Message from Rob Roy

A Wednesday night in October of 2008, the Viceroy was celebrating 5 years of great cocktails & conversation. People roamed around remembering all the great Viceroy moments throughout the years. Something magic was in the air...something was about to change forever. Amongst the patrons sat a few of the owners. Since the Viceroy always had that certain sophisticated-jet setter feel, the owners decided to keep it classy & order a scotch cocktail. Whatever the case, on that electric Wednesday night a round of Rob Roys was served & something happened. The next day Viceroy owner Linda Derschang shot out of bed, she had a vision in her sleep. "Same booze, same bar, new name!" The delicious Rob Roy she consumed the night before had left a lasting impression. And so my friends the Viceroy name was gone & in its place a tribute to classic cocktails around the world-the Rob Roy was born!

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Seductively lit, upholstered in leather (or a close facsimile), and handsomely stocked with Dom Perignon and other more affordable top-shelf pours, the Rob Roy has class, or at least some retro, Rat Pack version of it. Hordes of well-dressed professionals head here straight from the office; hipsters--lured in no small part by the fact that the bar is in the heart of Belltown's club row--dominate as the night wears on.

The Draw
Seattle is low on spots to see and be seen, a void filled with haughty assurance by the Rob Roy. Martini glasses are infinitely more elegant than beer mugs, and the bar menu reflects this opinion. Fittingly, the cocktails are generally very well poured. Servers can sometimes be slow, but they're also a professional and attractive bunch. Except for bowls of Goldfish crackers, food is not part of the equation.

Key Points

  • Same Bar, Same Booze, New Name
  • Classic Cocktails
  • Sophisticated Ambiance

The Inside Scoop

  1. When to Go - Certain nights feature live DJ's as well as private events--call ahead for more information.
  2. Know Before You Go - Numerous dining options are within walking distance, including close neighbors Marrakesh, Marjorie and Shiro.

Swanky Belltown Lounge

by Ariel S. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,241

Though the drinks tend to be a bit pricey, this tiny lounge in belltown is a great place to retire to after dining in belltown. It can sometimes be difficult to secure a table. But the bar is a fun place to hang out and the bartenders are friendly. The usual caveat about parking in belltown applies. I prefer the 2nd avenue selection of bars/lounges better than the overplayed first avenue ones.

CHECK BANK ACCOUNT AFTER YOU LEAVE!

by lsbk

CHECK BANK ACCOUNT AFTER YOU LEAVE!! I made the mistake of using my card here and when I checked my statement online a couple of days later I saw that the bartender had given himself a little tip that I didn't authorize. He also did this to my friend who used her card that night as well. The bartender was beyond rude and after ordering a drink he just rolled his eyes and said "no" and then actually had the audacity to snap at me when I didn't order my drink when my friend was ordering hers. I thought I was being polite and patiently waiting until he was done with her order to give him mine. After he treated us so horribly my friend and I both decided not to tip. This was a big deal for us since we both have worked in the service industry and have never not tipped before but I couldn't stomach the thought of even giving this guy a dollar, especially after I had tipped him earlier in the evening for another drink he had made me. I have been calling Rob Roy repeatedly asking for the manager and leaving messages and have been getting blown off; my friend did get a hold of the manager and he just asked her some info and apparently didn't even seem concerned and didn't even apologize. I would think your employees STEALING from customers might be of some concern, but who knows..this probably happens here all the time and maybe they are hoping most people won't notice. I can understand not having the best night at work and not being terribly friendly to customers but I absolutely cannot understand STEALING FROM CUSTOMERS!

Pros: every "pro" went out the window after one big "con"

Cons: employees stealing from customers

Why change something that works?

by SkySurfer

I've been going to Rob Roy (Viceroy) from time to time for the last couple of years. I don't mind change, as long as its for the better.

I asked them why they changed the name and the decor. The reason: because they wanted to be a more upscale place. What was wrong with the not-so-upscale?

Not quite sure how going for Van Gogh (old painting) to psychedelic helps that much. They also moved from being a relaxed, fun, lets hang out kind of place to a more serious, lets get in and get out kind of place.

I still think it's one of the better places in Belltown, I just find it unfortunate the vibe changed for the worse.

Pros: Cheap Drinks, DJ

Cons: Awkward layout

Viceroy, New and Improved???

by caveman986

I've been a Viceroy regular for almost 2 years now and until recently enjoyed almost everything about this bar....Sleek, swanky decor, awesome friendly staff, unique drink menu...Lately, I'm not so sure. First the decor took a turn for the worst - Not sure what's up with all the tacky psychadellic artwork, but it really is hideous...then some of the best bar/waitstaff in town disappeared. Sadly, between the changes in ambience and recent employee turn-over, Viceroy just isn't the same place it used to be. I think time to find a new happy hour hangout : (

Was Great, now I'm not so sure.

by DrJonathanKatz

I've been a semi-regular to this bar since they opened almost 5 years ago. I even reserved the place 2 years ago for my 30th B-day party and it was awesome! The staff is great, The drinks are great, and a atmosphere USED to be great.
Now I'm not sure if I can bring dates or even friends here anymore. Why the remodel??? What's up with the sh!tty 80's black light hippy art? I loved the whole sleek dark James Bond style. Now it's just some stoner's cheap poster collection. I'll miss you viceroy.

Pros: Staff, Drinks

Cons: Bad Remodel

We need to talk

by laurenwinter

Viceroy, I like you a lot and I know a bit of change from time to time keeps things fresh...but, how do I say this...your new artwork hates eyes, *my* eyes at least. You do not have gallery white walls, Viceroy, nor to you have primary colored lucite chairs or chandeliers made of paperclips or chenille covered beanbags, so why the Op Art? Viceroy, you are this chess den in the country house of that creepy Franco-Russian playwright type of sultry...Just be yourself; everyone wants to get with you.

Also, when you wear your tables all high on one side like that and couches all low on the other, it makes you look a little lopsided. It had to be said.

The Viceroy...Where Everybody Knows Your Name

by foodanddrink2007

Remember the show Cheers? The bar where everybody knew your name? Viceroy appears to be the Seattle incarnation...A fun, friendly bar that appears to draw lots of regulars. Sitting at the bar and sipping a drink while waiting for a friend to join me, I was impressed by how many times the staff actually greeted customers by name. I can see why people would keep coming back...the service is friendly, seating is comfortable, and the drinks are tasty. Try their cucumber cocktail...refreshing. Viceroy has the right idea...

Pros: Service, Unique cocktails

Cons: Parking

Sexiest Bartender Ever!

by waterproofed

Amy German is without a doubt the sexiest bartender alive today.
She looks great, is utterly charming, serves the punters promptly with a smile and just oozes sexiness.
I'm from London and met Amy a mere twice in The West End, Roatan, Honduras, in '99. So what do I know?
Well, I know for one thing that I'd not hesitate to visit this here bar for a dose of possibly the coolest vibration around were I ever in Seattle. Yet if Amy wasn't there, I'd be gutted.
You, my friend, should check it out.
All the best Amy,
Joel

Pros: Amy German

why bother writing a review when 20 are already written?

by dinner_and_drinks

let me start by saying i'm one of the few who don't like linda's other bars. "lindas" on capitol hill and "king's hardware" are too easily a place for children to join forces in the army of drunken weekend displays of intentional retardation of the social skills.

how then, did she come up with such a refined atmosphere with elegant furnishings and an exceptional selection of fine beverages, find a couple of really great bartenders, and put it all together in a great location?

who knows... but i adore this bar. go there for happy hour, have a few then find something to eat at any of the great restaurants within sight of the viceroy's front door. then go back to the viceroy and enjoy the week night scene, if you get too drunk, or find a one-night-stand buddy, ask your bartender how to get to the ace hotel.

Pros: very good spot for a date, or a whole party.

Cons: can get too crowded.

Great Sunday Lounge Spot

by livbeck

I've been going to the Viceroy on Sunday nights the past few weeks and I'm loving it. Unlike Fridays and Saturdays, Sundays have the relaxed lounge feel the Viceroy is so great at. The DJ is amazing--I love the blend of classic funk and soul and modern rap. James (the bartender) definitely knows how to pour. I highly recommend it for your weekend windown.

Pros: Ambience, Live Music, Great Drinks, Happening Crowd

Pros and Con

by risby

So many things about this place are so right....warm, intimate ambience, attentive service, tasty cocktails.... the Viceroy would be the perfect spot to gather for an evening of drinks and good conversation...unfortunately the LOUD music makes this more than a little difficult. My friends and I stopped by on a Wednesday night. The DJ was playing fun music but it was so loud that we were forced to yell to maintain conversation. The Viceroy has a great lounge-like ambience, but the blaring music seems a contradiction to the whole "lounge" concept....

Pros: ambience, service

Cons: loud music, parking

Typical Seattle Nightspot

by jellomonkey

Okay, Viceroy has decent drinks, the atmosphere is cozy and inviting, but I have to say it's a typical Seattle nightspot. My wife and I went here after Sushi as Shiro's for a drink on a Friday night and Viceroy was filled to capacity with seriously ugly people. And by ugly, I mean women that might have been attractive but were wearing flannel, big loose jeans, stocking caps, etc. etc. Seattle is the only city in the U.S. where women think dressing up to go out for cocktails is a cotton hoodie and Converse All-Stars. Ugh. See and be seen? Only if you want to see skids and lumberjacks.

Pros: Cute waitresses

Cons: Attracts the flannel and Doc Martens crowd

Check it out!

by jyaros

A little loud, but otherwise a great time. I heard good things about this spot and checked it out for the first time last Saturday with some friends. Great drinks, cool furniture, and our waitress was awesome. Just an all around good vibe.

Great scene

by kellyann73

I loved this place. It was really romantic with comfy leather benches to cuddle on, dim lighting, and funky decor. Our waitress was really fun and dedicated to making our experience pleasant. The only problem was they didn't have the liquor for the first couple of drinks I ordered, so no fun drinks : ( however the drink i did end up ordering was amazing. I loved the cute little cups of goldfish set out on the tables.

Pros: service, ambiance, music

Cons: limited drink variety

Love Love Love this place!!!

by asophia

My co-workers and I have become Friday evening happy hour regulars and love this spot! Although the vibe changes markedly after 10pm when a DJ usually begins spinning for the night, happy hour here is perfect for winding down and taking the edge off. Comfy couches, coffee tables....it's like sitting in someone's chicly decorated living room. The service is warm, fun, and friendly. We adore our usual cocktail server and have always had pleasant service when seated at the bar. Great vibe, great staff, great drinks......can't think of a better spot for happy hour cocktails.

Pros: Great Service, Great $3 happy hour well drinks

Cons: limited food menu

Best Nightlife in Belltown

by mkcutie

A girlfriend introduced me to the Viceroy the other night, and I am a new believer that good nightlife still exists in Belltown!! Unlike the cheesed out bar scene that seems so present down on First ave., Viceroy is a nice getaway. The lounge is comfortable and open, encouraging social activity with a young attractive crowd and good music to boot. Our bartender James was charming and friendly, making us feel right at home. I'll definitely be back next week with a few more of my girls to share this little jem in the heart of Seattle... I only hope we can grab a couch!

Pros: ambience, service, great overall atmosphere

Blind Date

by perttybirdy

I'm not one for getting fixed up, but I decided to take a chance. I was nervous and didn't want to go somewhere too big and overwhelming, or a place too small and romantic (just in case he was a snore!) One of his co-workers recommended the Viceroy. When I walked in through the large Bank looking door, I was already impressed by the warm cozy atmosphere. There was a DJ setting up for a night they have there. My date was waiting for me at the bar with a Martini. I'm not much of a drinker so I was a little nervous about ordering. The Bartender was very helpful and suggested The Bergdorf. It was a refreshing, not too sweet, Vodka Martini. The place eventually filled with a young hip crowd. The music was fun and lively. I really liked my date and the spot! I was pleasantly suprised.

Pros: Romantic, Not Cheesy, Good Drinks

Not bad, could be better

by magnoliavillage

For a Belltown club, it's one of the better ones. When it first opened the music wasn't too loud and you could actually enjoy your drinks and have a conversation without having to shout. The last few times I was there, the music was far too loud to enjoy much of anything.

The wait staff has been very good (someone mentioned Amy by name and I think she's good as well). The bar area and stone walls are very retro 60's and the furniture layout is conducive to relaxing and hanging out with your friends.

Thumbs up for doing something different, thumbs down for the volume.

Pros: great layout, great furniture

Cons: too loud

Unpretentious and soothing

I love this lounge. The leather couches are comfy, drinks are delicious, and the staff is superb. Went Saturday night and the DJ was fun. Plenty of pretty people to look at and not a pick-up-joint feeling. The atmosphere is very hip. Go check it out.

Pros: Cosmos, Nice staff, Ambiance

above the 1st avenue madness

by vieenrose

I know its been open for more than a year, but somehow I just discovered theViceroy. Its quickly becoming my favorite spot. Went there with friends the last 2 weekends love the ambiance & good mix of people. Crowded, yes, but in a sexy way. NOT (thank god) the crazy 1st Avenue Belltown scene no horny/get wasted/meat-market vibe & very cool waitstaff as well. Gonna get there earlier next Sat and stake out the sofas for our own!

Pros: Swanky, Good drinks, Hotties (inc. staff!)

Cons: Belltown parking! !

Pretty people?!?

by jcdnsd

Where have all the pretty people gone?!? I went with a group of girlfriends on a Friday night, around 10:30 p.m., and the only cute people that were there were the darling, waif-ish waitresses and a couple of gals that had obviously been hired for the night. Meow.

Viceroy IS a fun place to hang-out for awhile b/c the decor is pretty fun & funky -- especially if you get a seat in the "den." But it does get old quickly if the music is bad and the smoke starts getting to you.

Pros: Great waitresses, Funky, dark den feel, Couches

Cons: Hit-or-miss music, smokey, crowded- in a bad way

Love the place. Pretty boys and pretty girls. "not your average Belltown club". $20.00 will get you five drinks at happy hour with a $5.00 tip included. Amy, one of the bartenders will make you feel loved even before you get drunk. She is one of the best bartender's in Seattle.

Love the Decor!

by erin26138

I love everything about this place.. . .service, decor, drinks. . .
The place is very rich and plush, and make you feel like you are in a 70's basement drinking at your dads bar. There are comfy couches to sit with a date or a group of friends. This place does get crowded on the weekend, though.

Pros: atmopshere, decor, service

A little bit of everything!

by joontang

I went to Viceroy last Wednesday night, and let me tell you it was funtastic. There were a couple of DJs playing Funk and Hip Hop, people dancing, and plenty of cute boys and girls to look at. It seemed Seattles nightlife had shrunk down and was going off inside of the darling, yet stylishly sexy, Belltown bar. The bartenders were fast and friendly, or if you want to keep your spot on one of the lush couches, the cocktail servers come right to you. I've also been to the Viceroy on a more mellow night. It's an intimate place to take a date or just have a conversation without having to yell over loud music. Depending on your mood Viceroy covers it all.

Pros: Classy, Nice Bathrooms, Hip

Cons: , Can get crowded, Pricey

Bridge crowd in Belltown

by littledminor

The light is lovely in the bar, but like Ballard, seemed to be a girl-free zone. Drinks were standard, but I agree about the acid-jazz...how about a little deep house and a few more places to sit. If you're looking for the bridge crowd, Viceroy is your place.

Pros: candlelit, initimate, good bartenders

Cons: , gender-imbalance, see: girl-free

If you do not mind a slightly crowded bar, Viceroy offers an innovative and classy atmosphere. The wait staff and door attendant were incredibly friendly and the bar offers top-shelf cocktails.
