Puppy Mill Pet Store

by Laurel W.

Smokey Point Pets has an "agent" who purchases the puppies for the store. When asked, staff will tell you their "agent" routinely inspects all breeders whom 'he' purchases from and if they are found to be puppy mills, he ceases to do business with them. I can't fault the girls working in the store... they have been sweet each time I have had contact with them & seem to care for the animals within' the means their store manager allows them to. / I purchased a wee puppy from SMP's and this pup was so tiny he didn't even weigh in at a pound. The "quality breeder" from whom this dog came, over-vaccinated my dog to the point the shots cancelled themselves out they were given so closely together. My vet was unable to give the next series of vaccs required due to fears of my pup dying from poisining! I had to keep my pup indoors (which I would have anyway), not allow him on the grass to go potty or take him in public for 4 weeks just so his system could get stronger. To make matters worse, my little pup came with a terrible case of kennel cough and eye infection which was conveniently passed on to my 1 year old dog at home. I had TWO sick dogs, TWO vets bills and the concern that my puppy wouldn't make it he was so sick. / I often visited SMP's to see the new shipments of pups, which came in every Tues after 5 pm. It broke my heart to see them all, but I visited the store more to check on the pups. People would flood the store on Tues's to see the new faces in the window. Most brought along their broods of ill-behaved children requesting to hold a puppy. The staff would pass the puppies out like candy which was so sad to see!! Parents were busy holding a pup while their children would take another pup, only to usually drop it or pull on a leg causing the pup to yelp in pain. It was the saddest thing ever to see. I dont' know why I kept going in - I guess I just wanted to say a little prayer for each pup & step in if someone did something really awful. (I'm sure I'd have been hauled off to jail had I stepped in!!) The worst part was that these pups had just been a plane from the Midwest, put in crates inside the store van for the journey from SeaTac to Smky Point, stuff in the cages behind the window only to be grabbed on to to by non-stop crowds of people just wanting a puppy fix. No thought or concerns from ANYONE were ever given to these poor puppies and the trauma they'd just gone through. / I witnessed several pups with open woulds to their faces from being caged with a larger more aggressive pup. The wounds would not heel & when I would mention to the staff, their reply: "oh yea... they keep playing together & scratching each other" I guess the blood running from above the one pups eye wasn't a big enough clue to move the poor thing to a cage with a calmer dog, or by itself. / Remember folks - local breeder RENEE ROSKEE claimed she was a reputable dog breeder too and look @ the horrid, unthinkable, inhumane conditions she kept her puppies in. The breeders this store purchased from are no different.

High Vet Bills

by K W.

My husband and I were a little leery of getting a dog from a pet store but on a limb found one we both liked. Unfortunately it's been nothing but an awful experience. The dog ended up extremely sick with coccidia, giardia, and a viral infection!! Bringing this dog into my home also infected my healthy 3yr old dog. After talking with the vet, these dogs are definitely getting their shots way too young and are not being properly cared for by Smokey Point Pets. I would conquer with others, that they do get their dogs from puppy mills. Don't support pet stores by paying them for having bad practices. All puppies are cute, and a healthy one that is going to live past it's first year is even cuter. Find a local, reputable breeder and get your pet from there.

Smokey Point Pets does not care about animals

by Brittany B.

I bought a kitten from smokey point pets who they said was perfectly healthy. Not only did she still have fleas, Less than twenty four hours after my kitten started vomitting and could no longer hold down fluids of any kind, the only option was surgery and the owner said that they would reemburse the cost off the kitten but wouldn't cough up a dime after that. The owner tried to tell me that the vet was scaming me (a vet I've gone to for over 5 years and he says Smokey point pets was hit or miss for a pet) and basically to EUTHANIZE my kitten. They don't care about the animals they sell, the place is filthy, smelly, and overall inhumane.

Never had a problem at this store- I love my dogs!

by Amanda P.

Both of my dogs, one 2 years old and one 3 years old, came from this store. Both are happy, healthy and very well behaved dogs. More then that, my parents and 2 of my freinds have purchased dogs from this store (one of them just a couple months ago). They are as happy and healthy as my dogs. My dogs came home with their vaccines given too early too, but my vet said that it just meant that the FIRST vaccine was invalid. All I needed was one more shot for each dog. Not only that, but I gave the vaccine myself. - I just purchased them at the co-op for $5 each. I don't know what vet that one reviewer took her dog to, but it does not cost $100 to get a series of vaccines. You got ripped off. My Westie had some parasite, but the pet store reimbursed me for the money I spent on medication. I continue to purchase my dog food and supplies at this store (support your local businesses!) and I have nothing but great things to say about their customer service. I am always greeted by a "hello" and a smile.
Also, I had another dog that I purchased from a breeder. He only had his FIRST shot, plus he got pneumonia and his breeder told me "If he dies you can have another puppy". I did NOT get reimbursed for any medication or anything. I spent $500 on him, plus $300 in vet bills. Just because it is a local breeder doesn't mean ANYTHING! He ended up passing away due to unrelated causes, but I was far happier with my service from the pet store then I was with the breeder.

Puppy Mills - DON'T BUY HERE!!!

by Jackie S.

This place gets their puppies from a broker in the midwest. That is the FIRST sign that they are getting their puppies from puppy mills. You will undoubtedly get a puppy that has experienced trauma and whose mother was in deplorable conditions. The dog might have developed behavioral issues or inherited health issues, don't spend money supporting this careless business. Many puppies come in sick and some even die (but why would they tell you that)?!
If this place were responsible they would be helping you find local breeders who can show you the mother or father before you buy. Do your research and dont be dooped into feeling guilty that you are not buying a puppy. These places need to feel the burn for being so irresponsible. If the owner loved animals, she wouldn't do what she's doing.
Contact a local breeder if you MUST have a purebred and do your research. There are plenty of responsible breeders out there. If you don't need a purebred or want an adult, go to a shelter or purebred rescue! So many dogs need homes!

Don't support this business!

by Tom G.

Two couples I know have purchased puppies from this store and both were extremely sick within the first two day and one of the pups even died after a week. The staff will say what you want to hear.

PUPPY MILL!!

by Kriss S.

Just bought a beautiful boston terrier from Smokey Point Pets. She was just too cute but the sales lady did put a lot of pressure on us and it felt like she was just saying what we wanted to hear. After some investigating and reading some of the reviews of this place I too found that my puppy had been given her shots WAY too early. In fact, they had caused her to become sick. I rushed her to the vet before the "2 days" was up only to find a host of problems with our new addition. I believe this pet store DOES engage is backwards, possibly illegal sales tactics and I will investigate further and see to it no one else gets dooped. OH YES MY LAWYER WILL BE IN TOUCH!!

Puppy Mill Puppies

by Melanie L.

For the last two years I have been a foster parent for a local rescue group. We get a lot of dogs right off the euthanization table but also many from puppy mills. So the owner decides they want out and sell all of their breeders. very sad some females are pregnant and have had no care themselves there for leaving the puppies even more vulnerable. Often times the breeders have never been touched or loved by humans, are very unsocial, scared and in one case obviously beaten. Many have to have their teeth removed due to lack of correct nutrients etc and these are the parents to those cute little puppies that are being sold. Learn more about the condition of the puppies before you buy them and educate the owners of these stores

Unfortunately I buy from Smokey point

by Mandy J.

My mother and I have and do buy from Smokey Point Pet store, and my mother and I have been in the breeder business. And I must say the employees are NOT THAT educated on breeds or training a puppy. I visit the store often just for the enjoyment to play with puppies and continually listen to the employees SAY THE THINGS a potential puppy buyer wants to hear. And I do believe truly that they get their puppies from a puppy mill. But in all honesty, it is hard to not fall for the big ears and big eyes.

love my puupy

by annonomius a.

I just recently purchased a puppy from the smokey point pet store. He is a perfectly healthy boy. The staff was very knowledgeable and were able to answer all of my questions unlike other stores we have gone to. They never tried to pressure me to get the dog and really helped me to be prepared to take him home. They were all excited about him getting a home a they were looking forward to me bringing him back so they can see him grow.

Guilty for supporting this pet store.....

by Sara W.

I went in for dog food and left with a adorable new dog. I was uneducated before this purchase. I want to caution anyone buying from a pet store or the Internet. DON'T DO IT! This pet store is what I believe to support puppy mills. After getting home I went through the papers, I was given upon purchase. He even came with a fake Certificate of Pedigree indicating that he was registered under the American pet registry,(http://www.ahkennel.net/beware.htm). I had to redo his vaccinations, he had parasites, and kennel cough. He was from the Midwest which is saturated with puppy mills. I love he has a good home...hate that the $ I paid could support another litter of puppies who's parents are not valued. It is so sad to me. I urge you to get educated. A veterinary office is a great place to go if you are looking for a new dog. They can lead you in the right direction.

Smokey Point Pets SCAMS!!!

by Brittany A.

I recently purchased a puppy from this store, She was nine weeks old at the time. We were assured that our new beagle was completely up to date on her vaccinations which as it turns out is not the truth. After speaking with several vets we had learned that our puppy was vaccinated to early. She had been given her shots at 5,6 and 7weeks old, to our amazement the vets told us that until the puppy is eight weeks old she lacks the ability to produce antibodies and she is still susceptible to the diseases she had been vaccinated for. We purchased our puppy for five hundred, we have now had her for two weeks and have spent a total of one hundred dollars at our vet clinic on vaccinations we never should have had to pay for. Not to mention we are not done paying for her vaccinations. She still needs to recieve another booster. I spoke with the pet store and they assured me that the vet clinic was trying to scam us. We bought our puppy with the intentions of her being in the family for many years to come. If we had gone off the knowledge the pet store had given us we would never had her vaccinated and she would of been susceptible to parvo and distemper. I would never recommend purchasing a pet from this store without researching what your buying.

Vaccinated Pets misleading

by Jeanette H.

Do the records meet vet standards? Not here.

My experience was severely disappointing at best. I purchased a puppy from this establishment, a little Yorkie, she was sold as "having had all of her shots", and sure enough the vaccination record was readily handed over at the time of purchase. I took her to the vet for a wellness check and was advised that in fact this was not a puppy vaccinated to prevent illness. However, as we all know it does drive up retail price...hmmm! Per two very large vet clinics I was informed that she was vaccinated at far to young of an age and consequently her immune system not only absorbed the vaccination but due to the fragile age at which she was vaccinated her immune system was in fact, compromised. The second of the three shots was also ineffective as it was given to quickly too the first shot. Even if they had vaccinated at an appropriate age the second shot would have been of no assistance to her either. My overall opinion of this store would be a puppy mill. They turn over a lot of pups, reach out to a lot of breeders and lets face it folks...the more puppies sold the more money for the owner of the store and the breeder. However, you will bare the cost. If you have had similar experiences here, please take the time to blog on the matter. I was advised by the owner that there will be no reimbursement for the shots as not enough people have commented on this. I would suspect it is due to the puppy purchase agreement that only allows 2 bus days to discover an illness, which we all know will not crop up that quickly...I wonder how many folks paid extra for shots, ended up with sick or even lost puppies that were purchased in this manner, or even at this establishment. Pet stores need to be educated in the proper schedule for vaccinating puppies. It will not happen unless more people communicate publicly concerning this matter. Knowledge is power. Please lend a voice.

Gorgeous Puppies!

by Anonymous

Very happy, healthy puppies are available in this bright, kid-friendly environment. There is a large, comfortable seating area where people can relax with the puppies and actually play with them. The store is clean. There is a very friendly and knowledgable staff, with the owner present and available for assistance. Excellent Pet Store!
