I always thought Gene Juarez would be an amazing "top dog" place considering the prices. Not so. I went to get a bayalage (a french technique of highlighting) I told the woman I wanted honey/caramel tones. What did I get? Light

I have had several hair cuts at Gene Juarez and the only person that is allowed to touch my hair is Althea. She does a great job with curls and isn't afraid to listen to my suggestions. I've had some TERRIBLE haircuts from these folks in the past and some pretty good standard ones. The staff often treat folks that aren't dressed in the latest trends like crap. It is really unprofessional and rude! In sum, go at your own risk.

The other services at Gene Juarez, however, are amazing. The Spa is so cozy and relaxing. I had the spray tan services and some sort of relaxation package before my wedding. I felt and LOOKED like a million dollars afterwards. Since I am so fair, I was afraid that the tan services would make me look orange. On the contrary, I looked sun kissed and warm; not what I had expected at all!
Their make-up artist, Antoinette, does an amazing job using mineral makeup. My skin never looked more even and healthy in my life! She really knows how to do makeup that looks great for wedding photos but also looks natural for the wedding itself. She also gave me a really cool sample of the lip gloss she used on me for touch ups. How nice!

Pros: Ace makeup artists, relaxing spa

Cons: Stylists are horrible!, Classist staff

Gene Juarez has a great atmosphere. They treat their customers very well. Unfortunatly the services are overpriced for what you can find elsewere. I have gotten pedicures and waxes. The price of the waxing is comparable but the pedicures are way overpriced and not that great. I would say that if you feel like being pampered then yes this is a great salon. If you are going for your routine wax or pedicure save your money and go elsewhere.

I had my hair cut and colored at this place and they truely treat you like a queen. The staff is friendly and it was a day to relax without no kids around. The price can be high, but it's a great way you can get a group together and gift certificate for a friend.

I just had the Northwest Tan service done, and it was a wonderful experience. The woman at the front desk was warm and helpful, and I was taken to the body treatment area almost immediately. I was asked to change into a robe (very soft!) and sandals and lock all my things (clothes, purse, etc) in a garment bag attached to a hanger. You have to hook the key onto your robe, and I thought it was a pretty neat idea...I felt my belongings were safe.

I then sat in a dim, relaxing area of the spa and was offered a beverage. I probably waited about 10 minutes, then Michael (she's one of the body treatment/massage gals) came out and gave me a basin of warm soapy water to soak my feet in, along with a warm neck pillow which really helped me relax. I was asked to fill out a form that asks about areas of concern, medical issues, etc. When I was done, I was shown the Vichy shower room where my treatment began.

About the treatment itself - absolutely wonderful! The exfoliation was quick but nice, and the Vichy shower was AMAZING...I highly recommend it. Although I was sans clothing, towels were draped over my chest and bottom half the entire time, and I never felt exposed or uncomfortable. The shower both stimulated my body and completely relaxed me - it even cleared my sinus congestion that had been annoying me for the last couple of weeks. When it was over, I could feel a difference in how soft my skin felt. Next came the tanning application, and that was extremely nice. Think of a light-touch full-body and facial massage, and that's pretty much what you can expect. It left me with a nice golden color from the color guide. I haven't showered yet, so I can't speak as to how the final color will look, but so far so good. It's a little "splotchy" in the face area, but I didn't exfoliate my face before-hand, so I'd advise anyone getting this service to do so.

I didn't experience any of the problems other posters did, and I'd recommend this spa to anyone!

Since when was it acceptable to treat one's clients as if they were the hired help? I have patronized some of the finest salons and spas all across the world and have to say that those currently employed in the Tacoma Mall salon have not been appropriately trained to serve their clientele. I made an appointment for a haircut and foil and upon arrival 20 minutes prior was told, "sit down...we'll let you know" by a snotty overly made up gal at the desk.
I sat and waited not just the twenty minutes but an additional ten before my stylist came out. The stylist was too distracted to bother with conversation and concentrated on talking with another stylist near her during the appointment. During the foil waiting time there was no offer of coffee, water or a magazine, just - "OK, I'll be back - you know the drill" and with a toss of her spikey hair she was off to work on another head.

I won't go back. Why bother? If the inflated prices were for a higher quality experience, I would unhesitatingly re-schedule. Since they are not, I can just go elsewhere and get a comparable hair cut and color where I'm not just another head on the books. Time for some customer service workshops, or, the staff can just go over to Nordstrom and observe how they treat their customers. It's like night and day how stark the difference is!

Pros: Parking is plentiful, good shopping nearby, decor is nice in the salon

Cons: Below average customer service, got behind on the schedule, not fun

I don't know what it is about Gene Juarez, but their stylists only know how to do one haircut: a mullet! I've paid $50+ more times than I'd like to admit (because it's supposed to be the best salon in Seattle, after all) for terrible cuts. Save your money, so somewhere - anywhere - else!

Pros: Kerastase products, convenient locations

If you are looking for a talented and friendly esthetician, look no further! AUREA at the Tacoma Gene Juarez Spa is amazing! I've been going to her for the past couple of years and she has never once disappointed me! She does everything from a brow arch to facials! Ask for Aurea the next time you book an appointment at this Spa!!!

Pros: Seperate Entrance to the Salon from the exterior of the mall!

Cons: none. Aurea is amazing and it is a very comfortable environment.

I have been going to this salon for several years. Once you find a stylist that "gets" you, it's a great experience. The staff is friendly and service oriented. I do agree that the front desk reception staff can be fairly condescending - not sure what that's about - maybe they just need different training. Overall, the best place I've found to get a good hair cut that really works for me.

I arrived exactly on the minute to my appointment, was coming from half hour away and it was pouring rain outside, and the man at the counter asked condescendingly, "What happened to YOU?" He was extremely snotty and rude! If I hadn't been getting the haircut for a special occasion the following day, I would have turned around and left. My stylist didn't even come out until 10 minutes after I arrived. My hair stylist also had a very "uppity" attitude. The cut was decent, beside having to wait ten minutes for the stylist to leave and cut somebody else's hair in the middle of my cut. Definitely not worth the $55 plus tip and the rude attitudes!

I have had a spa pedicure and a relaxing massage here. It is a place that really makes you feel special. You are given a robe and slippers to put on, you are served spicey tea, the lights are dimmed, soft music is playing, there is a waterfall, and the whole experience is tranquil. You come away from there totally relaxed.

Nice place, but the staff at the counter think they are better than people because they set up appt's. HAHAHAHA what a joke.

I've been here with my wife a few times and I've had my hair cut while she was having a pedicare and they not only cut your hair but they give you a complimentary mustache trim if you need it.
