The Scene
This is as unpretentious as it gets, and the workers and students of Capitol Hill who eat here--or take it out--like it that way. But don't be fooled by the standard-issue Chinese restaurant decor. These Asian favorites are as lively and colorful as the fish in the aquarium by the entrance.

The Food

From the rosy sate to the olive-green curry, eye-pleasing plates fill the tables and their size demands that they be shared. Selections vary from Vietnamese pho to Japanese teriyaki to Chinese chow mein. The tofu sate is a standout with its lightly fried tofu cubes swimming in a thick coconut broth. Chicken curry ordered medium-spicy provides perfect heat. Pad thai offers surprisingly tender shrimp, although the noodles are on the pasty side. Choose the main ingredient (chicken, beef, shrimp) for most dishes; when three come together in one dish--that's called "ballet."

Key Points

  • On Pike Between 9th-10th
  • Vietnamese Dishes, Pho
  • Chinese & Thai Too

The Inside Scoop

  1. When to Go - Lunch prices are the same as dinner prices--and bargains abound at both meals.

yum

by Jackie L.

I love this little hole in the wall in my neighborhood. granted - it can look a little shady from outside, they have the best curry mock chicken this side of the mississippi. They also have great pho - with lots of vegetarian options too. I especially like their fresh spring rolls, the tofu has a great flavor.

Real nice place

by richard98101

The people are real nice and service if perfect. I like the food my wife was not really sold but next time we go we will try something else.

We hope they do well and keep being a good asset to the neighborhood.

Pros: Good quality food

Cons: No drawback for my wife and I

A treasure on Capitol Hill

by Mike08

The most amazing curry I've ever had! You can't get anymore authentic than this! People were genuinely nice, service was quick and attentive, and the food, well if the curry was that delicious then I can't wait to try everything else! This restaurant will definitely be a highly recommended dining experience in my book.

Pros: People & Food

There are better places to eat.

by liz47

I ate their vermicelli bowl with mock chicken. The mock chicken was somehow bland and salty at the same time. It also looked dark and unappetizing. The noodles and vegetables were okay. The sauce was boring and served cold, which made the hot dish tepid. Also, I did not realize they were charging extra for choosing the mock chicken instead of the tofu. I would much rather eat at In the Bowl, which has many options and a good texturized soy protein chicken

Why go anywhere else when all you need is a quick BALLET fix'n..and when I say quick, I mean QUICK! Service and staff couldn't be anymore friendly and attentative but what will definitely bring me back is the spectacular tasting fresh delicious food! You can expect my lifetime business here because this is definitely one place thats left on the hill where you can't go wrong.

Cons: Closed on Sundays

Attentive waitstaff, QUICK service for weekday lunch

by original703

Ate lunch on a weekday afternoon. I ordered the tofu curry with vegetables. I asked for 1-star spiciness. The vegetables were cooked to perfection (not too soft, not too crunchy) but, overall, the meal tasted bland. There was nothing wrong with it--it just wasn't terrific.

It was neither the bargain that I expected nor all that pricey: $12.50 (excl. tax & tip) for curry tofu and a domestic beer.

Pros: Quick service, attentive waitstaff

Cons: Meals not as big as other reviewers asserted

Fantastic Everything!

by stacykn

Absolutely CRAZY about this place. After hearing so many praises and "you have to try ballet" I decided to make a quick stop in for lunch. Not only was the service quick, attentive, and friendly but the the food was also tasteful and very very fulfilling. One thing was for sure, there was not one inch of blandness in my dishes, you definitely have to come for their delicious curry, and homemade pho (vegetarian or beef). I ejoyed it so much I came back for dinner that same day, with some friends! One things for sure this is one place I wont stop dining at, not even for the ave

Meh.

by waistfire

While I've walked by Ballet many times before, the dingy storefront kept me from ever walking in. After seeing the shining reviews on Citysearch, my boyfriend and I thought that we'd give it a try. On a positive note, the inside is actually a lot nicer than the outside would suggest. The food, however, is not. My spring roll was limp but oh kay. Both my boyfriend's shrimp fried rice and my cashew chicken stirfry were painfully bland. I slowly chopsticked food in my mouth and intermittently peeked at the dying fish in the fish tank get beat around by the other fish. When the bill came, we felt pretty screwed. Any asian restaurant on University Ave costs the same but tastes much better.

Basically perfect

by uptownmatt

Ballet is perhaps the greatest restaurant in Seattle on a quality to dollar ratio. Great for vegetarians and carnivours alike, and every item tried by anyone I know has not been anything less than spectacular. The service is quick, attentive, and friendly. The prices are almost jaw-droppingly low.

Pros: Great food for meat eaters and veggies, at a low price

Cons: Not open on Sunday (can't get enough)

Excellent vegetarian options.

by maozed

Although it doesn't look like much, this place is delicious. My boyfriend and I tried the faux beef pho and some kind of curry soup. Both were amazing - some of the best soups I've ever had. This place is good for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike, and it's also ridiculously cheap. I'm planning to go back soon.

Pros: Soups, Veggie options

Cons: Decor

The Best in Seattle

by stephngu

This restaurant is THE place to go for cheap eats!! The food is awesome, service is fast and friendly and prices are so reasonable. No secret on Capitol Hill, this place is usually crowded but it is worth trying out.

Great food, nice folks

by granthor

GREAT food at incredible prices! The waitstaff is very friendly, too. The one thing the Ballet does NOT have is any kind of ambience. But with great Pho like you can get here, who gives a damn! Bring a book or a friend, and the decor won't matter as much.

Pros: good food, inexpensive, good wait staff

Cons: no ambiance

Tasty treats!

by luvsroosters2

Ballet is the best food on Capitol Hill!
Try the tofu curry w/veggies #17, veggie Pho
or spring rolls with tofu. Great food for meat eaters and veggies alike at a great price.

Pros: Inexpensive, Tasty, good selection

Fantastic cheap food

by arielmeadow

The ambiance stinks, but who cares? The food is so good, so fast, and so tasty, that I'm willing to overlook the cheap tables, dingey lighting, and wood paneling. Lots of yummy dishes for vegetarians, and a salad dressing to die for. Tasty, cheap, and super friendly service.

Pros: Inexpensive, Quality food, Vegetarian meals

Cons: Dingey ambiance
