The Ave is full of coffee shops and cafes, but none feel quite as cozy and comfortable as the Ugly Mug. Nestled in an apartment building a half a block off of the Ave, the Ugly Mug eschews the hip urban cafe vibe in favor of something resembling your grandma's sitting room. It's a perfect place for a deep discussion or to just sit alone in warmth as the Seattle rains settle in.

This little cafe, right off of The Ave, is a sanctuary for stressed-out students. The atmosphere is great for some quiet studying. Choose from a variety of seating options including their super comfy couch. There is also seating for smaller groups and a varied soup and sandwich menu for lunch.

Great atmosphere and good coffee, what more does a student need?

I've been going here since last year and recently the new owner made some noticeable changes. The cafe has a new look now, though I was a bit sad that they got rid of some menus, but the sandwiches are still tasty and got bigger. I love their raspberry scones especially; they are home-made. The drinks are good at a low-cost and Ugly Mug has become one of my favorite place to hang out.

I LOVE scones and this little cozy cafe has the BEST raspberry scone!!!
I just can't get enough of it! I love their decor and the atmosphere. Friendly people and good lattes and sandwiches too. This is now my favorite little spot.

We went to the Ugly Mug because it was listed and recommended in CitySearch - bad choice!! The half sandwiches are little more than finger sandwiches, the bread was hard and overtoasted, and the service was mediocre. We had a meatloaf sandwich and the slice of meatloaf was about 1 mm thick. Also it smelled faintly of old lady and was blasting muzak from a radio station that wasn't coming in clearly. We will not be going back.

I was expecting more of a restaurant, but the coffee house style of Ugly Mug was a welcome surprise. The kitschy art and mis-matched furniture perfectly complimented the homemade-gourmet food. The menu is small but satisfying, and the daily specials always hit the spot. They also have excellent coffee and an Ovaltine latte. Delicious!

In Short
Home-style soups, created daily from fresh ingredients, include white bean and curried lentil. Sandwiches such as turkey and Havarti (heaps of turkey and sliced carrots on fresh panzanella bread) and meat loaf are also…
