I've been going to 14th & Grand for a few years now. It's terrible to read of all the bad experiences people have had over the years...I can't speak to how it was for them but for me, I've always been happy.

Let's start with the desk-staff: I've never been treated rudely, never felt uncomfortable, and find the girls quite sweet actually. That being said talking things out by phone (like ideas for color, let's say) don't go well, they just aren't as intuitive that way. however, I blame that on myself...I don;t know all the lingo, not well versed on newer techniques etc. I'd suggest asking for a colorist to speak to for a consultation, and doing it in person. It won't cost anything, they can look at your coloring and hair type and THEN they can make suggestions.

Color: I've had trouble communicating what I wanted, and been doubtful during the process, and yet...I've been thrilled at the end. So, for me I think it's just a matter of knowing how to express what you want. They're not mind-readers after all. Pictures really do help!

Cut: I've had 3 different gals over the years, and been happy with all of them. Why 3 gals then? the first two moved away, and I was sad to see them go. Each time they recommended a gal, and I went with her. I wish I could afford Douglas but, cest la vie!

Overall: I love the no-tipping policy, I love that continuing education is a requirement, I would expect them to critique newer stylists and make sure they deliver the appropriate standard. I find the color area too dark, but it doesn't seem to affect their work.
I love that they post special offers to Twitter & FB...smart idea for keeping their stylists busy and working!
I only wish I lived closer!

Thank you for your comment. I am sorry that your friend was confused about the salon she was working for. 14th and Grand has been a no tipping salon for 15 years. This has never been a secret. We removed the tipping element of the salon experience to assure that our clients will receive unconditional service every time, believe me our customers appreciate it. You no longer have to watch stylists compete with each other, or treat you different because of your financial situation. True we do pay our stylists hourly, for every hour you are at work you are being PAID! Even if you only have a few clients or a possible no-show. Along with an hourly wage we offer medical, dental, and paid vacations! I have also known a few stylists to get loans from the owner when times were hard. This information is all explained when you are hired here.
As stated on our web-site and in our interviews:
"We have always believed in a salon culture that offers team members the advanced education needed for professional growth and the positive environment needed for personal growth, therefore our stylists focus on either haircutting or hair coloring. Our specialized departments work together in an energetic, creative atmosphere to provide clients with personalized results and exceptional service"
I know from experience that our staff and our clients love this about our salon. I have seen first hand that most stylists are stronger in one area and we try to grow that. I??m wondering why your friend was surprised by this? Once again this is not a secret. Education is very important to us; we send our staff all over the world for advance training. I know that if I was a customer and someone saw my hair being messed up, I would HOPE that someone would come over and help! That doesn??t make us a "teaching" salon that makes us a "team" salon. We all want each and every person that leaves to look good. Your friend may not have liked that, but our clients do. 14th and Grand is a high end salon and I am sorry but we do expect our employees to look good. It??s the fashion industry! We have a very simple dress code as do many other professional businesses. You stated ??who the hell does that? My question is ??who doesn??t?? I have been the front desk manager for 10 years and the majority of our staff has been here 8+ years. I think that says a lot about us. The staff was quite shocked at your review. But in the long run we are glad your friend found a place she can "stand" to work at.
Thanks again for your input,

When I moved back to Spokane after living in Portland, OR for 13 years, one of the things I struggled with most was trying to find a good salon and stylist to cut and color my hair. After little to no success, for about 6 months, I actually went back down to Portland to my old salon. That all stopped when I went to 14th & Grand.

I have to say, I was completely delighted to find a "big city" type salon in our not so big city of Spokane! I have been going faithfully for the last 2 years and could not be happier with the consistently excellent quality I have always received. Colorist Alisha is amazing and Amy who cuts my hair is fantastic. Because my hair is long and very curly it is no small thing to actually be able to manage it.

As for the rest of the staff, I have always found them to be extremely helpful and professional. After my services yesterday, I was delighted to find that the gals at the front desk had already pulled the products and shampoos I wanted (because I had mentioned it to my 2 stylists) and had them waiting for me at the desk. Thanks ladies!!!

I know they stand behind their services 100% and I love knowing that if for some reason I wanted something changed, I could easily pick up the phone and I would be scheduled immediately and it would be done - no questions asked.

14th & Grand has done a great job of staying current with new trends and techniques - and has done an even better job of keeping my hair highlighted and cut to perfection.

I have been going to them for over 10 years, they treat me like family. Friendly, Fun and Professionalall at the same time. They have saved me from many a bad hair mistake that I have tried to make. They know my hair well. I love that they pay attention to what will work for me and what won't. In an emergency they make room for me even if someone has to stay late. The owners well I love them too, they always say hi if they see me there. I send lots of people to them and have never had anyone complain, they always go back. Thank You 14th and Grand! Best Salon in town!

Pros: specializing in either cut or color

Cons: can't think of any

.

First off! They have hair educators that critique the hair designers work. Totally unprofessional in my opnion if you are treating your so called employees like students then run a school not a salon. They do not allow tips for their employees, they try to justify it by saying they pay more an hour on average then other salons. WOW 14.00 an hour. They have percentage rules about what an employees can wear I.E. an employee can wear 30% black and 20 % another color , who the hell does this? I went there as a favor to one of my friends and was doing 14th the favor of being there for an updo evening and they were so rude to me telling me my color was awful . If they were maybe trying to get to switch to them they blew it. i told my friend i do not know how stand to work there. If you are looking for a great Salon go to Salon Retro in the Valley. The won Zbest award! Awesome place, they also do not sell hair product that smells like dog shampoo!

I've been going to 14th & Grand Salon since the early 90s. They have seen me through every style imaginable and continue to make my hair current yet age appropriate. I have my favorite stylists and colorists but am never disappointed when trying someone new. I love it there and would never go anywhere else!! I am confused as to where the people complaining are going.

Lets just say I'm beyond disappointed with what the owner lets go on in this salon. I??ve been a customer for years and I've had enough. It time for a new salon, a salon that doesn??t leave the customer with an unwelcoming feeling!
The front desk girls working if you can call what they do working?? Are incompetent, rude, snotty and think the whole world revolves around them making customers wait well the finish there conversations. If you get an appointment and the front desk girls manage to schedule you on the right day and you make it passed the check in: the salon has a few talented hairdressers. But the bad news is you are still not done dealing with the front desk staff, you still get the not so lovely experience to pay for your hair cut with these not very bright individuals!

The girls at the front desk were really friendly, they took my jacket and offered coffee and let me know where the robes were since I hadn't been there before. The people who do color specialize in it and did a great job. My hair turned out exactly like I asked. The person who did my cut listened to what I wanted and gave me just that. The people at the front desk helped me find the products that were recommended for my hair and also suggested a few for what I was looking for how I style my hair. I will keep coming here for years to come!

I am so disappointed with my experiences at 14th & Grand Salon. While the girl who cuts my hair (Kaila) is amazing, kind and talented, the rest of the salon, from the stylists, colorists and front desk personnel, are astonishingly rude, snobby (and having been a client at some of the top salons on the West Coast - the 'best' in the industry know service, and they know finesse is half of their business. Snooty attitudes are reserved for a small town salon trying to be big.. such as 14&G), unprofessional and lack talent. My colorists on both occasions were unable to produce the results I specifically explained I wanted; both with photos and appropriate terminology. I know hair. I know the industry very well. 14th & Grand DOES NOT know hair. I have requested their instructors (most "experienced") for my color work, and was told that the sheeting color process was "dated" by an overweight 40-50 something with fire engine red hair and gray roots making her look like she was balding. Very knowledgeable indeed. Instead she gave me the traditional streaky highlight/lowlights. Quite cutting edge my friend. The price wasn't a concern for me, being in the industry, whether it be $65 or $315, but regardless of price, I expect professionalism and the ability to meet client needs - at the least - for what I pay. I will never, ever go back. Dept Z here I come!

Not a good experience.
Was a very uneven haircut and when I talked with the staff and the manager I was disregarded completely (in quite an unprofessional fashion) and told no money back and that I had come in there to get a haircut "fixed". (no way!!!)

This was not a fixer upper, but I did have to wait several months before people stopped asking if I had cut it myself.

Never again.

Bumble and bumble products - buy 'em at Fred Meyer or Amazon. Don't have to go through this place!

Where do I start? I have been to this salon 4 times now, in hopes that it will live up to the rave reviews I have heard about it. But this last trip to the salon was the final one! For starter, the hot water tank went out and they had to shampoo/rinse my hair 3 times in FREEZING water. (The stylist told me it had been out for almost 4 days and yet they didn't bother to mention that when they called to confirm my appointment). The gal doing my color messed up and had 2 other girls trying to tell her how to fix it, but no one would tell me what was wrong (and since they left me laying back in the sink for 40 minutes I had no idea how off the color was!!!!) What was supposed to be caramel turned RED. Next, came the cut (if you can call it a hair cut). I told her just a trim and I was growing my bangs out so I asked that she not cut them. Next thing I know she RAZORED 3 inches off in length and cut my bangs. I complained to the manager and was told QUOTE "the color looks great, red is IN this season and the stylists know best." No one would offer me money back and I was basically laughed at for complaining. This is hands down the worst salon service I have ever had. If you want to be treated as a child and have your hair jacked up by all means, go to 14th and grand.

I went in for a trim and to get my hair thinned (very thick and shorter) - she completely lopped off the bottom and the right side is now 1 1/2 inches shorter than the left and very choppy. A few have asked if I cut it myself.

When I talked to the manager, Michelle, to express my frustration that I will have to live with this for 6 months, and request my $ back to get fixed elsewhere in summary - she refused to refund my money, and in called me rude, attacked me personally and hung up on me. Um, can you say customer service? wow. needless to say, I will not be going to 14th and grand again

If you love snobby and snotty this is the place for you! I have been to this high priced salon on about 7 occasions seeing the same hairdresser hoping it would get better but it didn't. I can't believe I paid that high of price for a simple hair cut only to cringe every time I looked in the mirror. My pet peeve of course is a hairdresser who can not follow my instructions of what I want. I am really not hard to please. I finally gave up this spring after another disaterous cut.

Wow - didn't realize the wages hairdressers were making today! I called in to get a cut - to donate 10-12 inches to Locks for Love Charity none the less - and was shocked! I may as well pay $12 at supercuts for the same inexperienced hairdresser.

Great if you're willing to pay for it- sorry, have you looked at the economy lately? $70 is a tank of gas for my SUV!

OMG! My mouth is still hanging open from the phone conversation i just had with a girl who answered the phone at this joint. I am going to be in spokane on business for a weekend soon and am totally looking forward to getting my hair done as i often love to do when i travel. I was wanting to book an appointment for cut and color. The dummy asked me what kind of color and i said i wasnt sure and i was wanting someone to give me some suggestions and do whatever they thought would be rockin. She acted like shed never heard someone say this before!! She kinda laughed like one of those dumb "i'm making fun of you" laughs and proceeded to say she couldnt book the appointment unless i knew what i wanted done. Now call me crazy, but as a hairdresser, those words are like music to my ears. granted, i am from LA and this is what i do and who i am, but i didnt realize it would be such a feat to find someone cool in Spokane, Washington. Especially at a so called high end salon. What a joke! That moron just lost a customer and the chance to make some money being that i was giving her carte blanche. I know that couldnt have been the owner and i wish to god i would have got her name because i do not wish to call them again for anything! not even to complain! with someone like that working behind the desk i doubt they would even get it.

Cons: off the charts stupid girl answering phone, running clients off before they even come in to salon

I just got the WORST HAIRCUT EVER at 14th and Grand. The woman spent 30 minutes RAZORING my hair and butchering my style. She didn't layor, didn't trim, didn't shape, DID NOT DO ANYTHING I ASKED HER TO DO. She just razored my hair and then charged me $40 it. A RIP OFF. She did not say ONE WORD to me the whole time and just looked at herself in the mirror while she "cut" my hair. After I left she continued to look at herself and started straightening her hair. She did not care about what I wanted, about customer service, about a return visit. I WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN. And if you want a good haircut, take your money and take your time to someplace else. This is the worst experience I have ever had and thanks to her, I will now look awful at my cousin's wedding this weekend. DO NOT GO HERE. And on top of it all, she razored my neck and cut me. F that.

F that.

Pros: Nothing.

Cons: EVERYTHING.

I've been going this salon for 2 years now. It is definately a nice salon, nice environment. I like that some of the stylists travel for continuing education. It's exclusivly a Bumble and Bumble Salon which has great products. I like this salon because it is a comfortable atmosphere it's not really "uppity" like some salons. The staff is very friendly. I also like that they have the salon divided into two sections, one for color and another for cuts. This means you have a different stylist that does color and cuts, whatever their speciatly is. I also like this salon because it is easy to get an appointment. Overall I have really enjoyed this salon. I have just decided to stop going because I have not yet gotten a haircut I have really liked. I have tried 4 different people for cuts. I have paid up to $65 just for a cut, and I didn't love it. I have never received a terrible cut, but when you pay that much money you should have a great haircut. I would pay $35 at the most for the quality of hair cuts you get there. The color is the same. I have never really liked any color job they have done. Last time she really messed up my hair. I wanted to be blonde. She left the toner on too long and left purple streaks in my hair. The color was also very uneven. That color job was $90. You do not get what you pay for at 14th and Grand. I have many friends that go there and they feel the same way. I also haven't ever liked their hair after being cut there. I don't think I have ever gotten a compliment on my after going to this salon. I think the salon is overrated.

Pros: Non tipping, continuing education, atmosphere, easy to get appoingment,

Cons: Never liked my hair when leaving, Too expensive for what you get, definately not all that it's cracked up to be.

I can't believe there is a salon like this is Spokane. The decor is wonderful, very funky and fun, the front desk staff is friendly and it seems like everyone is having a great time. I had my hair cut and colored and I love it! The staff is very up to date and knows their stuff, they sell Bumble and bumble products and let me know what I needed to get my new look at home. I have already recommended them to my friends and they send a card for $5 to use in the salon for everyone I send in!!! I will go back, I already have an appointment booked.

I have been going to this salon for 4 years. Yes, It has changed a bit from what it was but I have always been happy with my services. I have gone to 3 different colorist in that time and have always loved my color. Not always my haircut but If I don't tell them what is making me crazy how can they fix it? Products are a bit expensive but the staff is educated and freindly. they actually tell you why and how to use things so you can go home and have a good hair day. No one ever did that for me before. I think the other reviewers just needed to speak up, no one is a mind reader.

14th & Grand is a high-quality, well-staffed salon! They are on the cutting edge and have a very talented group of stylists. Their services are more expensive than some salons, but well worth the price. I have always been satisfied with my cuts and color.

THIS SALON AVERAGE AT BEST. TRYING TO BE SOMETHING THEY ARE'NT

Pros: WALK IN

Cons: EXPENSIVE

Although a bit pricey for smaller city standards, the staff at 14th & Grand is as professional as many Seattle salons. Stylists specialize in an area (ex. cuts, coloring, etc.), meaning higher quality. Stylists show steps to take to replicate styles at home and recommend products used. Said products (sold at salon) are quite pricey. No gratuities are accepted.
