They have a pretty good breakfast/lunch/dinner but come for the dessert. I have never had a problem with service as long as you are there before the closing

We love B&O. My husband's favorite is the German Chocolate Cake. He says it's the only true German Chocolate Cake he's found in Seattle/Eastside as long as he's been here (20+ years). We try to get a whole cake for his birthday every year. One of my favorites is the lemon pie. Sweet, tart, and lusciously smooth.

The B&O has eclectic and unusual food offerings as well, but we don't get to Seattle often and we wouldn't miss dessert at B&O.

The atmosphere is a little funk and cozy. A totally engaging atmosphere in which to drink coffee, chat, read a book, or just hang out and enjoy the food.

On the corner of Belmont & Olive is one of Capitol Hill's
longest running dining establishments. Owners & Hosts Majid and Jane offer a varied menu featuring traditional breakfast and brunch egg dishes along with more exotic brunch preparations such as Shakshuka or "Eggs in Purgatory" as well as "Beni Thai" eggs Benedict (think eggs benedict on top of a sticky rice crab cake).
On the weekend chef Marta cooks Mexican brunch specials consisting of traditional rustic colonial dishes from her home country of Mexico. These are not to be missed as many customers go just to eat Marta's cooking.
If you are in the mood for something lighter try one of the exceptional coffee drinks and a fruit platter or slice of Budapest coffee cake.
In a nod to the owner's Jordanian heritage there are several middle eastern preparations sprinkled throughout the menu. The Hummus platter is the best in the city and the Egyptian Foul, is a delicious preparation of pureed fava beans drizzled with olive oil and served with pita bread for dipping.
This is a delightful place to entertain out-of-town company and there is something on the menu for every taste.

My husband and I always come here for Valencia mochas. They are the absolute best. We love to come here, split a cake. Our favorite is Black Muddy River, it's really delicious, but very rich. It's definitely a slice to split. And the orange liqueur in the cake pairs nicely with the Valencia mochas. I can't say anything on the the non-dessert food as I only come here for dessert and coffee. I suggest coming here after a movie.

The atmosphere is most appropriate for cozy one-on-on dinners, but also excellent for small groups. It's very dark, with candles on all of the tables and random paraphernalia on the walls.

I subtracted a star as we had a rather snobby waitress on a calm Tuesday night and it kind of broke the mood. But other than that I will keep coming back for cake!

White chocolate cake was amazing the butter cream was perfect. The cake remained firm yet moist. The raspberry sauce was tart and perfect compliment to both desserts. The mousse was light and smooth. Portions were ideal. Good first visit. Will give fifth star if second experience is equally as pleasing. Thanks!

My husband and I had been planning to get married for about a year and then one day we decided to get married within a week...why prolong the stress of planning a wedding! We heard B & O made delicious cakes, so we called them. Who would have ever thought a place named B & O Espresso would have great wedding cakes? They met with us the next day, gave us samples to try of their different cakes and showed us a photo album of lots of cakes they had made in the past. They were so beautiful it was hard to decide but we didn't have time to labor over the details! We chose a chocolate raspberry tort cake with light periwinkle frosting, a cream colored piping design, with live periwinkle blue flowers and cream colored roses. They make the fresh raspberry sauce themselves and put it in as a filling between the layers of cake along with the whipped cream icing. OMG! It was wonderful, decadent, delicious and they delivered it to the place we were getting married and set it up, ready to be served. It was beautiful and not at all like the dry, tasteless wedding cakes people usually serve. Even our photographer who does a couple hundred weddings a year said it was the best wedding cake she had ever had. Try them, you will be pleased!

B & O has moved their bar upstairs right off Olive Way (called Bar 41). They have one of the absolute best Happy Hours in the city; the prices and drinks are fantastic.

I am terribly, terribly picky about my drinks ( the liquor, how the drink is made and price). B & O is the only place which has done brilliant in each category. I don't want a fancy $12 new-fangled, mangled, foo-foo drink (hello Poppy), it has to taste good and be well made. The bartender, Ashley, is a brilliant drink-mixer and great person to have behind the bar; no snooty attitudes here.
The new bar food, sliders, are tasty and cheap, a great addition to the menu.

Even better, B&O has added on a second Happy hour in the later evening. Did I mention all HH drinks are $2 off? That is the way a Happy Hour should be---not like those fake happy hours at bars where the bartender choses which god-awful drink is discounted. At the B&O (Bar 41) the Happy Hour is geared toward the pleasing the cusomer: which drink do you want? It's $2 off.

And that is the way it should be--more happy hours for all of us.

We live really close to here and used to go here all the time for meals, coffee, and desserts. The last two times we went the service went from bad to terrible. The previous time we went it was freezing outside and we were seated in the bar for dinner pushed up against the outside door. During dinner our waiter pushed around me and opened the door, letting in bitter chilly air, right on me as he went outside to smoke. We tried again the other day for breakfast, I took family there from out of town and was so embarrassed, the waiter right off the bat acted like he was terribly inconvenienced to be waiting on us. I have worked in customer service for 12 years and would never act like that, I would be fired. He did not come over once to ask if we needed anything. I had to track down another waiter to get something. While leaving. we even left a good tip, I said "thank you" to our waiter and his response was "um hum." I used to love this place with its delicious food and French decor but even the waiters in France are not anywhere near this snotty. I'll never go back.

I went there with a friend last night for dessert and coffee. I got a nonfat latte and the espresso mousse torte and my friend got the apple crisp ala mode. We both enjoyed what we got, but they definitely weren't the best desserts we'd ever had. Prices, service, and ambiance are all just ok. I wouldn't make a trip just to go there, but if you're in the area I'd recommend stopping by.

The last time I went to B&O was the LAST time. I used to live across the street from them, and would always walk right by on my way to Glo's for breakfast. The food is overpriced, and not that flavorful. Not worth it, in my opinion, and hasn't been in a long time. For breakfast/brunch, try Broadway Bar and Grill (shorter wait). For drinks, try Cafe Metropolitan. For dinner, throw a rock.

I have been to B&O only about four times, but each time has been exquisite! They have the best eggplant sandwich in town, by far, and fantastic desserts. Also, they are fast! It is a wonderful place to just sit around and talk to friends while enjoying a thoroughly tasty meal. (Prices are reasonable, too.)

We went in for an early breakfast on the weekend and it was only moderately busy - plenty of open tables. It still took a few minutes to be noticed and seated. Then about 5 more to be asked what we wanted, another 15-20 to get our drip coffee (which was burnt and overly bitter) and again 20 minutes to get our food. I had gotten the "petite breakfast" consisting of a pancake, an egg, and bacon. I expected a small meal, but the "pancake" was a joke. It was not an average pancake of any reasonable 4-6 inch diameter, rather it was one of the tiniest silver-dollar pancakes I have ever seen. I ate it in two little bites and then used some of my fiance's toast to stop my hunger and sop up my egg. My fiance's meal was a decent size, but tasted horrible. He ordered the corned beef hash (which he loves for breakfast) and got the blandest, mushiest mess of potatos and what we think was cornmeal. It tasted like soggy bread crumbs while being dry and gritty. He had to hunt for a few tiny bits of beef - which had none of the pickled flavor of a good corned beef. I think their chef must be an idiot who thinks "corned beef" means beef with cornmeal. I'm just happy we didn't wait to try this place with our guests from out of town next week! Talk about an embarrassment to the cuisine of Seattle. $24. and an hour and a half = depression about the state of breakfast in this town.

I remember LOVING B&O ten years ago when my friends and I used to come here for dessert and coffee. Nowadays I walk by and get the impression that it's a pricey place, by the look of the customers. That was proven on my first trip back about 3 months ago when we stopped by for dessert and coffee. The bitchy wait staff pretty much just pointed us out of the way, to a table in the tiny, empty bar off to the side. The drip coffee sucked but the dessert was good. Then there was that holiday review about the B&O having the best hot cocoa in town, and we thought about going again, so we did - on Valentine's Day at 10:30pm. The service was decent, the food a decent price for the quality and quantity. I had a milky way espresso which was small but yummy. My boyfriend had some awesome lamb kabobs. Did B&O always offer Mediterranean fare? Seems like such a weird mix - french decor with a focus on desserts, and a Mediterranean menu. Oh well. It was pretty good but nothing so special that would make me go back for more than picking up a dessert or espresso drink to go. I'll be the first to admit that any kind of even slightly pretentious atmosphere turns me off a bit.

I've lived on Capitol Hill now for just over two years and I've been to B&O probably no less than a dozen times or more. The short of it is that the desserts are great, the food is merely good and the service moves like they're in slow motion. Set aside at least an hour for dinner or breakfast and half an hour for dessert. If you're in the area and looking for good food you'll want to check out Julia's or Broadway Grill, which are both nearby and offer excellent service. Unfortunately, I don't have a place to offer up that serves better desserts. Obviously, as far as coffee/espresso goes you can find better just about anywhere in Seattle.

We went here on Saturday night. I had made advance reservations for 12 people and arrived with my party early (8pm for 8:15 reservation). They had us sit in the bar area to wait a bit. We waited until 8:35. I got up and asked what was going on with our table. The waiter tells me he'll help me in a moment and then disappears never to return. I got up from the bar a few minutes later to ask the manager. The manager tells us the table *was* ready but no one ever came to get us seated. No apology, nothing. After we got seated and they took our orders, the food took almost an hour to arrive. We didn't start eating until 9:30. Food was tasty especially the lasagna and the chicken schwarma but it really wasn't worth the wait. Definitely not a place to go if you're in a hurry. They really need to get their act together.

It is open late! The dessert in the best in the city! For a late night sugar craving this is the place to be! There were three of us and one had the white chocalte cake which was the best and then there was the brule and the lemon cake which were all phenomenal! I would say it is a must do!

Love is unconditional. That is how I can express the effection and delight I feel for the B & O despite the service that rarely makes me feel warm and fuzzy (but neither have I experienced it as cold or rude). For me the decor, flavors, and certainly the company that I am with makes every visit I have had there pleasant. If you go (and you should) you won't be bothered by the waitresses, so you can either go with a friend or two and fully enjoy each other's company or by yourself with a book. It is what you make it. I love the chocolatepot, I crave it, and it has become my comfort food. The breakfast on a Sunday morning/early afternoon is boisterous and delicious. In the evenings the atmosphere is chill and comfortable. I have introduced many people to the B & O and everyone has loved it, it has become a place that we share and delight in.

From the moment you walk in, the shabby-shique atmosphere makes you feel at home. Every table is a little unique, and every host, server and chef their own personality. The espresso is warm, smooth and inviting the anti pasto is lively and full of flavor, and the desserts are scrumptious!

B&O is where I take out of towners for their first Breakfast in my favorite city, and their last glass of wine to toast to a safe trip before they go! Though it isn't fit for overly large parties, they have easily accomodated a party of 8 for me, and they made us just as comfortable as they made me when I came in for my first time for a Valencia Latte and some quiet reading.

If what you're looking for is a cozy, warm atmostphere, delicious food, and friendly service, this is your place!

Been to B&O four or five times and each time was great. Didn't notice that the service was slow, however read several reviews stating how slow services is....Since I've been there for leisurely brunches on the weekends, I thought it was nice that we weren't rushed. The service was nice and helpful, as we asked for side salads instead of the roasted potatoes that come with the omlettes. The coffee is great and haven't found another place that makes a better cafe valencia! Will definitely be back for a leisurely time.

The dinners are always amazing- their coffees to die for- but plan on being there for awhile because the wait staff operates on SLOW MOTION. Food will take 20 minutes or more- the check will come 15 minutes after you manage to flag down your waitress after her avoiding eye contact twice.

Pros: Food, Coffee, Location

Cons: Service

.

I was told that B&O has the best desserts. I almost never dine by myself but I was so excited to try it out that I went in yesterday when I unexpectedly drove by it. The food was great, but the service was mediocre. The server did not check on me once, and I had to ask for a refill on my coffee 10-15mins after it was emptied. The only time the server came over was to drop off the bill and the fastest service I got was after I had slipped in my credit card. I'm a waitress myself, so regardless of the mediocre services I still gave a 18% gratuity, because I was very satisfied with the food and believed that the next time I visit the service would be more satisfying. I went in today again for a cup of coffee and some dessert. With a different group of staffs, the service was even worse than yesterday. My friend and I were standing in front of the counter with 3 servers behind it for about 10mins. They were literally within arms reach, not one of them bothered to acknowledge our presence/greet/asked if we needed help, instead, they were busily chatting away. When one of them finally made eye contact with me while drinking her water, she went over to whisper something to the other staff, and finally walked up and asked me, "did you guys need something?" and then she continued to apologize saying she thought I was waiting for someone. Of course I was, I was waiting for one you unhelpful waitresses to greet me and maybe / possibly provide some sort of customer service that you are being paid to do. Again, the desert was scrumptious, but the service was so despicable. Without asking me if I needed anything else, the server came over to drop off my check. I ordered another coffee and immediately after, she dropped it off again. After 40 minutes without checking on our table, and seeing that I'm not paying my bill, she finally came over to ask me if I needed a refill on my coffee. I love the food, I really hope the service will improve and not ruin my meal.

Hands down, my favorite place on the hill. It's got the best atmosphere. It's clean and beautifully decorated, and you feel just as comfortable on a date there as you do enjoying a cup of coffee on your own. I've never been dissapointed by their food (the breakfast specials and french toast are incredible, as are the sandwiches and hummous platter, etc), the coffee drinks are excellent, and the waitstaff is so kind! You've got to check this place out.

My partner and I have been to B&O several times over the past year, but our most recent visit will be the last. We definitely go for the food (breakfast and dinner are tasty, but desserts are even better), which is what keeps us coming back. Each time we've been, however, the service gets worse and worse. We're either ignored, forgotten, or treated with indifference. Our last visit was appalling. We waited 45 minutes for our sandwich and french toast (what a joke) and the waitress was quite rude to us. We live on the Hill and love to support local businesses, but B & O has just lost our patronage. Too bad we can't recommend them.

Sipping a mocha (near a framed Mucha) at the B&O brings a little bit of Paris to Seattle. The breakfast and dinner items may not be the best (Glow's across the street has better Eggs Benedict), but the drinks and deserts are top notch.

One weekend, when my and my wife's parents were all visiting (from Berkeley and NYC respectively), we decided to turn a potential inlaw nightmare into a moveable feast, with the B&O serving as the desert anchor.

They liked it so much we had to go back on Sunday.

Confession: I know some of the wait staff. On the job and off they are friendly, creative people--ideal for conversation, but maybe not for prompt water-refills. With good conversation, a leisurely time frame, and a glass of vin rouge, the B&O's moody purples and blacks should win you back for another round of West Bank (of Olive) action.

This is a great little corner street bar in Cap Hill. Quirky, chatting crew and very personal service. They even served high tea to me on my brithday (a weekend day) when they normally only serve high tea on a weekday!

The bar is nice too, creative drinks and good bar conversation. Try it out!

Not sure what all the other reviews are talking about. Keep in mind, often times people come here to write a review only because they had a bad experience.
I went there last Thursday night and everything was great. Service was good, ambience was good. They had a musician playing italian tunes on an accordian.
It wasn't too crowded. I'm sure if you go on a busy weekend night the service could be slow but that's true everywhere.

Having lived on Capitol Hill for fifteen years I'm sad to say that one of my very favorite places is dead. The B & O was IT for breakfast (the crunchy french toast used to be amazing!), desserts, Tea, Coffee and atmosphere. A few years back it went under new management and everything great about it is slowly being ruined. I keep trying to go back, have an open mind and give it it's millionth chance...and I am always disappointed. Either my favorite dish for dinner is taken off the menu, my food arrives late AND cold or I'm treated briskly and rudely by the waitstaff. The list goes on and on... I wonder when I go, "why do I even bother!?!" The B & O is gone. What is left is a mere shadow of it's former glory. Go somewhere else if you can, this place is done.

Instead of hanging out at Starbucks, try this local B & O Espresso. Usually packed. Great desserts, and some entrees too. Decent prices, but trying to find parking is a bit of a pain! You'll have to look for side street parking, but it's worth it! A good after dinner, date place!

PROS: Excellent dessert place
CONS: Parking is a pain

Have been a regular there for a year now. Desserts are wonderful but a tad pricey. Exotic and dreamy mood. Staff is great. Try the La Fin Du Monde beer, it's my new fav! I found my favorite beer there on a reccommendation from the waitress. The desserts are amazing but a little pricey. Beers are around $5, desserts around $5-$10.

First time trying this restaurant and will possibly be the last. My friend said the food was good so decided to try it. Well, when we walked in, I didn't like the fact that the employees there didn't acknowlege us right away and there were at least a couple behind the counter acting as if they were too busy to wait on us. Anyways, we got our seat and our waiter was EXTREMELY nice, friendly and helpful.

I ordered the artichoke dip which came with pieces of bread and fruit. It was okay, but definately NOT worth it. The food is over priced. That's the reason why I probably would not go back there. It's good just to try it once though. I love the ambience of the restaurant. Feels like you're in a French cafe. Drinks are good though.

I recently had breakfast here with my mother who was in from out of town, and my boyfriend. We arrived at 12:30 and did not receive our food until ONE HOUR LATER. We had to get up to get our own refills. The table next to us, who arrived after we did, got served and fed and were out the door before we even received our food! The tables around us were receiving their food and by the way, their orders were being confused as well. Our food was cold by the time it arrived at our table. I asked to speak to the manager to complain about the horrible service & he didn't even bother to offer a free meal. Horrible! They must be used to people complaining.

Ok so Ill be right up front and say that my girlfriend and I work at Starbucks so we expect personable and genuine service. What we got was mediocre. I order a Hot Chocolate and the server thinks I ordered a mocha until I correct him when we get our tab. Then instead of correct the price discrepancy he says, "...look just take it out of my gratuity". Now the $.85 difference isn't anything, but the least he could have done was act interested, and turn a negative situation into a positive one. At least make an effort.

For me, five stars means a business that I'd consider a "must visit" for anyone coming to Seattle, and B&O qualifies. I bring my friends here, even though I no longer live in the neighborhood. The atmosphere is hip and relaxing and the food is great. The eggs benedict is highly recommended. There may be a wait on Sunday morning, but it's worth it. They also make pretty good cakes.

PROS: menu, atmosphere

One of the first restaurants I went to in Seattle. I was not impressed. The cheese fondue was luke warm at best and the service was awful. They basically forgot we were sitting there. I tried again 2 other times and specifically went at different times of the day...no change. The caliber of food does not merit the awful service. If you do go, opt for take out dessert of cocoa.

The place has its own charm and an interesting menu, but the service is just bottom of the barrel. I have been there four times over the last three years, and each time the service is worse than the last (a friend likes it so I occasionally cave in and go). I've had experiences with the servers being rude, dismissive and completely uncaring. At one point, we waited 30 minutes for our omelette lunch in a restaurant that was only half-filled. At other times, the server has been absent for long periods of time.

A friend took me to this restaurant raving about the desserts but I was disgusted by the horrible service and the very expensive desserts. Not only did both tables next to us (who were both seated after us) get their desserts before us, but the waitress had to come up to us three times and get our orders three times and she still messed the order up. And then they asked us to move tables because another party was coming! I know this place is popular but the service is terrible. The desserts are good but not worth the price or terrible service. Dont patronize this restaurant because you are encouraging bad service. My friend lives right by there and I am mystified when I see the restaurant busy. Why go to a restaurant that hires incompetent servers and obviously encourages bad service?

I've been living across the street from the B&O restaurant for a while, now, and have had to suffer many friends choosing it as their dessert restaurant of the evening. I simply am unable to comprehend why it is so popular. The desserts are quite decent, for the most part (stay far, far away from the Apple Cobbler - but do try the Chocolate Pot). Their drinks are also tasty and cleverly concocted.

However, the prices are astronomical (I recall, last time, having a good laugh about a SEVEN-DOLLAR BOWL OF OATMEAL). The service is inexcusable. I've never had what I would consider even reasonable service there.

By all means, go and check it out. For some odd reason, it's quite popular; it may be just that my fifteen experiences were all flukes. I'm going to continue to doubt that sincerely, but for some reason, Seattlites seem to like it.

B&O does have a create selection of desserts - but the employees are incredibly slow and unhelpful. I stopped in one evening to purchase dessert to go, and waited and waited for service. One employee behind the counter was waiting on a customer, slowly filling their order. Three other employees stood behind the counter, talking with one another, never acknowledging my presence. I left without ordering - and will continue to tell this story, so that fellow Seattleites look elsewhere for dessert. We deserve to be treated better please dont spend your money here!

The B & O Espresso is the ultimate in desserts in Seattle. Their quality has remained constant over the last 25 years we have been frequenting this wonderful spot. They made our wedding cake, the cakes for my daughter's Bat Mitzvah and every special occassion cake we have ever needed. There desserts are always fresh and delicious, worth every penny! There is such a great variety, it's difficult to decide what to order.

PROS:
CONS: I wish they would do away with their smokong section, it wafts down to the rest of the place.

Have passed B&O for years while on my way somewhere else. I should have continued to pass it by. Stopped in for breakfast after a long search for parking.

I ordered one of my favorites, Eggs Benedict and coffee. The coffee was bitter, but hot and steamy. The Eggs Benedict? Awful. Hollandaise was thick, coagulated and cold. No Canadian bacon, just a thin piece of ham. English muffins weren't even toasted. The potatoes were greasy and cold. Service was s l o w. There are better places than B&O on Capitol Hill.
