I read the reviews as to how great this place was so I went cuz I am a HUGE fan of Thai food. The food is good but it would be way way way better without all the sugar the dump in it. Thai food does incorporate a little palm sugar in many

This was my first Thai place back in 1999 and it was the best. As far as I know Tom doesn't cook any longer. Quality of food has also declined along with the service. I am to go there tomorrow and meet up with the friend who introduced

I absolutely love this place. I fell in love with it the first time I ever ate here. One time I ordered 5 Stars, and after placing 1 carrot shred in my mouth my eyes were watering!! But it was still so good!!

I am a huge fan of Thai food and I've been to dozens of Thai restaurants in the city. Thai Tom used to be my favorite but I had to give it up. The panang curry and phad thai were super good and I really wouldn't go above two stars unless you're a masochist. However, every time after I ate there, I would get stomach aches and wouldn't feel good at all. Then I read on the Seattle website that posts sanitary reviews of all restaurants that Thai Tom has almost been shut down several times for violations including food kept out for days, not washing hands and multiple insect sightings. This definitely will not ease my stomach.

Thai Tom I love you but I had to give you up.

Thai Tom I love you but I had to give you up.

Pros: Great tasting, spicy, cheap, flavorful

Cons: Sanitary, stomach hurts

I've been to Thai Tom twice, and it's great but when I ask myself how much I'd like it if it weren't for the long wait, I think it would be just slightly above average. People tend to follow the herd, whatever's popular, and if you inconvenience yourself to wait, you have to justify that to yourself if you don't want to feel like an idiot, so I think people over-estimate how good the food actually is.

Pros: Unique, popular, good food

Cons: 20+ minute wait

.

As an UW alumnus I've eaten at Thai Tom many times. For a student it was cheap and delicious food. I loved sitting at the counter wrapped around the cooking area and watching the cooks send up huge flames. Most of the times the food was fine. You go in, get seated, and get out within 30 minutes.

For those people/reviewers that said the wait is long...did you not see the restaurant only has enough seating for 20 something people?? It's not their fault you have to wait for a long time. They can't exactly kick out their seated customers to accommodate you. Unlike most restaurants at Thai Tom you can SEE exactly how many people are seated and estimate how long it would take.

Since college i've eaten Thai food at a few other countries including Thailand. The food at Thai Tom is not the BEST thai food. Any street vendor in Thailand will serve up a better tasting meal. Thai Tom tend to over spice and cook their food.

As for the service, I have to agree with most people that it sucks. There is really no excuse for it.

Recommendations:

-call in for take out
-ask for 2 stars (out of 5) or less (otherwise your food will be too spicy and kills other flavors)

Okay, I guess it was my lucky day when I went because: A. I didn't see one g**dam* crockroach. However I am vegan, and a crockroach wouldn't keep me from some fine vegan Thai food, since good, really good vegan food in restaurants if hard to come by.
B. I did not get the True Religion Jeans Server or the Pony Tail Stink-Eye Server. How many servers can this small place have. I only saw one, and she was awesome, smiled alot, helped me when I spilled ice water all over myself after someone buttknocked my table.
C. I only waited about 8 minutes. In retrospect, I would've easily waited 16 minutes. The heavy wooden WOODEN! menus were pretty awesome.

So, the food came in about 3.3456 minutes, since they took my order before I even was seated. I had Tofu in Green Curry. F*cking delicious. really delicious. Huge portion. I ate every last bit and if I wasn't with my friend I would've ordered another and sat there contentedly for half hour nibbling on it. Still no ro*ches ('case you didn't know, citysearch doesn't let you say r*aches. Though there was some questionable food substance in a white industrial bucket three inches from my knees. In fact, I want to go again right now.

This is the morning after Thai Tom and our stomaches are in pain.....

First off, I never really write reviews but I feel compelled this time around...

Waiter:

There is this tall long pony-tail m0f0 that works there. Never have I ever wanted to physically h i t a waiter. Jesus Christ, this guy makes service at your typical Chinese Restaurant seem 5 star. He can't really speak english, he rolls your eyes at you when he doesnt understsand. All the other waiters and staff are okay.. it's just this m0f0.. When you visit, you will know whom I am talking about.... no one paying for food deserves to be treated this way... he needs a good a$$ wh00ping

They really need to fire him...

Food:

The food has gotten worst over the few years I've visited this place. It seems like they empty out entire bottles of Soya and Fish sauce in every dish. Even when we said 1-star, our tongues were buring (and I can take heat!).

CrockRoaches:

Go into the bathroom and you shall find them...

Before I write this review, I read all the reviews that people posted in the past. I slowly realized that there is a famous waiter at this restaurant who I met today.

When I first looked at him, I thought he was a good looking guy and I was expecting a great customer service from him. You know what? I was totally wrong. Yes, I was wrong at all.

I called him to order my dish, and he yelled at me,
"I KNOW !! ". How a waiter can say this in front of people? But I didn't say anything because I really wanted to try their food since so many people visit here.

To be really honest, the food was just average and I don't understand why people visit this tiny and dirty restaurant to eat that kind of foods. I don't get it.

I didn't give him tips since I received very very unpleasant service and one waitress loudly said
YOU SHOULD PAY US TIPS !!!

she was almost crying to get the tips!!
What does tips mean to them? I really want to ask.

I went to this restaurant on sunday and the guy who serve wore TRUE RELIGION JEAN. Yelling at customers to get the tips was really rude.

It was a nightmare.
Please do not go there. You will see this bad guy who wear the TRUE RELIGION JEAN today and tomorrow and day after tomorrow......

Cons: Dirty, Bad customer service

.

They just do not know what customer service is.

They only expect the tips from their customers. Terrible terrible customer service that I have never experieced.

I don't know why people are waiting that long to eat at this restaurant. The food is not tasty at all. I feel so bad about this dining experience.

Just go any thai restaurants. I even smelled something weird and bad from the bottom of table. Not clean, bad attitude towards customers, and expect too much tips!!

PS. the waiter who served today wore true religion jean today and he was not kind at all. please do not think he is a good guy at the first impression. He is bad !!!!

Thai Tom = best most authentic (adjective
1 of undisputed origin; genuine : the letter is now accepted as an authentic document | authentic 14th-century furniture. See note at genuine .
? made or done in the traditional or original way, or in a way that faithfully resembles an original)
Just wanted to review the dictionary is really my favorite book to refer to. This place doesn't need to advertise, have fancy seating, or even take plastic. There's a reason why there's always a line out the door and people patiently wait to be seated to eat their favorite thai food: it's worth it. What are the best tacos you've ever had in your life..if you know anything your answer would be a taco truck in la, or really anywhere. why? because it's made by people who know how it's supposed to be cooked and served. Honestly I enjoy 5 star restaurants and buy designer clothes yet I prefer to eat authentic food mostly. It's just logical. Anyone who complains about thai tom should reconsider their logic hands down.

Pros: the best most authentic thai food in seattle

Cons: you sometimes wait for a table yet it's completely worth it.

I used to love this place. The thai food is the best on the Ave (University Way). There is VERY few seating, however, and it takes a long time to get a table. However, it's a nice scene being able to watch the chefs cook in front of you. On the other hand, despite the great food, it seems very unclean. My dish had a cockroach crawling on the plate, and after that I never could make myself go back. However, if you don't mind that, it has AMAZING food.

Thai Tom is arguably some of the best Thai food in University District. With about five or six choices on University Way, it's hard to know which one to go for. Thai Tom is a really small place, so you should try and go during non-peak meal hours, because it is often crowded. But the food is awesome. I highly recommend the Panang curry, and be careful of the stars! It gets spicy! Not only that, but most entrees are around five to six bucks, so it's cheap. And you get tons of food. But my favorite aspect is seeing the man who I imagine to be Thai Tom himself, a tiny Thai man with sticks for legs in front of a wall of fire with intense focus making all the food all right in front of the bar seating. It's a fun place.

After 4 years of dodging the line that spills out the door of this hole-in-the-wall, today I finally sucked it up and tried it out for the first time. I don't know what "bad service" people are complaining about. Look around! I've only seen restaurants this busy in Manhattan.
I got to sit at the counter and watch the cook work his magic. So entertaining! He talked to me several times and offered suggestions for my next visit (there will be many I'm sure). 4 stars was perfect for my spice lovin palate. love love loved it!

Their service is notorious as you can find. The food is merely ordinary Thai, but the service is far beyond nightmare.
Tonight , we were seated and had been waiting for long to order our meal. The waitresses always look busy and ignore you. Somewhat they finally calculated precise and yelled for the tips at us,
" Next time, you take to go."
" This is not tip, this is shame."
How ridiculous can it be. I havent have that experience before in the US. Damn terrible!

I've seen reviews on this for bad food and service. This is craziness. You have to go there for what it is. Its the semi-secret greasy spoon of Thai restaurants. Its small and dark, you always have to wait. The place already has more employees than the space can handle. Those that are there are running about breathlessly. And if you can't manage to grab one, its not because they aren't walking by every thirty seconds. Its an experience, a theater of cooking. The food is prepared at a stove that is in the center of the restaurant. About 4-5 dishes are going simultaneously. Ingredients fly into the pans, sauces come to the chef's hands as though he were using jedi powers. If the food tasted bad, the show would be well worth the price of admission. But as it is, the trip to Seattle must always include Thai Tom's. (we hail from Saint Paul, MN) For Thai, this tops the considerable experience we have with Asian food. Bravo! The Red Curry was very excellent tonight, and every meal I have tried there was tasty and quick, generally about 20% less than it costs elsewhere. I just can't say enough about it. I would tell people to ignore any rating under a four on this joint. I'd give it a 5 each of the 4 or 5 times I've been there.

But George has very spicy hand his 5 stars ooh hell hot dont try problably he make most spicy food in town .The service is not really good but you must not care if you really like good -fresh food right in front

I don't like waiting, but I was not disappointed that I did. It was the best Thai food I've ever had! I wish I didn't have to get cash out beforehand and I wish the rice didn't cost so much, but whatever. I liked watching my food being cooked in front of me and I loved leaving there smelling like Thai food. The leftovers were amazing the next day.

The rave reviews are accurate, the food here is great. The resturant itself however, is extremly small. The chairs are really wierd and feel like they are ready to break. Deffinetly not the place to take a big group or if you want to be comfortable while eating. This should be on your short list of top take out Thai for sure.

Try the Garlic and Peper chicken, it is really fresh and well flavored, with a great mixture of vegatables to accomidate the grilled chicken pieces (technical stir fried, but no battered like some garlic thai chickens, really great).

I had heard about this place (as being the best and cheapest Thai in the U-District) and decided to check it out last night with a friend. We went around 630pm and were seated immediately at the bar. The chef was friendly and asked us exactly how we wanted our food prepared, making it perfectly spicy. Although the place was packed, our food was ready within 10-15 minutes and brought steaming to the table. The staff was very nice and helped us with the menu, since it was our first time being there. The food was absolutely delicous, with fresh veggies and meat. And after all of that, my bill was around $8. I will definitely be going back there--don't listen to the bad reviews! This place is worth any wait.

After reading all of the terrible comments on city search I almost didn't go to Thai Tom. I'm so happy that I did! It is a super small place but it has so much charm. It had amazing food and was such a fun atmosphere. We had both the red and the yellow curry and they were both awesome. The music was good and the server was friendly. They were busy so she wasn't the most talkative server I have had, but it was great. I would recommend this place to any friends and I will be going back!

was horrid like really, really bad chinese food even smelled like that. Nasty oil taste on everything. Worst Thai in Seattle! This was nasty, I don't see how it could get worse. Usually bad Thai food is just not great, but edible, this was horrid. Nasty re-used oil for months maybe? AVOID this hole!

I've been to Thai Tom 5-6 times in the past, and always liked their food. But I am not going there ever again due to the service I received tonight. This is what happened:

I ordered a dish that turned out to be really salty, but thought that I'll just let it go this time and ask for more rice.

When we got the receipt, the total was wrong by $2 more dollars. We figured that the servant prolly charged us for the rice (which costs $1 as stated on the menu), but take that into consideration, the total is still wrong by $1. This is our conversation with the servant thereafter:

Me: Sorry sir, I'm just wondering if you charged us for the rice?

Servant: Yeah I did

Me: Well, I don't think we should be charged for the rice, my dish was really really salty (pointed to the dish, it was very black...), I just wanted some more rice to go along with it

Servant: What?! it's like that..blah blah blah...(turned to the chef and spoke in Thai language very loudly)

Chef: You know what??? you don't like it?! 99% of the people like it!!!

[some arguement here, I was very mad at this point]

Me: OK fine, even if you charge us for the rice, it's $1 as listed on the menu, but the total is off by $2

Servant: No!! It's $2!!

Me: The menu says $1!

Servant: We changed the price long time ago!! The price on the menu is wrong!!!

Me: What?! shouldn't we expect to pay as according to what's on the menu?!

We argued for the next 5 minutes, with the sevant pointing his fingers 3 inches in front of my face and cursing at me. I certainly did not pay that extra $1.

I'm the type of person who cannot stand rstaurants delivering this type of service and still make money. If you are like me, please do me a favor and stop letting Thai Tom earn our money. If you really want Thai food on the Ave, try Little Thai, Thaiger Room, or Thai 65. Their food is just as nice as Thai Tom.

I have only eaten at this restaurant once or twice. When I first came to seattle I asked some of the locals what the best place for Thai food was. Almost every person said it was Thai Tom. Wanting to see what the fuss was about, I got a friend and came for dinner. The wait is always horrible (I know because I see the line just driving by). They really need a new location with more seating. The portions are tiny. The noodles are always burnt. The chairs have NO BACK. It is so uncomfortable to be crammed in to this dive and sit on what feels like an overturned bucket. There are so many thai places better than this one for around the same price where you don't feel like a sardine. If you are looking for a place on the ave I recomment Thai 65.

Pros: cheap, good location

Cons: almost everything else: uncomfortable, not very good food, long wait

.

The food was alright, but that mostly came from the strong spices and sauces they used, which is too much after a while.

The service however is horrible, not only did we get none, but while waiting about 45 minutes for a food, the heating system was wholly in adequate while we shivered on our seats. The place was also dirty. The waitress was rude and gave us mean looks for no reason.

I have been going to this restaurant since it was with the original owner.

The restaurant recently sold and the new "owner" is running the business very poorly.

Tonight, we got there, the food was not prepared fresh. The food was taken from a counter and looked like it had been microwaved. Service is EXTREMELY BAD, the waiter who calls himself "the owner" (without anyone asking) will take napkins away from your table if he thinks you have too many. The quality of ingredients, service, food preparation, and restaurant conditions have taken a nose dive.

Even by Asia street vendor standards, this place is not clean. The group behind us waited 20 minutes, while others were seated before them until they got into a fight with "the owner".

In Short, the new owner has destroyed a great thai restaurant and I will not go back.

This place seems to be pretty popular. They do have some pretty good dishes but its not as good to me as everyone seems to rave about. I'm pretty particular about thai food since my mother is from Thailand. And I didn't quite get the "wow" factore. But nevertheless its still pretty good.

This is unbelievable, i actually never bother to write a review about restaurant but this time its a must! ok, i went there with a friend around 6pm to have a dinner together. as we entered the restaurant, the "guy" (i don't consider him a waiter) took us to the front table cross to the door. as i looked around, i saw 2 empty sits at the bar which i thought it would be fine for the two of us to sit there. as i sit at the bar, this unbelievable rude waiter "the guy" stopped me for being sitting at the bar. he says with his bad mood face and rude attitude that we can't sit at the bar. Okay... and i ask him why i can't sit on the bar? and for some reason he started to shout at us. he says "IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SIT HERE, JUST GO!!!" oookaayy... and i politely ask him why?? I'm a customer, why do you have to be soo angry? and he risen up his voice again. he says " I HAVE TO WORK!! I HAVE PEOPLE LINE UP! IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SIT, GOO!!!" he showed me his book list where there are 4 names on it, but as i looked around, there are no other customer line up in front and at the back of us, which mean it's just a lie. I can't stand his rude attitude, without any further talk, we leave that skunk. enough its enough, ill never go there again, well actually their foods are not so good at all, people goes there because it cheap! there are lots of better Thai food around town with a way better services and great Thai food. ow, one thing to remind you all before you go in there, this restaurant is soo small, the smokes from the kitchen will makes your hair and shirt smells. its hard to find a parking too! ps: hey owner, you better fire that skunk up! there are lots of good qualified waiters out there!

The food here is WAY overrated. It tasted exactly the same as all the other Thai restaurants in the U-district - good, but nothing special. To note, this place doesn't take special orders. I asked her to hold the eggs but "We cannot do that." Why, she didn't say.

That sums up the food but now let's talk about the service. AWFUL. For starters, as my friend and I first walked into the restaurant she shoved us out the door. "We busy; you wait 10 minutes." The place was clearly busy, so we tried not to think too much of it. Eventually, we were seated and we were served our food after 15 minutes. I picked up my chopsticks to find that they were a little wet. I wasn't sure if this was because they had just been washed or had just been used, so I felt a little uncomfortable using them. I walked over to the table covered in utensils and started to grab a pair of disposable chopsticks. Then the waiter ran over, took the chopsticks back, and said "Those are 50 cents." Fine... I went back to my table and used my wet chopsticks. Rarely having used chopsticks, I was having trouble eating my rice, so I walked back over to grab a plastic fork. I sat down and as I am between bites, the waitress literally grabbed the fork out of my hand saying "This for take-out," and violently placed a metal one on our table. My friend and I were shocked. Moments later, we noticed the pest problem on the wall beside us.

Being somewhat appalled by the waitress's attitude, we decided we didn't owe her a tip, especially since she wasn't even the one who served us. We paid our bill and left and after walking half-a-block away, the waitress ran up to us and DEMANDED her tip. "You supposed to leave tips." She argued with us for a good 25 seconds claiming that it was unlawful for us to not give her a tip. It was unbelievable. Looking back, I should have left a tip anyway, but there's no excuse for chasing down customers and demanding a tip.

My friend and I are NEVER eating here again.

This used to be one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the Seattle area until we encountered r oaches on the walls. We were seated at the farthest table away from the front door, ordered our dinner and proceeded to chow down. Not so long later the first r oach started to rub elbows with us on the wall so I smashed him with my paper napkin. Later on, another r oach appeared so at this which point we notified the waiter/server but it didn't even phase him. Then the third r oach appeared and...............three strikes your are out! We yelled out to the server, there are r oaches in this place. We requested a comp to off-set this unpleasant situation and all Thai Tom offered us was a Thai iced tea. Why would I want a freaking Thai iced tea when it is raining outside? Mr. Server refused to offer a discount on our food stating it would come out of his paycheck. Well guess what Mr. Server, did they reduce your paycheck for the chicken dish you mistakenly brought over to table. I think not. I reviewed the Seattle and King County Env. Dept. restaurant records on-line and I realized this restaurant has continually violated the County health guidelines. Maybe it will take the County shut down of Thai Tom doors before your violations have been corrected. I wonder if the real reason the food at Thai Tom has been so yummy is because tiny r oach bodies have been ground up within its food. What are you really eating? Thai Tom, get your act together and clean up those r oaches.

I have been going to Thai Tom's restaurant for many years. The food is cheap and pretty good. However, the service isn't consistent. It really depends on who is serving you. Sometimes they are friendly. But most of the time they are trying to rush you out and they can be blatantly rude. So if you go in expecting poor service, you'll be pleasantly surprised when they are actually nice.

I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO VISITING THAI TOM HAVING READ GREAT REVIEWS OF IT, WHAT A DISSAPPOINTMENT. I COULD NOT BELIEVE THERE WERE THAT MANY PEOPLE WAITTING OUTSIDE TO GET IN TO EAT. SO I THOUGHT IT MUST BE REALLY GOOD. I ORDERED GREEN CURRY W/TOFU AND VEGGIES. THE TOFU WAS DEEP FRIED SO MUCH YOU COULDNT EVEN RECOGNIZE WHAT IT WAS. IT WAS LIKE EATING RUBBER. THERE WAS NO COCONUT MILK AT ALL AND THE VEGGIES WERENT WORTH MENTIONING. THE SAUCE WAS A HEAVY PEANUT TYPE OF A MIXTURE. AND A SMALL SCOOP OF RICE. I LEFT 3/4 OF MY FOOD ON THE PLATE. I LEFT THERE HUNGRY. I'VE EATEN AT MANY THAI RESTAURANTS AND THIS WAS WAS THE WORST SO FAR. AS FOR THE SERVICE IT WAS OK. WAIT STAFF MADE YOU FEEL AS IF YOU WERE BOTHERING THEM WHEN REQUESTING MORE WATER.

Having went to UW, I have been to Thai Toms many times. Every time I order their Phad Thai. I also order a side of peanut sauce. Both are amazing! I usually get take out since their seating is extremely limited and it can take some time to get a seat and when you do, you are often sitting very close to a stranger. The food is great, but I would reccommend calling in your order for take out.

Thai Tom is my favorite spot for lunch in the U-dist. Sure, it's tiny and you might have to wait, but if that's going to be a problem you can always call ahead for takeout. I never have to wait more than 10 minutes to get in at lunchtime, and after you sit down the service is very quick. I've had several things on their menu and heartily enjoyed them all. George, the main chef, is fantastic. He is cooking everything on his own, juggling 3 or more hot pans at once, serving up hot, delicious thai food to the throngs of students who flock to the doors of Thai Tom.

I love this place, The food has never disappointed me. I love being able to sit at the counter and just watch the Cook juggle all those pans. He's a machine.

For the casual diner who is just out for some of the best Thai in Seattle, don't count on great service in this ultra small location. To go orders are the way to go. Tables are hard to get, and only seat two.

I've come to like Thai food quite a lot since I moved to Seattle and I've tried many different restaurants. My favorite Thai dish is Swimming Rama, and Thai Tom quite simply bIows the competition right out of the water. (Use of capital i in previous sentence to circumvent censor). The peanut sauce had an excellent texture and flavor- dark, rich, and with just the right amount of spice, and the rice was flavorful and well balanced by the chicken and spinach. I'm almost afraid that eating there will make it hard to eat my favorite Thai food anywhere else- it was that good. The environment is very busy and fast-paced because as fast as the staff works they just can't seem to keep up with the amount of people that want to eat there. There is a wait to get into the restaurant and then another wait to order, another wait to get your food. But it's worth it. If you need your food right away you can go to a fast food restaurant, and if you want a different type of service head somewhere a little less popular for it's size. But the price is cheap and the food is to die for, so you'll find that many people find it worth the while to get a taste.

As a starving student living in the trenches of the U-District, I know that good food does not have to come at a high cost. So when I?m craving Thai food, there?s only one place that comes to mind: Thai Tom?s.

Competing with dozens of other Thai restaurants on the Ave, Thai Tom?s reputation stands alone. Not only is it literally a hole-in-the wall, but it is a local favorite that keeps me coming back again and again? and again. And it?s not just me, Thai Tom?s usually has a line-up after 6, so be prepared to wait or call ahead for take out. And don?t forget to bring your cash, like most restaurants on the Ave they don?t take card.

What magic is it that keeps me coming back for more? It must be something in the spices. Thai Tom?s is the only restaurant that satisfies my need for something spicy. While you might not be able to endure my regular 8 star pad thai, 4-5 stars are more than enough to make the average person sweat. On a four burner stove affectionately emblazoned with the phrase ?Little Thai Express? the cooks work their magic with noodles and meat flying through the air from wok to wok, giving you a show as you wait for your order to come up.

Unlike other Thai restaurants that smother their noodles in sauce, Thai Tom?s are delightfully crisp and fried. All dishes come with a choice of meat and their Thai Iced Tea is a pleasant addition to cool down any meal.

One slight drawback is the lack of space in the restaurant, the seating is either at small tables or a long bar, either way, don?t expect much room to move. However, I feel this atmosphere heightens the intimate experience of dining at Thai Tom?s.

If you?re prepared to sacrifice some elbow room and wait time for a true eating experience, go to Thai Tom?s.

Remember the episode of the Soup Knotzi (real spelling ommitted by City Search) on Seinfeld? Perfect analogy!!! Everyone was scared to tick off the soup knotzi but there was a line out the door because the soup was so good. The same applies to Thai Tom. The place is small, cramped, and filled with thai-roma... not to mention the majority of the time there is a line outside the door because of its popularity. You go here for the food, period. If you're looking for great service go elsewhere, but if you want great Thai, it's worth the sacrifice. I docked 2 points because of the crappy service and the fact that they only accept cash but this place cannot be missed. I'm curious as to why people were complaining about them giving a side of rice with the Pad Thai and the fact that they give you chopsticks? Don't mind them and check it out!!!

Fantastic food. Quick preparation. Sit at the bar so you can see your food being prepared. Sit at the bar because you'll never get a table.
Seriously, the food is very authentic and always arrives hot and fresh but you will probably stand outside for 10 or 20 minutes waiting to be seated.

Pros: Great food

Cons: Little seating, cash only

When I walk into a restraunt to get some food, there are just a few things that I want: first, I want good food; second, I want service that shows me that I am important to their business, and that they value me as a customer. Thai Tom offers these things, and many more. The vary first time I walked into this small, but welcoming restraunt located on "The Ave" in Seattle's University District, I was a little taken by suprise at how small and intimate the setting was. At fisrt sight you will notice that you are not only going to be ordering food, and talking to your friend, but you are going to bear witness to a great show. The food is made not in the back where you wonder what's happening with your order, but right in front of you, so close that if you are lucky enough to get a seat at the end of the bar, you may just feel the heat from the flames that cook your food. Wether at a table, or sitting at the bar, you will most likely rub shoulders with the person next to you, and sometimes conversation may just erupt with the people around. I have had numerous conversations with people next to me, and I believe that the whole experience is what makes Thai Tom not just a place for great thai food, but also a place for a great time.

The food is perfectly priced.
The setting is second to none.
The only drawback may be the size of the restraunt, if you are not there early, be prepared to wait, sometimes as long as fourty five minutes for your meal. Despite the drawbacks Thai Tom is one of the best places I have been for great food, and good times.

People who go to Thai Tom for the service don't get the point - it's not about service, it's about food! And is the food good! By far this is the best Thai in Seattle and I've ate at all the citysearch top 10 and others. Yes, you have to wait to eat. Yes, the servers don't wait on your every command (and yes, you should still tip them). The fire isn't the reason to go, although it's fun to watch. The food is. The Penang Curry is the best I've ever had (but it's better if you get it with a couple stars) as is the Peanut Sauce and Phad Thai. There are different restaurants for different attitude and I hate when people want absolutely everything in one place. This place has good cheap thai, why whine about it's charismatic littleness?

Thai Tom is not an authentic Thai restaurant for the following reasons:

1. The waitstaff gives everyone chopsticks. In Thailand, people use a fork and spoon combination for most dishes and chopsticks only for noodle soup. We had to ask for a fork and spoon.
2. At Thai Tom, dishes are served individual-style in a ceramic boat. Thai-style is that everyone shares dishes, which means everyone gets a plate. When we asked for plates, we were given saucers.
3. Phad Thai (rice noodles) is not a dish usually served with a side of rice.

After having lived in Thailand for the better part of a year and hearing, over the years, rave reviews of Thai Tom, I am disappointed to say that they are not even the best Thai restaurant on "the Ave", much less in Seattle. I think the undeserved reputation is a matter of style over substance as the cook can make the flames leap into a fiery show.

On my first visit I found the cashew chicken to be overly salty. On my second visit, the penang curry was bland (!). However, on my third visit I thought the Phad Thai was delicious, definitely the best Phad Thai on the Ave.

The weather was cold and, because of the line out the door, the interior of the tiny restaurant was freezing. If you don't mind eating pseudo-Thai-style and with your coat on, no less, then order the Phad Thai and consider yourself forewarned.

Cons: Freezing in winter, long lines, inauthentic.

I went to Thai Tom's and was very disappointed. The food was good, but the service was horrible because we were basically ignored by the waitress and it took us forever to get our food. When I finally got my food, I was happy. Their phad see yew was pretty good.

Very good Thai food. Watch how hot you get it, though, because they are not afraid to put some kick in it. We tried 4 stars and probably 3 would have been plenty. The space is small and cramped, so not the best place for a quiet date. They are quick, the food is good and it is very inexpensive. No beer or wine to be had.

I've eaten a lot of Thai food, in Thailand and across the country. Thai Tom is so good that at one point, my boyfriend brought me a to-go box of it when he visited me in Pennsylvania. The best dish, IMHO, is Swimming Rama. I get it with fried tofu. The food in Thailand didn't have so much peanut sauce as we have here, and I think it's their loss!

But don't go if you have a big group or you're in a hurry. In the latter case, call ahead and take it to go!
