i recently had the pleasure of eating lunch at the poodle dog. The lunch was very good, then we decided on desert. The wait staff suggested the home made cobbler to us. They told us that the baker had been baking for them for fifty years. We got the strawberry rhubarb cobbler-it came pre made in a warm bowl with ice cream-it was the BEST we have ever had! I wish I would have known about the desert, I would have just ordered it for lunch! It truly was the best cobbler I have ever had and I highly recommend going there anytime! I cannot wait to go back!

My husband was told the Poodle Dog had great food. I would say I can cook anything much better. I am 26 years old I was so taken a back by the way the waitress ignored me and my 2 year old son only speaking to my Husband and at the end of our meal leaning over exposing cleavage and putting my Husband to go box in his hands not on the table. Now I know what you are thinking I am just some insecure women who felt threatened but nothing could be further from the truth I am a size six with a flat tummy very well proportioned and I hate to toot my own horn but I have a nice face and a great smile. I don't really know what was on that waitresses mind other than a tip which if I hadn't have been caught so off guard I would of swiped up. So girls if you are looking for a nice night out with your Boyfriend be prepared to have your night ruined I was severely disappointed and I will never go back my Husband was working long hours and this was suppose to be a family outing a chance to spend some quality time together and instead I left the restaurant feeling defeated and dismissed.

This is a comment to what First L said "Putting the Flag in the dumpster"
We work at Military Base in Tacoma and we plan to eat out, try local places every month. Our co-worker decided we try Poodle Dog. After I read the review from First I determined to let everybody know about it. Management who don't think disrespecting a flag is not somebody I would like to have any business with.

I hate saying this, but the Poodle Dog really needs some work. The service not great and the food was about average. I really wish I could give it a rave review since I think its pretty cool how long it has been there. Maybe Gordon Ramsey can visit and help out.

This is a dirty, greasy spoon with the worst service in the Sound. Period. Don't waste your money or time. This dirty Dog is well past its Day and the employees appear to hate thier job. It's not just ORIGINAL, it's DINGY!

I went to the Poodle Dog for a meeting today for the first time. I was surprise to find out that the food was really good. The service was okay, but the place was nice and clean and I plan to visit there again in the near future.

I went in for breakfast at the poodle dog restaurant the tacky looking sign outside read "Good Food" too bad I cannot attest to that fact.We went in, sat down, and waited for service but the waitress was across the restaurant and never came over to help us which was weird because there were only about four couples total in the restaurant. We flagged down the busser and asked him if we could please have some coffee while we waited he was very courteous and immediately brought us coffee. We had only taken about 2 sips of our coffee when another couple sat down. My husband said to me, If they go over and take their order before us, we are leaving. I agreed with him completely since we had been waiting about 30 minutes and this couple had just sat down. I was very irritated to see the waitress go over to them and ask them if they knew what they wanted. At that point we were both disgusted with the whole thing. We got up to go pay for the coffees that we barely even tasted. The manager rang us up. As she did I explained to her we were waiting for service for 30 minutes and didn't get any service, fully expecting her to comp us our coffees but apparently she only worked there for the paycheck and nothing else because she didn't care she also had a big grimace on her face. I was not rude to her so I don't know why SHE had the attitude. I ended up pay full price for both coffees. We went to mitzel's across the street and their service was awesome. at least they fed us!

I normally have the chicken fried steak, which is great. I also love the hamburgers. I have been around long enough to recall using the Poodle Dog Restaurant as our local land mark. Which is at the main crossings for I-5. I has always been pink, until not long ago, now it's beige/tan. I really would like to see it pink again. I am always treated with respect by all staff members. The food is a little high, but well worth it. I always recommend the poodle dog, to my customers. Try it for yourself, give yourself plenty of time and just relax. It's well worth it. Real down to earth good ole' fashion service.

I ordered liver and onions and decided on salad. Asked for a "side" of mashed potatoes. I was informed that, even though it is not listed on the menu, mashed potatoes come with the meal. After about 10 minutes my entree came. The potatoes are riced, not mashed. I do not care for the texture of riced potatoes. The salad did not materialize. I did not mention it to the server as I want my salad before my entree.

When I went to pay I picked up a York mint and placed it beside my debit/MC card and said "I'll take one of these" (meaning--I'll pay for this with my meal). I did not put it in my pocket or purse; I put it beside the card that I was going to pay my bill with. The server then told me that they were 25 cents; maybe I didn't see the price on the large box; that I needed to put a quarter in the small Styrofoam cup; people think they are free and take them. She kept going on about them being 25 cents (duh, I KNEW that). I dug around and found 3 dimes and put them in the cup and then said that I thought she would be adding it to the bill for me to pay with my card. She remarks that she supposed she could have done that--and then continued on some more about people just taking the mints.

Won't be back. She acted as though I was going to steal a lousy 25 cent mint. That, and the fact that the salad never was served.

Even though I was treated so poorly by the server (who also took payment at the till) I left my standard $5 tip for the approx. $10 meal.

My family has been coming here for years. Great home style food, the peanut butter pie is awesome! If you don't have a stick up your you-know-what (like Bob H.) the environment of the restaurant is just great. It's not supposed to be ultra-posh, It's an old 1930's diner, it's not "dingy" at all (as Bob suggested). It's original!!!!

I recently witnessed, in the late morning, the lowering of the tattered US Flag, by an employee of the Poodle Dog. He replaced it with a new one. However, he took the old flag, to the dumpster, and just threw it in. Then proceeded to throw garbage on top of it. When I called the manager, on duty, she just laughed at the matter. She stated it was no big deal. Its just an old flag. I am a military veteran and a proud US Citizen. Old Glory still means something to me. I will never, ever again, patronize this restaurant.

By the way, the Poodle Dog is located in FIFE, not Tacoma. They really are two separate cities! What Bob H. in 2006 wrote about the chef wiping his nose was rather gross; I hope that doesn't really happen, but we all know it does in probably every restaurant. Just don't look in the kitchen!! We've been eating at the Poodle Dog almost every Sunday now for over a year. The waitresses (are they called that anymore?) are wonderful and remember us. The food is usually good, but once in a while has been less than adequate. But, we stick it out, enjoying the atmosphere. It's VERY busy Sunday mornings; Friday nights are usually very slow.

I ate here with my family on July 4th for lunch. I may have been able to look past the slow, almost non-existent service and generally dingy overall condition of this place had the food been even halfway decent. That was simply not the case. My daughter ordered spaghetti with a side of parmesan cheese. The little cup of shredded parmesan had a piece of breakfast sausage in it! It was just gross! My wife ordered eggs, hash browns and toast. The hash browns were hardly cooked and the toast had a 1/4 cup of butter on it. All this after waiting for over 15 minutes for someone to take our order and more than 30 minutes for our fairly simple order to arrive. I could understand if it was busy, but that was not the case. Looking back, we really should have walked out after I saw the chef wipe his nose with his hand in the kitchen while preparing food. My advice, just because something has been around for a long time doesn't necessarily make it good. As far as the others who think this place is good, they must have spent too much time in the bar before actually eating the food. - Go somewhere else and don't look back!

PROS: Leaving without throwing up - ample parking (understandable)
CONS: Food, service, cleanliness, overpriced - everything was bad

Located in Fife, this is a valley landmark. Louis Armstrong and Glen Miller have played in this lounge. It's been a happening place since the 1930's. They offer great food and a rarely-seen, authentic old-Americana atmosphere. A really fun, unique place to eat or grab some drinks.

PROS: Food, decor, history
CONS: prices are a tad bit steep

this is the place to go. It's been there for years and years, and everyone enjoys their visit to this old fashioned home town restaurant. The food is solid and the prices are reasonable.
