Went to The Belmont expecting to have a pleasant lunch in charming Port Townsend. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed. My friend ordered Crab Louie, which turned out to be a scoop of lump crab on a bed of lettuce. The crab was riddled with small pieces of crab shell. When she pointed this out to the waitress, she was simply told "ok - order something else". Rather than look through the menu again, she asked for the Dover Sole, which I had ordered and was not too bad. Her Sole came immediately and it became clear why - it wasn't cooked! The crab stuffing was still cold/frozen and the sole itself was raw! Again, we called the waitress and again, she just said "ok - I'll take it back". By this time, my friend had completely lost her appetite and decided not to try her luck at another order. The manager happened to walk by and we explained the situation to him. He said they didn't shell their own crab, but he'd mention it to their supplier - no apology at all. When told about being served raw sole, he said he'd talk to the cook - again, no apology, though he did say we wouldn't be charged for my friend's meal.

Prior to ordering I'd asked how big the Blue Cheese Lovers Salad was. When it was described to me, I said it was too big and declined to order it. The waitress said they could make it half-sized for me, so I decided to take her up on that offer. When the bill was presented, she had charged me full-price for the salad. When I asked her about it, she said she'd forgotten and went off to adjust the bill. When she returned, she said they weren't able to make a half-size salad and what I had been served was the full size and they wouldn't adjust the bill. Generally, if you order something and it's not available, you'll be told that and offered another choice. In this case, I wasn't told a half-size salad wouldn't be available and the salad I was served did appear to be half-sized. At any rate, given how management had not taken responsibility for the bad food my friend was served, or even apologized, I decided just to pay the bill, rather than argue with them over it.

Overall - this was the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. I would definitely not recommend this restaurant at all!

Inside one of the many Victorian buildings of downtown Port Townsend is a fabulous and popular restaurant. The Belmont serves exceptional food, has fantastic services, and at a great price. You can sit at one of the many indoor waterfront tables or up in the loft at the bar. I would highly recommend this restaurant to any PT visitor or resident.

We had a large and wonderful meal at Fin?s for lunch so only wanted something light for dinner. We went to the Fountain Cafe but it was packed and had a waiting list. My husband is not much of a waiter so we sought repast elsewhere and ended up at the Belmont. This one was empty, except for a couple of elderly tourist. The ambiance was great. It?s an old hotel built in 1885 and beautifully appointed and very romantic. The service was excellent. The food was another matter. We were enticed by the appetizer special of Alaskan king crab legs for $14.95 a pound (down from the regular price of $22.95 a pound) which could be ordered hot or cold. These were obviously frozen and had been steamed on order to warm them. Unfortunately, they were not steamed evenly and some were still cold and icy in the middle. For frozen crab legs the taste was fine. I had the Belmont Salad and hubby had the Blue Cheese Lover?s salad. These were simple but quite good, especially the latter. It had three excellent blue cheeses and both had delightful homemade dressing perfectly suited for their respective salads. We had been further enticed by the waiters description of one of the specials ? fresh halibut stuffed with brie and crab. We should have stopped at the salads. The halibut was undercooked and mushy and it was topped with a cream sauce made from marinated artichokes. This did not compliment the dish at all. The wine list was sufficient and we had a very nice Pinot Gris. Next time we wait at the Fountain.

Historic Port Townsend is not a culinary destination, but this spot is one of the better choices for lunch and dinner. With views of the water and an inviting atmosphere, the authentic 1880's saloon serves American classics such as clam…
