The Scene
Patience is still a virtue, and waiting outside this simply furnished cafe for Sunday morning brunch is still part of the Julia's experience. But the casual atmosphere and friendly (if occasionally frazzled) staff make it a satisfying destination. Hungry diners fend off hunger pangs by ducking into the small, warm bakery annex and grabbing a fresh-baked pastry.

The Food
The wide-ranging breakfast menu encompasses traditional American and vegetarian fare, self-designed omelettes and south-of-the-border inspirations. Try perfect hollandaise-cloaked eggs Benedict, or dinner plate-sized pancakes sandwiching a generous helping of blueberries. Sadly, eggs poached too long and over-easy eggs that arrive over-hard can mar otherwise well-prepared dishes. Simple food wins at lunch: Go for the fish and chips, veggie burgers and salads with fresh-baked bread.

Key Points

  • Light Space; Bright Moods
  • Great for Families
  • Large space for Groups

The Inside Scoop

  1. When to Go - Locals from the neighborhood gather for the live jazz piano on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.

Best Breakfast in Wallingford

by Annie D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,119

Julia's has amazing breakfast with an emphasis on healthy selections. Fresh ingredients and an organic spin on classic breakfast dishes make this a must for health-food fanatics. An occasional long wait is well worth it for the food.

One of my favorite breakfast places

by Lori S. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 108

I love going to this Julia's for breakfast and have been doing so for years. I love their scrambles and pancake dishes, as well as their coffee cake. Often the wait is long for breakfast, but I don't mind as I go check out the Wallingfor Center for a bit and come back.

Great Breakfasts

by Laura G. | insider Insider | Rank: 13,250

Julia's is famous for it's breakfasts, and there will be a line on weekend mornings. It's worth it. Delicious pancakes, scrambles, and omelettes, with a healthy, hippy dippy vibe. VERY good coffee. Kid friendly too. Great place to take the family.

Healthy lunch for a great price!

by FUNMOMMY11

My friend took me here last week for lunch, this little place was busy for a Tuesday, I guess people still have some money to eat out. Service was friendly and efficient, our lunch was delicious. I had a huge Caesar salad and my friend a Chicken wrap. Our bill was under $20.00, maybe that is why this place was busy. Why would anyone do fast food, were you spend easily the same amount for 2 people. I go to Julia's any day to get a good healthy meal for a great price.

Pros: Easy parking

Great service, Great food!

by baker80

I am always on the hunt for a great new restaurant to eat at. Over the weekend my friends and I went to Julias in Wallingford. The hostess at the door was very nice and led us to a candle lit table by the window. The atmosphere was very uplifting and our server checked on us repeatedly, not only to bring us an amazing bread basket with garlic, but also to refill our drinks before our food came. When our food did come all I can say is WOW!!! Not only were the portions huge, but they were incredible! I cannot wait until lunch tomorrow to finish my chicken dish. I loved it there and highly recommend it. My friends and I stayed there for well over two hours and our server still continued to fill our drinks. It was a great experience!!!

Pros: food, local parking, great service

Bad Value

by iebbob

Julia's is a has-been, a restaurant once delightful and now a relatively awful place in which you feel the owner couldn't care less about the experience. We had dinner there, were sherparded to a small part of the restaurant, served by a nice woman who appeared to be hostess, waitress and, for all we know, cook. Rock music played fairly loudly in the background, the waitress was (sorry) sloppy and the both dishes we ordered were simply blah at best.

We won't be back and suggest you skip the experience. I suspect I'll drive by the Wallingford location one of these days and see the restaurant is gone. And, frankly, that will be a good thing.

Dinner is slow, but breakfast honey is a smash!!!

by Jakemaster

Somehow I find myself dining at julias not only for its amazing breakfast but more importantly its value! Typically I go to the wallingford location for breakfast and the queen anne location for dinner, they are two very different restaurants however but share the same ideals of service for the most part. I'm more of a naturalist and look for ingredients that are made from scratch. I'm always happy when I leave Julia's, yeah sometimes the servers are slower than others but heck at least its not corporate and your not paying corporate prices, being shuttled in and out like cattle.

best breakfast

by tintin66

Went today with a bunch of friends to this hangout. It was very busy, but while waiting we were offered to go into the bakery to get some coffee and baked goods while waiting. Their carrot raisin muffins were amazing. Got seated about 15 min after we arrived. The waitress refilled our cups immediately. We got our food pretty quickly as well, considering how busy they were. The portions were tasty and generous. Heard that Julia's has other locations in Seattle neighborhoods, definitely will try them out as well.

Pros: reasonable prices, friendly and quick

A stable place in the neighborhood

by lisa2223

My husband, and children have been going to Julia's for years. We have had breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner at this neighborhood place. Yes it is not a fancy stiff place, it is simple with its decor, but the staff is always friendly, very good with kids and most important very consistent with the food. The portions are generous, freshly prepared and tasty. Again nothing fancy here just a lot of good comfort food. And very reasonable prices, we can have a meal for 2 adults and 2 kids with drinks for under $40.00.

Pros: reasonable priced, good food, very friendly

I am hoping a owner/manager reads this

by MsReba

Born and raised in Seattle, I have been coming to Julia's off and on for over 10 years for mostly breakfast and lunch. Lately, my sweetie and I have made a few trips there for breakfast and last weekend was the last time unless someone begins to care about cleanliness. I have always noticed it's not the cleanest place, but could overlook it, this time it all came together for me.
We came around 8:15am, they open at 8am, about 5 tables full so far, I could actually see the across the whole floor, under the tables was food and dirt from previous days customers, it looked like it hadn't seen a mop in a while, dusty, grimey corners too..I accidently spilled a bit of water on our table and used a napkin to wipe it up, to my disgust the napkin was filthy (which prompted me to "really" look at the table) the table was crusty and dirty from other peoples feasts, and not just in one spot,. Our waiter was very kind and he noticed the whole dirty table without me even pointing it out, he cleared it all and wiped it down. The blown glass art in the windows is always coated with dust, the walls at the tables are always dirty and sticky with food, fingerprints and who knows what. After we ate, I went to use the ladies room and when I walked in, I stood there for a minute then pretty much walked out and held it, it absolutely wreaks of urine in there. I have noticed it before and just thought they were having a bad cleaning week. This place needs to be bleached down and cleaned up on a regular basis, I am wondering what the kitchen looks like where customers don't go. I am scared to eat there anymore and sad because I really like to go there. It also gives the feeling that someone does not care.

Pros: Good Seattle place for breakfast/brunch

Cons: Unclean, uncared for

Poor service, blah food

by elizabet1231

I don't recommend eating here. I've tried it twice, thinking the first time was just an off day, but nope, not going back. Food is waaaay overpriced. A sandwich is $7.50+ and it comes with fruit however it also only comes with one slice of meat (I tried the reuben first time and turkey second time). You read that right, one slice of meat. And not a nice thick slice of fresh turkey but a thin sliver that didn't cover the bread. When mentioned to the waitress just nodded and walked away. The restaurant is cold so we sat bundled in jackets. Also the waitress kept walking between our table and a column, taking a short cut to the table behind us. Problem was she couldn't exactly fit so kept bumping our chair and frankly her rear-end in our lunch plate wasn't improving our lunch enjoyment. But the food is poor quality, tiny portions for the price and not welcoming service. Too many other fabulous restaurants in Seattle to waste time and money here.

Amazing Breakfast

by hildegarden

We just moved to Wallingford and our new neighbors recommended this restaurant to try out. We came here with our two children, immediately had crayons and a children's menu to color for the kids, our coffee came quickly as well, good and strong just the way we like it. The menu selection was extensive and very reasonable priced. Our breakfast was delicious and the portions were generous. Service was equally good, we will be back.

Pros: generous portions, resonable priced, friendly service.

Slow Breakfast Service, Horrible Omelettes and Potatoes

by chelle2119

We went to Julia's yesterday, it was my first experience there and needless to say I won't be going back. They were having a busy morning but the wait list for seating was short (we were 2nd on the list). Although they had multiple open tables, we waited over 15 minutes to be seated. Once we were seated, we had to ask two different servers for coffee. People who were seated after us ordered before us. When our waitress finally did show up, she curtly said "I didn't see you sitting there." No apologies.

We then waited around 20 minutes to get our food. In my experience, Breakfast should be quick. It shouldn't take an hour to get seated, order, and get food.

I ordered a Denver Omelette and it was the worst omelette, I ever had. The eggs were thin and flat instead of fluffy. The eggs were so thin that when my omelette arrived it had a tear down the middle. There were too many green peppers and onions in the omelette and not enough ham or cheese. The potatoes were over seasoned to a point where they left a bad taste in my mouth.

At least the toast was good, but how can you screw that up?

Julia's is supposedly a Seattle establishment, but if you are want a good, quick, quality breakfast I would go somewhere else!

Pros: Toast

Cons: Slow Service, Bad Food

The bakery is still good, but probably will never eat in the restaurant again!

by tigrrrl

I used to eat here all of the time - big lover of the nutburger w/avocado + jack cheese, large salad bowls and desserts. Had hair in my food more than once but didn't stop my enthusiasm for the place. I had two bad experiences - #1 A birthday dinner of nasty eggplant pancakes with an overkill of red pepper flakes, very dissapointing - I actually called the manager and suggested they never serve again. #2 Delicious fish & salad combo, tasty but contaminated with hepatitis from some gnarly unwashed server's hands. I had to go get a shot in the butt!. The management apologized, but didn't offer to reimburse me for my meal and that sort of ended my patronage of Julia's. However, I still love the bakery and will snap up those scones any time that I happen to be in the neighborhood.

Pros: Great Nut Burgers!

Cons: Sometimes Servers Don't Wash Their Hands With Bad Consequences

Great all-around restaurant

by marc191

The wait (to be seated) times on weekend mornings can be considerable, but the food is worth it! The wait staff is friendly and competent, and the food is made from the finest and freshest ingredients. The atmosphere is casual and easygoing--so, don't worry about how well dressed you are, or aren't.
When it comes to the food: Voila! There are numerous choices--in the mornings--of omelets, pancakes, muffins, cereals, etc. Then, in the afternoons one can choose from the freshly prepared sandwiches, salads, soups and hot entrees. Finally, the dinners are complete with main entrees and side dishes at reasonable prices.
This restaurant is your basic satisfying community diner, with a fine bakery thrown into the bargain.

Pros: Fine food and service at a good price

Cons: Very slow in terms of seating on Sunday mornings

Avoid for Dinner

by edmillionaire

I had been warned by locals that this restaurant was not good for dinner, but I gave it a chance anyway. Result: Mediocre to deplorable food and openly contemptuous staff.
We were a party of 7 in an otherwise empty restaurant around 6 on a Saturday night. Service was fine during first half of dinner. A few ordered fish and chips, which was pretty good. Nice seasoning in the batter. Burger was mediocre. Chicken Forestiere was flavorless and the vegetables were over-seasoned. Portobello sandwich: the mushroom was way overcooked and had too much vinegar. First round of drinks were flat.
Service rapidly spiraled into hostility around check time. We had told the server that we needed to split the check when we first sat down, and arranged ourselves to allow for easy check splitting. Regardless we were presented with a consolidated check, and when we reminded him that we had asked for it to be split his response was "You know, people have paid this way before." We found this response unacceptable and insisted he split the bill anyway as we had asked originally. He cam back to the table, having either forgotten how we had split our order (which is his job to keep track of), or having not tracked it in the first place.

Prior to this I had also presented him with a $10 coupon I had printed from this site, and he said that since he had to spend so much time splitting our check (which he should have done in the first place) he was not going to accept the coupon. I told him that if time was an issue that I could speak to someone else. His tone became immediately arrogant: "I'm the owner's son. there is no one else to speak to. I'm not taking the coupon." And walked off.
Later, as we were paying some of my tablemates had questions about the check, and he was rude each time. We couldn't wait to leave.

To the owners: You might want to staff a supervisor for your son, or at least explain to him that heritage is not an excuse for poor customer service.

Pros: Prompt seating; decent vegetarian selection

Cons: Inconsistent food quality; hostile staff

Breakfast worth the wait

by mammagirl

My friend and I went to Julia's this weekend. Saw the crowd and had to check it out. We were getting pretty hungry during the 20 minute wait, but grabbed a latte next door at their bakery to hold off starvation. It was so worth it. The server was friendly, funny and efficient. The food was great and it was a good thing we were hungry the pancakes and omelettes were huge. A great people watching place.
We'll be back...probably next weekend.

We are new to the wallingford neighborhood and love all the little shops and restaurants. a neighbor recommended julia's and we tried it out on a recent weekend. we got there early, so the line was only a few minutes long. we were seated by the window and checked out this little busy restaurant. our coffe came promptly and was strong, the food arrived in less than 15 minutes, everything was very tasty, the kids loved their smily-faced pancakes. service was friendly and fast as well. we will be back and try it for lunch next time.

bets coffeecake

by kealrasd

We have been to Julia's many times for lunch and dinner, but on a recent sunday we went for breakfast. We started our meal with a cup of coffee and a coffeecake, while we waited for the rest of our breakfast.
This coffeecake was absolutley wonderful, better than my moms old recipe. The rest of our breakfast was delicious as well, and great friendly service.
On the way out we stopped by Julia's bakery, which is right next to the restaurant and took some of the coffeecake home for the next day. We also found some great vegan goodies and loaded up on them.

Pros: bakery next door, reasonable prices, easy parking

A coworker took me here for lunch last week. I ordered a hamburger and was surprised about the excellent quality of meat and the generous portion. Turns out after asking our waiter that this restaurant uses Misty Iles beef for their burgers. It is a local farm on Vashon Island that raises hormonfree beef. (for all you meat-lovers)
Service was friendly and quick, just what you need in your lunch break.
Thank you, and we'll be back.

On the decline

by arielmeadow

I've eaten at Julia's for years, and usually found the food hearty, healthy and satisfying. But my last few brunches there have been poorly presented, lackluster, and disappointing. For example: a cold cinnamon roll with butter on top and rock-hard frosting? A shrimp scramble with no shrimp? An omlette with no taste? Has something changed at Julia's? Because it's just not as good as it used to be.

Disappointed

by wimisy

My husband and I went there for dinner. I had the linguine and shrimp. The pasta was so overdone it was like eating a mouthful of mush...i simply couldn't get it down. I tried to discreetly ask the waiter if this was the expected texture for this dish. He loudly and I mean loudly asked me if I wanted him to redo it. I was a tad embarrassed now that the all the tables around me were part of the discussion and backed down. He also informed me it was fresh homemade pasta. I happen to know that this doesn't equate to mush but overcooking. The plate was not worth the money and the quality was terrible. I took it home but will contact management today since 23 years in the business prevents me from just letting this go.

good food on the second try

by quinto75

the food is awesome but it takes two tries. HOWEVER, the service is terrible. out server was very rushed and not very helpful. when our food arrived, my blueberry pancakes were awesome but I soon realized that they were also VERY undercooked and runny. when I tried to get our server's attention, she dropped off our check and told us to have a great day. I had to follow her and tell her that my food wasn't fully cooked. She did have some more pancakes made for me, which were equally delicious. but afterwards she seemed to disappear and we couldn't find her to get our new bill!!

Pros: great food, lots of menu choices

Cons: , small noisy tables

Soy Butter?

by cherisev

While I was unaware of Julia's more health friendly menu, I was not overjoyed with soy butter and flavorless bread. I had the fish and chips which were good, but I would necessarily go back again. Many if the menu items were interesting to me, but wanted without soy which could not be done.

these folks really know how to dish up some great food at a good value. we are new in town and this place was recommended by a friend. We visited last Sunday with our two teenage boys. The place was busy, but our wait was shortened by a great cup of coffee we were offered in the little bakery.
