, they gave her some pain meds and prescription for the open sores on her leg, charged us $150 and released her to my mom.

After talking with them again, I learned a few things:
* they didn't want to treat the cat since she wasn't mine and they assumed I didn't want to spend much money (I told them I would spend what was reasonable and necessary
* well pets are more important then an injured and howling cat in a box
* the front desk staff lies about what is happening with your injured animal
* the vet wouldn't talk with me on the phone, I had to be there in person and I worked almost an hour away and couldn't leave
* they don't have the necessary equipment to treat an animal that is hurt and they will charge you to tell you that.

I have to agree with many others. If this were only based on Dr. Burton it would be five stars. Dr. Burton's skills are above and beyond other vets I've had treating my animals over the last 20 years. He is very knowledgeable, and he has used that to save my "special needs" dog many times over. He is straight forward about diagnosis and prognosis (we've had two cats with terminal illnesses and he has been extremely supportive, but also realistic about the outcome). The vet techs are nearly universally wonderful. Only one strikes me as not being very compassionate with animals.

Like others, though, I have had nearly 100% bad experiences with the front desk staff. Rude, impatient, and they act like I'm insulting them by asking them to do their job. I ignore them, and push to get what I need because Dr. Burton's skills are unmatched. But, I can say that in any other situation I would never put up with the rudeness from the front desk.

I found Dr. Burton when I had a cat who had seizures and he worked for another vet's office. We have used Dr. Burton's services for 3 cats and one dog since that time. He is very patient, knowledgeable, professional and personal. He has always given us and our pets the utmost attention. That is why I have been more loyal to him than even my own physicians. In fact, I joke that I named my now 23 year old son Mark in his honor! My pets have all had healthy long lives and I attribute that to his guidance and care.

We have been taking our family pets to Doctor Burton for over 20 years. Recently, our "pug" puppy became ill and it was determined he had a intestional blockage. He performed the emergency surgery and saved my puppy who means the world to me. His friendly staff kept me up to date on the dogs status as he was kept days after the initial surgery. I highly recommend Doctor Burton, and his knowledgable staff. Also, I find the fees for services are very reasonable.

My two beagles came from a breeder who was once reputable, and the most amazing dog I ever had came from her. My two current lovies, however, are inbred. They deal with all kinds of issues, from minor ailments like itchy skin to serious conditions like grand mal epileptic seizures and apparently a compromised lymphatic system. I didn't expect Sam to live after he had been seizing for over 24 hours, and it took Mark almost 4 days to bring him back from the brink. Molly picked up Rickettsia, a terrible parasite. After months of it recurring, Mark finally removed the lymph glands in her next, and she was finally free. Next, she had a tumor on her spleen, and in a very delicate surgery, both were successfully removed. Her latest problem was cat food and candy. She was getting into it, and I didn't know until she didn't eat. Good Lord, she is a beagle, and has NEVER turned down food. She had pancreatitis and secondarily that impacted the function of her liver. She became jaundiced, throwing up, not eating. She is recovering. Each of these conditions is life threatening, and Mark is marvelous. Now his staff. They are hard working, intelligent, professional, friendly, and polite. They are not fast, because the deal with each of us, one at a time. It is completely personalized service when it is my turn, just like when Mark is examining my dogs, it seems like I am the only person and my dogs are the only patients he has. I don't mind waiting when it is your turn, because you deserve the same attention that I get when it is my turn. Kudos to all of you, especially Sarah, Donna, Kate, and Hooray Kelly is coming back! Ignore those evil reviews. They just don't understand or are impatient. I love you all!

Pros: Dr. Burton and Staff

Cons: none

This would be a 5 star rating if I considered only the "professional" services, however that is not ones total experience when dealing with a veterinary clinic
Over the past 8 years I have had my pets into this hospital on multiple occasions and for multiple treatments, procedures and services. I can not express enough praise for Dr. Burton's skills and expertise and equally I can not express many pleasant encounters with his staff. They appear rude, uncaring, untrained and totally incapable of doing much more than making appointments and taking money. They can never answer even the most basic questions. Point in question...I recently left my dog for a dental...I asked what they had done...she didn't know. She had to go ask "the doctor", but then return with only half an answer.
Then I asked the result of 2 other things I'd had questions about. Again she didn't know, had to go ask the doctor...came back to say there wasn't a problem, everything was "perfect", but the vet tech ]?] that saw the video said there was definitely a problem...cheese!!!!

Cons: Dealing with staff

We recently nearly lost our dog to a rare disease. We found out many dogs with this illness die as a result of not getting diagnosed properly or in time. Fortunately Dr. Burton recognized the disease our dog had and treated him immediately and saved his life. We are so grateful to have Dr. Burton as our Vet. He is kind, returns your phone calls, great office staff and reasonable prices.

Here is what people need to realize...

IF Dr. Burton was to carry a cell phone, he would be getting calls 24/7 from people who "need" a service right away. There is a reason for emergency animal hospitals... if all vets could be reached all the time, why would there be emergency hospitals???

Also, the staff at Evergreen is fantastic. It's not like they are proffesionally trained!!! You need to realize that they technically can't do anything without okay-ing it with the Doctor. So don't complain about the staff not answering you're questions... I'm sorry none of them went to vet school! They are normal people like you!

For those of you who are complaining about Evergreen, try going somewhere else. See that they dont know you by name, you're just another check rollin' in. But at Evergreen, they genuinly care how you and you're pet are doing.

I've taken my pets other places, and have experienced this. When my friend told me to try out Evergreen, I was blown away. The prices, staff, Doctor, and facilities are hard to beat. I obviously HIGHLY recomend Evergreen.

Dr. Burton is very knowledgeable and has a wonderful bedside manner! I breed English and French Bulldogs and I would not take them anywhere else!! I have had some awful experiences with other veterinarians but Dr. Burton and his staff have always treated me with respect, answered all of my questions in great detail in terms I can understand. He also does not make me spend wasted money on on procedures or test not necessary as other clinics have taken advantage of doing to me. I recommend Dr. Burton to everyone I meet!!

Dr. Burton is a likable guy and a knowledgeable vet. However, he is just too busy to give quality care. He needs to slow down a bit. In addition, our dog had surgery and ended up having some complications, (not caused by the vet). We are new in town and didn't know where to take her over the weekend and the vet didn't even have an emergency hospital referenced on his answering machine. He does not carry a cell phone and his staff can not contact him when he is out of the office. When we went to pick up our dog one afternoon, the vet had left without giving her a pain shot and without leaving 2 necessary prescriptions. We had to leave her there because she was in too much pain to be moved and had already been in emergency twice that week...and they don't staff the facility at night. We were told the vet would be back that evening, but we didn't know when, what he was going to do or anything. No one seemed concerned about the suffering of our dog. We finally just went down and waited in the parking lot and he showed up about 8:30 that night. Although he gave her a pain shot, he didn't fill her prescriptions...a sedative and a pain reliever. He said to bring her in the next morning for a pain shot and when we got there at 8, we were told he wouldn't be in until 1:30. So once again she had to go without any pain medication for almost 5 hours until he got there. She is a little 20 lb. Westie and she had a 12" incision along her underside. She was extremely uncomfortable and they just didn't seem to think it was a big deal. It was a big deal to us, as we watched he suffering and whimpering with pain. We've decided not to utilize his services any longer. He is just too busy and inaccessible and insensitive to needs of his patients.

The staff was very uncooperative. Just short of rude. We had called several times prior to coming in for the procedure. The price changed each time we called. We made an appointment and guess what the price went up again when we got there. After we started asking questions they then refused to even do the procedure. I?m glad we chose to go some where else. This vet came with high recommendations but failed miserably in this case

I've had pets all my life (over 50 years) and I've been to lots of vets. I've only recently found Evergreen Animal Hospital and I can tell you that Dr. Burton tops my list of compassionate, knowledgeable, caring doctors that have treated my animals over the years. He's down-to-earth and interested in the animal's welfare. His staff members are well-informed, cheerful, efficient, and friendly. The facility is clean and bright.

I had to have one of my dogs put to sleep today - I could not have asked for a more empathetic and kind "good-bye" for my little guy. If you want to know exactly what kind of vet you have, this type of visit will bring out either the best or the worst and in my opinion, Dr. Burton is the best. My little dog was treated with the utmost respect and kindness possible.

I highly recommend Evergreen Animal Hospital to anyone who has a pet that needs a doctor.

Pros: Knowledge, cleanliness, thoroughness, availability

Cons: None that I can think of

When we took the dog in here, they ran a bunch of tests, they have seen him before and he was already taking some medicines for certain problems...he is an old dog, and things are starting to go, but we want them to go in the least painful way and we also would love to keep him around as long as he is healthy. Anyway one of the staff members carried him and then dropped him on the ground - not from a long distance, but he is an old dog, he lost his footing and fell. Second, he was in for an appointment about lunch time, and was picked up after work and there was a charge for the time he was in the office, and yet they said he needed to be dropped off, and picked up. Also the vet was impossible to talk to after to explain his condition or to answer questions. The staff didn't know the answers and said they would ask him and get back to us, they never called back w/ the test results and then when we called to see if he needed to come in again they said yes, but they said he had what had been diagnosed already by that same clinic only 3 months earlier - a disease that won't go away. So I am not sure what they checked for, and the vet was booked all day and didn't have the time to call us and answer our questions. I feel like it is totally hopeless going here. The staff is uncaring and downright mean, you wouldn't think they would choose the career of working w/ animals and I certainly won't trust them again.

I really like Dr. Burton. I've been taking my dogs to him for almost 15 years and have never had a problem. He is very friendly and knowledgeable. You can tell he really loves animals. I wouldn't take my pets to anyone else.

We have been going to Dr. Burton for 9 years and, besides his enthusiasm and big heart, he is cheaper than area vets. It is easy to get an appointment. Two of my neighbors have switched vets to be with him and are more than pleased! We had cancer issues with one of our pets and he made personal phone calls to us explaining diagnosis and options and was heartfelt and torn-up as much as we were ... he gave good advice and was a true supporter and caregiver. I highly recommend that you change vets now ~ you will be happily surprised by his knowledge, prices and great personality/heart with you and your pets!

Dr. Mark Burton's enthusiasm and affection for his patients are very clear.

One of my dogs is usually shy and fearful around strangers, so I feel nervous taking her anywhere. But Dr. Burton calms her right down and is very patient with her. My dogs and I enjoy seeing him and his staff, all of whom are helpful and good at giving detailed explanations if you have questions.

Dr. Burton and his staff are friendly, knowledgeable, caring and competent! We have been taking our two dogs there for the last 9 years and they have never let us down. One of our dogs got cancer last Spring and he was very caring when he let us know and was very down to earth about the options we had. We took Dr. Burton's advice on treatment and that dog has been great ever since! He is funny, welcoming and our dogs do not get scared going there! I highly recommend Dr. Burton and the Evergreen Animal Clinic!

When I was a kid we took our Mini Schnaz to Evergreen and he recieved his shots there, was neutered there and Dr. Burton was wonderful. Recently my two female dogs to him to get their spay and shots, he is wonderful and they love the vet. His receptionists are very personable and even have little kitty and doggie treats for your pets!! His spay/neuters are the best I've seen in the SW Washington/PDX area (we got our cat fixed at a clinic in PDX, it was HORRIBLE, I wish I would have taken the cat to Dr Burton as well). All of the animals we've ever seen come and go from Evergreen have been happy and well cared for. His prices for the services are reasonable, esp. when you consider he takes a great deal of care with the animals. I highly recommend him to anyone, heck I drive all the way from Milwaukie because I just don't trust anyone else!! I've been to MANY dog and cat hospitals, Evergreen is hands down the BEST -- and if you don't believe me try it for yourself, you'll think the same thing :)

Pros: Friendly EVERYONE, treats animals like family, more sanitary than human hospitals

Cons: A little pricey

I have been going to Dr. Burton for almost 14 years now. He is by far the best vet in town. His staff is always very warm and welcoming. The Clinic is always very clean. Th eonly problem I have is that sometimes it is hard to get in right away for an appointment. He is always so busy. But most of the time he will give me the option to wait to be fit in. I highly reccomend this Vet.

Took my dog for their Senior Check-up. After two days in a cage, they clipped her toenails. Her dementia, runny eye, and cyst werent examined as requested. Never saw the vet and he never returned calls.
