How can the same restuarant chain be so different? The Madison Park service is not so good and the food rushed with so so results. Liked Kirkland. Didn't like Madison Park.

The food here is amazing! If you are looking for a traditional Mexican food restaurant this is not the place for you. They are right next to the beach so they are perfect for ordering something to go and having a picnic on the beach. I recommend the $10 nachos! Everyone is welcome there but the majority of the clientele are wealthy white people that want to be "adventurous".

This is a great place to find some tex-mex food and fantastic margaritas. Staff here has always been friendly and accomodating when asking for substitutions. For a stealthy but attentive server sit in Madison's section, she keeps the chips and water full without getting in the way of conversation your keeping. She's truly a gem!

Pros: Amazing Margaritas

Cons: No reservations for groups smaller than 6

This is one of the best hot spots in Kirkland. Very good food, great location, the guacamole is spectacular. Very cute restaurant and the staff is very friendly.

It had been a while since I had been to the Cactus Restuarant on Madison so reminded by the Rachel Ray Vacation show, we headed down on Sunday around 4pm. I remember how great the food used to be and still is. The butternut squash enchiladas are genius! The food is top notch. What it suffers from is what I find in a lot of Seattle restaurants; bad service and weak drinks.
Our waiter would have been more at home guiding a Universal Studios tour bus. He kept repeating exactly the same routine in the same tour-bus style at every table but I'm not sure he listened to anything the customers said. The first thing he pushed was the guacamole. We said yes but he never brought it. He later said "Oh yeah, that was totally my fault". Duh, it sure wasn't mine. There was no attempt to make it better. Also, the tamales were being "pushed" as well because they were "made fresh daily". does that mean the rest of the food is stale? The "Cactus" margarita was super weak, perhaps the bartender also "forgot" to put tequila in it. The table next to us also complained among themselves about the poor service and weak drinks.
It could have been a great experience but the lack of care from management, (and yes, it's the management's fault if you have lousy staff), made the experience more like mediocre inspite of the excellent food.
I'd like to give it another try, but I won't take anyone there that I'm trying to "Seattle impress".

Cons: Weak drinks, "phoned-in" service

I live close by the Cactus so it used to be my spot in the hood to meet friends. I still go there occassionally because the Mojitos and Margaritas are great but the food has really taken a turn downhill. My recommendation is to go for a drink and the nachos for an early happy hour. If you go later you will end up waiting for an hour or more for mediocre food and will be disappointed.

Eat here if you like quality Mexican food with a twist - and enjoy eating in an echo chamber with people yelling in your ear all through dinner. This restaurant is crowded and unbearably loud. To me, this takes your mind off the quality of the food that they serve. THe server we had was excellent - the food good - the room tastefully decorated. Why do they not seem to care about the noise level when so much attention goes into everything else? Why pay this much to be tortured? A few drapes and acoustic tiles and the problem would be solved. As it is now, Cactus is unbearable and not worth the wait. There are many other restaurants with pleasant and caring environments nearby. Please fix this - I want to enjoy your restaurant.

Cactus has simply succulent food that will make your mouth water when thinking about it. I've been there several times and everytime they have outperformed themselves. The prickly pear mojito is refreshing and their margaritas delectable. It is a little bit pricy for me, but definately worth it for special occasions. I think they would do really well if they opened another location downtown, because Madison Park and West Seattle are a little out of the way for a lot of people.

Pros: food is heavenly, drinks are divine, interesting and fun space

Cons: sometimes is quite busy and seating may take awhile

The wait at this restaurant is unbearable. They make you wait outside and when we were there it was raining. It?s really too bad when a restaurant can not respond to paying customers. I can not say that the food here is worth the wait, and the help is surly and the hostess rude and arrogant. Advice ? go elsewhere and avoid the insult.

The food was pretty good, but i do love the mojitos, more than I like the Cactus margarita. The ambiance is pretty noisy on a Thursday evening, but not too shabby. The service was wonderful, and the waitress was very nice and cooperative with splitting the tab with my fellow co-workers. We were a bit too toasted to ask for separate checks! Whoops! But the location is great, and the crowd seems pretty lively. I would recommend making reservations if you're coming with a large group. The meals can be a bit pricey but it is the location. Everything is expensive up in Madison Park. But overall, it's pretty good food. LOL I had the Green Enchiladas, and it was perfectly spicy!

Pros: Mojitos!!, the staff, and service

I have been to all of the Cactus locations now that they have opened the new one on Alki. The location is great for the summer but the decor is a little ... umm... airport restaurantish. The food is good in all the locations, especially the bacon wrapped peppers. The margaritas are good but on the sweet side. This Cactus is great for the summer with a the garage door walls and the water view.

We've been dinning at the Cactus for many years now. It's trendy & can be romantic at a table for two but it's also perfect for a families. The food is amazing. The mohito's are the best. The only issue is getting a table as it's always packed.

This restaurant is an excellent place to go for normal and special occasions. The food is outstanding and the hardest part is chosing among the many inspured enress. Favorites include chimichanga, chicken fried chicken, and steak frijita. Such a simple embellishment: the chips and salsa arrive warm, fresh and delicious. Going back tonight!

Cons: call ahead for reservations; usually seated withoin 10 monutes of arrival time

I was a little taken aback when I was told there wasn't a blender for the margaritas, but they made me an on the rocks margarita fan. Delicious!
The food was fresh and served with interesting sauces.
As a person who enjoys cooking and sauces the waitress was very helpful in finding out what was in the particular sauces we had with our meals. I appreaciated that openess instead of a "oh it's a secret!" type of answer.

The reason there is a wait so often is that Cactus Madison Park is consistently great! The food is always fabulous, always hot, always delicious. You cannot compare Cactus to a Mexican mom and pop restaurant or a chain restaurant; some of those may be good, but Cactus is in a different league. The Madison Park atomosphere is alive! The energy there and the mix of families, trend setters, business people, etc. is entertaining. Kirkland's Cactus cannot compair. It just doesn't cut it. The space isn't good, energy is different (could just be the difference in neighborhoods) but whatever it is - Madison is the place to be. Busy they are - wait you will - but it is worth it. Wait staff is generally fun and on top of things. Drinks may sometimes be slow, but worth it. Bartenders could be a little friendlier. People seated at the bar often like to talk to bartenders; Cactus bartenders are often too busy to chat or make you feel totally welcomed. That aside, it's a wonderful restaurant. Host Eric ROCKS!

Best dish: carnitas (shredded pork beef)
Best drink: margarita "optima"
Best to seat in the bar area or outside tables.
Ask for guacamole on the side as apetizer.

This is my fiance and I's favorite place, in fact we've turned many of our friends into devoted Cactus patriots as well. Boo to the reviewer who says the food is bland it is by far the BEST mexican food in Seattle! Try the green enchillada, steak fajitas, chimichanga, and the lemon drop from the bar. The wait can-be long but what cactus does is they allow you to put your name in advance then go walk-around the cute Madison Park town or go sit at the public beach next to Lake-Washington then they call you on your cell phone to let you know your table is ready this may appear to some people that they have been waiting longer, but in reality some people prefer to soak up the small town feel of Madison Park instead of standing outside the doorway stewing over the minutes passed until he eats

Arriving at about 1:30 on a Friday, I had to cool my heels while I waited for a seat in the near empty restaurant. I was eventually seated in the bar, where I spent more time waiting for a waiter to appear. This was a sign of what was yet to come: the rice was burnt and the lettuce was wilted.
Cactus is the sort of place to take your grandmother to lunch. The food is so flavor-free that poor dear's digestive system will barely register its presence. It has all the ambiance of a gift shop. Skip the chips and (very mild) salsa that cost $1.50 at lunch.

i went here with a couple of friends on an early afternoon during the weekend. we enjoyed the drinks, food and atmosphere. the service, however, was not so great. our waiter was very snooty and the rest of the wait staff wasn't any better. hopefully it was "just one of those days" and the next time we go there it will be more pleasant.

I was disappointed with Cactus after hearing such great things. Don't get me wrong, the food was great, and I highly recommend the Espinache salad. However, after being told the wait was 20 minutes, my wife and I waited over 40 minutes to be seated, even though groups of 3 or more that arrived well after us were seated well before us. We went on a Tuesday at 7:15. It was packed. By 8:15 there were plenty of seats. Once we were seated and ordered, my tapas arrived before the waitress ever asked if we would like some chips and salsa. We only ordered tapas and salad, but even then it too long for our food to arrive. Furthermore, the tables for two are very tiny.

The menu is delicious, changes with the seasons, the lighting is cozy and inviting, and although the bar is limited to tequilas and rums, wine, beer, etc - their specialty cocktails are divine! The Pear, and the Mojito come to mind, especially. The Pollo Relleno and the Navajo Fry bread are spectacular, and this great experience is so affordable, you never leave feeling like you got a bad deal!

This is some of the very best Mexican food in Seattle. The menu has wonderful variety and everything is delicious. The beauty is that you can taste the subtle textures and flavors in most every dish. And the menu features many ingredients from authentic Mexican cooking. Many entrees are fusion recipes but this isnt Tex-Mex as some ignorant folks have suggested. On top of the great food the cocktails are wonderful and the environment is lively and enjoyable. If there is a knock against Cactus it is that its a victim of its own success. It is not uncommon to wait more than 30-minutes for table (over an hour on weekends) and the service can be slow during these times. I dont care! Some places just deliver. The food and environment are what I enjoy so I can forgive the occasional failing. These rare inconveniences have never spoiled my evening.

AMAZING FOOD AND STAFF! My whole dining experience at Cactus was great from beginning to end. The cute and charming hostess with the short dark hair and beautiful smile was exact with her time estimation. Even on a busy night this place would be worth the wait. The mojitos and margaritas were delicious and at the table my service was excellent. Our young waitress with short blonde hair was not only efficient but entertaining as well. Incredibly helpful and energetic, a treat to be served by such a friendly face. The food (try squash enchiladas) was amazing as always. GREAT PLACE FOR A FIRST DATE!

Allright, though voted one of the best restaurants in Seattle, most of the food is not exactly spectacular. The tamale specials are usually pretty good, I'll give them that. But for the most part, they do not know how to cook meat. The fajita meat is usually dry and I recently had prawns ($18!!), six to be exact, that were totally overcooked. Gross. The "mexican" rice that came with the dish tasted like Uncle Ben's.
Additionally, when given an estimated wait of 30 minutes, we ended up waiting an hour. We watched larger parties that had given their names after ours be seated first. Not cool. We would have made a reservation if they allowed them for parties under five.
Overall, just not really worth the wait anymore...

This restaurant bustles and moves and excites! While you might have to wait a few minutes for a table, the bar is stocked with cute bartenders and great drinks so the wait is pleasant. The food is fantastic--they make a mean fajita, and they have excellent fry bread. The restaurant is small and intimate, and you'll find that with the combination of great food, zesty decor, and fabulous service, you'll want to return!

I love this place. The food is excellent, the drinks are delicious, and the service is usually outstanding! You have never had a chile relleno like this... or mashed potatoes, or tacos, or brownies! Everything is fresh and very flavorful, and did I mention the drinks are delicious? And if you like chocolate, get the Cowgirl Brownie: a dark, deep, fudgy brownie covered with cinnamon ice cream, carmel sauce, and LOVE! It is TO DIE FOR.

We went for an impromptu birthday dinner on a Saturday night. We were seated immediately on the sidewalk and served promptly. Our server was a friendly gentleman and, without being asked, sent a complimentary dessert to us as a birthday present. In a day and age when solicited requests for this type of treatment are ignored I want to commend Cactus for their generosity. Though one set of passersby were rude be stopping to talk and lean on the partition right where we were eating, the experience was extemely pleasant. My preconceived notions of this richy-rich area were extinguished by the down-to-earch staff. Thanks Cactus!

What a dissappointment! I was saddened that the molcajete with yucatecas style pork was no longer offered as a dinner. I was told the pork could be had for dinner in the style of "street tacos." I gathered from the dry, tough pork and stale tortillas that the server actually meant to say "leftover from lunch". My disappointment was further intensified when I ordered the lamb tapas. The meat was overcooked and seasoned so excessively that whatever lamb flavor was left was impossible to distinguish. The anasazi beans could have used another ten to fifteen on the boil. They were still chalky rather than delicate and creamy. The rice was undercooked with a dreadfully crunchy center. I doubt I will return, there were just too many things wrong and too many other opportunities for a good meal. Finally, the General Manager never responded to my letter of complaint.

Pros: unique dishes, beautiful, great drinks

Cons: parking can be tricky, spendy

I've been to Cactus several times, and everything I've ordered (or have eaten off of someone else's plate!) has been tasty. I get cravings for their scrumptious Navajo bread and the mojitos are excellent! It's a delightful place to eat, indoors and on the patio, one of the liveliest spots in Madison Park. I see other raters had to wait for a table, but I never have. A fun place to meet with friends or just your honey. My honey and I both love it.

This place is so overrated. After waiting over an hour for a table, we were told there were no tapas because the kitchen was being remodeled (???). Then I got my 15 dollar fajitas and wished the portion was about 3x as big.
It's got a great location, but there are so many other better restaurants to spend your hard-earned money.

This place is overpriced and overcrowded. The nachos were good, but they better have been for 8.50. The margaritas use mix instead of lime juice and after about 6pm, the place is noisy and the good seats are gone, not to mention the pretentious, trying to re-live the old fratty days clientele. The food is not bad, but it's also not traditional mexican. Too much Tex, not enough Mex.

Though I'd hardly call it "autentico," Cactus is nevertheless a pleaser. With polite and professional service, innovative culinary concoctions, and a happenin' Madison Park location, it's easy to overlook the B+ margaritas. My recommendations include the Navajo torta, nachos, and calamari. Misses for me have thus far been few, but include the fried green tomatoes (measly portions) and the deceptively lovely purple prickly pear margarita.

Fabulous tapas and great service. Everything that we had was terrific and our server made some great suggestions. We'll be regulars for sure!

I discovered this place on a friends reccomendation about 4 yrs ago, when the restaurant was only one small room. It was crazy, but it was worth the wait. It had great food, decent service, and a very festive atmosphere. What the #@ll happened? I have been to the place about 5-6 times in the last year, each time hoping it will be good, again. No luck. Every meal that (we) have had has been an overpriced dissappointment. The food is just not good anymore. Not a great taste, not fresh, not very well prepared (chewy meat, unfresh seafood, etc.). Margaritas are good though, and the service and atmosphere are decent

I am sorry, but this place sucks. I ate at the one in Kirkland. It's pricey, and tries way to hard to 'chic'.
Instead of a basket of multi colored tortilas that are cold, thick and hard, how about a basket of tender warm tortilas like at Gorditos? They had all these Enchilda dishes that were just some meat and some sauted onions sandwiched between tortila chips. You don't do that. You boil the chicken, then shred it, the saute it with ingredients, and wrap in corn of flower TORTILA. Not Tortila chips. Pretentioius, overpriced... typical kirkland unfortunately.

I absolutely love this place. The decor both inside and out is full of character...and it helps that its in Madison Park..I liked this restaurant from the minute I walked it..it was buzzing. The Cocktail bar has every type of tequilla known to man and just about anything else you care to name. By far the most outstanding Mexican i've had since moving to Seattle...The only down side I can point out is the long wait for a table (and a drink!) on a Friday or Saturday evening..but if you ask me its worth it. (even if its just for the salsa that comes with the chips...)

I recently took a friend from London here because he was craving good Mexican. The ambience was fabulous (inside or out), the service was great and the food was spectacular. But most importantly, the margaritas were perfect. Sit outside under a heat lamp and pretend that you are in an authentic hot Latin spot.

I have been searching for a good mexican resturant in Seattle since I moved here 4 years ago. Cactus fits the bill in every way. The tapas are truly extraordinary; try the Grilled Asparagus with Smoked Fresno Chili Aioli. The guacamole and fajitas are fresh, tasty and the portion size is excellent. The pineapple mojito was very good and the sangria was fairly authentic.
On a busy Saturday evening the service was top notch, helpful but not intrusive. The location in Madison Park is beautiful and fun, though parking can be a bit difficult.

I recently dined at Cactus with three friends (little double date action). We enjoyed our meal of assorted tapas, and the friendly, honest waiter. We didn't have reservations and were initially told it was an hour wait. No sooner had we piled in our car to hit a different spot did we get a call that a table was ready. We started with mojitos and classic cactus margs - both worth more than one round. Our assorted tapas dinner was perfect for a double date; a variety of wonderful flavors and textures but not too much of any one. Our waiter was helpful and shared his honest opinion about which ones were a hit and which to avoid. Many were spicy but not overkill - a welcome mist on the brow and excuse to polish off another marg. Cactus is worth the wait, and price.

Cactus in Madison Park is much better than Cactus in Kirkland - both in ambience and food. Cactus in Madison Park is one of the few restaurants in Seattle where it it worth the one-hour wait. The food and service are consistently excellent. It is the one restaurant I crave upon coming back to Seattle after being out of town for an extended time.

My family and I have never walked out of a resturaunt.....until we set foot in Cactus. We were essentially ignored by the wait staff who proceeded to serve everyone around us. Was it because we were the only minorities in the place? Probably not, but it sure felt that way. The food looked good, but I don't need a side of pretentious service with my meal. There are better places to eat in Seattle...

I have been to Cactus enough times that I am on the verge of regular. I continually go back for the ambiance, the Mojitos, the people, the Mojitos, the food, the Mojitos. The folks who work there from the bartendar and the folks at the door to the waitstaff are top notch. Plus, they make the absolute best Mojitos.

I highly recommend Cactus.

Ate there for the first time recently, and LOVED it! The wait was about 25 minutes on a summer Wednesday evening. Because of it's proximity to the water, we just walked to the water and enjoyed the air until they called us on our cell phone to come back and be seated. The food was SO GOOD! The menu is different than most Mexican/Southwest restaurants so it was great to try some new dishes. You can't go wrong with this place!

Strolling in Madison Park one day, we debated where to eat, so we decided on the only place that had a crowd! Pork and Carne Asada taco dishes that were quite yummy, and had excellent, artful presentation; good, attentive service by pleasant gal who's been there for some time. Has new location in posh downtown Kirkland waterfront now, also.

Getting a table at Cactus, especially on weekends, can result in long waits. But, once seated, your dining experience will be a fun-filled, tasty one. I highly recommend the chimicanga washed down with a tunarita (prickly pear margarita). The service is always friendly, and the atmostphere sets the mood for an enjoyable dining experience.
