Twice now my daughter has came home from this business crying. On Tuesday, she was paired with a boy who was obviously much older than her, and quite a bit larger. During the "sparing" exercise where the children attempted to tag and feint, the boy clipped her in the mouth. This contact caused her mouth to bleed. Tonight she came home in tears because my husband didn't have her "discipline" sheet. One simple solution would be to have asked him if she had practiced self discipline.

I was hoping for an encouraging environment where my daughter would be able to come out of her shell and gain self confidence, that was not presented in these classes.

It makes no difference how many "best of" awards a business wins from the internet where all it takes is one well connected social network friend to post on your behalf and have the votes skewed to your favor.

I was hoping for Mr. Miyagi, instead we found Cobra Kai.

I will not give a business like this my hard earned money, and I am going to strongly encourage others not to as well. We will happily find another martial arts school for my daughter.

Business Response:

You’re right, that would have been a simple solution to ask your husband if she had practiced self-discipline at home, which we did. He said “not that I know of”. I then explained that we don’t let them get their black stripe until the parents approve their red stripe, and I explained the discipline sheet and he said “I have no idea what you’re talking about – my wife told me nothing”. Then I said I don’t normally let them take the test until they get their red stripe and was ready to reschedule her test, and he said something about “well tonight I’m going to decide if we enroll”, basically making me feel like if I didn’t let her in you guys would be mad. So I let her take the test, she did great and she had a great time. She in fact did come out of her shell, especially when she broke the board. She was disappointed not to get her black stripe, but I explained to her that her mom had to approve her red stripe and as soon as you did I would give her the black stripe since she did great on the test. Then your husband tried to talk me down on the price, and when I said no he told your daughter that you weren’t enrolling and she started crying. I wasn’t the one who made your daughter cry; your husband did, twice. When he wouldn’t vouch for her red stripe and when he didn’t want to enroll her. I’m sorry she got hit in the mouth, and I explained to you before that I would find a class for her where the kids were more appropriately sized for her so she would enjoy herself. That is not a normal occurrence in our classes, however it is karate. I’m also sorry that your experience isn’t what I would have liked it to be. We really do have the best classes in town, and when you look at other schools (and I encourage you to) you will recognize the quality of our program. It seems to me there is a simple misunderstanding here that could have been solved with a phone call. After your initial email of this information I did reach out to you by phone so we could have a conversation about your experience but you would not return my calls. Good luck at whatever you decide to do, sincerely, Damon

Good: Tong is a good martial artists. Really good. His staff is well trained also. They will teach you the techniques to defend yourself.
Bad: The attitude of the place is all wrong for self-defense. Timid people are easy victims for a mugging and this place does nothing to improve a persons aggression. Aggression is what helps you survive. As a soldier, I'd say this place will not increase your chances of surviving a violent encounter. And it's uber-expensive.

The good: The owner, Damon Tong knows his stuff. He is a good instructor.

The bad: Damon Tong is motivated by money alone. He has students buy equipment that is never used and the cost of classes are the highest around. He can get somewhat mean with students at times.

My wife and I had originally signed our son up at this school as a way of getting him to try new activities. After we watched the classes my wife and I decided to join and now we have an excellent family activity together. The first thing that impressed us was how respectful and disciplined the young students were. Mr. Tong and and ALL of the instructors take a lot of pride in teaching character to the students and not just the physical aspects of the martial arts. In my opinion this is the best school in the Pacific Northwest bar none.

Before joining Warhorse Karate/Jiu Jitsu, my son was struggling in school and losing his confidence so much that he was beginning to give up on everything that became difficult. Having him commit to becoming a black belt was the best decision that we ever made because he learned perseverance. This karate school teaches their students the character skills needed to achieve black belt. So while my son was having a great time practicing karate in class, he was hearing the instructors continuously speaking about discipline, focus, respect, confidence and self control. Learning to be focused and disciplined has helped my son tremendously in school and becoming a black belt has given him self esteem that will last a lifetime.

Warhorse Karate - Jiu Jitsu is a great school. As a student there, I can attest that they 1) put character first, teaching the students to be better people, 2) encourage students to improve, by working hard and doing better every time they get on the mat, and 3) teach a quality, real-world based self-defense program.

My entire family has been involved in Warhorse Karate / Jiu Jitsu (AKA Elite Martial Arts) for almost 5 years. I am a pacifist at heart and was skepticaI of martial arts until I met Mr. Tong. From the first day he taught my son, I was incredibly impressed. He treated him with respect and expected the same respect in return. My daughter joined shortly afterwards. And my husband and I followed suit. Besides the excellent instruction in self-defense techniques, the self-confidence that we all have developed is immeasurable. The character skills are lived, taught and expected. The encouragment we have received has been bountiful.

Warhorse has been like a second family to us. Warhorse has personally been a life-saver to me. I began it while recovering from breast cancer. I am now almost ready to test for my first degree - at 51 years old! I feel younger and happier and more alive than I have in years.

I would recommend Warhorse to anyone. And as far as the cost goes, it's far worth it! It's worth more than it, in fact.

If you are looking for a place that will build self esteem, respect and discipline (just to name a few things) while having a blast doing it, then Elite Martial Arts is where you need to go. Mr. Tong and his entire staff are dedicated to the positive development of their students with the use of martial arts both physically and mentally. Elite Martial Arts has been a large part of my nephew's life for the past 12 years and is a big contributor to the fine young man he has become. He has great self esteem and a confidence that pushes him to test his limits and grow beyond them. He loves the work out it provides and the discipline it demands. He has become a 2nd degree Black Belt and is now an instructor himself passing along all the wonderful things he has learned from Mr. Tong. The curriculum is varied and keeps the students excited and engaged, not bored. They will get a taste of many different types of martial arts to make them well rounded mixed martial artists. The whole staff is there to help with what ever you need. They are the bomb!! We truly love Elite Martial Arts and the karate family that we have inherited. We' never go anywhere else. :-)

Elite Martial Arts has a great reputation as being the best all around school in Spokane. To see what the parents of the school think, check out the 50 testimonials on "Z Best" of Spokane list.

We bought a membership for my son to learn Karate moves. He was taught a lot more than that. He was taught self respect, discipline, how to be kind to others, self motivation, and how to use karate as a defense mechanism only not a fighting tool. The customer service was great, the staff was kind and willing to help with anything we needed and very workable with cost as well. I would recommend them to any family that would like their child to learn good values along with the way to deal with obstacles that may be difficult in a child's life. I have learned this is a great way for a child to express their feelings as well, parents I would enroll your kids and watch them grow!

I went to this karate school for 10 years, by far this is the most educational defensive program. I was forced to move otherwise i would still be there and most likely have a job. This is a perfect place to start if your young or getting on in years.

my daughter has been in Elite Martial Arts and I'm not seeing her able to protect herself. I pay alot of money for this and still have to buy all her equipment which they only use 3 months at a time then put into her closet for there after.
She says we don't attack right in order for her to defend. Should they be showing more how to defend no matter the attack?
just my opinion. We still have another yr. to go, so we'll see.
