The food is very good and it is reasonably priced, but the rewards program is what keeps me coming back to M&S. I will be the first to admit that they are not breaking any culinary ground, and you probably wont catch a foodie in here

I took my wife out for our anniversary dinner to the M&S on Lake Union yesterday evening. It started out great, with a personalized menu that said "Happy Anniversary" and ended with an unexpected treat for dessert. But that's about all that went right.

Waiter: Our waiter was pleasant and welcomed us, but left our table without introducing himself by name - I had to ask. He impressed me as someone with the personality of a subdued Eor (from Winnie the Pooh). He strongly advised us NOT to order an item we were considering. If he can't promote it, why is it even on the menu?

Bread: Excellent organic sourdough french bread came with the meal along with creamed soft butter, and turned out to be one of the best things we had (5 stars)

Appetizer: We ordered the crab, shrimp, and artichoke dip. It was OK, but was also on the salty side. (2 stars)

Soup: Crab Bisque. My wife ordered a cup, and I ordered a bowl. In the center of her cup and my bowl was the same size portion (I would say 3-4 ounces) of what looked like crab meat, except it turns out upon closer inspection that 80% of it was actually white rice. So we got maybe a tablespoon of actual crab each. This kind of deception is REALLY bad. The bisque tasted OK, but was not particularly impressive. TIP: If you order this, go for the cup - you don't get more crab with the bowl-sized serving. (1 star for portion size, 3 stars for taste, -9 for deception)

Dinner 1: My wife ordered the House Smoked Salmon with Angel Hair noodles, porcini mushrooms and capers. On a scale of 1-10, the level of salt was a 12 and was incredibly overwhelming (4 stars for portion size (if you can stomach it) and 0 stars for taste)

Dinner 2: I ordered the Razor clams (they came with rather bland string beans). The serving portion was good, and they were cooked and prepared well except for one very important detail: the clams were not only NOT fresh, but had reached the tipping point where they should not have been served at all. I could have gone to Pikes Place market and taken some home and done better. I refused to eat them. And the lemon wedge that came my my meal was so small it only covered half the portion (5 stars for portion size and 0 stars for taste)

So much for our main entrees.

When we got the bill, they charged us $6 more than the price posted on their menu for the salty salmon dinner. We showed this to the waiter and he took off perplexed. Sure enough, a few minutes later the Operations Manager came to our table with apologies and presented us with an adjusted bill and did not charge us for our main entrees. Which was only as it should be.

SUMMARY:

These folks do not pay attention to detail, either with their food or their billing. And, they engage in deception with the crab-laced rice portions in their crab bisque. They seem to have no shame. We came (and paid) for crab, not rice.

SERVICE: Slow and steady.
DRINKS: OK
FOOD: YIKES! Deliberate deception on the amount of rice sprinkled crab, Dish 1 (Salmon) was Extremely salty, Dish 2 (razor clams) should never have been put on my plate 'cause it was too old.
PRICE: on the high side (could be even higher, if you don't check your bill...)
Management: Made the bill right and were nice about it, explaining that they change up their menu all the time and sometimes they miss stuff. Like that should have made me feel better. I know no one's perfect but hey - you gotta make SURE that kind of stuff doesn't get missed, I'm sorry. And making sure the food is fresh should be close to job #1 - and if it's not fresh, it shouldn't be served. I would much rather we both went home without wondering if we were going to be able to hold down the food we ate...

I've been to M&S restaraunts elsewhere, and fared much better. Someone needs to take away the sodium jar from these guys, 'cause they waaaaaay over use it.

i don' t get why people don't like mccormick's happy hour. how can you beat $2, $4 and $5 items... i would have to say the burger is the best. and they even have desserts for $4. I usually just get a coke (need to get a drink to get the happy hour price) cuz it cuts the cost down (no happy hour drink specials, but i just want the food anyways) and they always change their menu every once in a while, i luv the fresh oysters(when its in season) or the halibut collar. yum...so good

Food specials are good but drinks way overpriced. Service is top notch and the atmosphere is good. Don't know if it was really worth the $50 tab for a couple of drinks and appitizers.

Well, the rants must have had an effect! Even with a few negative reviews, I made reservations here for my husband and I for dinner before an event at Benaroya. Even though we were a half hour late (traffic and rain), and it was only an hour before the event, we were seated right away and our waiter brought drinks, salad, and entree, even dessert, promptly. He was professional, courteous, and made helpful recommendations. A manager stopped by our table to ask about our meal. The dinner was very good, the martinis were icy cold, and the service was the old-fashioned, professional kind that you only see at the very best restaurants. It's not trendy, and the beautiful people don't hang out here, but you really can't go wrong for a lovely meal and great service.

Cons: ambience is businesslike, dark

I recently reserved the private dining room for my husband's 50th birthday. We had a party of 16 mostly family and a few close friends. Eric, the General Manager, helped me set up the menu in advance and made wonderful recommendations that allowed choices for salads and entrees. Before my husband and I arrived for the "surprise", the staff took care of my guests and did everything they could to make sure our group was ready. The food was wonderful and our wait staff was attentive, but not intrusive. I couldn't have been happier and everyone in our party enjoyed the food and the whole evening!

Happy hour is great for the different food specials. No deals on drinks though. During the day, the restaurant is upscale, sophisticated, but pricey. Still for happy hour, it's a great place to come!

PROS: Awesome happy hour!!

this restaurant is a very suitable place for celebrating graduations, weddings, or other private parties. the seafood is the greatest ever. each of the salmon courses is the best courses that i have ever tasted in my whole life of eating out. and i know my boyfriend olin really enjoyed his lambchops. just scrumptuous. the wine list has such a great selection. i can order any of the wine, and it would be suitable to my tastebuds.

I went to McCormick & Schmick's yesterday and I have to say that I am completely dissatisfied. For a $100 dinner for two I did not expect the waiter showing up for 2 seconds at a time. The waiter literally walked by our table a total of 4 times during our 3 course dinner and stopped to see how we were doing just once. The lady who was supposed to refill our waters almost knocked my head off with the tin water container. The food was just OK. Even after I asked for waiters recommendations my fish was breaded and greasy.

One of my girlfriends and I went here to treat ourselves to a nice evening out - splurge a bit. It's a good thing that's what we had in mind, because not only were the portions paltry, the service was ridiculous. It's not M&S's fault that we were seated behind a bunch of turtleneck-and-sweatshirt-set - wearing tourists from Wisconsin who insisted upon snapping pictures every five minutes. It IS their fault that our (reserved) table wasn't ready when we arrived (on time, thanks). We had appetizers, entrees (and then oysters, because the portions were, as previously stated, virtually anemic), and we waited (seriously) at least HALF AN HOUR before getting each thing. Our server was sweet as pie, but who is running this place?! I promise - for those prices and that experience, we won't be returning.

I had not been to M&S for several years. My last experience was not bad, but not outstanding. On a recent Friday night, I wandered in with a group of colleagues from out-of-town, looking for somewhere to eat a Northwest-flavored meal without a reservation. Despite being full, the very friendly and accommodating hostess spoke to the manager and the staff quickly set up the private dining room to accomodate us. The service and food were both top-notch, and our group had a wonderful time. We were treated as if we were VIPs, and we noticed that others in the restaurant also seemed to be having a great time and enjoying their experience. The restaurant even split a meal for two of us, without charging extra. McCormick & Schmick's is a great value and a great time. I'll be returning much sooner this time!!

Warning...when visiting McCormick's for happy hour, don't expect any drink specials. They don't offer any. How they continue to receive hype about their "Best Happy Hour" seems to be a joke as far as I'm concerned. They should win the award for "Best Burger for under $2". That is pretty much the only thing their so-called happy hour has going for it. The service sucks in the bar. Every time I go for happy hour, they make me feel like I'm cheap and trying to take advantage of them. My advice is this: Be cheap and take advantage of them by ordering the Burger and a Beer, then leave.

I am firm believer in giving someone a second chance. After a highly disappointing dinner, I phoned the manager to tell him of our experience. We were seated an hour late for our reservations, bread was never delivered to our table, my fish was room temperature, my husband's steak was marginal at best and to top it off, we had a "lovely" table right next to the kitchen where you could see the overflowing garbage cans and disgusting floor littered with kale and other food scraps. The manager said what any good customer-driven company should have said "we're sorry and we want to make it right for your next visit". Unfortunately for them, it is now going on 4 weeks since that phone call and I have not heard a word from them. They have blown their 2nd chance to make me a happy customer.

They have great burgers, fish-n-chips, and meat loaf. The people and clientel are honest. I lost my wallet there and it was returned w/everything in it. They were even prompt in calling me w/in half hr after I left the place.

The food is ok but overpriced for how uninspired the prep and presentation are. The decor is smokey old-school Seattle fish house. The service seems to largely depend on which server you get - in other words a few seem to care and the rest are just doing a job. The female servers seem at least a little interested in the service. The men seem either too young to know much yet or older and bored.

For the price go to Etta's or the Flying Fish.

The decor and ambience are wonderful; wood paneling and the scale of the place set your expectations high. The staff is very professional. The food, however, is merely adequate, less so when you consider the price.

Only once can you taste cooked salmon for the first time. I will forever be grateful that my first time was at McCormick & Schmick's - I had backed salmon in a garlic butter creme sauce stuffed with dungeoness crab and shrimp. I actually felt high from the experience. The ambiance and service are good, straight-forward. Exactly what one might expect from a downtown restaurant.

One of the best Happy Hours around. You can get a beer a burger for dirt cheap. Conveniently located downtown for the business crowd. Get there early otherwise it will be tough to find a seat.
