Just wanted to let you all know that ??Malay Satay Hut? one of our favorite restaurant has been written off our list.
We went there last night (probably for the 15th time) and I had very nasty experiences with my food. First ordered the vegetarian tofu curry and a third through my meal, found prawn shells in my food. Sent that back and thought it an innocent mistake and ordered a yellow curry tofu soup?????.found hair in my soup, and then worse still, bugs stuck to my noodles (found 2). It was clear that they were on the dry noodles and became stuck to the noodle when it was boiled. I was disgusted, the manager came running???..apologized profusely and said he was travelling for many months and doesn??t know what??s been going on and will have a staff meeting that same night. I was feeling awful for the rest of the night???he did not charge for the kids meals and my husband's (obviously to try and keep me happy) ?????..how sad that this happened at a place that used to serve delicious and quality meals. Must say the tell tale signs were there on my last 2 visits as well.

Pros: Used to be a great place with great food

Cons: Unhygienic and Unsafe

I am a Malaysian, born and raised. I lived on the East Coast and have been to many Malaysian restaurants and this is the worst.

The first time we went, we ordered dry beef curry and just liked the name, the beef was so dried, like cardboard and we got about 6-7 pieces of 1" cube and cost $17! The Kangung Belacan was okay. We decided to go back to try the noodles, it was greasy, not even closed to what it is supposed to be like. It is not REAL Malaysian food.

Pros: The only Malaysian Restaurant?

Cons: Expensive

We had a group lunch over this place. A good Malaysian restaurant in Bellevue area. Also has a good number of vegetarian dishes available. I found the price also as reasonable.

I think this restaurant is good but I still prefer to get the ingredients on-line and cook it myself. The site that has everything is www.asiansupermarket365

Beware of stale food. I had a lamb dish once I found it to be too stale (rubbery texture and weird smell). I thought its just me and had it, but I had a terrible stomach pain afterwards. I decided not to eat from there anymore and kept away from the place for many months (6+). Just today I went there, too tempted by the Indian roti canai, and got some Pinapple fried rice to go with it. I have the same stale taste on the chicken in it. It literally stinks.

My advice - if you are going there and having a dish, make sure you try to clean the meat/chicken pieces off any strong gravy and eat it by itself. You are most probably gonna get the weird taste. If so, don't eat it. Most of the times you don't realize the bad taste due to the gravy.

I'll miss the roti canai, but I am done with Malay Satay Hut.

Cons: Stale food, possibly unhygenic, bad service

This restaurant is amazing. Not only is the decor spectacular, the food greatly complements it. I would suggest trying the singapore rice noodles, the roti bread (comes with curry dipping sauce) and mango chicken. This is definitely my favorite place to eat!

The roti canai is one appetizer that we always order at Malay Satay hut.. This place is a good choice, if you like spicy asian/south asian food. Overall, the food is good. The service is okay. All dishes in a single order have never come together, in fact they come really far apart. Overall, I would recommended this place

Good tasty food--but overpriced! Establishment itself was a bit dirty when we last visited. There was some "dirty, wet dog" smell emanating from somewhere, but we couldn't figure it out. Also, when I ordered a Pina Colada from their bar, it virtually had no alcohol and I am a lightweight, so I would've noticed if there was even a reasonable amount in it.

My wife and I have been to this restaurant before, although the first time was fairly near the time they originally opened. This time was a Saturday night and when we first pulled up, we were hesitant to go in because there was a large group of people standing inside the front door and it looked like a long wait. My wife went in to check anyway and fortunately it was only one large group of six waiting for a table to clear.

We were seated promptly at a table for two near the bar and given menus by the hostess. We decided on what we wanted fairly quickly and waited for our waitperson. And we waited. And we waited. Twenty minutes later we assumed it was our waitperson that took our order. I requested we receive our soup as an appetizer and our two plates as entrees. (I looked over my wife's shoulder and there sat the large group of six that was still waiting for their table when we first arrived -- sitting there eating their meal.)

Looking around the restaurant, I couldn't figure out why it took so long to be waited on. They were busy but there were empty tables.

After about 15 minutes, one of our entrees came, delivered by a different waitperson. Getting hungry, we didn't say anything, happy to receive anything we could get. Fifteen minutes later, the soup came. By the time we were just about done with both, the last entree came -- all of this delivered by a different waitperson each time.

In all fairness, the food was wonderful. But it was like the staff was just going through the motions and I've never felt so invisible in a restaurant before. It ruined our Saturday night. (By the time we got our check, the table of six was long gone.) I thought it was generous to leave a 10% tip -- I hadn't done that in years!

OMG--only in France, have I been so ignored by the wait staff. You would think I appeared to have all the time in the world. The food is inconsistent, I find that when I'm with an indian friend they are much nicer and the food MUCH BETTER. So, I am wearing my indian shirt and fake tan lotion to ensure my experience tonight will be better.Wish me luck!!!

Very good food, but the staff is not very friendly if you're black. If you are black, don't hesitate to go there. But also don't hesistate to call them out when they put you near the bathroom, throw your chopsticks on the table, and are otherwise rude.

This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend. I was promptly seated and my order was taken. It was at around 1:30 pm, so it was fairly busy. Server came back to me after 30 mins to confirm that I'd ordered. When I said I did, he asked me for the name of the dish, which ofcourse I've forgotten. I asked him to give me the menu so that I can tell him which dish I ordered. His response was a grunt, which I thought was very rude. When I told him that the dish I ordered was "Nasi Lemak" after looking at the menu, he went back and seemed to enter it in the system. I had my dish in another 10 mins. A soup was served in the mean time, which was not good. My dish was ok, but chicken could have been better cooked. I think I'll give them another shot.

I have to admit we are picky eaters. We eat all around the world and try to sample the best Asian food there is. Taiwan, HK, Tokyo, Indonesia, and the chinatowns of various major cities, etc. etc.

We live close by Malay so every so often we forget our previous commitment to never come again and this Saturday we forgot again. We got coconot fried rice, which had no shred of coconot in it. The curry seafood hot put looked like curry, but tasted very blank. We also suspected the hot put had been standing there for hours as everything was mushy and spongy. The Indonesian chicken was so-so. The only highlight was the $2.95 roti. I almost forgot to tell that we received the desert at the start of our meal, and when we sent it away we found later that we received a half thawed (shaved ice) desert. Amazing. The waiter was surprised and looked annoyed that we did not want to eat it at the start at our dinner. How rude. It was still eatable, so the appetizer and desert were the highlights. Everything in between was not.

We never go there again. We will not forget this time.

Last weekend I returned to the Malay Satay Hut several years after my initial meal there. I can say wholeheartedly that never again will I go so long between visits! The service was very good, with our group of six seated promptly for Sunday lunch. Dishes arrived after ordering in amazing time, and every morsel was enjoyed. Highest marks go to the green beans cooked with shrimp paste, roasted eggplant in sambal sauce, and Hokkien Mee noodles with seafood. Also good were the pineapple fried rice and mango chicken. The beef curry was perhaps a bit tough, but still with excellent flavor. Entrees were shared family-style and at $6 8 per plate for generous servings, the meal was economical and resulted in plenty of leftovers.

Having recently moved to this area from San Fran, we are constantly looking for Asian restaurants in the Seattle-area that would prevent us from driving up to Vancouver for our fix. We have finally found our spot to quench our craving for Malaysian food. The food here is very tasty, from roti canai and satays to their curry beef (beef rendang). Overall, the prices are a bit higher than what we were used to in SF, but it sure beats driving. Our only complaint is the service. Once our server took our order he was GONE! Never did he check on us to see if we were doing ok or see that our water glasses were filled. He was quite cocky too, not having to write any of our order down. Take out next time.

The original restaurant hails from the International District, but a few years ago the owners opened up a branch in Redmond. Its popular with the Microsoft lunch crowd, and you can order things ranging from typical Chinese fare to the exotic. Prices are very reasonable and portions are large. Be sure to try their thick avocado shake, a standard in SE Asian cooking, but atypical for everywhere else! The only downside is that youll probably leave the place smelling of Asian food.

I have been going to the restaurant for close to 8-9 years now and have noticed that the quality has degraded since the expansion. It seems that when the owner is at one of his restaurants, the quality seems to be better probably because of his oversight. Some days, the quality of same dishes that I order frequently have been widely inconsistent, ranging from excellent to mediocre. I'm hoping that the owner reads these reviews and take them as constructive criticism to improve and standardize the quality of his menu. The wait staff aren't very customer friendly overall. I will still continue going to the restaurant, but sometimes it's hit and miss on the quality.

I work right down the street from the location in Redmond and decided to give it try since it appeared to always be busy. The food is amazing and the menu choices are incredible with a mixture of Thai, Chinese and Indidan dishes. I would agree with previous reviewers that the service isn't the best but this is certainly one of those places where you can forgive the bad service for the great food. Lunch specials are a great value at $6.45 to $6.95 and portions are huge. This really is one of the better Asian rest. on the eastside!

Agree with JoeBrandon. Serving is getting smaller. Been there a few things and there are no consistency as well. Service is really bad too. Server kept trying to take our food away. I TRIED real hard not to go there. Hope someone opens up another Malaysian Restaurant around here. We NEED competition bad here.

The food is always good at the MSH, but the servers treated us (4 UW college students) as though we were going to walk out without paying. The management was hesitant to let us sit far from the registers, watched over us as we put money out to pay and then quickly counted the money before we even left. Nobody deserves that type of distrustful treatment!

The service at this place was awesome. Everything was prompt, I brought in a large party and they even threw in desert for free. The serving sizes were nice and quality was very good. Too bad this place is Cash only. This place was listed at $21-$30, but after drinks, meal and desert, we averaged $12/person

I just can't believe anyone has given this a bad review -- this is one of the best restaurants I've eaten at in the Seattle area. The ambience is fun, the wait staff friendly and on top of things, the food is great! As a vegetarian, I was really happy. Their tofu-mango entree is wonderfully fresh and spicy. Their spring rolls are unusual and filling. My husband (non-veg) loves his food, but always steals some of mine when we go here. If you're up for an unusual dessert, get the shaved ice (and be prepared for a surprise at the bottom). Oh, and they deliver if you live within 2 miles.

i'm surprised not to see malay satay hut in the running on "the best of". i'll have to admit that when i started going to malay satay in the i.d. about 1.5 years ago it was not much to look at. however, the food is excellent, even if the lineups are not. try the roti, the satay, the green beans... anything on the menu is good. the i.d. district was closed due to a fire early 2002 but is PROMISED to re-open any day soon.

The food used to be very good. My last few visits were pretty disappointing thought. Portions noticably getting smaller, & the food are not as tasty as before. The laksa seems like they diluted the flavor by adding too much water - maybe so that they can served more customers with what they have left? Nevertheless, this is the only decent Malay restaurant I can find. Sigh! I guess you have no choice but to go here if you are craving for some deteriorating Malay food. WE need more Malay res. in Puget Sound!!!!!
