It's hard to fathom the mangement philosophy at SMB. I have personally witnessed three seperate clients complain about the same broken stair climber over the course of several weeks. Management response in each case was to reassure the client and return the equipment to the floor. This machine could easily result in injury to the unwary. One client turned the machine upside down where it stood but management simply returned it to general use.

The staff is not particularly helpful or friendly and the owner is exactly as many of these reviews describe her: the worst enemy a small business ever had. She's a penny pinching, unfriendly and unwelcoming person who is happy to overcharge for lousy service. My guess is that the reason the staff is so unresponsive is that they are terrified of her.

If ony the place wasn't so damn convenient I would quit...

SMB is a great place to work-out. Not a meat-market, experienced staff to help out. Great atmosphere and lots of space. Easy to get a good workout completed in an efficient mannor. Love it!

Pros: Lots of equipment-and current technology

Cons: parking can be a challenge in the winter

My membership was ruined by an interaction I had with the owner. As a small business owner myself I cannot understand treating clients with no respect for no reason.

Seriously?!?!?!?!?!?!!!! There is actually a sign up now that says "You must stay towel dry on the machines... do not let your sweat drip onto and into the machine" Then it goes on to some stupid explanation of how it's bad for the machines and hard to maintain them when people are dripping sweat all over the place.

How the **** am I supposed to not sweat on a step mill? I train for hiking on that and am sweating after 10 minutes. What? Am I supposed to turn off my sweat glands temporarily or something?

How about this? Take the $150 I wasted on my joining fee and hire someone to clean the equipment once in a while. That's a novel idea.

I can't get over this. It's a gym... people sweat!!

This place is way to uppity for me, I'm out.

My wife works out at Sound Mind & Body Gym here in Fremont and loves it, I checked it out the other day and was impressed by the location (right on the water in Fremont), the friendly staff, and the free weights. I've never taken a class here, but the wife thinks the trainers do a great job with any skill level. Thinking about ditching Anytime Fitness close by to come work out here - better atmosphere.

Pros: Friendly, Fast

I got to the point where I would ignore the fact that the people who work there were super rude and snooty and the owner is a complete miserable hag. I joined this gym about a year ago because they had a steam room. The steam room was the deciding factor. Less than a week after I joined, the steam room broke down and was never fixed. They told me that they would be starting a big renovation soon so I should just be patient. So during the summer while I was waiting for the new and improved steam room, the membership coordinator and one of the personal trainers would bother me nonstop while I was at the gym and one of them got my phone number from the database and started to call me and text me incessantly to the point of stalking. When the renovations were finally finished, there was no new steam room, just a new sauna and I really don't like saunas. So I joined for the steam room and I only got to use it twice last April. A waste of a lot of money and an invasion of my confidential personal information.

June 14th, 2003: SMB Gym in Fremont shut down the last stretching room in the gym in order to use it to store it's junk equipment.

June 23rd, 2003: I submitted five comment cards from five different people suggesting that the room be cleared of equipment and reserved as a stretching room.

June 24th, 2003: I received a phone call from Victoria Aldrich a co-owner. She said the room will remain full of equipment and that members could either stretch in the Yoga room or in the hallway upstairs. Unfortunately the Yoga room always has classes during peak gym hours and the hallway is, uh... a hallway.

June 25th, 2003: the room had three more large pieces of equipment in it.

June 25th, 2003: I began a petition to have the room cleared of junk equipment and converted back into a stretching room.

June 25th, 2003: I am expelled from SMB for gathering Seventy three members signatures for The Member's Petition for a Stretching Room.

Co-owners Richard Harrington and Dennis Rose approached me before I had a chance to submit this petition.

Richard: "Is that a petition? Well,...it's not gonna happen!" Richard used the phrase "It's not gonna happen!" nine times in the course of a four minute conversation.

Richard: "I'll give you to the count of ten to either take a refund to your membership [at this gym] or stop your petition [to have a dedicated stretching room]."

I wanted to finish my work out so I told Richard what he wanted to hear. Ten minutes later I saw Victoria Aldrich in the gym and made an attempt at a rational and professional conversation concerning the voice of seventy-three of it's members.

Victoria: "You need to find something better to do with your time."

Victoria: "I don't want to have anything to do with you."

Victoria: "This is not a democracy"

Victoria: "Get your stuff and get out."

I just cancelled my membership and am kicking myself for the money I paid for the initiation fee. I can honestly say that the owner is the most miserable woman I have ever interacted with. She basically yelled at me when I mentioned how dirty the locker rooms were and I have heard her yelling at her staff in front of members. I am embarrassed I gave these people business. They dont care about how they treat their paying customers. Do yourself a favor and stay away. There are so many better gyms in town.

PS. A few of the spinning classes are good but the rest are average at best. Kickboxing is just an inexperienced girl jumping around. She has no formal training.

Sound Mind and Body is a fantastic facility with a prime location that overlooks the ship canal and is close to Fremont attractions. In addition to all the top-quality cardiovascular machines and weights, there is a spacious basketball court and nice locker rooms.

SMB is located in a nice spot on the ship canal in Fremont and has excellent views. The trainers available there are personable and very knowledgeable. Unfortunately, they have several staff members who are unfriendly and one owner who is quite rude. Given the relatively high cost of a membership there, good customer service should be included.

Being pregnant I had to freeze my account for 6 months. I wasn't told that I still would be charged a ''freeze" fee of $15 a month. Being on a freeze for medical reasons cost me more than canceling my membership and re-joining when capable of coming back!
I talked to the owner, Vicky, and she is just rude, unhelpful and not accommodating. She refuses any refund as I should have know by reading the website (while I talked to 3 different staff members and was NEVER told about any future charges!).
I will not recommend this place to anyone.

I mainly go to the yoga classes here, which I have found to be quite good. Yes, weekend classes can be crowded. Weekdays are rarely crowded, and the downstairs gym is often nearly empty at lunchtime. There is a good variety of equipment and weights, and it's clean and has nice daylight.

This place has the most unfriendly staff for such a beautiful place. There have been few if any occasions a front desk staff smiles or is at all friendly. Some of the trainers are so aloof that, if you get up the courage to ask a question, you walk away feeling inferior. There is a great view of the ship canal which is the only redeeming quality of the place. All of the yoga classes are full to the point you have to always be aware of where the person next to you is so you don't bump into them. The ski conditioning class ratio is about 50 members to two instructors who offer absolutely no support if you have any kind of injury. Finally, be sure to bring an ipod or something because they blast crappy music all through the club- even the locker room- so don't expect a peaceful sauna or steam... the bass is so loud it shakes the walls. Oh yeah, don't count on a parking spot in the evening- the lot is always full.

So I dont' really know what exactly to say other than the fact that they are unfriendly, rude, aloof, and generally unpleasant people. I had a "sponsored workout" from some chick that spent more time coming onto me than explaining the club to me... and then she told me a price that I thought actually a joke. Save your time and don't even come down... I'm headed over to greenlake, I hear a gym over there is under new ownership - more details to come

SM&B completely relies on its great facility to charge exorbitant fees and provide few services/amenities. The equipment for weight lifting is great, and the studios are lovely, but the classes are terrible and there is never anyone on the floor to help or answer questions. It seems that the class instructors pick up classes for extra cash in addition to their "real" jobs, and so are not invested in making the class a great experience for members. Also, complaints to the management fall on deaf ears. In short, if you only lift weights, this is a great place for you (though still overpriced compared to comparable gyms), but if you take classes or appreciate amenities (like towel service), you would be better served elsewhere. Also, the hours are very limited- the gym closes at 7 on weekends and on the early side on weekdays, too.

I really have to hand it to SMABG, they have setup a spectacular gym. From the moment you walk in you will feel the professionalism, with the front desk properly staffed and separated from the main workout areas to keep noise and distraction to a minimum. It only gets better from there.

The gym is definitely not a meat market and the layout and logistics are very well thought out. From the locker rooms, to the free weights section to the open courts and machines, everything is kept up-to-date and in good operating condition.

The space is lit with plenty of windows and natural light, it's ventilated well and it's a joy to work out here. I think that the prices are a little higher than the low-end gyms and much lower than the high-end gyms, so it's a perfect balance. Possibly the only negative is the hard-to-find parking, but hey, it's a gym, you're there to workout so just park a little farther away.

PROS: Great layout; clean; up-to-date machines; fairly prices
CONS: Parking a little tight

In this day and age of service, treating customers like cr*p is not a good way to build business and yet Sound Mind does not seem to get it. It's true they charge for towels at a hefty membership fee, and get this the towels you do get are tiny. And the new thing is you have to buy a year upfront or you can go on automatic pay option where they draw from your checking account. No thanks, I don't want to do either option. I will go elsewhere. Goodbye Sound Mind. (and I have been a client for many years).

For being such an expensive fascility, you would expect a friendly professional environment. But you'll see otherwise upon checking in. You'll be greeted by silent customer service people acting like airport customs. Try to join any of their programs and you'll be lucky if they call you back. They don't care if you're able to get in. But they're happy to charge you double the rates of a typical workout gym. And if you're coming during peak times, take the bus because their parking lot is very small. Their gym is supplied with worn out flat basketballs and the floor is rarely swept. You're better off going to a Rec Center. Lifting and exercise equiptment is acceptable but dated and some are worn.

This is a great gym, with a really soothing view.

Equipment is well maintained, clean and updated often. Good selection of free weights with small increments.

Trainers are great, although the management need customer service bootcamp!

I use the Fremont gym, and it's so NOT the standard gym scene -- just people serious about getting fit. It's clean, spacious, and the view and equipment can't be beat. I work out mid-morning so can't attest to evening crowds, but even on weekends have never had to wait for a machine. Pricey, yes, and they could use a pool/whirlpool, but well worth it.

I have used this gym on many occasions. I find the cardio set up inconvenient (lack of towels, no wipe down cleaner handy, not enough machines). Also, the locker room leaves a lot to be desired. The showers are dirt with ripped curtains that barely close... there is no hair dryers, lotion, spray deoderant, or other standard gym convenient features.
