In Short
In "The Great Good Place," sociologist Ray Oldenburg proposed that everyone needs three places: home, work, and a "third place" to meet and socialize. Owner Ron Scher created Third Place Books with Oldenburg's vision in mind. His meeting place boasts a full schedule of free author events, musical performances, lectures, literary discussions and poetry readings, and sells new, used and collectible books. An in-store Honey Bear Bakery provides coffee and baked goods.

Great store for new and used books

by md m. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,938

This is a fun store to spend a few hours in. They carry a wide variety of books and a huge selection of magazines. While they don't always have the book I'm looking for they do more often than not. They also have authors there for book signings pretty often. Best of all is being able to shop in a "local" bookstore too, as the giants have taken over most of the bookstore landscape.

A great place for people of all ages!

by Victoria M. | insider Insider | Rank: 32,000

My 3 1/2 year old son and I love to visit Third Place Books regularly. They have an excellent children's section with wonderful programs. We have enjoyed several author visits. The space is large, yet welcoming. I especially enjoy that the used books are shelved with the new books. I have found great deals here! They offer book clubs, teacher discounts, and events for all ages. This is one of my favorite places!

Readers' Heaven

by Denise N. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,937

Third Place Books is a wonderfully large bookstore with a small-town friendliness. Casual and relaxed atmosphers, knowledgeable employees, great selection. Icing on the cake is that the store is open ended on one side, surrounded by restaurants, a bakery, and scheduled live music.

A great place to browse and shop

by Diane C. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,940

It is a large book store with a very good variety. The commons area outside the book store always makes it a fun place to go. The selection of books in almost any department is very good and it's always nice to be able to find the book you want in a used copy.

A northend staple

by Chase A.

Third Place is easily the anchor of Lake Forest Park's business district. With author appearances, open mics, a bakery and a giant public chessboard, the store is more a community center that happens to have a great book selection, with both new and used (good condition) at decent prices. The store also has a variety section with journals, calendars, and fun random stuff. Though I've generally had great customer service, at least one bookseller was terse and off-putting.

During the Christmas rush.

by Beth C. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,571

I was looking for three particular books and didn't want to pay top dollar for them. I was driving by and thought I should go in and check it out. I found all three books that I needed with the help of the customer service desk and they even wrapped my presents for free in the wrap of my choice.

Love this place.

by alikeenan

From the organic blueberry muffins at Honey Bear Bakery to the awesome children's area in the bookstore, this place is a destination that always makes me smile. My kids are learning to play chess with the oversized set (board is about 16 square feet) and always have a great time when we go.

Pros: plenty of parking, kid friendly, good live music
