Message from St. Clouds Food & Spirits

"Building community by bringing people together around great food" That's what we do here at St. Clouds. Our upscale casual atmosphere & welcoming spirit encourage people to come together to break bread. As an urban neighborhood restaurant, we offer both traditional comfort food & contemporary seasonal cooking. Dinner 7 nights a week and a killer brunch on weekends. Happy Hour: (1/2 price all drinks) in the Cloud Bar weekdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. We also keep the urban vibe going with LIVE MUSIC Friday, Saturday & Monday nights, with music from jazz and blues to Latin and contemporary. Catering from St. Clouds is creative, unique and focused on hospitality-warm, attentive, personal. Rather than a list of options and menus, we will design a menu and service style to fit your event exactly, resulting in a one-of-a-kind occasion with the freshest and most flavorful food.

The Scene
Owners Paul Butler and John Platt named the place after the orphanage in "The Cider House Rules," hoping to impart a sense of warmth and welcome. Locals duck into the dimly lit piano bar to see familiar faces, then slide over to the dining room for dinner. Servers are eager and informative, even offering an occasional sample of wine.

The Food
Simple home-cooked meals are the draw. Start with the near nirvana-inducing portobello pizza (request the chicken-apple-sausage topping), or the bread salad with sauteed shrimp, dotted with tart pomegranate. The aptly named "Home for Dinner" section of the menu offers a succulent herb-roasted chicken. Or choose to go "Out for Dinner," which roams the world for flavors and ingredients and changes seasonally.

Key Points

  • Extensive wine list
  • Neighborhood atmosphere
  • Jazz and Blues

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - Weekdays from 5pm to 6:30pm brings happy hour--and with it half-off all drink orders.
  2. When to Go - Music fans should check out the diverse live music schedule, featuring everything from bluegrass to jazz.

A HIdden Gem

by Tony D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,450

This restaurant is undoubtedly one of the best kept secrets in Seattle. Nestled in a quiet neighborhood near pleasant shops, Saint Clouds has some of the best food to be had in the city. The bar is renowned among those in the know as a friendly and pleasant place to get a well mixed drink. The herb roasted chicken is a particular favorite. Be sure to stop at Verite coffee down the street for a cupcake and a hot coffee after dinner.

PROS: excellent menu, great atmosphere
CONS: off the beaten track

Home-cooked taste

by pikake21

This is a great little find if you're ever in the neighborhood. They truly serve up some serious comfort food, and a great burger! We came here for a friend's birthday for the first time a couple of years ago, and halfway through dining there was a power outage! The staff was great, and nobody felt panicked, but they began lighting candles and it turned into an even more intimate setting. This is a must-dine establishment during the summer as the cool air can stream through the restaurant and you really feel as though you've found somewhere that is not typical of Seattle.

Pros: great staff, wonderful food, perfect location

Great service, great food, family friendly!

by sunahall

We love St. Clouds. We went there before having a baby and now it is one of our favorite places to eat out. The food is always great and the service is friendly. The outdoor garden in the back is a real treat in the summertime.

Love it

by betty97

Great neighborhood joint, and always welcoming of you whether you are dining with a crowd or alone. Good food and great drinks as well, if a little on the expensive side.

Excellent

by pgcarlson

The food is great, cool atmosphere, the service is consistenly excellent, and it's a real fair price. My only caution is that they serve really, really heavy comfort food. But it's sooooo good.

try it again

by mt1903

Some of the older reviews of St. Cloud say that the service was terrible. Maybe they have hired new people since then, or maybe they just improved over time, but now the service is usually pretty good. The waiters and bartenders are friendly and outgoing, but not in that "hi, my name is steve and I'll be your server today" obnoxious sort of way. The the menu is small but the food is all good and the specials are usually amazing. If you ate here during the restaraunt's first few years and were disappointed with the service, give it another try and you should be pleasantly suprised.

Pros: specials, service, ambiance

Cons: no lunch

Sounds like a nice friendly place. . .

by seattlemagnoliabuff

but this was the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant in or out of Seattle. Food was mediocre, service was also mediocre until we got kick out of our table in the bar so regulars can claim the spots. Incomparable rude service.

Amazing!

by phoenixrisingftm

St. Cloud's far exceeded expectations (which were high to begin with).

The pumpkin ravioli appetizer was amazingly flavorful. Our meals included: Penne in a sundried tomato pesto sauce (which you can order as a vegetarian meal or with chicken and pancetta), Parmigiano-Crusted Pork Tenderloin, and Mediterranean Chicken. Each meal was flavorful and colorful- with the meats tender and moist. And the sweet potato burbon pecan pie was the perfect ending to this delicious meal.

Also check out their margaritas- absolutely the best I've had anywhere in Seattle!

The Secret Place

by geoffreyriley

St. Clouds is my first destination when I take friends to brunch or dinner. The staff takes care of me and my guests as if we are family.

Not once I have regretted taking my friends and family here. The people that I have brought to St. Clouds are ALWAYS please and cannot wait to return.

I promise you will fall in love with the owner and the staff! And of course the food!

Pros: Great Staff, Excellent Service, Home cooked Food

Cons: , None, None

Loved their hashbrowns and veggie omelet. The waiter was fairly attentive, and provided friendly tidbits. Environment was cozy, very clean and mellow in the late morning. I will be going back.

Pros: Not crowded, Good food, Friendly service

Great neighborhood restaurant!

by cripken

My wife and I have loved this place since it opened. We have never had anything but good food and very friendly service. The prices are really great. Specials are kinda pricey, but the ones I have had have been really good and worth it.

We go for breakfast with our two young toddler twins and they have been really accomodating and super-nice.

When we go for dinner, it is just the two of us on a date. The menu is small, but covers a broad range. I usually go for the fish special and haven't been disappointed.

The bar area is small, but also nice with a very friendly bartender. They have live music on the weekends that ranges from not bad to excellent.

Pros: Great people, high-quality food, good value

Cons: Small menu

We give up!

by sweetbug

We have just been to St. Cloud's for the 4th and final time. To say the service is the worst in town is an understatement. Literally the only time we've received even remotely good service was one Sat. am when we were the ONLY people in the whole restauraunt. We've tried to make this place work for us because it's so close to home, but it's not worth it. Plus, the menu is boring and predictable, but even that would be ok if the service wasn't so horrendous.

Cons: terrible service, boring food

Reviewers-ignite

by shethars

Odd recent reviews-- ice cream, nice steak...come on you reviwing guys, this is insulting to the people who work at St. Clouds day-to-day. Compliment the special, talk about John's nice use of herbs and complimentary flavors in his entrees, not the stuff you and I can hack out in our own kitchens. The lounge has a character for a bartender and the music is better than the mishmash you hear at the average neighborhood venue. If you think it's an 8 relative to other establishments, tell why its different and better. Me, the brunch kicks ass in both quality and value, dinners assumedly are great as well, but I work at night and have missed the opportunity.

Pros: Food, Decor, Good value

Cons: nada

St. Clouds serves basic food prepared in a not-so-basic manner. The ambience and service are wonderful.

Always good

by allisonaustin_citysearch

This place is actually a favorite of my parents, but I've been many times and have enjoyed myself. It's a good place for dates---sometimes there's a band, but the quaint bar is conducive to meeting new people from around the neighborhood.
