I hope to god the things I've heard about Northwest Seed & Pet are not true. I work with a woman whos boyfriend worked for the company for some time. She claims that they treat their animals, puppies ect., horribly. She sais that if an animal was sick or if they couldn't sell them for some time they would take them into the back, hit them in the head with a shovel and stick them in a garbage bin in the back of the shop. Fom what i've seen she isn't one to lie, although she is very dramatic. This could not be true....Right? People would surely catch on if this was happening and it's probably just her boyfriend making up stories because he was fired for being a poor employee. I sure hope so but I'm going to do my best to put this rumor to rest by my own investigation.

I was in the Sprague store about 3 months ago and saw that the guinea pigs were loosing there hair and looked like they may have mites. I informed the employee and they removed them to get better care saying they had just been brought in from someone who couldn't take care of them. Today I went in and all of the animals were clean and happy. The employee knew everything about the animals I was asking about. They do a great job there and if you want to complain about a store go into Evergreen Pet! I've got some stories for them!

I have been reading the reviews of the Sprague store and I have never seen the issues you all are complaining of. I am an experienced pet caregiver and yes there are a few messes sometimes in the cages but i have never seen the dogs laying in their own poop or the birds not being taken care of. I always see the employess playing with the birds and they always have a lot of knowledgeof the animals. Maybe it was a bad day you were there or you just like to complain cause i have gone there for years and never seen these issues with either store.
Of course if I did see the issues you all have i would do more than just complain on here or to the employees i would call them in so it must not have been as bad as you say.

The pet area in this store is filthy and stinky. The animals are improperly cared for and the pet area staff is rude and doesn't care about the health of the animals. I brought multiple issues to the staff's attention regarding 2 Leopard Geckos about two months ago, and they told me they were healthy and getting the proper care. Then about a month ago, after seeing the condition of the geckos only worsen, I spoke to them again and got the same response. I even spoke with the store manager and owner (Robert Mauk) and still nothing was done to help these poor animals. These geckos had hardly any water and the water they did have was clearly old and dirty. The floor of their cage was covered in poop, so clearly the cage had not been cleaned in over a month. (Leopard Geckos only poop about once per day). The only food these geckos had were a few meal worms crawling around in the gecko poop (This is what causes parasites/diseases because the worms eat the poop and then the geckos eat the worms). Also, the geckos had no shelter whatsoever. Leopard Geckos need a dark cave like shelter where they can sleep during the day because they are nocturnal. The male gecko was the thinnest and had a divot down his whole entire back. After not being able to stand it anymore, I made my VERY LAST purchase here and bought these geckos. I took the sickest gecko (the male with the divot down his back) the very next day to the vet and the veterinarian agreed 100% with me that these animals were not cared for properly and were underweight. They also had parasites (pinworms) at a level 3 (on a scale of 1-4).

Just yesterday I went into this store again to observe how the animals were being cared for and was not surprised when I found other Leopard Geckos in the same condition. Other animals were also nearly out of water and had cages full of poop. It is disgusting and inhumane. Something needs to be done. Please do not shop here for anything. The best thing you can do is to not support this business. Animal neglect is serious and should not be supported. It should be stopped.

***The 2 Leopard Geckos are now doing well. They eat like crazy and act like they have never eaten before in their lives (probably because they hardly got any food at the pet store). When I first got them, they had horrible aim when it came to catching worms and crickets. Now they are much more accurate and are actually putting on some weight. I have seen a reduction in the size of the divot in the male's back. There has an incredible increase in the amount of activity from both geckos (at the pet store I honestly did not see them move once). Mealworms are always offered in a dish and crickets are made available nearly everyday. The geckos also get the proper amount of calcium and humidity and are soaked after shedding to make sure all skin has been removed from sensitive areas such as toes. Fresh, clean water is always available and is changed at least once a day. They are on terrarium carpet which gets changed once a week. Poop is cleaned out as soon as it is seen (usually within the hour it has been left). Two dark shelters are available in the tank (one for each gecko). Both geckos have received proper medication to eliminate the pinworms and will be rechecked very soon to make sure the pinworms are indeed gone. I am happy to say that the health and happiness of these Leopard Geckos has greatly improved and will continue to improve and be closely monitored in my care.***

If you have any questions for me please do not hesitate to respond and ask me. Thank you for your time reading this. Again, please help by not supporting Northwest Seed and Pet's horrible pet business. Pet area staff, managers, and Robert Mauk (owner) do not deserve your support.

i know there are animals, and you expect a certain animal smell, but this is just gross. I have worked in a pet store before, so i know how the animals should be cared for.

cages dirty every time i come in(i just go in for wild bird seed). always smells very strongly of urine/feces.

chickens and rabbits crammed in small dirty cages, the guniea pigs always have babies (can't you separate the sexes for crying out loud, or are you breeding your own snake food?)

The pet birds always look terrible-i should know, i raise several varieties of birds, and know how they should look-smooth shiny feathers, and bright eyes-these birds are dirty, raggedy, and lacking in spirit. not to mention the finches always pecking wounds in each other--separate them already!

people are welcome to pet puppies when they have them, but often the puppy pens are not clean, and they have been rolling in their own poop--yah, that's fun to pet. last time i was there, there was a cockatoo in a cage that barely fit it, and no form of stimulation.

I've said something to the staff, on numerous occasions, and all they say is 'oh, ok'.

i don't go there anymore, i go to aslin finch instead-they are clean, smells nice(like hay), and very friendly. better selection of animal feed, for better prices too.

My daughter and I walked into the division store today. I was looking for more bird stuff, and wanted to see their selection of birds. I was appalled at what I had seen. The birds cages were filthy, the finch cage had poop from top to bottom, their were to many birds in each of the cages. We then looked at the other animals, they had two beagles I think they were probably 9-12 weeks old, and I could see the rib cage on one of them, My three year old wanted to pet them and I wouldn't let her. We then moved on to the goat, who I didn't see with any food or water. This is the first time I went into the division store and it will be the last I go into any of them. You had plenty of staff that was just standing around today so there was no reason they couldn't clean up after the animals.

This store has it all. They have everything from feeder crickets to shrubbery plants. There are employees in each section, specializing in what they do. There are animals of all kinds, making it a great place to bring the children. There are strong backs to load big things into your truck. The place has been in Spokane so long, its a landmark.

I take my kids here frequently, the staff has always been gracious as we wander through the store looking at the animals and toys and such, we've only purchased 2 cats there but the process was painless, and they were very helpful. They also have some excellent local honey that we purchase that is available for a reasonable price.

Come see the live alligator here! That's not something you can see everyday! Great variety and inventory of pet supplies and food. Plus a garden center for planting needs.

Every time I go to get my crickets for my frogs I am amazed at this store's size selection and friendliness. I love how they take in unwanted and neglected pets and reform them with love from their staff.

Cons: animals are not properly cared for
