Moctezuma's Mexican Restaurant is worth the price

by zeba n. | insider Insider | Rank: 32,530

I have been going to this place since it was a hole-in-the-wall restaurant on south tacoma way. There is a reason that they have done so well with their business They know how to cook and their recipes are superb! I noticed that they even opened a restaurant across the bridge. Their tortilla chips and salsa are excellent and I love the fajitas If you go there for your birthday and mention it to your server they will give you a neat surprise at the end of your meal!

overpriced and poor quality

by c s.

We had one of the recommended dishes. It looked like it was covered in a dark brown sauce that looked opaque. It tasted extremely bland and heavy. I was so surprised with the poor quality compared to all the hyped up recommendations.

I have traveled throughout the west and southwest and really enjoy Mexican food but to call it authentic just seems wrong and way overpriced for the type you can get anywhere.
I agree with another review that says its a cookie cutter Denny's Mexican fast food restaurant.

YUMMY

by Katelyn J. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,214

The food at Moctezuma's is wonderful. The atmosphere is great too. One time, I had my bday dinner there, and they were so nice. They sang a cute song, shoved a sombrero on my head, and brought me the yummiest churros I have ever had! Plus they have really good prices.

You should try this place.

by Donna H.

I grew up going to the old location on South Tacoma Way and my parents and I got to know the Garcia family pretty well over the years. I even used to work there and even though I now live in Phoenix Arizona I still crave Moctezumas. The food is AWESOME!!! I try to make it there everytime I get home to Tacoma. There are several employees who work there that have worked there for years and remembered me after not seeing them for more than 10 years. very family friendly atmosphere, affordably priced and great tasting food. I absolutely reccomend trying this place if you love mexican food.

Sip and savor

by Kathryn S. | insider Insider | Rank: 26,912

We visit Moctezuma's pretty often for its generally fine take on Mexican classics. The owner's family and many of the staff have roots in the same small Mexican village where a miraculous Abuela has trained and given wings to a amazing host of restaurant founders and workers now living in and enriching the cuisine of Western Washington state and the northwest. Great foods, great people, great connections.

Our favorite reason for frequent-flyer miles at Moctezuma's, admittedly, is really the Acapulco Margarita -- the true classic, done simply and refreshingly.

My spouse loves the house Chile Colorado and orders it often. Tops for me are a few assorted dishes. Moctezuma's does one of the better moles I've tasted anywhere, and their Arroz con Camarones has a rich and subtle sauce, chunky carrots and celery and mushrooms, tender rice and juicy prawns, and that's about it -- needs nothing more! (This dish is always served sizzling hot, so start carefully even if you know how delicious it's going to be.) This place also does by far the tastiest Carne Asada I've had any place; I thought it couldn't be matched until they introduced the Carne Asada salad. Yahoo! Salad with built-in steak. Huge, loaded with marvelous standard Mexican ingredients in a relatively simple but surprising mix, it's even-handed in its blend, jammed with flavor (I especially like it with the house creamy jalapeno dressing), and varied enough to keep me from getting bored from first bite to last -- and I do finish the whole huge dish.
