Jose is a master at designing and making exquisite jewelry. There is no one that makes the one of a kind jewelery that he does. I have been very happy with all the jewelry that he has made for us over the last 11 years. His shop on old main street in Bellevue is a jewel in it self and he has been making jewelry there for over 30 years.

Jose Chapa Hernandez is a Master Jeweler!...My family and I have been doing business with Jose for over 30 years and he is truly an artist. I have read some of these negative reviews and its clear to me that they confuse knowledge for arrogance. He knows what he is talking about because he used to teach gemology at a university and has 40 years experience in the Jewelry business. He has a nationwide clientele and he is truly the best anywhere. Some of his custom pieces cost over $30,000! It seems some people think its like getting a car repaired. Its not, its art and it takes time to do it right. Respect his knowledge and he will do wonders for you. I recommend him highly.

15 years ago, my husband-to-be and I went to Jose to get our wedding rings. We were amazed at the artistic quality of his work, and we appreciated his working with us to design our rings. And the rings were gorgeous, and garnered many compliments over the years.

To us, this was an exciting time in our lives, and Jose played a big part in that.

Fast forward to present day: my ring needed to be enlarged. I didn't trust anyone but Jose to do the job. I brought it in one Saturday. After 2 weeks had passed, he said it would be ready that week. He told me to come in on Thursday; when I came by, the center stone was missing. He said it definitely would be ready the next day; when I came by after work, the stone was still missing. I was told that the "stone polisher" hadn't returned the gem yet.

My family then went on vacation for three weeks. Upon returning, I called Jose and he said the stone still was at the polishers, but it would be ready next week. I called back the following week, and I was told the same thing: next week.

The following week, my husband called on Tuesday; no one answered at the store. Starting to get tired of the runaround, and suspicious of the store being closed on a Tuesday, I crazily thought that, perhaps, Jose was screening his calls. I told my husband to call Jose from his personal cell phone. Sure enough, Jose answered the call right away! When my husband asked what the status was of the ring, Jose went into an obscenity-laden tirade, saying he wished me and my husband never had entered his life, and he threatened to "come over and beat up" my husband, twice! My husband said he felt his heart beating out of his chest, he was so upset and taken aback by this conversation! It was so upsetting and unprovoked. It was like Jose had snapped. We conferred with a police friend, wondering if we should press criminal charges (threats of bodily harm), and civil charges (breach of contract, as we still did not have our ring back). Most disappointing of all is how sad we felt, that someone who we respected and admired, and who we had very warm memories of, had treated us. At this point, I just wanted my ring back.

The next day, Jose called my husband and, in the nicest voice, informed him that the ring was ready to be picked up. It was like nothing ever happened, and the earlier threatening conversation never even took place!

We went the following day to get the ring.

I thought long and hard before deciding to post this. Jose's work is truly unique and beautiful, and if you are purchasing jewelry from him, I doubt you would be disappointed. But if you need a piece serviced in any way, beware. He never once called us with an estimate or an update. He had me come by twice unecessarily, and he misquoted his lead-time by nearly 10 weeks. And there's the most disturbing issue of his sudden tirade and threats to us. This has been a very sad experience for my husband and me, and I just hope in time that, when I look at my ring, I remember the happy time when we were first designing it, and NOT this recent, upsetting event.

I still do not have my ring from this rude, arrogant, obnoxious, conceited jeweler. My wedding ring needed some repair that we were finding hard to get from any jeweler that we talked too. He came recommended from a friend (who obviously didn't know him very well) so we trusted that he would do a good job. He said he was going to do it himself in his shop because I didn't want it shipped all over the country. He said he would call us with an update.

That was 8 weeks ago....I still do not have my ring, he has NEVER called me with any sort of update. When I called him 3 weeks later he told me that the company in Los Angeles had put superior diamonds in my "inferior" ring and that it "looked funny"..(what happened to doing it himself???)..so instead of calling me, he sent it back to LA. Now LA wants him to pay for the second repair and he won't do it. So they are holding my ring hostage. I am now forced to get the insurance company involved to see if I can get my ring retreived. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS JEWELER. Any smart, savvy jeweler knows you NEVER insult a womans wedding ring. I wish I could give him negative stars....The absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced....

This has been an 8 week ordeal and I will get the police involved if I have too.

I came in last week to this jeweler to look at a necklace and see what pieces he has in his store. I asked the prices on few different pieces since THE PRICES ARE NOT LISTED ON THE PIECES AND ARE MADE UP AS HE GOES ALONG DEPENDING ON WHO HE IS TALKING TO. He kept going on about all of his experience in the jewelry industry and how all these customers come to buy from him and how they are all loaded and spend tons of money then how inexpensive the jewelry was that I was looking at and that it should be a drop in the bucket to buy. It was really unprofessional and tactless. He was asking me all kinds of personal questions trying to figure out how rich I was and then said "Oh you don't have any money to buy anything here." In reality, I was thinking what a jerk, no wonder this place is always empty when I pass buy on a walk. The pieces don't have prices on them and the owner is like a pushy arrogant salesman that insults you if you don't buy the first piece you look at.

Very disappointing experience. My husband bought some beautiful earrings for me from Mr. Hernandez and one of them broke when it caught in my hair about 3 weeks after we bought it. It took a few weeks for me to go back and I asked him to replace the missing piece. He bragged about how no one else could fix it because he'd made them himself. (Note - it broke after two wearings and he made it himself.) So, he said he would fix it and I should come back the next week. I called to see if it was ready and came down when he confirmed it was ready. But it wasn't ready. He asked if he could solder the two pieces together instead of recreating the connecting piece that had broken off. I said, "no", I wanted the pearl to dangle just like its mate. So, he told me to come back again in a couple of days. I gave him some extra time, but it wasn't ready the week after that, nor the week after that. I called each time before driving over, but after 5 weeks and 5 visits, I said I'd take it somewhere else. And he got really snippy. He said I didn't understand how busy he was and how he had customers waiting 7 years for him to find perfect matching stones and my project was too little to bother with. My project? He'd made it. After two months it was finally ready. He said he'd "rushed it through" and he certainly did. He soldered the two pieces together instead of matching the finding to my existing earring. So, I ask myself, did he really create that first joint, or did he buy it elsewhere and found himself unable to copy the functionality of that first earring. I am very particular about the custom jewelers which whom I do business. This was a small job and as he couldn't handle this without causing me to make 7 unnecessary trips, I'm certainly not going to trust him with my more serious commissions, nor those of my clients.

Cons: Miserable Custom Work

J Chapa Hernandez is certainly a knowledgeable jeweler. After 35 years of "wedded bliss", my husband decided that I should have a larger diamond. We did a considerable amount of research (How to Buy a DIAMOND by Fred Cuellar, internet diamond info and trips to a few big name jewelers.) We then visited J Chapa Hernandez. We told him what we were looking for and he showed us several beautiful stones. We selected one of them and he mounted it in my existing setting. Superb workmanship. Definitely a five-star operation!

My husband and I spent a great deal of time looking for a jeweler who could create beautiful custom wedding jewelry to comemorate our marriage. JCH's pieces stood out as the most strikingly beautiful and timeless.

We were incredibly impressed with JCH's knowledge and patience through the design and production stages of our pieces, which included both of our wedding rings, as well as my earrings and necklace. They are not only the most beautiful pieces of jewelry that I've ever seen, but they are unique and one-of-a-kind.

During our many visits to JCH's gallery, we noticed that there were often other customers lingering around who simply came in to visit - sitting around sharing small appetizers, chatting and laughing. The laid-back atmosphere in his gallery makes for a very comfortable place to enjoy and browse his jewelry cases.

JCH is a rare gem of a jeweler. We enjoyed working with him very much and will be reminded of his creativity every time we look at our wedding rings. We will continue to purchase all of our jewelry from him and recommend him to all of our friends and family.

If you're looking for a custom jeweler, we highly suggest JCH.

Rob V. sounds like he was trying to impress his fiance with champagne on a beer budget, and should have gone to Zales instead of a Master Jeweler who once taught university level precious stones and also has a very impressive array of stones here in Bellevue. Too bad that Rob V. mistook superior knowledge to that of arrogance, but then one cannot educate a square rock to skip..

My ring is special because you designed it. You were very helpful when I came in to select something , anything, but when I saw that ring, it was it. Your store is like eye candy. The strong sense of color, design and gems are amazing. You also repaired my 100 year old necklace when other jewelers said it could not be done without loosing the integrity of the cameo. I thank you for your patience with me in choosing ,finally ,the ring I wanted. You were kind and tactful in helping me choose. KK

J Chapa Hernandez Jewelers sold me an extraordinary ring with a stunning Ellensburg Blue in the middle. Chapa himself designed, created, and finished the piece. I found his personality and demeanor to be quite warm and patient as he helped me find the ring of my dreams. This was my first big purchase on my own (not a gift) and I got exactly what I wanted. I am now the proud owner of an exquisite piece hand crafted and of the highest quality which will no doubt be handed down to my daughter as a family heirloom. I've since sent 5 friends to Chapa, all of whom had similar experiences and left with gorgeous new jewelry! I will go back again and again!

After I proposed to my girlfriend (she said yes!) we found that the ring I got needed to be about 2 sizes smaller. She wanted to keep the ring I proposed with, so rather than send it back to the online jeweler I purchased it from, we came to J. Chapa Hernandez to get it resized. By the time we left, my fiance was close to tears.

J. Chapa Hernandez told us that resizing the ring could pose a risk to the ring's integrity. He could have stopped there, but when he learned that I had purchased the ring from an online jeweler he said this is what happens when you try to save money and buy something from the Internet. He then went on and on about how poor the quality of the ring was. It's remarkable that he didn't have a bad thing to say until he learned that I purchased the ring online.

We came to J. Chapa Hernandez to inquire about resizing a ring, and instead we were insulted and forced to listen to the ramblings of a snobby jeweler who's angry that we didn't purchase one of his over-priced rings. I did months of research before selecting the ring I gave to my fiance, and it wasn't cheap. It's bad enough that J. Chapa Hernandez had the gall to insult it in front of me, but he stepped WAY over the line by doing so in front of my fiance.

Every other jeweler we brought the ring to has complimented us on its beauty. It appraised for really good quality and high value, and (most importantly) my fiance loves it. Frankly, even if the ring WAS a cheap piece of garbage, it's the ring I proposed with and it means everything to us. For him to insult it so blatantly, and continue to do so even as he saw the effect of his words, is reprehensible. This man is incredibly rude and tactless.

Fortunately, our story has a happy ending. We found another local jeweler who resized the ring and tightened the sidestones while we waited, and he did a beautiful job.

J. Chapa Hernandez boasts of his 40+ years of experience. I wonder -- at what point did he stop treating customers like human beings?
