Black Pearl appeared on my social calendar (via a Tweetup) last week & I was interested in checking it out. I looked up reviews on the restaurant and people either loved it or hated it ?? I had to find out for myself.

Going into the restaurant, I kept my expectations low and I was pleasantly surprised. I won??t name all the dishes we had but you have to try the following: Spicy Fish in Szechuan Sauce, Salt and Pepper Crispy Fried Calamari, and the Pot Sticker Dumplings.

Some things to keep in mind: be sure to have an appetite, the servings are large; this would be a great place to get take out or do a last minute dinner with a few friends; be sure to carpool because parking is a bit tricky.

I had broccoli chicken, it was bland and the chicken was nearly rotten, it was soo gamey i made them take it back and make me something else.

The general tsao's chicken was bland and over cooked.

I had the egg drop soup and could only manage one spoonfull before giving it back.

Go anywhere but The black pearl..

Unless you want the sh1ts.

DO NOT waste your money on this restaurant. We tried on a friends suggestion and agree it was the WORST chinese take out we have eaten in Seattle. We ordered the won ton soup, chicken chow mein and Peppered Beef tenderlion. In all three dishes, the veggies were cooked to mush, there was no flavor except the beef dish which was DOUSED in pepper and the soup was a soggy mushy mess. Even the white rice was poorly made- crunchy and stale. We will never again stray from Judy Fu's. At least when they say they cook with fresh ingredients, they mean it.

My boyfriend and I like going to the Black Pearl because the food is great- we love the sesame chicken and the chow mein with homemade noodles. It surprises us how non-busy the Black Pearl always is...It is never empty, yet we never have to wait for a table. Service is usually pretty good. Not a place to go if you're looking for ambiance, but we like it all the same.

I don't see the hype behind this place. The food is OK. The sesame chicken is good as long as they metal out of it. That's right...you read correctly METAL! When I called to tell them that my wife had bit down on a piece of metal in the chicken, she didn't seemed surprised. She says "oh that is the metal they clean the woks with.". So, that makes it better. NOT! I wasn't looking for a free meal, but some concern from the management. None was given. As I have said before...METAL IN THE FOOD!

We almost didn't go back to this restaurant after a year or more away after reading these reviews. Glad we decided to go anyway. We always loved their homemade chow mein noodles but these reviews were so scathing we thought maybe the restaurant was sold.

I can't comment on anything but the chow mein which IS the main reason to go. My wife got chicken chow mein and I got chow mein with barbecue pork. Both of these were very large and the homemade noodles were wonderful. Between the two of us we could only finish a little over one dish and took home the rest. The service was very good and friendly.

It is the best place for homemade chow mein in the city.

This restaurant is cursed. We've tried it many times only to suffer from poor food, terrible customer service, and an overall bad experience. Beware.

We used to enjoy meals from here. The last few times we ordered their food, it was nasty, but not as unpleasant as the management. The orange (or was it organ?) beef, although somewhat easier to chew on than my flip flops, contained merely two overcooked flowers of brocolli. We had to call Shoreline to speak to a manager and were blown off, being told the brocolli was a "garnish". They use styrofoam for take outs, not the environmentally friendly paper boxes. Don't be fooled if when taking your order they politely ask you if you'd like chopsticks, sauce or fortune cookies. If your meal isn't satisfactory you'll have to go to World's End to try to get an apology. Best bet: Panda Express at Northgate. Cheaper, Tastier, More Food, Nice People, Kid Friendly.

We ordered Chinese Take-out. It was extremely disappointing. The Kung Poa Chicken was dry and seasonless, the sweet and sour prawns were greasy, the prawns practially non-existent, buried in batter, and the sauce terrible. It was pricey. I am willing to pay for quality, but not for this. Please, will someone open a good Chinese delivery resaurant in the Sandpoint, University district?!

I have ordered takeout from Black Pearl a few times. The food is decent, but there is better Chinese food elsewhere. I liked the wontons in peanut sauce. I have never had a very good experience with the customer service at this restaurant. Once I ordered $90 worth of food for a group dinner and when I went to pick up the food I asked if they had chili sauce. The bus boy went to get me the chili sauce which came in those tiny tiny plastic containers. He was about to give me 3 when the front desk girl asks if I paid for those, and told me they cost .30 cents each. I couldn't believe she was making a big deal about .90 cents worth of chili sauce when I had just ordered almost $100 in food! That was the last time I got food from Black Pearl, and I am never planning on returning based mostly on the fact I've received poor customer service.

After reading some reviews of Black Pearl, I decided to try it once. I was not impressed at all. It tasted like almost any other Chinese place. The hot and sour soup was good, but I think you have to find a REALLY bad place to find bad soup. The beef dish that I got was definitely not worth the money. I decided to give it a second chance later and tried the homemade noodles. Better, but they seemed a little bland to me (though the blandness allowed you to fully taste the noodles, which are good). I guess it's fine if you're satisfied with typical Chinese food, but I'm looking for quality.

Must have changed owners and cooks -- just kept the name! Our last order and yes this will be our last order at this restaurant. Old BBQ pork, Ten Ingredient Chow Mein--what ten ingrediants? Beef tough, shrimp--not good--absolutely nothing like it used to be. Too Bad

CONS: Bad, Old and no good

This is the best. Great quality, fast delivery service, great specials.
The vegetarian soft wonton in peanut sauce is amazing.
They offer brown rice, also.
I love this place.

Throughout my life time this restaurant has gone through more name changes. The inside stays the same as does the menu. My favorite is the chicken chow mein with their house noodles. I also really like the hot and sour soup. This place has food to go, delivery, and eat-in. Some nights are really busy, and it is hard to find a table. Other nights they are slower and the food is cooked fast and the service is very prompt. All in all I like it a lot.

I think the title says it all. The homemade chow mein noodles are delicious, as are the potstickers. Both are totally worth going back for. However, their chicken dishes definitely leave something to be desired - the sauces are thin and just plain don't taste good.

This fast and delicious Chinese restaurant is our favorite in Seattle. With two locations - one on 35th Ave. NE and one up north off of the 145th St. Exit, you've got to try one of the Black Pearl Restaurants or get delivery! Their house noodles are to die for and everything is served fresh, fast, hot and delcious. I always get the chicken chow mein with house noodles, but everything I've had there has been excellent. These restaurants are small and weekends can be standing room or delivery only. But it's worth the wait and definitely worth take-out. They've been written up in Seattle papers and locals love the Black Pearl. Try them this Friday night with eggrolls and you won't be sorry!

PROS: Delicious food, fast, friendly, hot, local
CONS: Can be crowded on weekends, small restaurants

I've tried delivery and take-out, totalling 2 experiences with this restaurant. Both times, the fried rice was scorched. The pork wontons in the wonton soup were mushy and pretty nasty. The walnut prawns for almost $12 were 10 in number, with a pile of walnuts and half an orange on the side, with about a teaspoon of sauce. Try Asian Place on 160th for this dish: around 20 pcs. displayed beautifully on a bed of broccoli and crispy rice noodles. Black Pearl's homemade noodles are good, as is the Lover's Eggplant, but I probably won't waste my time and money here again.

My wife & I ate there Saturday night, July 31, 2004.

This is not typical of most places I've been. We had 10 Ingredient Chow Mein & Mu Shu Pork. We usually order more exotic stuff than that but we just wanted a simple meal. We need to try other menu items before we make a final decision.

I didn't care for the potstickers
No atmosphere and average service. For what we had, I don't have any problem with that.

I live four blocks away from Black Pearl so for better or worse I'm very familiar with the restaurant.
The food is good. The style of cooking is homestyle; the type of place you could take your elderly aunt to.
That said, the restaurant is VERY inconsistant in portions and value. I've had to send back $7.95 dishes of things like yu shiang pork and sesame beef because the portion was so small that it could have been dished out with an ice cream scoop. This isn't much of a problem when dining at the restaurant because one can just send it back; take out or delivery is another matter.
One hopes that the undersized portions are an occasional kitchen mistake, but it happens so often that it seems unlikely.
When this restaurant is good, its good, but when its child-sized portion night its the worst Chinese restaurant value in Seattle.

I don't particularly care for eating in the restaurant, not much ambience, but the food is heavenly so I get home delivery as often as the budget allows. The delivery service is extremely efficient, they ALWAYS get there quicker than I expect, the drivers are polite and the food is always hot and fresh.

what makes black pearl special is the lack of grease and sodium that is so common to 'chinese' restaurants. the flavors are more subtle and delicate and everything tastes very fresh. they also have a large variety of vegetarian dishes. one negative - the service is hit or miss. although food is always served promptly, water glasses are not always refilled and it usually takes awhile to see the check.

The owners of Black Pearl are from Taiwan, and have their own spin on traditional foods. One example is their Green Onion Sesame pancakes. These are to die for, with perfect crunch and chewiness! They also have a handmade noodle for their chow mein - if it's too plain for you, ask for some side dipping sauces if you like. They also have familiar Mandarin dishes, but are not overdone with salt and MSG. They are health-conscious, low sodium, with less greasy/heavy sauces, and offer the option of brown rice. One favorite of ours is the Chicken with Cranberries and Snowpeas. We've always gotten fresh ingredients when we've ordered their dishes. Vegetarians must try Bean Thread Sheets with string beans. We have come out with a smaller bill than many other Chinese restaurants that we've gone to, and had tons of leftovers for the next day.

We can walk to the Black Pearl from our house and do often. BA has always been a great server (in the 4 star way) and the food is very satisfying. You'll never go back to normal chow mein noodles, their home made chow mein noodles are terrific and they have the best hot and sour soup in the city! Small, local, and good is the way I describe the Black Pearl.
