I've come here since elementary school, when my entire family would sit at the sushi bar and chat with the sushi chef, learning how to order in Japanese and more about the sushi culture. I went away to college on the other side of the country and hadn't been in 8 years, but I just revisited tonight to find the same chef and the same pleasant conversation, friendly service, and some of the best sushi I've ever tasted. If you don't know the Japanese names for what you want to order, just ask and they are more than happy to tell you what everything is and what temporary additions to the menu you should try out. I'm glad nothing's changed here and plan to keep coming to Koharu for years to come.

One of the few Japanese-owned Japanese restauraunts in town. The sushi bar is tucked away in the back. A wonderful atmosphere for visiting--my husband loves to banter in Japanese with the sushiya. Table seating and tatami rooms are available. The food is spectacular, but a little pricey.

We often have lunch here. It's my favorite Japanese restaurant in the area. The food is consistently excellent, fresh, beautiful. I have eaten almost every item on the menu at one time or other, and have never had a bad choice.
Coming off a standard strip mall along 99, this is a hidden jewel. When you arrive you are greeted with a standard Japanese welcome, "Irasshae masae" and a hurrying waitress to show you to your table. The decor is pleasant, quiet, relaxing, spotless, modern Japanese with a sushi bar at the end of the room. It feels very Japanese to me including hot towels to refresh you before the meal, lovely fragrant green tea, and quick, pleasant service.

The pricing seems moderate to me, especially compared to other good quality Japanese restaurants.

Beer, sake and wine are available. I would (and have) taken anyone here, including children. Even if you don't like sushi or sashimi (raw fish), you will find other Japanese dishes such as teriyaki, udon, katsudon (pork cutlets on noodles), etc. cooked to perfection. I think you'll like it.

This is a good option for having a nice Japanese dinner in the Seattle area (something harder to do than you might imagine). The only real drawback is that it's located amid the endless chain stores and shopping centers of Federal Way. The cooking and service is very good, though. Prices are moderately expensive, but generally worth it.

PROS: Good-tasting food
CONS: Location
