5 Stars: Fantastic and Romantic Italian (by MsJan)

You must go on a Tuesday night for the piano player. Be sure to sit close and the piano sound is beautiful. The food was wonderful. Homemade Bread for dipping and OMG, you have to try the bread pudding! We will go back.
Even the server was fantastic!!

2 Stars: Mamma Melina Ristorante is not what it used to be (by Frank M.)

This used to be an excellent place to eat, but, unfortunately, the food is more compareable to frozen and reheated cuisine these days. The wait staff is so-so. The manager is a nice guy and does his best, but the family that owns it has simply neglected their formerly great menu and standards for food. I'm sad as I have many friends who used to frequent this little place with me, but now I will probably not return unless the family does.

3 Stars: Good Food (by ACMilan21)

The food was pretty decent, AMAZING tiramisu. I loved the live music, but given the space is so small people were talking so loud you could barely hear the amazing voice of the gentleman singing. We celebrated a birthday there, a guy sang happy birthday in Italian while playing an accordian, very nice!

5 Stars: Unique, Cozy and Tons of Fun (by D Mann)

Been coming here for years, and I can honestly say there is no place like it in Seattle. Sure, its not ultra modern, clean and slick, but thats what makes it special. Its old world Italian style, and very charming. Close your eyes while "O Sole Mio" is playing, and you're whisked away to a small Italian villa. The staff is very attentive, and make you feel right at home. Everyone helps to make sure you have everything you need. Its a great atmosphere!!

The food comes in good portions, perfect for finishing off your hunger pains, and the bread is ridiculously addictive. Nowhere else will you find fresh baked breadsticks, and they are goooooooood! Great fresh fish with prawns, roasted veggies and risotto. Meat sauce way better than your mom used to make. Even just a simple marinara has such great flavors there. This is why Italians eat so much at dinner. Cuz its DAM GOOD!

Tuesday is the day to go, with half priced bottles of wine, Brian playing piano, and its not incredibly crowded. If you go on the weekend, make reservations, or you will surely find yourself waiting by the door, with hosts, bussers and servers trying to worm their way past you (been there, done that).

But don't let that stop you. Just go and visit Mamma Melina, bring your voracious appetite and enjoy!

2 Stars: Really disappointed (by qweeny)

Well, I am so bummed that this restaurant did not live up to it's reputation here on Citysearch. I have been so excited to try this place and when my husband and I finally had the chance to go on a date we went here. First of all, it isn't really "quaint". It's kind of a old and dumpy. People say it's romantic but I found it to be so noisy we could hardly talk to each other. Also, our server was borderline rude to us which I really hate. She told us a couple of specials but I guess my husband hadn't really heard and so he asked if they ever have lasagna. She said; "didn't I already tell you the specials?" (Yea! she really said that). There was nobody playing piano and the atmosphere was tense right from the moment we came in. We had the chicken marsala and it was just so so. Also, the pasta it came with had a very tangy, vinegary taste that I wasn't particularly fond of. I was really looking forward to coming here because of all the great reviews. I did see one not nice review but I thought maybe it was just an off night since there were so many wonderful reviews. Unfortunately for us, this past Thursday was also a bad night there. Hmmmm could this be a trend. I'll never know because I will spend my money elsewhere next time. :(

Food is ok. We did not find it too special. Just ordinary. What I did not like the most was the service. The host was very rude and did not seat us promptly.
5 Stars: Phenomenal Food, Great Service (by ChrisSampson)

You might miss it when you drive by, but when you enter, the atmosphere is pleasant and the air is filled with the smells of Italian food. I've tried numerous dishes, and they were all amazing. Among my favorites is their dessert called Tortino. An amazing bread pudding (and I'm not a fan of bread pudding) with apples and cranberries, served hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream resting in a sauce that has a touch of rum in it. The servers are all polite and very attentive. The food is spectacular. Weekends include a piano player that comes in and plays as you dine. Sinatra while eating Italian works very well for me. This is truly one of Seattle's best kept secrets. If you love Italian food, you simply must give Mamma Melina Ristorante a try. It is my absolute favorite place to eat and has been for over a year. Well worth the visit.

5 Stars: Best Restaurant in the U-District (by SarahKate)

My husband and I have been to Mamma Melina twice, and both times have been impressed with the quality of food and service. I'm a poor graduate student, so we usually go for the better inexpensive places around the U (Agua Verde, Veggie Veggie), but Mamma Melina is worth splurging. Our tab came to just over $90--that includes two appetizer Caesar salads (excellent!) two main dishes (a just-right ravioli in rose sauce and the chicken marsala with delicious, flavorful veggies and a side of pasta with fettuccine sauce), a bottle of wine, a giant piece of tiramisu to share (the second-best tiramisu I've tasted in my life), and the tip. The service was great--our waiter was attentive without hovering--and even though we were seated directly by the piano player, the restaurant never got so loud that we couldn't hear each other. The pianist played and sang a number of Italian arias and then came around to ask if we had any requests. Somebody must have requested "Bohemian Rhapsody," which he gamely played and sang, amazingly coming off as charming rather than obnoxious. Overall, the food, atmosphere and service are absolutely top-notch. Highly recommended.

5 Stars: Great Food, Great Service (by QAHiller)

We visited Mamma Melina's this past Saturday evening. The restaurant was busy, with an animated atmosphere. We were greeted at the door, and seated promptly on time for our reservation. Our server, August, was attentive and friendly and provided some great menu recommendations. The risotto and the veal marsal were both great. Our dinner was accompanied by some entertaining music from the piano, including offers to play requests. We never felt rushed during dinner. We left more than satisfied with our meal - the restaurant provided a great mix of quality, service, and value. We'll certainly be back.

5 Stars: Best meal out in years! (by greta1)

My mother, grandmother, and I went here for dinner and were blown away by how fantastic our experience was. The food was delicious and generous-- all of us LOVED our meals, down to the salads and bread served prior the meal. Our wine was AMAZING; the service was attentive without being clingy, and we were warmly attended to by the maitre d' as well. The ambiance was likewise fantastic; it was bustling but not overly noisy, and the interior is warm, light, and lovely-- I saw many couples there as well. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, a darling man started playing piano and singing. Beautiful! We left feeling high on life. Plus, it's family run and locally owned. GO!

5 Stars: I love Mamma Melina (by jennybabes)

I too was surprised to see some negative reviews on Mamma Melina, but then, there are people out there who truly don't know good food when they have it.

I go atleast once a month, more if I'm lucky, and the staff there always greets me with a smile, and treats me like I'm family. I usually go during lunch, but have been there for dinner as well.

Their lunch menu has many choices, and I've tried almost everything on it, but I usually go back to the pollo parmigana, as it is my favorite.

Really, what more could you ask for. The food is great (I haven't found better Italian in Seattle), and the staff is very attentive and personable. I think that if you find a place in Seattle that has great food, AND excellent customer service, then you've found yourself a winner.

There's not too many places in Seattle where you get all those qualities, unfortunately.

1 Stars: How Horrible Can You Get? (by PublicO)

We moved to Seattle and we were excited to try one of the city's "best restaurants." The calamari was disgusting and the main courses were no better than the pasta made around the block in every college dorm room. Before you discount the post as being from an "out of towner" you should know that I am happy with a good burger all the way to 5-star cuisine - this place should be out of business. Shame on the patrons for keeping such a horrible place going for WAY too long.

5 Stars: Excellent Restaurant! (by bretcarve)

I was very surprised to find such a great restaurant in The U.district, but after reading the family history i knew i was in for a treat.
My wife made reservation for saturday night at 7.30 and when we arrived the host showed us to our table immediately and told us that our server would come right over to tell us about the specials, wich included the Fantastic Fresh Alaskan Halibut that both me and my wife had for dinner.
The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked, and came beautifully presented on top of a lentil and spinach stew, with 2 grilled jumbo prawns placed on top and fresh asparagus and roasted carrots ( 19.95 ). We also found the wine list to be of great value with many wines priced in the $ 20-$30 range, our Pinot Grigio was $24.
to finish our meal we tried the very good and different Bread Pudding, wich it was filled with delicious apples and cranberries.
I must Return to this Great Italian spot before Halibut season is over just to taste once again the best fish i have ever had in my life! ( hard to believe that Mamma Melina can turn out Halibut better than some of the high end downtown restaurant charging a fraction of the price )

3 Stars: unimpressed (by JRR)

I went to Mamma melina's last night cause my girlfriend and her friend really enjoy it. Personally I thought it as rather sub par for all the hype it recieved on City Search. First off the atmosphere is nice, there were only a few other tables and the service was good. However I don't want to listen to 70's cover bands while dinning at a supposedly traditional italian restaurant. Wine list was ok though I think calling a Cabernet a "Full bodied wine" is pushing it severly. Have you not had anything other than the few styles of wine you serve???

Food came out in good timing, I had the Scampi al vino, unfortunatly for me I paid 17.50 for a cold dish. I'm not sure how when the kitchen is so close that my dish actually came out cold. More so the plate set up was rather boring, as was the blan taste of the vegetables, pasta was cold with a tomato sauce that had little if any flavor. The Scampi, I've worked in this industry for a while, and spent a good time at some top notch seafood places so i've had some amazing scampi, but last nights was anything but. Cold, rather blan, the tails were dang near impossible to get off cause the were sitting in butter. I was afraid one would launch from my hand and at my girlfriend.

On the upside they pour a three ounce pour for scotch and the tiremisu was rather tasty. I have to say, I would be suprised if I go back to dine

5 Stars: Loved it!! (by maxturn)

After reading the reviews about Mamma Melinas we decided to make a reservation and find for ourself if this place was good or not.
When we arrived (4 in our party) we were seated on a nice round table and the host made sure to let us know that they had been in the same location for over 19 years and were running a special 3 course menu for only $19.90, wich he explained that it was the year 1990 that the restaurant opend that was why the $19.90.
everything my party ordered was tasty and fresh, especially the Cozze alla Diavola wich i loved and the Bruschetta Al Pomodoro. We also ordered a wonderful and very affordable pinot grigio $24 and the waitress Lauren made sure to check back with us just at the right time without beeing too intrusive.
I am glad that we found a new favorite italian restaurant , we'll be sure to bring our family and friends for any dining occasion!

1 Stars: Unbelieveably bad (by seafudie)

I had my first experience with Mama Melina last night, and was sadly disappointed. There were four of us in our party, and only one felt their meal was mediocre at best. We were excited by the fact that therestaurant had been named Citysearch Best Italian Food 2005, and had frankly expected much more than we received. Obviously something has happened in the last four years... no one in my party could figure out why this honor was bestowed.

It was a busy Sunday evening... the majority of tables were occupied when we arrived for our 6:30p reservation. The curt and cold "host" showed us to our table, which was sandwiched in a row of four-tops, with only several inches of clearance between them. We each ordered something different... I had the Risotto di Parma ($15.50), the other dishes ordered were the Gnocchi di patate ($13.50), Rigatoni di Sorrento ($12.95) and the Scampi al Vino ($17.95). Unfortunately the best thing we ordered was the wine... hard to ruin as it does not pass through the kitchen on its way to the table. The risotto was wholly unremarkable and tasted like it came out of a box, over-salted and boring with a sausage planted firmly on top, which was also flavorless. The gnocchi itself was actually not too terribly bad, if it weren't for the bland sauce it was dressed with... tasted like Chef Boyardee. The scampi and rigatoni were marginal at best. When our attentive server (up to this point, the only shining moment of the evening aside from the wine) came to clear our plates... she noticed that I hadn't eaten any of my meal and asked if everything was okay. I told her that I really didn't like it at all.. without going into detail assuming she would ask me, apologize, let me know she would inform the manager etc..... nothing, not a word... she just continued to clear the table then came back with dessert menus... wow.

The other major disappointment: Husband of owner is billed as an opera singer, yet all I heard last night were 70's cover songs.

4 Stars: Excellent deal on quality Italian lunch (by gidons)

We came in for a Saturday lunch, and the place was nearly empty, which got me a bit worried - unjustly, as it turns out. The service was polite, friendly, and pretty fast, and the decor is pleasant enough though nothing special.

We ordered a bruschetta to start, which came heaped with fresh chopped tomatoes and a bit of funky but yummy parmesan, and drizzled with some nice olive oil.

We ordered two entrees, with side salad and soup, which came first. The soup ($1.95 extra) - lentil with sausage - was tasty and hot, though too salty. The salad was simple fresh greens, with a surprisingly mild but tasty balsamic vinaigrette (many restaurants make it either too acidic or too sweet.)

The chicken-prosciutto panini ($8.95) was good, but not remarkable - I guess that would be really too much to expect from a panini, though. The linguine alla vongole ($8.95, with clams, white wine, garlic, cherry tomatoes) was very good, with no fishy taste and a lot of garlic and clam flavor. The pasta itself was done perfectly al-dente.

We finished our meal with espresso (Umbria) which was flavorful and well done. The check was $35 including tax, which for the meal we had is a steal.

I will definitely come back, and concentrate on the pasta next time.

5 Stars: Wonderful dining experience (by redmondreynolds)

My husband and I wandered in to Mamma Melina's the other night and found the atmosphere warm and welcoming. It was a typical drizzly Seattle night and we appreciated the warmth. The wine selection was large enough to offer us excellent suggestions but small enough to not overwhelm us. The service was wonderful as was our dinner. We started off with Calamari, I had the Ravioli and my husband had the Salmon. Both were excellent.
We will return to Mamma Melina and will recommend this restaurant to family and friends!

4 Stars: Delicious Italian Food....Small space (by todda)

The italian food here is absoutely incredible. The sauces they create have a very distinct taste. This is a very cozy retaurant and the wait on the weekends can be very long. Many patrons simply like to sit around and sip wine after dinner. The piano is a little loud so it is hard to conversate. MAKE SURE TO GET RESERVATIONS. You will be standing in a cramped lobby if not.

4 Stars: Hip and seems like a little visit to Italy (by Lori S.)

I love the ambiance of this place; the candlelight, the paintings of Sorrento and other Italian cities on the wall. The food is very good and the wine, as well.
5 Stars: Beautiful restaurant! (by streetcardesire)

I've been there twice now with my husband-once when we were just dating and then, again, the other night on our first wedding anniversary.

it has been consistent. they have delicious food. they do have options for vegetarians and are just as good as the ones for the meat-eaters! wonderful wine. and such a beautiful, romantic atmosphere. you can dress up or go in jeans and it's no problem. we had ONE waitress who seemed a bit robotic. but the other staff were very friendly. and she was too, really, but needs to loosen up, perhaps? i don't know! it's not important! the important thing is that it was a lovely way to celebrate our first year of marriage! and sumone ice cream for dessert! :)

5 Stars: Another great night at Mamma Melina (by Seatown)

Took my sister, visiting from out of town here last Tuesday. She was craving Italian, and from my last experience here, It was the place I had to take her. We were greeted by a friendly host, whom escorted us to our table promptly, even though they had almost a fool house. He then informed us that it was half price wine night, so being winos, we had to take advantage of that. The service was warm as was the general vibe of the whole place. My sister got a kick out of the piano man whom came to our table on occasion for requests. We shared what my girlfriend and I had ordered last time which was penne pasta tossed in tomato sauce with smoked mozzarella, and roasted eggplant. And then my personal favorite, Pollo Marsala. Finished with bread pudding which was amazing!!! The place really lived up to all of my hype to my sister, which was a relief, cause she's a tough pleaser sometimes. We'll be back

4 Stars: Great value, yummy dishes (by mcbare)

Given the low menu prices, I'm always expecting the food to be mediocre at best. Instead, it's flavorful with good texture and I always leave wanting more. Last time we went, we were seated next to a famous local Seattle glass artist. Not a place I'd think of for celebrity-watching - I considered it a testament to how good Melina's food is!

3 Stars: Not as good as Expected (by sandracoons)

My daughter and I decided to try this restaurant Monday night. The service was good, but the food was a disappointment. I ordered the baked rigitoni with meatballs, the "gravy" was unbelievably salty and the meatballs were obviously frozen. I didn't understand the frozen meatballs being served in an Italian restaurant. On a good note, my daughters fish was good.
I wouldn't return - this to me was a disappointment in "real" Italian food.

5 Stars: one of the best italian restaurants i have ever been to! (by Daners00)

my boyfriend and i came to seattle to see the sites and eat the food. this restaurant made the entire trip well worth it! we showed up sorta late, around 9. got beautiful seatting. first thing i noticed about the restaurant was the environment was really comfortable. sometimes i get too uncomfortable with candle lit dinners but this was really cozy. we got our food right as the restaurant was closing and we were the last ones there. this made me feel bad, but the managed was really cool about it. he kept the music going and the wine comin. i LOVE the fettichini! i couldnt get enough. the dessert was insane! the wine list was brilliant. we would up staying until WAY after they closed BSing with the manager about music and wine. we had such a great time, we came back the next night. this really was a restaurant to remember. please go!

5 Stars: Great Italian food! (by The_Big_Ragu)

I was with a group of four people. We went last Friday (definitely need reservations for a Friday/Saturday). We were seated quickly. The waitress brought a hot basket of a homemade bread that was exceptional. We all ordered drinks. I tasted both the house cabernet and called Avalon (I think?). Don't order the house cabernet. I ordered the Caesar which was good, pretty much what I expected. Caesar salads seem to be that way, you only remember when they bad or exceptional. I then ordered the spaghetti with Italian sausage (yeah I know, no imagination), anyway it was great. The noodles were handmade(?) and very hearty and the sausage was flavorful without be greasy or heavy. My wife ordered the gnocchi which was very good, probably handmade too. My friends ordered the salmon with bow-tie pasta and a penne pasta. The salmon pasta dish was very well done. The salmon was good but not overpowering (which salmon can be in a 'light dish'). The penne was good too although a bit on the 'trendy side' and I didn't like it as much.

We ordered thre desserts; NY cheesecake (it was on the fluffy side but very flavorful), Tiramisu (could have used a little more flavor but I would still recommend it) and a chocolate soffle/torte which was very good and not too dense (I'm not sure how they made it so fast?).

The service was quick and efficient and very friendly. They had a piano player that came around and asked for requests.

The whole experiance was very nice and I would definitely recommend it.

4 Stars: Good food, nice atmosphere (by gdmk)

Nice Italian in the U district, the place is nothing fancy, but is warm and welcoming, and we were there on a Friday when there is live music. The service was very friendly, although I didn't appreciate much the fact that they brought us the check while we were still working on our desserts and coffees. We ordered the spinach and prosciutto salad that was very tasty but not as big as I we whould have wanted. We also had the eggplant rolls that were really great and very genuine tasting. We had the penne alla siciliana which were very good, and the spaghettini piccanti which my wife found a little heavy, but I though were not bad. The wine list was decent, not very long, but with few pearls. We had a Montepulciano, variety that I am familiar with, but the cantine we chose wasn't the best ever, not bad though. As for desserts, the tiramisu was below average, while my chocolate tortino was ok. At some point the singer/pianist, funny and friendly guy, that had put an entertaining program passed from the tables to get requests. Not in our immediate priorities but we might be going there again some time.

5 Stars: Excellent service, great ambience, delicious food! (by Karl34)

I highly recommend this establishment based on a very positive experience there last night. Making the reservation (late on Friday afternoon for the evening) was easy; the person I spoke to was extremely helpful and accommodating. We were seated immediately upon arrival. The place has an intrinsic ambiance that made us all feel "at home". Water and warm bread were on our table very quickly. The menu selection was very reasonable; they also had two specials also which sounded delicious. Friday is apparently opera night, and it was wonderful to listen to the pianist/singer while enjoying the food (he even did a song from Phantom of the Opera - which my wife likes.) The service continued to be very good throughout. Our food overall was delicious. We'll be back here again!

5 Stars: Perfect for a "dinner and a movie" date! (by louise_if_you_please)

Mamma Melina Ristorante serves Italian dishes prepared with a keen awareness. On our most recent visit, I started with the chef?s whim salad, a daily special, and it was a savory sweet treasure arranged with Gorgonzola and pear. Everything after that was just as superb and we have tried many Italian restaurants.

After dinner we had planned to go upstairs for a free movie screening. As we were enjoying our finely prepared food, we noticed a line forming outside the movie theater (The Landmark Seven Gables Theatre, just in case you want to do dinner and a movie too). When our waitress saw our concern as we reviewed our free movie pass she reassured us that the line had to reach a certain distance before the theater would reach full capacity. She even went to take a peek outside to make sure we were still safe as we finished our coffee.

If you want a charming place to enjoy a fine Italian meal before a movie, or anytime, just try Mamma Melina?s. The Landmark Seven Gables Theatre tends to play arty future classics and we received our free passes from Scarecrow Video, which is in the same Roosevelt neighborhood.

5 Stars: Very Family Friendly. Delicious. Priced right. (by jessrdh)

My family and I recently ate out at Mama Malina's. I have two small children and a husband who's a resident doctor so you can imagine we don't get to go to restaurants much. When we do go out, though, we want it to be family friendly and worth our money. Mama's was that and more! Not only did we get genuine service, we got our food quickly (great for the kids) and felt welcome with our children in this restaurant. The waiter was well-seasoned in the arena of kids. He had the chef make a special children's dish for our daughter, then gave us a heads-up as to the temperature of the food. This restaurant also hosted my daughter's preschool for a culinary fieldtrip. The owners truly are good at what they do and extend themselves to individuals, families and this community. Thank you Mama Malinas.

4 Stars: Great Italian that won't break the bank (by jeeto)

This is my first review. I am an avid reader of Citysearch and always use this site to pick out new restaurants to try out. That is how my friends and I discovered Mama Melina's.

Food was above average and the bread, although salty, was very good. We got fantastic service. The real gem was the piano player who took our request to play "Toxic" and actually performed it on his piano!

4 Stars: Service impecable! (by ficussband)

I must say, I've been able to experience the food quite a few times, and I have never been more pleased. I recently read the total of 3 bad reviews for this restaurant and am completely convinced that these people are legally insane. They are obviously cast members on America's Most White Trash. The lasagna, chipino, and marsala have teased my taste buds more than a super models nether-region. The service has more home feeling than dinner with your wife. Since enjoying the food for over 2 years now, I have never been completely through their wine list... It doesn't seem to end. These "bad reviewers" had to be people who can never be happy. Ready to slaughter any restaurant, via internet. 5 stars to this place for finally letting me know that there is a slice of heaven under these clouds. service was perfect, food was very delicious.

5 Stars: amazing food and service! (by decafan)

I don't usually write reviews but after taking my girlfriend to Mamma Melina this past Saturday I wanted to let others know how good the food and the service was.
We arrived 20 minutes before our reservation and the hostess made sure to get us seated right away and was very accommodating with our request for a window seat.
The food we ordered starting with the Caprese salad was simply prepared but very tasty and fresh.
My main course was a fantastic seafood mixed grill and my girlfriend ordered the special pasta bolognese also very good.
We finished our meal wit a shot of Grappa and a great warm chocolate cake.
This was our first time at this restaurant but for sure we will be bringing all of our family and friends here in the near future.

5 Stars: Great Italian Restaurant EVER! (by jlastaples)

I'm not a food expert, but this place was great. I'm a traveling nurse that love local family own restaurants. Keep your chains(Outback, Applebees and etc.). This place was a great Seattle find. Be sure to save room for Tiramisu. Be sure to make reservations on weekends. And bring tip money for the pianist, he's so pleasurable. Have patience, it's a busy place. Order your wine and chill.

5 Stars: Thank you Mamma Melina for your continous support of our community ! (by onetomunch)

My husband and i are very active members of the University District social services for the homeless and have been dining at this restaurant for years.
We have always enjoyed the wonderful homemade pastas, seafood dishes and desserts, and most of all the atmospere and service.
The wine list is a definate bargain and even when we had a special bottle of wine that we wanted to bring in we have had no problems with the service, matter fact they served our wine in very nice" Nebbiolo" glasses, wich we ended up buying for our own home at cost from the owner.
A special thanks goes out to this guys for supporting the local problems by always donating their help.

1 Stars: Terrible Service, Mediocre Food (by spp126)

I thought to give this restaurant a try based on the reviews i read. Sorry to say my entire family was very disappointed in everything from the food to service. The male host / waiter was very rude and made us feel that we had inconvenienced him by just coming into the restaurant. He was rude the entire evening then gave off an angry expression and rolled his eyes at us when he saw we left a 15% gratutity, as if he deserved any more than that. The pasta lacked sauce ... we were pretty much eating plain boiled noodles. The silverware was dirty and there was something green floating in my glass of water which was warm. Do yourself a favor and try another Italian restaurant, one that actually will appreciate your business!

5 Stars: FANTASTIC NIGHT AT MAMMA MELINA! (by tiopesalert)

WE HAD A PARTY OF 6 AND MADE RESERVATION THE SAME DAY( FRIDAY NIGHT)
WE WERE SEATED RIGHT AWAY WHEN WE ARRIVED AND FROM START TO FINISH OUR MEAL WAS EXCELLENT.
THIS RESTAURANT MAY NOT BE THE BEST OUT THERE BUT THE SERVICE AND THE FOOD DEFINITELY WILL BRING US BACK.
WE ALSO ENJOYED THE LIVE MUSIC AND THE ROMANTIC SETTING,
AND THOUGHT THAT MAMMA MELINAS WINE LIST IS WAY UNDERPRICED SINCE WE HAD A BOTTLE OF GREAT WINE FOR $28, THE SAME WINE THAT WE HAD AT A DOWNTOWN RESTAURANT FOR $ 12 MORE JUST LAST WEEK.

3 Stars: Great service......bad food (by foodieseattle)

My first foray to Mamma Melina last year was a fabulous experience. The two subsequent visits -definite disappointment.
First the wait on a weekend evening is about 40 odd minutes. That is fine if the food that follows is worth the wait. The Bruschetta was soggy and utterly tasteless. The gnocci was undercooked and tasted pasty with lumps of cheese in the pink sauce. The manicotti was tough and thoroughly subpar. Store bought pasta shells filled with ricotta in Ragu/Classico sauce seems like heaven in comparison.

The only redeeming factors for this place are the impeccable service and live music. But thats not much of a consolation on an empty stomach.

4 Stars: Good, but not great (by fwtwo)

My wife and I took two other couples there recently on a Friday night. Was glad I had a reservation, as people were waiting, but we were promptly seated. Wine was a good one at a good price, and most of the food seemed well put together and flavorful. The service was a little slow, but we weren't in any hurry and the place was PACKED. Only real negative was that the house pasta (side to many of the mains) tasted to all like it came from a can with "Chef Boy-ar-dee" on it. Plus, mine was cold, which I HATE.

We liked the place and had a good time, but it was loud (which was ok - we were, too!), and we weren't even near the piano. If you want an Italian place to have a good time with friends, this would be better than most. For a quieter dinner with food that is at least as good, for about the same price, we'll go to Assaggio.

5 Stars: Great food (by e46tiger)

The wait was a bit long on a cold Saturday night (11/2006). We had reservations, yet still had to wait which was made more frustrating b/c there was an empty table sitting there for 20 minutes, the table was ready with settings and was just not being used for 20 minutes. Finally they realized the table was there, so they sat the people before us who did NOT have reservations. Perhaps they stress the walk-in element... After we were sat, the service was good. We shared the Caesar and it was good. I had that evenings veal special and the sauce was flavorful and altogether very good. My dinner companion's dish was also very good. If I eat Italian, I'll be coming here again...

4 Stars: Great Neighborhood Italian (by huskyduck)

It's easy to take a place like Mamma Melina's for granted. It has been around for years, on a corner many people pass by at least weekly if not daily. Seems as though it has been there for years and it has. But the bottomline is the food is authentic and made with love from scratch. Prices are competive with places like Olive Garden but of course the quality is so much higher here. Service is efficient and friendly, they actually do make you feel like you are a part of the family here. Here's to another few decades in this same ole spot.

I've eaten at Mamma Melina a number of times and found it to be consistently excellent. The service is always good and the food delicious. Remember that Tuesdays is half price wine night, and you can trust their recommendations. The wines are reasonably priced to start with, so at half price there are some excellent bargains.
5 Stars: What a great place!! (by nwemerys)

What an enjoyable evening! We arrived a few minutes before our reservation..my husband did let them know he was starving. We were seated rather quickly and bread was brought. Just a few minutes later we were asked if we'd like to move to a table in the back. The table we were sitting at was in front of the piano. They wanted to seat us quickly (so not to starve) but moved us to a better table when one was available. That just doesn't happen at most restaurants. The atmosphere could be whatever you wanted, romantic, family, social. It just had that feel. The food was delicious. The portions are not gigantic (thank goodness), you certainly do not go away hungary! Too full for a dessert? Try the Lemoncello...mmmm. Well worth the drive.

We made reservations, which you should definitely do, were seating right away. Service was excellent. Everyone is attentative, regardless of if they are your server or not. The food was AMAZING. I had the bruscetta and the scampi. Totally amazing. Inexpensive. I honestly could not have asked for a better place for my anniversary. It is a little noisy, but it feels like dinner in the city. Would totally recommend this place if you want the best Italian food.

4 Stars: Make Reservations! (by jtc61904)

The food was good and not too expensive. The staff was very nice. It is a small place and quite crowded so if you are claustrophobic, I wouldn't recommend it. We had reservations but because other people stayed longer than expected, we weren't seated for 1/2 hour after our reservation time. That is why you should definitely make reservations. There were 5 of us and it is a good place for smaller groups, 6 or less. The piano player is a nice addition to the atmosphere. They even do birthday shout-outs and song dedications. Overall, fun and yummy!

we go here quite often, and have always had a fabulous meal. you really do feel you've been invited to someones home for dinner. the patriarch is singing with the piano player (an absolutely fabulous voice to boot), the matriarch is smiling and welcoming and when we've been there, leo is as gracious a host as i've ever come across. the calamari is pitch-perfect and the gnocchi so well-done my mouth is watering as i write this. the wine list is well priced and thoughtful. i'd say the place is too packed and brightly lit to fit my standards of romantic dining. then again, i'm always glad to see it so crowded because it bodes well that we'll hang onto this treasure.

5 Stars: Great all around restaurant (by jdavies1979)

Listen, in response to the second to last review from Diana, she is just a disgruntled former emplyee who worked there over a year ago. She was a very nice girl but just didn't have what Mamma Melina needed in a server. Some people just aren't cut out for it. In my opinion though, it's not a hard job. Most UW students, like myself, can handle it. I on the other hand love working there, along with all the other employees. The food is fantastic, and the prices on both food and wine are so cheap you won't find anything better in Seattle. The highest entree on the menu is only 16.95, and you can get a great bottle of wine for under 30 dollars. ($40 per person is rediculous) In response to the ambiance, Brian our piano player is not running a karaoke bar, he is a professional singer who takes requests and sing 90% italian opera. He is a huge draw to the restaurant. As for the small two top tables, if your server has ever put together a puzzle in kindergarten then they will have the skills to get two entree's, a bread basket and all the drinks you want on your table. It irritated me when I read the review and knew that it was just a lie to make her feel better. If you want to find out who's telling the truth, just come into Mamma Melina and see for yourself. You wont be dissapointed. My name's Jason, I'll see you there.

5 Stars: Mamma Melina is not an indian restaurant. (by eightofspadeere)

In response to the previous member:
We go to mamma Melinas all the times and their food and service is outstanding, we also go to the taste of india and cedars but they are totally in a different category.
We love the chicken dishes and the cannelloni at Mamma Melina
they also offer a great variety of desserts and they have a full bar.
Whenever we have a b.day or a special occasion Mamma Melinas has never dissappointed us.
We do enjoy the piano and it can get loud at times but hey it's part of what this restaurant offers and they dont even charge a cover!!

5 Stars: we really enjoy this italian restaurant (by krissina)

Me and my husband have been going to Mamma Melinas for years since we moved from Los Angeles and really enjoy the service and food at this family owned restaurant.
The pollo al marsala is always excellent and the ravioli special are always worth to try.
Also they have a very affordable wine list with wine specials monthly.
Lately they also have had a chocholate souffle on the dessert list that is to die for.
There are not too many restaurant in this city that can offer value and consitency at the same time, but Mamma Melinas has never dissappointed us.

2 Stars: Used to be much better (by refaholic)

While I mildly enjoyed my food there in the past and much appreciated the nights with live music, my last visit featured horribly bland food. Not too sure if that's a one-time thing, but there are other Italian restaurants in the area with much better food in my opinion.

5 Stars: Anniversary dinner at Mamma Melinas (by marcotodert)

I was trying to decide where to take my wife to dinner for our 5th anniversary on sept 14th and one of my colleagues suggested Mammas, so i decided to make reservation and bring some flowers ahead of time so they could have them on the table when we arrived, and that was when i started to understand why my friend and colleague suggested this restaurant. The host was very helpful to make our dinner a special one. When we arrived our table was ready and the flowers were arranged beautifully on it, the waitress ( Anna) was so professional and very attentive to our needs, and not too invasive.
the meal was great from start to finish and the owner served us a complimentary champagne cocktail served in 2 beautiful stemless glasses.
At the end of our night my wife and i were so impressed by our experience that we decided to take our whole family to this wonderful restaurant for an upcoming B.day.
thanks Mamma Melina for making our dinner one to never forget!!

3 Stars: Not what I had remembered (by helen_f)

I used to go here ages ago--always came with the family and always had a great time. However, I ate out here a little while ago expecting the same fantastic food and treatment, and was sorely disappointed. The ambiance and service was still pretty nice although for a Wednesday night the place was practically empty and left me wanting more of the loud, crowded dining room experience I had had before. My date's three-cheese pasta bake tasted average--like something typical of Olive Garden fare while my proscuitto-stuffed chicken served aside lukewarm spring vegetables was about as appealing as a Hungry Man entree. I haven't given up completely and like to think that perhaps this was simply an off-night. However, if you are searching for a no-fail, truly excellent Italian dining experience I recommend you go elsewhere.

This is a great find! Exceptional service, the staff was very prompt and attentive, never felt like we needed to wait for anything. The restaurant filled up around 8pm and had a warm candle light feel. Wasnt a huge fan of the sauteed squid, but the pastas was perfectly cooked, sauces were rich in flavor. Fantastic desserts! Would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a casual dinner all about family and friends.

5 Stars: we love this restaurant!! (by trulifehro)

From the moment we arrived at Mamma Melina we felt the warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Dinner was superb and the service was flawless.
I ordered the wild mushroom ravioli special with the shaved ricotta and my wife had the salmon special which was perfectly prepared. To finish off the meal we took our waitress' suggestion and ordered a chocholate souffle special that knocked our socks off.
The atmosphere at Mamma Melina is very romantic and they have a funny piano player which also takes requests.
This place is definitely a # 1 on our list of places to go for a casual dinner or a special occasion.

5 Stars: Great restaurant (by rogerandcarla)

I rarely get excited about restaurants, Mamma Melina gets me going! The sautéed calamari is so good, healthy and unique. The variety of things that they put on the plate when you order seafood or meat dishes is amazing. Great drinks (I paid $6 for a very generous pour of absolute martini) that hasn't happened in a few years! Had a very good bottle of red for $25. Gotta love Mamma Melina!

5 Stars: Can't wait to go back!! (by foody1)

I must say i get very critical when it comes to Italian food due to my Italian background. When i first entered Mamma Melina i could tell already i was not going to be disappointed and i was proven right. The truly all Italian ownership shows a great deal of warmth and attention to customers need. The food is excellent and the pricing is very honest, the art on the wall brought me back to my recent vacation to Italy and the live music made my girlfriend melt. We found this restaurant to be very romantic and charming and the staff very knowledgeble. We started with a very tasty portobello mushroom appetizer, Than we had a superb chicken marsala and ziti with meatballs to die for. We had left a little room for "Mamma's Tiramisu" and we thought it was the best in town (please beware of imitations) That was the real deal!!! We were also surprised to find excellent wines at bargain prices.....Can't complain about that!!

5 Stars: Best Italian Ever! (by seattlegreen)

After our third visit we must say that Mamma Melina rocks... It's a busy place and the singing and piano player can get a little loud but they have an amazing way to create a great atmosphere and provide great food and service. The wines are inexpensive and good. I had chicken marsala twice and can't stop thinking about it! All the dishes that we have tried so far are outstanding and fresh, it's that good!

3 Stars: just okay (by mogu)

i read the review here from city search so i decided to try this restaurant, since everyone said was good, so i went there with my bf, they have live music, sang by the owner, the service wasn't good, they never refill our drinks or asking us how was the food and the major thing was they used cheese power instead of fresh parmesan cheese for the final touch of the meal , it is kinda disappointed, and the food just okay, nothing really special, i mean it is fine if you want to just have a meal but if you have expectation about that restaurant you may find that disappointed.

From the moment you walk in the restaurant, we could immediately feel the true Italian warmth! The menu never fails to please me. From delicious fish to savory pastas, Mamma Melina excells.

5 Stars: Our favorite restaurant! (by melmontero2)

This is truly a Seattle gem! We have been to Mamma Melina many, many times and our experience has always been one of great food, superb service, warm hospitality, and a lively yet romantic atmosphere. While the menu is excellent, we usually go for the specials, just because we've had almost everything on the menu, and the specials are to die for. The wine list is thoughtful, and we've found some nice, not too expensive (especially for a restaurant) bottles of lovely Italian wine that you can't find at other Italian restaurants. We prefer to go later in the evening because it can get quite loud at the regular dinner hours on the weekends, but that can be part of the fun too. If you haven't been here, you are really missing out!

Mamma Melina was great to us! The food was exceptional, the service so friendly and kind. I loved the fresh halibut with sundried tomatoes and chardonnay sauce. The great thing is that the pasta and the vegetables that they served with it were perfect as well. We had a very good bottle of wine for $28 (they feature over 150 wines starting below $20). Tiramisu for dessert was the best we have ever tried, definitely homemade.....

2 Stars: Awful service (by proncis)

Went with a group last night, and while we did like the ambiance and food, we were highly disappointed with the service. One of the members of our party has a nut allergy so that person can not have any nuts. She ordered a salad without pine nuts. Dinner arrived and the salad was covered with pine nuts. After it was cleared up, the salad returned an everything was fine, but at the bottom of the plate was a pine nut. Luckily there wasn't too much cross contamination but my problem is that the server took advantage of the situation and made liberities with a potentially fatal situation. An awful situation and one where I will be more than happy to share with other people.

This place was ok- pretty average, but not as great as would be suggested by all the reviews. The food was okay and the service was pleasant. So if you're in the area, it's fine to drop by, but I won't be seeking this place out anytime soon. This place would never be best "italian", or as highly rated, in a city that was more Italian food savvy.

5 Stars: Great Italian Restaurant/ Wonderful Service (by markobear1)

We "found" Mama Melina's after a movie at the Seven Gables a few years ago. What a find. We've been back sevral times and the food is consistently above average , the service is always professional and timely and the prices are reasonable.
The "kicker" is added entertainment sometimes(weekends??) in the form a talented pianist and singer right in the dinig room area.
It always seems a little crowded, but that is part of the ambience.

5 Stars: Amazing....... (by foodguurus)

Incredible food, great service and very affordable prices. Gret wine list as well. We started with a grilled portobello appetizer that was so good I wanted to have another one for dinner! I had a grilled prawns dinner that was served with a side of yummy pasta, roasted potatoes, zucchini and carrots. It was superb! My friend had the homemade ravioli special that was perfect as well. No room for dessert after that but we will return. It was crowded on a weekend night but that's part of the fun!

5 Stars: Just excellent! (by kiddinseattle)

Great homemde raviolis for 12.95 (they make them every day by hand according to our server), superb chicken marsala, and fantastic calamari. A good bottle of chianti for $19 and we were in heaven..... The owners are first generation from southern Italy but the menu has items from all over the country. Very impressive job!

5 Stars: Best Italian Ever (by jamesnorrinseattle)

Even after coming back from Italy I believe that Mamma Melina is the best Italian that I've ever had. It's amazing to find it in Seattle! Great meat and cheese cannelloni, lamb loin with barolo sauce that makes the 'Piemonte' region come to life..... What a treat!! Inexpensive and very good wines as well. Service is fast, good and friendly. My name is Anthony Franco and I'm a very happy costumer!

Very good food, service and atmosphere. We went there last night for the first time and they definitely exceeded our expectations. The atmosphere was just perfect...... Busy yet romantic, candle light and cozy. The food was simply amazing! We asked the server for recommendations and he said: close your eyes and point, you won't be disappointed. He was right! Good wines to go along with the food as well.

5 Stars: our favorite restaurant in seattle (by paperinolo)

we found Mamma Melina on citysearch and we decided to give it a try for my best friends b.day
we were very surprised by how fast they sat us without having a reservation and the place was very crowded.
the food was excellent and our wine was very modestly priced and presented in beautiful glasses.
the server also recommended a chocholate souffle for dessert that it was the best i have ever tried.
we also enjoyed the live music and definitely will be back!
a special thanks to the owner for singing a b.day song for our friend.

Chicken marsala like I've never had. Great value, lots of food on the plate. The flavors are just right and the atmosphere of the restaurant is very nice. We have one comp-laint: the chairs are solid wood. No big deal, just wanted to trow it out there. The wine list is very reasonable with a lot to choose from. We had a very good bottle for $ 26. Although our waitress was new, we were impressed with the friendly, fast and accurate service.

We now know why mamma melina was voted best Italian. We had dinner there last night and it was really good. Incredible atmosphere, half priced wine list on Tuesday nights, great food and amazing service. Oh..... the food is inexpensive for what you get and we seated right next to a Seahawks player......
2 Stars: Why? (by seaski)

Mamma Melina's was ok but I wonder how it could be considered the Best in Seattle. The chicken marsala was acceptable but nothing to write home about and the pasta was so overcooked that it was gooey. If the food had been better, the prices would've seemed reasonable but the wine list was very overpriced. The service was decent. The piano player/singer was entertaining but very loud and limited conversation.

Very good food, service and atmosphere. We ordered the portobello appetizer, the pasta with seafood and the ravioli. We finished with tiramisu....

We visited Mamma Melina with our friends last night and had a superlative experience. It's hard to find a place that will please every aspect of your dinner. The food was fantastic, the service was perfect and the atmosphere was very cool.....The wine list was very well put together. We believe that we found our new favored restaurant. We go to Italy every year and trust us, this one is real...... I always ask "is the owner from Italy" when I go to an Italian Restaurant and....... pronto! The owner shows up and starts going off in Italian. Wait a second I replied, I didn't say that I speak it, I'm just making sure that we are in an authentic place! I can throw a few words if I have to but I definitely know Italian food and Mamma Melina's is very good!

4 Stars: Great service, average food (by lovefood419)

We went here after seeing the great reviews on citysearch. The service was excellent and the ambience as well, but unfortunately we found the food to be average. Both of our dishes were loaded with pasta but little clams (on one) and was lacking flavor, the other dish had shrimp that was good but weren't many of, especially being one of the priciest entrees. It was too bad because the service was great and we still managed to have a good time but wouldn't be returning because the food wasn't impressive. Nice expreience though.

Very crowded, high energy (on a Saturday night) and fun place. The food is very good (and moderately priced) and the service has a miraculous way to shine considering how many people dine there. The atmosphere is very unique and having first generation Italians running the place makes a difference, especially when they yell at each other in Italian (is that a little pre-prepared show?). Great wine list with very reasonable prices. The tables stand less then a foot apart, be prepared to meet your next door diner......Overall, it was a very positive experience and we look forward to going back.

I went to mama melina for the first time with my husband to celebrate our anniversary. We really enjoyed the atmosphere, the true Italian warmth of the owner, the food, and service. Honestly, we couldn't find one thing that we didn't like about this place. Congratulations to Mama, you have good sons! We particulary enjoyed the eggplant appetizer, the chicken with artichokes and the creme brule. They also have a great selection of wines, including a monthly-featured sheet of wines offered at discounted prices. Im sending an email to my contacts about this place, it was that good!
5 Stars: Favorite Italian restaurant (by pingsin)

Mamma Melina is my favorite Italian restaurant in Seattle. I've been there a few times, and each time is always a pleasant experience. The food is consistently good and the price is reasonable. A few things from the menu that I've tried and liked are: mussels & clams in broth (appetizer), veal marsala, and ravioli in rose sauce. I don't think you can go wrong here.

I also love the lively atmosphere in the restaurant, although some people might find it a bit noisy.

Tip: One thing you can do before/after dinner is to catch a movie at nearby Seven Gables or Guild 45th.

This is one of our favorite restaurants, and we always love the food, the service, and the wine list. The specials are thoughtful and always a winner. Our only gripe is that the music is too loud. Be assured that if you sit near the piano, you won't have much conversation. Because it's such a great restaurant, it's usually crowded, and the microphone probably isn't necessary. We'll still frequent the restaurant, but we'll probably stick to nights without the live music.

I was able to practice my Italian with Leo (one of the brothers?), had some great food.... just as good as you would get in Italy and was serenaded by an extremely talented and funny Piano Player. I love this place and will tell everyone I know about it. Oh, Leo opened the door for us as we left the restaurant.... I'll take that kind of hospitality and courtesy any day!

We went on Tuesday night and the food was wonderful and not overpriced. Service was just right and we took advantage of their "half priced" wine list that they offer every Tuesday. I really enjoyed the set menu that Mamma Melina, 3 courses for 19.90 (it' a 15 yrs in business celebration). My entree' chice was the homemade spinach and cheese Ravioli and it was the best I've ever tried. Live music tops it all! Go try it, you'll love it...

You feel like your in Italy, and the guy who sings opera and broadway tunes while you eat is fabulous! The food tastes home made and most importantly, it's consistently good. The dishes are freshly prepared, and authentic. Love it - love it!

4 Stars: PARKING SUCKS (by thespookybell)

Parking is indeed BAD - prepare to walk. The resturant is underneith the 7 Gables theater on the corner of 50th and Roosevelt - there is no parking lot. I enjoyed the food (not much offered for a low carb dieter) but what I ate was excellent and tasted very good. It was a nice place for a first date except for the parking. I didn't like walking in the area as I was dressed much nicer than the casual college kids with knit hats and jeans on the streets and I didn't like walking far as I was a girl alone meeting my date at the resturant. The music got a little to loud to hear and talk over, but the service was great the table was private enough to enjoy the Man I was with not all those around me. In the restuarant everything went well.

5 Stars: WOW !!!! (by marco37)

Some friends wanted to try Mamma Melina and we decided to go along.
When we arrived the host got us seated right away and when we asked him for a suggestion on the wine he gave us a great reccomandation.
The food was fantastic, we all tried the Crab Ravioli, and we shared a couple of appetizers that were also superb.
The live music was a bit loud but made the evening very cheerful.
This is definately a place that we will return to when in the mood for great Italian food, service and atmosphere!

3 Stars: Underwhelmed (by gforecki)

Based upon the many glowing reviews of this restaurant, my husband and I tried Mama Melina this past Sunday. The quality/taste of our meal was, well, underwhelming. We ordered the calamari appetizer, which had a very nice sauce but the calamari was quite chewy and 'fishy.' Next we ordered the special salad which we both enjoyed. For an entree I had the chicken marsala, which was nice, but truthfully not as good as what I've made at home. And lastly, my husband had the special manicotti, which was incredibly bland. The piano and singing elevated the meal from disappointing to fun - but I find it hard to believe that this is the BEST Italian in the city.

We had dinner at Mammas on tuesday night and loved our dinner.
My husband had the lasagna and i had the seafood ravioli, they were both homemade and delicious.
Our bottle of wine was only $18 and the service was right on perfect.
We have been going there for 2 years now since we moved from Cali and this time the crew at Mammas outdid themselves.
We'll be back there soon for some more great food!

4 Stars: Best Italian in Seattle (by stephsmartin)

Truly, this is the best Italian I have ever eaten. There is a reason that this place always has a huge line. I have the shrimp scampi and it was out of this world. Good wines, and it seems like they always have intersting specials to order. I highly recommend them! They are a great family or date place!

The owners are really cool, great first generation Italian family. I'll recommend Mamma's to all my friends.......

5 Stars: Best Italian Food in Seattle (by kerem)

If you think that good Italian food is what you find at americanized italian restaurants like Cuccina Cuccina, you probably won't appreciate this place. If what you're looking for is REAL italian food as you can find in Italy, there is no better place than Mamma Melina's, both in terms of food, and 7 days a week live music, especially when papa Pasquale starts to sing (he is an ex-opera singer).

We did not have a reservation, but the hostess was able to seat us in a short amount of time and offered to bring us a glass of wine in the meantime. I was very impressed with the food, service, and fresh flowers on the table's.
