Roots is not as far as one might think and well worth the drive. It is probably about 5-10 minutes past the PDX airport taking the I-205 bridge. Exit onto I-14 heading east, and about two exits later get off at 192nd, go north about 3

In our world of chain restaurants Roots is the BEST thing to happen in the Vancouver/Camas area. My friends and I have been several times and have never been disappointed. Lunch is fantastic, you must try the burger it is incredible.

Just ate at Roots--loved it! It's one of my favorite places because I'm never disappointed either by the food or the service. It's always good. There were a couple of new items on the menu this time that were really yummy: the potted white

Roots is one of my favorite spots to stop in and enjoy a drink and a dessert. The staff is very nice and the ever changing menu keeps me trying something new every time I come in.

We had dinner at Roots last night and we were very happy with the food and service. The chantrelles were quite a treat and the mushroom lasagna was so tasty and rich. The waitress's recommended wine paring with the lasagna was also spot on

My boyfriend and I went to roots for dinner one Saturday evening, we called ahead and when we arived we were seated right away no waiting (it was not very busy) we sat in the bar area of the resturant. We were not to impressed with the dinner and app menu because there was not alot to choose from. We ordered the fish and chips. Our order was delivered, not by our waiter but by the bus boy, nobody ever returned to ask if our food was ok or if we needed anything. Never received ice water, salt or pepper and the fish tasted like it was cooked in really, really old burnt oil and the fries were rubbery. Not very impreseed with the fish and chips that cost 15 dollars. Burgerville has better fish and chips than this resturant. The resturant was very cute and clean but the food and service did not meet the standards and unfortunately we will not return and I will inform my friends on my experience.

The two previous reviewers must be local competitor restaurant owner's or soon to be former restaurant owners, because they are "so far out of the norm" and "out of touch" with their reviews. The bar is awesome as well as the food and the experienced, well trained staff is top notch. Happy hour (new menu) is great and it's worth the drive to dine here. It's a little loud in the dining area but that's because of how crowded it can be and also with high ceilings and concrete floors. Their private dining room is very nice for smaller parties up to 30. This is a very nice place, and I suggest you give it a try and forgive the two previous jealous reviewers.

Way over priced. Menu is for those with a fancy taste preference only. Wait staff is seldom seen one you are seated and your order is taken.

If a place is full I can deal with sub-par service. But when we were one of four tables and we get to see our waitress three times its bad. Take order, give food, and drop off check.

Normally when you order a blue cheese burger you can taste everything. In this case it was a very strong blue cheese and bread taste. If only one the food or service was bad I would try again but both being bad its a no go for round two.

Why two stars? The mussels were pretty good but not enough for a 2nd trip.

I took a colleague here for a business lunch on the recommendation of a friend. I'd heard good things about Roots but had never been.

I had a HUGE portion of poached salmon over a fennel and apple slaw. The salmon was literally the best I've ever had, hands down. I don't know what they did to make it so good but I could hardly keep from making little nummy noises the whole time I was eating it. The slaw was extremely good too - crisp, fresh, with a viniagrette that also had fresh herbs.

My colleague had fish and chips and she also mentioned that hers was wonderful. Our server, I think her name was Kristin or Christine, was very attentive and friendly - it just made for a great lunch experience.

6 of us had brunch at Roots. 3 of us ordered the homemade corned beef hash with grain mustard. All of us got stringed beef over come cubed/chopped potatoes. No mustard, no evidence of corned beef. The beef was not fresh. Not appetizing looking.

My husband and I went there a week ago for dinner - we'd never been but had heard friends rave about Roots. I loved the ambiance - classy but comfortable but the food was really the star of the show!

I started off with a pineapple cilantro margarita - it was spicy and delicious, well-balanced, a really well-made drink. My husband and I shared the crab and avocado appetizer with vermouth viniagrette - when it arrived we were both surprised at how many huge fresh chunks of crab there were. It was delicious and after we took a bite we both looked at the menu again because we couldn't believe it was only $11. It doesn't happen often, but I just love getting really fantastic food for a great price - it makes me happy. :)

Our server was very helpful and attentive as well - she knew her wine, offered me samples and helped me pick out a glass that went with my short ribs, which I had next.
They were served with some delicious greens, root vegetables and pickled horseradish - the ribs were
meltingly tender with the perfect amount of fat mouthfeel without it feeling fatty at all. Plus, once again the portion was huge - I had a full dinner plus a big lunch out of the leftovers. The amount of value you get for the price at Roots really amazed me.

Especially since our meal had that 'certain something' ...you know how you can tell when the chef really cares about their creations? It's hard to put your finger on but you know it when you taste it. Roots has got it. Thanks for a wonderful evening - we will definitely be back.

Pros: well-crafted, well thought out cuisine

.

This place is awesome. Roots and 360 are sister restaurants. Roots has excellent happy hour. I have been to lunch and dinner and Roots and always had good experience b/c of very tasty food. The service on the other hand is RUDE. The wait staff is very rude, slow and obnoxious. If they get some people who are friendly on the wait staff, they will have a good turn around.

Roots has an upscale and chic decor and you would imagine yourself in the heart of downtown Portland. The wait staff is professional, informed, and can advise on the rich and varied Northwest menu as well as a fine selection of wines. I would recommend this restaurant highly for a special occasion.

I have eaten at Roots about a dozen times since it opened. It is without a doublt some of the best food that I have eaten, and definitely my favorite restaurant in SW Washington.

Every time my In-Laws come to visit they insist on going to Roots, and they are world travelers who frequent all the best restaurants.

The food is expensive but worth the price. For bargain shoppers I recommend their happy hours where you can get their world-class food at very reasonable prices. Their drinks are also excellent.

I went to Roots last night for happy hour and was suprised to see a beautiful new bar. It is much larger with very comfortable leather chairs. The portions were quite large for happy hour and the food was great. The bartender was nice and extremly noligable about the food. I really have enjoyed every experience I have had at Roots and would strongly recommend it to any one who is a lover of food that doesn't come a can!

I've been 3 or 4 times within the space of a year and a half. I figure they're new, they'll get things sorted out. Evidently not. Went today for lunch, and in the midst of the meal was overcome with the thought "Why does anyone come here?" The service was bad, the food was slow, no free refills on drinks other than water, miniscule portions, and above average prices. I was discussing the place with another diner, and we were in agreement that the fish & chips were crappy, and to be avoided.

So, in short, there is really NO reason to go to this place!

Having lived in San Francisco and the Chicago area for many years, I was disappointed in the restaurant scene in Vancouver when transferred here. I was so thrilled to discover Roots--a terrific atmosphere (be prepared for a bit of noise, however), beautifully-prepared food, great wine selection, and fantastic service (our server managed to be very attentive while avoiding mid-bite conversation). Don't let the location scare you away--you'll be transported once inside--and parking is a breeze.

Ordered my favorite dish at Roots last night, their short ribs and was served a bowl of pasta topped with some stringy flavorless meat (I will take their word for it that it was short ribs but it could just as well been stew meat) in a very bland watery sauce. Apparantly they changed the dish about a month ago and to the waitresses credit she offered to bring a different dish but I elected to give it try (won't do that again). My wife's Chicken was excellent as was the Potato Soup so all was not lost. Why they would make such drastic changes to one of their signature dishes doesn't make sense. The restaurant review highights the Short Ribs and talks about the meat served in a Port sauce and falling of the bone, well there ain't no bone and there ain't no port sauce. It's hard to recommend a restaurant when you don't know if what you recommend and what they serve next time are even remotely similar. Maybe their expansion is distracted them but someone clearly had a Brain Freeze

My wife and I learned about the Roots from Portland Monthly Magazine. As a regular customer at Higgins, we were interested in how ?Higgins? foods transformed in to a new generation of restaurant. The first impression when you are trying to find a restaurant is not so impressive especially you see ?UPS Store? and other suburban shops sharing same parking lots. However, as you step into the restaurant, you will be surprised by a nicely decorated interior and friendly waiters. If you are regular to Higgins, you will quickly notice that waiter?s dress code, dishes, and menu are very similar to Higgins. I ordered steam mussels, salad with anchovies ($1 extra), and duck. My wife ordered a salada and a salmon dish. We asked both dishes to be cooked as rare as possible. We both agreed that mussels were very good but Higgins version has much more depth and complexity of flavor. Salmon was cooked according to our request (rare) and it was well balanced with potato side dish. Comparing to Higgins version, we still found that Higgins still scored higher. The duck is Higgins?s signature dish and we weren?t expecting Roots to come close to Higgins standard, however, to our surprise, we found that Root?s duck dish to be par with Higgins version. We didn?t find salad any special. In conclusion, we highly recommend ?duck? at Roots. Since my wife and I prefer downtown living, we prefer Higgins but if you live near Roots or want to avoid downtown, Pearl district, or East side of Portland (e.g., Le Pigeon, Genoa, etc.), the Roots Restaurant and Bar is an excellent alternative.

Well we enjoy Roots and they have times of greatness and other times they fall flat. Actually each time I try to order a steak here it comes out bad. So - go for the standbys.... great salads (especially the spinach) and the pork is good, excellent happy hour - but do NOT order a steak. The special was filet mignon and I decided to try it against my previous flat iron debacle of the past. I usually order medium but specified I want it pink just not oozing blo*d and she recommended going medium well since they tend to cook on the rare side. Well, it came out and there was not a trace of pink anywhere. Well, it took awhile to get the meal and since we had kids with us - I just picked off their plate and nibbled on the steak. Well, the bill came and my "special of the day" steak was $37!! I figured it would be $25 and was okay with overdone as the rest of the meal was good - but $37!! I really should of made the chef stretch himself and cook it appropriately.

Good desserts - the creme brulee is creamy, decadent and ample, chocolate mousse cake is rich and oh so filling!

***FYI - the nixed the kids menus

My wife and I have been to this gem on numerous occasions, Lunch, Dinner, Brunch, it doesn't matter, everytime we go, the food and the service have been great. On a recent visit, our waiter guided us through the evening as if he was actually enjoying himself, go figure..... some servers actually enjoy what they do.
We started the evening with a couple of interesting cocktails off the list of many. I must say my wifes Vanilla Margarita was quite tasty. Our first course was a Dungeness Crab and Avocado appetizer that is perfect with its drizzle of Vermouth Vinaigrette and Radish. We skipped the salads and went straight to the entrees.
my wife enjoyed a fresh Halibut dish, and I Had a Ribeye Steak that was the best I have had in quite some time. The Steak is not on the menu, but they do offer at least one steak option nightly.
try to save room for dessert, as they are delicious. My wife and I shared a goat cheese cheesecake with apricots, and loved it. i'll admit, I was a little scared by the goat cheese, but it was VERY subtle. The wine list is large with a heavy dose of some great Northwest wines, with a few Californias thrown in for those that have not discovered Washington wines yet. GO TRY IT, YOU'LL LOVE IT.

After hearing many rave reviews about this place, my husband and I decided to give it a try. We started in the bar, the bartender was top notch and very friendly as well. For dinner my husband had the steak, which was cooked to perfection and I had the Pork Chop which I will definately go back for. To top it all off, I had what was perhaps the best Creme Brulee that I have ever had. This place has it all, friendly, good looking staff, nice atmosphere and amazing food. It's nice to know that Vancouver/Camas is finally home to a great restaurant. I heard that the owner also owns the Pizzeria across the parking lot, that's next on our list.

Cons: Loud, but it was very very busy

Our server quickly sized us up when we did not order high dollar bottles of wine and we barely saw him. He was arrogant and pretentious. The food was fantastic, reasonably priced and good portions. I ended up taking home part of my dinner so that I could enjoy a fabulous desert. The place is a bit noisy and the chairs are butt numbing, but it was a romantic spot for an anniversary dinner. I would go again and just ask specifically for one of the women servers, they both seemed great!

We moved up from the Bay Area earlier this year, and this has become "our place" The servers are very friendly. The food is amazing - fresh local flare with a bit of southern touches. The corn beef and has for Sunday brunch is amazing! We did a mixology class there recently with 6 friends... Dave the bartender and the Chef were great! We learned how to make 6 or 7 drinks and the check paired apps with each one. You can never go wrong with any special they have. Our favorite app that are main stays on the list is the olives and goat cheese and the almonds. If you ask Dave the bartenter will make you one of his new creations ... that will sure to be a treat!

2 Candles - Have eaten here lunch, dinner and during happy hour. We even had Thanksgiving dinner ther this past year. Always have exceptional service and never been disappointed with the food. The opportunity to sit at the bar overlooking the kitchen area (as an avid "home chef" ) it is pleasure to watch the professionals work - no "Hell's Kitchen" here. Will always go back and treat our out of town guests.

Pros: Great food, service and cocktails

Cons: Sunsets - directly into the restaurant can be a little blinding

The host was very friendly, the service was great and the food was outstanding. In addition I must say that who I believe is the owner and chef caught up with us on our way to the car and pointed out that we had left a one hundred dollar bill mixed in with the twenties to pay our tab. He said he thought we probably had not meant to do this and we had not. We exchanged it for the twenty I thought I had given and I thanked him very much for his honesty. Not only great dining but an added bonus of honesty!

Exquisite flavors are expressed through a menu of seasonal freshness at Roots. Add to this a top-notch wait staff, a beautifully designed space, and an extensive wine list, and youll see why Roots is an oasis in Camas. Its always a happy dilemma deciding which appetizers and entrees to order, and leaving room for the delicious desserts is a must. Wonderfully original vegetarian options are much appreciated by some in this family, as are the child-friendly offerings for our youngest members. We also enjoy watching the action from Roots lively chefs counter, where we think youll find the best seats in the house.

My wife and I had an expired gift certificate to Roots. We called to see if it would still be honored and the lady we talked to said sure and we made a reservation. We drove 40 minutes out there. We ordered the works and went to pay with the certificate. Our waitress came back and said it had expired and is no longer any good. We explained how somebody had told us the night before that it would be honored and she went to check with the owner. Again she came back and said no good. We asked to see the owner and he came out and bumbled some lame excuses but was adamant that he would not accept the gift certificate despite the fact that somebody on his staff said they would. It's his prerogative to be that way and deny it because it had expired, but he should train his staff better. A little good will would have gone a long way here but because of his attitute we will never go back and will advise others to do the same. So we had to pay double, since it had already been paid for once, for mediocre, overpriced food on cafeteria chairs and drive 40 minutes each way to do it. Thumbs way down.

Cons: overpriced, poor attitude by owner

Not sure how I ended up all the way out here but would probably come back (but not go out of my way to eat here) The "Couve" needs more places like this, competition = better food. With that said, everything I had was just "okay" nothing really stood out. The blackened Ribeye was good, nothing to write home about. Service, drinks, portions, minimalist decor --all were top notch.

Just work on the flavors, suburban restaurants need to take chances with a few innovative dishes and not be so corporate. I can go to any chain restaurant for that.

Pros: Lots of parking (strip mall location) simple decor, attentive waitstaff, outdoor seating

Cons: In the middle of nowhere, average flavors, side dishes were blah...

i've experienced roots a few times in the past (meeting friends in the bar) -- always fun. happy hour menu is one of the best; the drinks always great. the lady bartender rocks!

a very different experience in the restaurant: food really good; wine selection nice; ambience terrible; waiter inconsiderate, tactless.

problem began with seating. there was some confusion as to whether we would just be enjoying a glass of wine or would dine. our choices were to wait for a seat in the bar area or sit at an available table in the dining room. we decided to have food to settle the question. the table was tiny (okay) and crammed so tightly to the next table that i was dodging the bus-person clearing dishes at the next table (not okay). our waiter was either having a bad day or had trained at fast-food 101.

Chose this restaurant for my GF B-day after reading all the glowing reviews. Went there and had a hard time finding the front door. Once I entered the restaurant, I was given a lukewarm greeting by the hostess. Going through the restaurant I found that it is quite small and the enviroment was very loud, I was expecting it to be much larger and the atmosphere romantic. We usually go to Portland City Grill for her B-day but not this time. Now the good part, the food was delicious it was prepared exceptionally well. Our server made sure we had everything we need and even had some good recommendations. All in all i would go eat here on a regular day but if you want to celebrate something special i would go elswhere as the place is quite loud, small and not romantic at all.

My husband and I have been dining at Roots restaurant since they opened in our neighborhood. They have the most incredible food and drinks (using local and organic ingredients whenever possible, a double-plus!)...highly recommended! The staff is awesome too - especially Dave the bartender, he's knowledgeable, funny and makes the BEST drinks in town!! A+++

We visited Roots for the first time, My wife and daughter were quite pleased with the service. We were greated warmly by everyone, it is some times hard to bring a toddler to a nice place, but our server maid us feel welcome. The Bartender even maid a point to check on our drinks showing that he realy cared. Our dinner was outstanding my wife still talks about the moose cake a week later. We will definently be back. cheers!

This was the second time my wife and I ate at Roots. The food was awesome, fresh and inventive. We concentrated on seafood this time, with mussels and razor clams as an appetizer and were both very fresh and very tasty. The mussels more classic, but the razor clams with tomato, onions and aioli were excellent. Entrees of both broiled halibut and salmon were cooked to perfection with very tasty root vegetables. Wine list is fantastic, but they are not shy of pricing, so bring your own. Excellent selections by the glass so you can marry to the course. Highly recommended

We used their private room for a company dinner. Good wine selection. Server had wine knowledge. Our European partner found a wine that he liked from Europe.
Will use for our company Christmas party.

I think we all know noise in a restaurant is common place today. Brad came to Roots from Higgins and Wildwood - hence the noise and good food. The wait staff, most notably the hostess and bartender. If you are "allowed" to sit in the bar, the bartender lacks the requisite personality normally found in the spirits industry. Again, the arrogance (shared with the hostess) of being a big fish in a small pond is present. The gentleman was unable to pour a black and tan. Upon serving it mixed up said, "that's okay, it'll taste the same".

Roots - great food, some server issues. I wonder how they'll fare once the new construction up 192nd, on 164th and on Mill Plain will affect this restaurant. Sadly, as with many unhappy patrons, I have spoken to several people who have had similar experiences.

We had only tried Roots for happy hours. We invited four friends out for Valentines dinner and wanted everything to be perfect. We had early reservations and our table was ready and waiting for us. Our server was an absolute delight and able to handle the different personalities in the group. The vine list was one of the best I have seen on the North side of the river. The food specials for the evening wereWOW..what a wonderful surprise. Great food and presentation. Brad and his staff did a spectacular job. Thanks for making our evening unforgettable.

By now my wife and I have had dinner at Roots over a dozen times (we live in the area). Its amazing, but we've never been disappointed. The food and staff are just great! The menu changes monthly which is very nice. We've eaten in all the best places in Portland and would place Roots with the best of them. Nice not to have to cross the river for great dining!

We finally made the drive from Portland to Camas, WA to try Roots Restaurant and Bar. The drive was shorter than we expected, easy and relaxing. We were extremely impressed by the dramatic, ultra- modern interior- warm but uncluttered, beautiful low lighting, rich earthy woods, impressive doors. Even though the place was full, the noise level was low. We could talk and hear each other easily. The food was absolutely fantastic. We especially loved the hand crafted cheese plate, mixed green salad, halibut and dark chocolate mousse! We can't wait to return, especially once the weather improves and we can sit outside in the beautiful patio!

After reading the two wonderful reviews of Roots (and knowing that the Chef used to be at Higgins), we arranged for a dinner with some friends. Drinks were wonderful ($7-$8 each) and our waiter was very nice. However our consensus was that the evening was "fine". The food was "good".

It is nice to have a restaurant like this in Vancouver - but we all agreed that if we are going to drop $50 per person (includes drinks, salad, dinner, shared desserts and tip) - we have many restaurants in Portland that we would rather go to than one located in a strip mall in Vancouver.

Nice try - but we probably won't be back.

My husband and I visited Roots for dinner after some friends told us how awesome the place is. My husband had the Lambshank, I had chicken, it was delicious. Our service was prompt and friendly but not overbearing. The wine list could use more Northwest wines but other than that everything was wonderful. Can't wait to go back.

Editorial from

Vancouver isn't generally thought of as a culinary destination, and the setting of this seasonally-driven, classically Northwest restaurant in the midst of suburban sprawl does little to hint at the accomplished cooking happening here. But…
