The Scene
To the uninitiated, the name may bring to mind a portly TV barfly, but this Fremont spot is, in fact, named after a dog, which is obvious enough upon entry--Norm and his canine pals adorn much of the wall space. Featuring a nightly food special dubbed the "Doggie Bowl," the theme may be just a little too much for some, particularly cat people. The space is high on comfort, with a handsome bar, couches and booths for dining. It aims for a broad audience--smoking is prohibited and a kids' menu is available.

The Draw
The atmosphere is decidedly laid-back, something that sets it in stark contrast to its raucous neighbor, the Ballroom. The beer selection is sure to satisfy, and cocktails are stiff enough to grab your attention. Food is solid (the Three Pepper Burger is a winner), but some other items could stand to be more boldly spiced.

Key Points

  • Open for lunch every day
  • Trivia every Thursday nite @ 8
  • Breakfast 9am Sat and Sun

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - Happy hour is from 4pm to 7pm, Tuesday-Sunday and features rotating food and drink specials.
  2. When to Go - The bar hosts a lively trivia night on Thursdays at 8pm.

Great Place to Have a Beer with Your Dog

by Tess T. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,228

Of course Seattle is a great place to own a pet, but at Norm's, they actually encourage you to bring your dog in with you while you have a beer. You'll walk in during any after work happy hour and find people sitting right along with their dogs eating and drinking. Unfortunately our dog is too bad to take out in public, but I still enjoy seeing other people's dogs in a bar. The food is okay and the drinks are reasonably priced, but the atmosphere is well worth the investment. They also serve 40s in a bag!

best-most interesting bar food in seattle

by bballchico

hands down..the best, most interesting bar food in seattle. you read the menu the food sounds interesting. It is good or better than the description. there are eaterys out there that wish they served food as good as Norms. Slowly working my way thru the menu to enjoy the experience. Ice cold Black Butte in bottles a plus for me.

Pros: the food.the wait staff. tv positions.bar with foot rail.

Cons: i'm just not a dog person

The kitchen, the bar, the food----GREAT!

by draym

My wife and I have been going here for about 6 years, and the kitchen staff keeps doing amazing things. The staff is friendly, and the dogs are well-behaved, or Steve (Norm's pet) will 86 'em!

Pros: doggie bowls, the catch, the pastrami sandwich, all the rest

Cons: sometimes the parking

A really fun place!

by smitty2009

We go to Norms once a month and bring our doggies. They LOVE it! We order them their own burger (hold the spices, please) which comes in a bowl. They get their own water bowl too...! I've had the Cobb Salad, burger, Chicken and Brie Sandwich, Mac n Cheese, Hot Wings, Meatloaf... all are VERY good. I love the Pub Trivia, watching/listening to sports and being able to sit inside a restaurant with our dogs beside us and not tied up outside.
I highly recommend this place to all dog lovers, beer drinkers and people people! See you there!

Pros: Great food, efficient & friendly staff

Cons: NONE

Expected delightfulness

by ilovepeach21

So I finally went to Norms. I went with my boyfriend and our two dogs. We made a point to go during happy hour for some cheap drink and eats. I definitly was pleased. The atmosphere was very fun and casual, and the happy hour menu was well priced. I will say that the food isnt exactly the most amazing, however it is totally worth it to be in a fun bar with your animal friends!

Pros: dog friendly, very cool interior, good happy hour

Cons: just "ok" food

Atmosphere + Great Food

by johnnali

My husband and I (and our pup) have wanted to try this place for a while. We embarked on a bike ride from Magnolia through Ballard and were ready for lunch when we got to Fremont. Problem...dog in tow and we hate tieing her up outside, so we dropped into Norm's. We were impressed to find a great menu, it was hard to pick just one item and friendly staff. They were a little slow but very friendly and it made for a relaxing lunch with our pouch by our feet. I had the Beatrice sandwich, loaded with turkey, swiss and sauerkraut accompanied by homemade potatoe chips and delicious slaw. My husband has a burger that was equally, if not more, delicious. It was great to find a place that has a great atmosphere and tempting bar food. We can't wait to come back and try the other enticing menu items like cornmeal calamari and funeral fries!

Pros: Great food

Cons: parking could be difficult

Dog Owner's Dream

by sarahboerner

I absolutely without any reservations would recommend Norms Ale House and Eatery to any dog owner or dog lover (and everyone else for that matter)! This eatery has become a favorite for my husband and I since we can enjoy time out with friends and include our Basenji in on the fun. This has also been wonderful for our dog to get more experience with other dogs and unfamiliar people. The food is actually quite good in my opinion and much of the menu can be tweaked for those on a vegetarian diet (My husband and I both are vegetarian). My friend Katey assures me that the food with meat products in it is delicious too! They have a great variety of drink options also (beer, wine, specialty drinks, non-alcoholic). The service is always fast and the wait staff are so kind and sweet each time we are there. We have become such regulars now that in fact one of the waitresses recognizes our pup and we have had some great conversations with her during slower business hours. Saturdays are always quite busy so if you are looking for a quiet and mellow atmosphere I would urge you to check this place out a different day of the week. You have got to check this place out! It is awesome for a low-key, friendly dinner or drink!

Awesome. I'll definently come back!

by daredevilxxx

I had a great time at Norm's! The service was quick and friendly, the food was warm when served to me. I got the Bacon, Avocado, Cheese Burger and it was delicious! The fries were super yummy as well.
I loved looking around and seeing a bunch of well behaved dogs in the bar too! Very cool. It was also pretty neat to see 40s of PBR in paper bags.
I had a great time singing happy birthday with the rest of the bar to the poor guy sitting at the next booth. I love that kind of banding together with a bunch of strangers to do something like that!

Pros: great service, yummy bar food, dogs are allowed inside!

Great weekday pub food & good weekend breakfast

by rhill639

Norms is a great neighborhood pub- and not just because they are super dog friendly. Their alehouse salad & chicken chili (the secret ingredent is Peanut butter) combo is the best! But their burgers are a close tie- and for a real treat try their HOMEMADE potato chips. YUM But it can get busy later on in the evening... Especially on Trivia night.
Weekend Breakfast is a nice quiet event. The hash has every kind of meat & veggie you can imagine and my favorite is the Irish cut oatmeal. Yum! (but get coffee next door at Cafe Lladro)....
Try it... you AND rover will like it.

by denverd2323

Dogs - man I love dogs and Norms is one cool place where a dog and a dude can hang out and be happy. The girlfriend hates it, but them she doesn't really dig the dog either. I say get thee to Norms and have a cold one, or a scotch - whatever

Pros: Good vibe - helpful staff

Cons: My girlfriend doesnt dig it

Great neighborhood bar and even a good weekend stop!

by sione

Norm's is a great place to stop at after work for a 40 oz. of PBR in a paper sack or another beer or drink. The drinks are pretty good and reasonable. The food is good as well. To my surprise, on the weekends, this typically slower-paced yet still popular bar really seems busy and a happening place. Great people watching and dogs are welcome (and often present) as much as their owners.

Pros: Good food, great drinks, 40's in paper sacks is kind of amusing (and a cheap buy)

Cons: Parking isn't great, can be pretty busy on the weekends,

A Great Place With Great Food And They Love Dogs

by desmoscott

Being a Ducati motorcycle owner I'm always looking for the next great place to get on my bike and ride to. There just aren't that many stellar destinations in Seattle. Norm's stands out from the crowd with an incredibly friendly staff, excellent food, and great beers on the menu. It's always easy to walk in, sit at the bar, and strike up a friendly conversation with Michael or one of the other staff members. The food is way above standard pub fare and delivered quickly and hot. It's the place I always choose when it comes to meeting friends and to top it off, it's dog friendly. I attended a PAWS fundraiser there earlier this year and it was a total hoot. For a step out of the ordinary in pubs, definitely try Norm's!!

Pros: Hey it's Fremont

Cons: Hey it's Fremont

Great local spot - service could use some help

by shellyturtle

I have been to Norm's for some great birthday parties, it's relaxed, with nice servers and reasonable prices. There is good room for seating large parties. The only slip-up was when the server told us that we had to start tipping her better, which in the service industry is completely unacceptable. Maybe she was having a bad night?! Overall it should be kept in mind for low-key nights out.

Pros: Reasonably priced, Good for big parties, Relaxed environment

Cons: Crowded on Weekends

Go to happy hour here

by jasonclinton

Dog friendly, smoke free, good happy hour joint. Order the funeral fries with Norm's Chicken Chili and cheese. Excellent selection of beer and I've always had good service. Free parking too, which in Fremont is hard to find!

Pros: Happy Hour, Smoke Free, Dog Friendly

Unique, Fun, and Comfortable

by beegove

Norm's is a great place for a group of friends to go out and drink when they want to actually hear each other speak. One of my favorite places to sit in the summer is at Norm's tall tables along the front when the windows are all open. It satisfies the tastes of everyone: beer, good wine list, cocktails, food and snacks, and don't forget that forties of PBR are available. They will even give you a paper bag. How fun is that?

Pros: variety, menu, unique

Cons: small, service when crowded

Great grub, but service could use some help

by darthrabbit

The CitySearch review above is actually fairly accurate. Norm's is indeed a relaxed, comfortable place. The beer selection is fine and the food (especially the burger) is very tasty. The waitstaff, while very friendly, are somewhat forgetful and through their confusion mixed up one drink and two food orders on our last visit.

Pros: Burgers, 40oz bottles of PBR, Relaxing atmosphere

Cons: Forgetful waitstaff, Prices are a bit high
