Enjoyed meeting and talking with the inspector who came out. Clearly knowledgeable about roofing. The situation is that I had a roof replacement performed a couple years ago and have some recurring leaks. The reason for hiring your reference was to get an unbiased opinion as to what was causing the leaks and whether a competent roofer should have been able to avoid them. I was disappointed when the inspection report came back with a non-committal statement about one particular source of leaks. In my discussion with the inspector while he was on site, my understanding was that he felt the roofer should have avoided the leaks. The report did not reflect that. I followed up with an e-mail addressing this issue and got back another noon-committal response expressing concern that the inspector felt it may be a legal issue. What I wanted was an expert opinion on whether standard roofing practices were followed (either way - I just wanted an expert opinion I could bring to the table when dealing with the roofer if they did not follow good practices) but didn't get it.
Also, the inspector showed up with a bill for the entire service. I should have known better, but he seemed like an honest person, so I paid the whole thing. He did get me a report, but it was lacking in one important aspect. Next time I'll pay for the time spent and pay the remainder upon receipt of the report. I guess I have to assume he doesn't feel the roofer should be held liable, but I wish he had said that from the start.
