I've previously worked for Banfield for about 8 months. The hospital management progressively shown hostile behavior toward me. I was afraid to go to upper management due to retaliation. Plus, this hospital is over priced.

We trusted Banfield with our pets. Unfortunately this almost costed us our precious Chihuahua's life. We had both our dogs on a wellness plan at the east Vancouver location. The staff up front was friendly but we did not like the fact that every time you go in you pretty much always see a different doctor.
The doctors insisted we spay our six month chihuahua even though we were worried because she was small under 3 pounds. They informed us if we waited past 6 months it would cost more & that they spay small dogs and cats her size all the time. After her spay the doctor very nervously informed us a piece she tried to tie off slipped inside our dog & she was unable to dig it out so she had to be cut more in order to get to it. We were assured this happens often & it wasn't a problem. 2 days later on dog was pooping blood. Things continued to go down hill from there all the while we payed for MANY more expensive test trying everything to find out what was wrong with her.
When she got really really sick then they decided she was "too high risk" for them to operate on her so they sent us to an Emergency place. Luckily the doctors there were knowledgeable & able to get her into surgery just as her intestines burst. Turns out that somehow during her spay they sutured a part of her intestines. The surgeon has contacted Banfield & they are now covering the cost of her treatment. Nothing can make up for all the suffering my dog has been through & she is not even out of the woods yet. The amount of stress this has caused us is unbelievable! I would not recommend them to anyone! EVER!

We have an older dog we rescued off the streets of North Portland - literally. \r\n\r\nTaking him in to the vet, we needed to get him neutered, have his teeth cleaned and basically get him checked out since he'd been living on the streets and we knew nothing about him.\r\n\r\nI took him to Banfield because it was close to my house and it was convenient, but I'm glad I did. We found out he had severe Dental Disease and needed to get his teeth cleaned asap and we were able to get him in in just a couple of days! \r\n\r\nThey made sure to neuter him and clean his teeth at the same time so we only had to put him under anesthesia one time, and we got update calls duing the day - the neutering went great - the teeth are being cleaned; He has a nerve exposed on one of his teeth another is loose, would you like us to pull them, the cost is an extra $50 for the extraction (only charged for one tooth) and the antibiotics for a week. Picking him up, the Vet was super kind and personable, and made sure we fully understood all the instructions for the care of our little man and his incision and his teeth. \r\n\r\nEverything we had done in our first visit would have cost over $1000, and over the course of the year, Using the Wellness Plan they have (Basically, monthly installments) we'll only be paying about $600.\r\n\r\nI love the proximity to our house, I'm happy with the cost of the care, and I appreciate the courtesy and helpfulness of the staff.

I have nothing but high praise for Banfield in Vancouver as they have treated us with nothing but respect and they've been 100% forthright in communication with us. We found our rescue doggy living on the streets and he was in good shape, but we needed to get him neutered and he badly needed his teeth cleaned when we found him. Our FIRST visit for the neutering and teeth cleaning would have cost over $1000 for everything they did to help this poor guy. Using the wellness plan, we'll only end up paying $600 for the whole year - and we still have MANY visits left on it that will be free of charge. We are saving hundreds of dollars and they let us know UP FRONT (and it's in the paperwork) that it IS cancelable at any time, but they deduct the services you've used, and have you pay the balance. Totally fair! We had our dog neutered, and his teeth cleaned, I'd expect nothing less. Our dog had been seen by another vet who said his teeth were "Great" but his breath was CLEARLY bad and you could see they didn't look great. He had one tooth so decayed the nerve was exposed! Banfield caught his dental disease and is helping get him back up and eating again. Also, they called us all along the way with any additional charges they anticipated and didn't even charge us for everything (He had 2 teeth pulled, we were charged for only one extraction). They called to let us know he was done with each part of his procedures and how he did. The front desk staff was very helpful, answered all my questions honestly and the Vet was increadible. Very nice, clearly loves animals and even took the time to make conversation with my 4 year old when he was wanting some attention that the dog was getting. :) All in all, I find the other reviews very confusing, since we had nothing but top quality care and I am fully glad we took our little guy there.

I worked for Banfield briefly as a collections rep at the corporate office in Portland, Oregon. The post by Daniel is perfectly indicative of the Corporate atmosphere as well. The Wellness Plans are made for one reason only, TO MAKE THE COMPANY MONEY! All day long I talked to people who were told by the hospital that the plan could be canceled at any time. I Know for a fact that the corporate office is aware of this misinformation and deliberately does not advise there hospitals to correct this. The actual production cost of the services provided by the wellness plans is often less than $100, but the ??Retail Value? of the services can be in excess of $1000.00. I understand that a company obviously needs to make money, but the markup on these services is outrageous on top of the unethical lack of information given to the clients by the hospital staff (generally speaking) about their options for canceling the wellness plan. In addition to this the billing for the company is all ??paperless?. You have to give a credit card to be automatically billed every month. If something happens and the payments aren??t automatically processed for several months the wellness plan is canceled to collections. At this point, even if the ??Retail Value? of the services used is LESS than the cost of the plan they are going to send you to IC Systems (a collection agency) for the whole year??s cost of the wellness plan plus collection fees, if said fees are allowed in your state. This means that if you took your pet in to the hospital all you had done were 2 shots and some kind of fecal exam, and later on the payments are defaulted on (sometimes the ??automatic billing system? randomly just stopped taking payments for, SERIOUSLY, no reason!) you are going to be sent to collections for up to $400.00. Granted, it is ultimately the client??s responsibility to make sure their bills are being paid, but how easy could it be to miss that 21.95 wasn??t deducted from your account? SOMETIMES the clients will be mailed a letter saying the payments are not being made and SOMETIMES a phone call is generated in the system, but by no means does this happen with every client. I would say it happens maybe 30% of the time. I know, this is all I did all day long for two months while in the Wellness Plan collections department. I have never in my life worked for a company where all day long I had to listed to people threatening legal action. I really believe that it can??t be legal that they cancel the wellness plans to collections for more then the retail value of the services that were used, and I also think this is in direct contradiction with what the actual contracts say. This is one of the worst jobs with the worst company I??ve ever had in my life.

I had the complete opposite experience. I've been taking my puppy here for the last four months. Every time we go in, they give me the pros and cons of what they're recommending. They don't push things on me if I tell them I'm not interested. They're incredibly nice and helpful. I was surprised that I liked them so much since they're a chain but I do like them a lot! And I'm a dog trainer so I have pretty discerning tastes when it comes to vets.

I to took my kitten to Banfield and had the same remarks about how people who don't take their animals to Banfield don't really care about them for the vet tech, it seems as if unless you have money you are worthless to them, I now take all my animals to Companion Pet Clinic and absolutely love them there.

I took my kitten, Buster, into Banfield the day after I rescued him. I just wanted to get him his booster shots and flea treatment. A man did an exam on him, and said nothing about whether my cat looked healty, or what the shots were going to cost. He gave him a flea treatment and cleaned his earsthen left the room. When he returned, he brought me an invoice for almost $250.00!!! There was an extensive list of tests they wanted to do, and other misc. things. He pretty much told me that I didn't really care about the cat unless i had him get all these things done. I declined, and just paid for the flea treatment and ear cleaning (about $20 total). A few days later I visited Orchards Vet and they gave him all his shots, a check up, and de-wormed him all for $30. They also told me Banfield was trying to scam me, and the cat was fine without those tests.

I would highly suggest Orchards Vet instead of Banfield, hands down. They are located on NE 117th street in Vancouver, by the Bi-Mart and 24-Hr Fitness.

PROS:
CONS: manipulative, deceiving, gave me a guilt trip, overpriced, scam artists
