I love breakfast and was really looking forward to this. The food was good, but not great. The red potatoes (their version of hash), were undercooked. The service was great except the waitress messed up my sons order but she was quick to

located in the old Maltby School house has a great atmosphere with the best food I've had in years!! you won't go away hungry and the staff is the best it's old time good service with good food hard to find anymore...this is the place to go. homemade food like grandma used to make. treat yourself to a good time...go early before 9. they serve breakfast all day on weekends... weekdays they only serve some of the breakfast all day...so check the menu on their website or go early on week days!! if you miss breakfast lunch is even better!!

We just love going to the Maltby Cafe, not only do they have the best service and food, but the fun atmospher is all worth the drive! The long lines and great reviews speak for the cafe it self! This is the best breakfast spot in the NW! It is a must try!

I'm no stranger to great breakfast food, but this place rises above anywhere I have ever been. Been there twice now. The biscuits and gravy, bacon, giant eggs, potatoes - can't find the words to describe how great the food is! If you are anywhere at all near the area do whatever you have to do to go. Better breakfast food would be hard to imagine. If I was wealthy I'd buy the place and move it, along with the cooks, back to Ohio. A+

Long lines but Great Breakfast's. This little cafe is located in the Maltby area of snohomish on the way to woodinville. If you don't mind the wait the food is great.

I was not impressed with the food, however, I will go again and try another dish and really hope that it is good.

The Breakdown:
*Sweet roll-
Do not, I repeat do not eat the sweet roll before you eat your breakfast. My wife and I ordered a roll and cut it into quarters and we each ate 1/4. We were already full before the main breakfast came out.
As for the roll itself, it was huge, but I was not impressed. It was a bit hard or maybe dry from sitting out all night and then covered in icing and microwaved. Also it was overpriced. Just skip it, your heart will thank you.

*Breakfast-
We ordered the Country Eggs Benedict and the Fruit Waffle. We shared the Eggs Benedict and each ate about 1/3 of the plate. I didn't care for the biscuit under the eggs as it was a bit sweet tasting for the dish. I really didn't like the hollandaise sauce. It was to vinegar-ey and had a tartness that overpowered the taste of the ham and eggs. The eggs were poached perfectly and the red potato home fries and ham rasher were really good.
The fruit waffle was no good. We only ate about 3 bites a piece. The waffle was not crispy, but it was not chewy either. One or the other is fine, but this one was just rubbery and very hard. You shouldn't need a knife to cut a waffle, but I just couldn't get through it with a fork. The fruit compote was nice and the cream fraiche was yummy, but really sweet. It was like butter cream. With sweetened fruit, very sweet cream fraiche and then a tiny little drizzle of maple syrup, it was just too sweet to eat. We took home the whole waffle and just thew it out. $13.00 down the drain.

*Service-
Mediocre I guess. About a 10 min wait to get our order placed and another 5 waiting for coffee. About 20 min for the food to arrive. Server was pleasant.

*Suggestions-
Severe portion distortion. I suggest that they cut the serving size in half and cut the price in half too.
(I am 6'1" and 235 and I couldn't eat 1/3 of my meal.) You can safely order one meal and split it. If you are still hungry get another!

Pros: 1 meal can feed 2 people

Cons: Aweful spendy for breakfast. ($40. for 2- before tip)

This used to be a wonderful place, crisp fries that were worth going out of your way for, tasty sandwiches (bread is still good) and good service. Now, the fries are consistently soggy with grease, the food is so-so, service slow. It may be that breakfast is still good, but lunch is now a must-miss. I'm sorry to say that - we used to eat here 4x a year after our Flower World trips.

Cons: Fries, Most Food, Some Service

The Malby Cafe is a decent little drive (about 20 min) from north Seattle that I made on a recommendation from a friend. Clearly many many people enjoy this establishment on a Sunday afternoon. Our wait to be seated was nearly an hour (my wife doesn't forget when it takes an hour to be seated!). If you drove from Seattle, you're not going anywhere else... The restaurant is pretty big; numerous 4-6 person tables with a diner-style sit down bar. Seated at a table, I ordered the special, an egg and sausage something or another, and my wife had the California eggs benedict (or somethign to that effect). The portions were pretty large, the food above average. Coffee was served quickly and refilled in a similar manner. We had seen another table working on a cinnamin roll and decided to give it a try. Colossal. The size was the most memorable attribute; the thing was huge. Tasty too (6/10), but not as delicious as it was large. Still, if you made the drive, you might as well take the roll. (Clearly such a strategy has not escaped the owners of the restaurant.) Anyway, the place is good. No, better than good, but not super-snazzletastic. (I would also argue that the place should be $$ as opposed to $) If you have family visiting from out of town, I'd take them to Maltby Cafe. They'll like the drive, breakfast will be good, and you can all chat about the enormous roll on the way home. (or the book you all read while waiting to be served....)

OK I read all the reviews, I heard about this place. I am an expert BREAKFAST earter. If this place is anything close to Carol's Corner in Vancouver, WA I will write back and let you all know. Carol's Corner is the best, seconded only by Sassy's in Shelton WA... I can't wait....

Whenever i have guests visiting from out of town, i have to take them to Maltby's for breakfast. The wait is usually about 30-45 minutes in a crowded waiting area, but it's worth it. You can also run across to the shops for a little while, because you can hear if your name gets called. The food comes in large portions, so come with a healthy appetite. The cinnamon roll is to die for, but you might want to ask for the icing on the side, cuz with everything else, they're a little heavy handed with it. I always order the two egg breakfast with a side of bacon. The bacon is the thickest i've ever had, the portion of potatoes is huge, and the jam is so yummy you'll want to use all of it.

I'm not sure why this place gets so many accolades--I made the trip out to Snohomish and it was totally like any other diner in Seattle, only a little more greasy (and not in that delicious greasy spoon way). The portions were HUGE and I was quite excited about my cinnamon roll but it was a little stale and not all that interesting. Definitely won't be coming back here--don't make a special trip just to check it out.

Ok... I read the last couple of negative reviews and just had to put my review on our visit to the Maltby Cafe.------------

This place is great for Country Breakfast. If you are looking for a snazy, Seattle upscale, contemporary restaurant with all the creature comforts of a 4 star hotel... this is not your place. It is a pure and simple country diner with great country style food. Fresh ingredients cooked in (gasp) butter and great service. --------------

Since the place is small and everyone apparently knows about it... your wait can be long. But I asked if I could sit at the counter and that cut my wait in half. They sat me in 20 minutes instead of the 45 minutes she quoted me. The portions are huge, but I like to think they are just supplying lunch or dinner later for me. The line to check in is NOT the same line to pay for your meal. ******Quick Tip******: I've left my money with my check at my table and just walked right out of the door. This of course doesn't work if you need to pay with a credit card or need change back. Oh and Don't wait in the "waiting area" if you don't want to become very friendly with the other customers. (smile) >>>>>>>>> I'm glad there are places like this on this side of the country. I found them over in Georgia with great food and service a like. Seattle people tend to have an "air" about them that can come off as snotty. But there are truly great people with a heart of gold out here and the ladies at the Malty Cafe are great!!!

Not only is this our favorite place for breakfast, we take all our out of town guests there to fill their bellies so they are ready to see the sites of Puget Sound. They are always willing to modify a menu item to satisfy my dietary needs. And you have to see the walls!

My parents bring me here almost every time I visit them in Redmond, WA. This place has delicious, huge breakfasts. I can recommend most of the egg dishes and their cinamon rolls (also huge) are very tasty. It gets extremely crowded on weekend mornings, so definitely go early.

The review is misleading, that's for sure. I expected this place to be yummy and chummy - it was neither. The food was VERY plentiful but greasy and tasteless. I agree that plentiful is not the same as "good". If you have no taste buds and a huge stomach, then go to Maltby Cafe. Otherwise, even Applebee's has better tasting food. And the ambience is non existant - as is the service. As is the though put into the waiting area (no chairs, packed with people that have not read these reviews yet, line for paying is the same line as that for waiting and you wait to do BOTH. I'll never go back.

I had breakfast there and, while the food I had was OK, it certainly not what the reviews would lead you to believe. I am willing to wait for a good meal, but the worst part of the wait is that the waiting area, such as it is, is one of the most cramped, claustrophobic spaces imaginable. The worst...

If I remember correctly, they don't even offer omelets; they have scrambles. Is it too hard to make an omelet? Too many people confuse a lot of food with good food. There is a difference. There are plenty of other places that serve much better food and it doesn't take much to beat the surroundings.

For the folks who say this is the best in Seattle: Get over it. Maltby is nowhere near Seattle and this doesn't rank with Seattle's better diners.

If you want a great breakfast, you better wake up at 6 am and get yourself to Maltby. People come from all around to eat here, and the lines attest to that. If you arrive right when they open you can get a table, but otherwise be prepared to wait. You receive a TON of food for the money, and the cinnamon roles themselves are enough to feed a small country. Fabulous food is what you'll find here!

There is not enough room to write about the Maltby Cafe. They have home made cinnimon rolls the size of texas, fresh squeezed OJ, Bread Made Daily and a lovely atmosphere. They have amazing service and fabulous portions. You will not leave hungry.... best of all you will leave with $ in your pocket.

9.7 was the Maltby Cafe's rating when I first looked. I can't even begin to imagine how they came in at less than 10! This cafe has to be one of the best kept secrets in the Pacific Northwest. Have to leave now...I'm meeting friends there this morning :)

Delicious breakfasts! The eggs are perfectly prepared, fluffy and moist (even on over-hard eggs!) and the scrambles are chock full of tasty ingredients. The potatoes are tender, brown & crispy on the bottom, the toast it thick and homemade, and the coffee is good (Starbuck's). I did not care for the cinnamon roll - the roll itself was good, but the almond-flavored icing was too sweet and there was too much of it for my taste. Service was prompt and very friendly, and our order only took about 10 minutes! There portions are large, but the prices are reasonable considering the quality of ingredients and the amount of food you get. You can kill time waiting at the mini-mall across the parking lot, but guys be warned - it's girly shops, full of bath products, purses and beaded sweaters, so bring a book or newspaper.

I enjoy good food, and always a treat to visit the Maltby Cafe. Large portions, good service with a smile and friendly people. Always a wait but always with the wait. Wish breakgfast was served all day during the week but it isn't. Will waiting check out the shops across the street , it kills the time. I take all of my out of towners here and they always ask if we have been back. A must do and must come really hungry and expect a doggy bag to take with you!!! It makes a great treat later on!!!

These guys serve up fine breakfasts, and lots of it. The portions are nice and hefty. Give their 3 cheese omlette a try, or their famous scale-tipping cinnamon rolls, drowning in an amaretto-tinged icing. You'll need a box to take at least half of it home. Take it from me, I'm a whale and I couldn't fit it all in.
Nice, homey atmosphere in a quiet rural spot.
Oh, but the parking bites. Put a girdle on your SUV to squeeze around this lot. If you can help it, don't park in the aisles - it gets so cramped that you may not have room to back out after. Go around back where there's no angle parking. Hopefully, you'll find a spot.

This has always been and continues to be, a very popular eating establishment. Unfortunately it is sometimes too popular and due to the "no reservation" policy unless you have a partyof 8 or more, it is hard to take older guests or young children along if the wait will be an hour. Best to call and check on the waiting time and then send someone with patience and a good book ahead of the group. The food is always fresh, homemade and extremely appealing. We have never taken a guest and had them be unhappy. Maltby Cafe is well known for their cinnnamon rolls that are the size of a small dinner plate and the superb oatmeal topped with pecans and fresh strawberries. Yummms all around!

Maltby Cafe is a true find. Delicious, unique breakfasts at a reasonable price. Be prepared to wait up to an hour on Sundays. This place is well known the region over for its wonderful breakfasts. Luckily, there are cute shops nearby to while away the time. And the PA system at the shops will let you know when your table is ready.

Always a long wait. Food is a fair price but nothing to write home about. Cannot figure out why the high rating of the place, Besides it's out of the way and very hard for an out of towner to fine.

I had the WORST experience there! I nearly had to tackle the waitress to get a refill on coffee and water, they screwed up our bill, and the food was cold. Besides having to deal with the rotten attitude of the wait staff, the place was over-crowded and over priced. I will never return.

I enjoyed a fabulous meal at the Maltby Cafe. In fact, I have had several breakfasts there over the past few years and not once has the Maltby Cafe failed to produce a scrumptious meal!! Everything on their menu is cooked and presented well. Ideal for a couple or a small family. If you go, you must try their seasoned potatos (comes with most breakfasts). Make sure to also get a cinnamon roll... I will let its increadible flavor and size speak for itself, just order it! A little on the expensive side, but well worth it. Also, don't plan on coming in and sitting right down. Saturday's and Sunday's are insane; however, if you time it right (and keep your party small) the wait is not unbearable, 10-30 minutes is typical.

Cons: Crowded, Long Wait (sometimes)

The food and atmosphere were excellent, best breakfast in seattle by leaps and bounds. With out a doubt worth the drive.

Great value for the money. The wait time can be lengthy, but the service is good, the food arrives quickly and the meals are enourmous.

Pros: Food, Service, Good Value

Cons: Parking, Wait, Not healthy food

If you get there past 8 am, be prepared to wait for at least :45 minutes. This nice little cafe may be inconveniently located but I would place this food worthy for a Diplomatic Summit (I would know I've been to a few). The eggs are made to your exact specifications, there is ample reading material while you wait, water tastes good, Orange Juice is freshly squeezed, The biscuits and gravey tastes like they came from a rural town in West Virginia (yes thats a good thing) HAM was real, not fake canned ham, sausages were plump, and the service was superbe. If I would have to invite a diplomat over for breakfast, this is where I would take them.

get there early, the place is always packed with hungry folks. I had the chicken fried steak and wow!! cooked to perfection. If you have 6 or more
people you can make a reservation and split a cinnamon roll which I recommend. What was banshee14 thinking? A 3, he must like McDonalds or Denny's good food????

Much too long of a wait for food that isn't all that great. I've never understood what the big draw to this place is anymore. It may have had good food like 10 years ago but it's totally gone down hill. Cramped waiting area and very loud restaurant once you finally get seated.

Going hiking north of town? Stop here on your way to the trailhead for the tastiest breakfast you've ever had in your life. Got guests from out of town visiting? Bring them here for a real "locals only" experience (and save yourself the stress of cooking for them, too.) The Maltby cafe is my favorite place for breakfast in all of Seattle. Delicious food in generous portions, tasty coffee, friendly wait staff who know what they're doing, reasonable prices, and a homey atmosphere all add up to put this at the top of my list. The downside to its popularity is that there's usually about a 30-45 minute wait for a table, but this time is easily spent browsing the shops across the parking lot, or sitting on the front porch steps in the sun. They're very kid-friendly--I'd take small children here any morning. A great spot!

On my last day in Seattle, I went to the Maltby Cafe that I read so much about. I will say that going to this cafe really started my last day off right! The breakfast was great! Just wish that I could have had enough room to try one of the great cinnomon rolls availible! Looks like they were a real hit, as they were all gone from the shelf by the time that I left!
If I come back to Seattle, this will definitely be a breakfast stop for at least one of the days that I'm there!

Hearty doesn't even cover it---these breakfasts are mammoth. It's a cozy, country place. But the wait can get a little too long. I've had to wait over an hour and a half, and that's really pushing it.
