I love Soontofu. Although it was not the same as the one I had in 2006 on my first trip to Seattle, Soontofu was still delicious. However, If I'm to be served by the angry old lady who served me in 2006 and then this year, I would pass this restaurant this summer. I'm puzzled what's wrong with her? Good food and a bad waitress! What a combination!

I would not recommend anyone to go there purely because some of the people (not all) who work here are racists. If you are not Korean or even white, you?ll get the most awful service in the world or in my case no service. One incident and worst: they simply ignored my party when we were there. About three or four other parties behind us were served, given appetizers, and their food while we didn't have anything. We didn?t even have water. The server came back around with appetizers and we?re thinking ?finally, appetizers? she looked at us (with nothing), and gave all the appetizers to everyone around us who already had appetizers and their food. We got up and left. Other people I know, even Korean friends with inter-racial relationships have had the same problem and will never go back.

Pros: Food

Cons: Service

After reading all of the posts about the horrid service of Hosoonyi, I really have to disagree. I visited here as I live in Edmonds myself and the food was supposed to be excellent. Well, I found that the food was really good and there doesn't seem to be a lot of disagreement in that category. If you like Korean food, I'd wager you'll really enjoy the food here. I just received good service which is what seems apparently out of the ordinary, from what everyone seems to be saying. The service wasn't really exemplary, but I didn't have any complaints and thought the service was just fine. The waitress was attentive and paid us enough mind that we didn't need to flag her down. I'd recommend this place to lovers of Korean food.

Pros: Good food, decent prices

Cons: Not the nicest place, but it's not a dive.

My brother and I came here and really enjoyed ourselves. We laughed about how people said that the service was not so hot, and even unattentive...so of course we were looking for that. It never happened. Our server was very nice and did just that. Took our order, served us...I mean, what more can you ask for? A personal serenade? Anyway, we ordered the Bi Bim Bop and it was very fresh and full of flavor. The ingredients were good quality and we are looking forward to coming back and trying out some new dishes.

The food at Hosoonyi is really, really good, but yes, the service, as everyone has noted, is terrible. My boyfriend is Korean American, and I am white. If I go to Hosoonyi with him, we get stellar service (mind you, I have never, ever had my water refilled in ANY Korean restaurant). If I go alone or with other whities, we wait FOREVER for our food. There is one woman working there now, as of this review, who is quite sweet, charming, and attentive, but we'll see how long she lasts.

I disagree about the seafood pancake - I find it incredibly undercooked. But the kimchee tofu soup is world-rocking, and at under $8, a fantastic meal.

I've been going to Hosoonyi since it opened. I usually have my mother (who's Korean) order since she's Korean and will yell at the staff if they aren't attentive. As the previous person said, they treat non-Korean Asians the worst. The quailty of the kalbi meat has gone down hill over the years. I would say it's an average Korean restaurant. I usually rate a good Korean restaurant by quality of their kimchee, kalbi, and cheege.

...yeah, the service. The guy there (always wears glasses) is always accomodating, but a few of the older Korean ladies...well, let's just say that there's a shared observation with other Asian Americans that they only accomodate Korean and white customers. Aren't either? Uh-oh.

I brought my uncle there once. His glass was empty, and he needed it from the kim-chi he ate. No one came. It wasn't that crowded yet. I had to get up, and get a pitcher, and bring it to the table.

When I went with a friend, we ordered three dishes, at a table for two. This doesn't include the 'panchan'. We asked if it was possible to move, and the lady looked annoyed and rolled her eyes. Again, it wasn't crowded, and all the food wasn't even on the table yet. But we forgot, we're neither Korean or white, so nope, we can put the excess plates on my lap.

And yet, overall, I do recommend it. The food is good, and it's worth the wait. It's a roll of the dice with what server you get, but if it's the guy, you won't be neglected.

Cons: service, long lines (especially on the weekends)

Hosoonyi Restaurent is one of a few nice korean restaurent in town, even thought the service is poor (this is typical Korean style service even in those really expensive restaurent in Seoul..) but the food is quite authuntic (yes, the Koreans never like to comprmised on taste (ie: Americanized) therefore, if you are not accustom to Korean food, maybe the taste might not suit you..) btw, tell you a little secret of Korean restaurent, if you look Asian, they will treat you better (except Japanese, which alot of older generation Korean really hate!!!) and for Americans, they seems to not wanting to talk to you because alot of the restaurent staff's English skills are soso...

But I still recommand it.

The haemul pajeeon stands out (8/10) , chigaes so-so (5/10)and barbeque rather mediocre(4/10 too sweet), panchan was barely passing(3/10) and service was below acceptable standards(3/10 and not worth the tip).
If this is the best in WA, I'm sorry for you guys
Come to Desa Hartamas in Kuala Lumpur where the Korean sashimi is super, Kalbi is great and the side dishes excellent ( plus you don't pay tips)

Most of the reviews of this restaurant said that the food was great and the service not so great. I would respectfully beg to differ.

The food is probably great if you're a Korean. If you're a westerner, you may find some of the offerings not to your taste. As a for instance, we had the tofu soup with seafood. While the broth and the tofu were fine, the seafood not exactly fresh.

As for the service, it was great. Prompt and attentive.

I did notice that a couple of large groups had lined up as we left, waiting no doubt for an equally large table. It was clear that the restaurant would soon be packed to the gills.

The bill was outstanding. Two people well fed with a wide variety of food for 16 bucks and change + tip.

Like most other Korean restaurants, when you order entrees at Hosoonyi, you also get free appetizer (which is probably included in the price of your entre) with your entre. The appetizer itself is like a little sampler of everything, which includes 4-5 little dishes of kimchee, sprouts, potatoes, anchovies, seaweed, and more. I like most things on the menu, but my favorite dish is the seafood tofu soup, its steaming hot because the wait staff cracks the egg at your table, and the egg is usually cooked in a couple of minutes.

PROS: Delicous Food! Great Price!
CONS: Wait staff speaks limited english.

This is my second favorite korean restaurant, 2nd because it's so far away for me! This restaurant is always packed. Beware of the crowd on Sundays, after church. Service isn't the greatest, because it's so busy. You'll see your waitress at the beginning, and end. That's it. If you need something, be proactive, and they'll get it for you. But that said, man, is the food delish, delish. The best. You'll notice it when you see your rice with peas in it. Pretty, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing! Everything on the menu is delicious, and authentic! Some favorites: kalbi is always good (our version of steak), daeji boolgogi (spicy pork), haemool pahjuhn (seafood pancake) is a little oily, but delish too!

PROS: Best korean food, authentic!
CONS: Service is always busy, and it's a little far.

Although I haven't been to many Korean restaurants anywhere, Hosoonyi is definitely by the far the best I've been to, and it seems to be the Korean restaurant of choice for almost everyone I've talked to for the whole Seattle area. There are big lines at busy times, but it's worth the wait.

Even after moving to DC for 2 years, my husband & I are still craving for Hosoonyi. We have yet to find matching meals here! Though the services are bad even for Koreans, the food is worth the wait. When we visit Seattle, that's the first place we'll go for dinner! Go early for better services!!!

Let's be honest. This is a Korean restaurant. If you don't know Korean restaurants, you need to learn. The service at this restaurant will never be as quick as you want it to be, so chill - chat with your friends, catch up, socialize. The wait for the food is worth it.

If you don't have the patience to sit still, don't come - it's as easy as that. If you want some of the best Korean food in Washington and are willing to wait for it, this is the restaurant for you.

I used to be a regular customer until one evening while my date and me were having dinner and found a hair inside one of the side dishes. When we approached the waitress with the hair, she just took the dish away and never came back! My date and I lost our appetite and was disgusted at the thought of even eating any more. We were never given any apology at all. To make matters worse, the next day, we both suffered an upset stomach from the food we ate that night before (although our appetite was ruined, we didn't want to waste any food since we were paying money from our own pocket to eat). Need I say more?

I have eaten at Nobu's in Manhattan and Miami, Matsuhisa's, Iron Chef Morimoto's place in Philly, Joe's Stone Crabs, Mario Battali's Lupa, Pinks Chili Dogs, Wild Ginger, the French Laundry... none of them compare to Hosoonyi's.

Long wait is almost certain. But hey! There must be some reasons for people willing to stand in the line... Food is good and price is fair. Tofu hotpot is a must to try. The seafood pancake is also good (Like a medium size pizza) don't be afraid to get more small dishes (kimchi, radish etc.), they are delicious. Only one suggestion to them is to hire more waitresses. They are always in a hurry. From Sitting customers, taking order, serving food and drink, to cleaning tables; they do them all. No wonder people always complain about their no-smile waitress, and slow service. Anyway, its worth to try.

Their specialty is Soon Dubu Chige (soft tofu soup), and it's excellent. Comes sizzling in bowl in different flavors: seafood, beef, pork, kimchi.

You absolutely MUST order the haemul pajon (seafood pancake). It is unbelievable.

i went there with my friend because she told me it's the best Korean food. But she also warn me about the service. well, it's true that servers are not friendly at all even with Korean customers(you won't even see their smile). my friend had to walk to ask for more hot tea. we waited anout half and hour to get the food. and yes, it's all delicious. If you want to have real Korean food and don't mind long waiting in busy hour and unfriendly servers, i guess it's okay to give it a try. Good luck!

Unusual location for this gem. But if you can make the effort and have the time and patience, well worth it.

Food Quality is by far easily the best in Seattle. Ambience is OK.

Be Warned - expect very long weekend waits; best tried during weekday evenings.

Thank you!!
