As I looked over other reviews written on this site for Chutney's I am amazed that they are either excellent or poor. No in between.

Sadly I ate there on one of the one star occasions, and one star is being generous. The five of us went for my birthday today and after I was kept waiting for 15 minutes in the lobby with blaring music, I was escorted to our table. Upon sitting down I noted the tablecloth was filthy, and the (paper) napkins were crumpled as if they were taken off another table. (gross).

We waited another 15 minutes and I finally had to get up to ask for menus. We were missing silverware so up again I went....This went on for the ENTIRE meal. We had to ask for bread, water, coffee, etc.

I would have overlooked this if the food was at least decent. I had the Chicken Biryani. Rice Biryani would have been a more apt description. My mother had the same dish and also the chicken was almost absent.

There were items on their online menu that were not on the actual restaurant menu. I asked for coconut ice cream and was given orange sherbet instead.

I eat Indian food all the time and I will NEVER return to Chutneys and will discourage anyone I know from going. It was terrible.

Cons: Dirty, Slow service, Below average Indian food

I am a regular at Chutneys and I absolutely love the food. The service is a little slow at times but the food is definitely worth it. The Burg Mahar is fantastic and I love how you can order it customized to the level of hotness you want.

The food was ok, no real complaints there. The waiter was aloof and inattentive. I ordered vindaloo which is a curry. In most restaurants you go to a curry comes with rice with no extra charge since the curry itself is just a sauce. At Chutneys I was brought a side of rice (a small side of rice at that), no problem there until my bill arrived. $2 for the rice. It was not mentioned anywhere on the menu that rice was extra nor was I asked if I wanted rice along with the meal.

Bottom line, the service is terrible, see the other reviews, I'm not the only one that feels this way. Go to other restaurants in the Eastside, their food is just as good and they actually appreciate your business.

Had a satisfying meal in a classy restaurant after a long time .The attentive service ,the food and ambiance were a class act.,despite being short staffed, everything was so lovely.
The owner does get a bit touchy feeley, and just parties with friends while the waiters strive to deliver. The chef has a magic touch.

Excellent food, just right as far as the spices went.Good recomendations by Glen the manager, who went out of his way to prepare a special menu for us despite being very busy, found the time to ensure everything was spot on.My director was very impressed, even offered him a job in our company with better wagesand terms, but he politely declined saying he was very happy where he was.
This is now our new favourite restaurant.

I've been to Chutney's many times, both to dine-in and for take-out at dinner time. The decor is simple but nice. The food is usually very good, my favorites are Chickpea Veggie Fritters (they are like pakoras but more flavored, mmm!) and Chicken Tikka Masala. The Tandoori Chicken and the roast lamb are usually good too. The Saag Paneer (spinach and paneer cheese) is somewhat bland.

The service was very good at first, but over the years it has become fairly slow. Some of the waiters are attentive and friendly, others seem not to care. It's more slow at lunchtime. This is not a huge drawback if you're ordering take-out, but is pretty annoying when seated.

The best part about Chutney's is that they actually make non-spicy Indian food that still tastes flavorful. A friend of mine is very sensitive to spice and this is the only place that can consistently make mild Indian food (everywhere else is variable).

If you want mild Indian food that still has flavor and seasonings, this is a good option.

The eclectic mix of flavors and assortment of Vegetarian food makes this restaurant one of my favorite lunch spots! Quick and attentive service.

I went for lunch with some colleagues and ordered a few appetizers before deciding on our entrees. They did arrive on time but were more greasy and bland than my 27-yr old Indian palate could accept! I refused to order lunch and just waited until my friends finished. I even spoke to the manager about how nearly-inedible the "mirchi" (our appetizer) was and he said, "Really? I just had a few of those in the kitchen and they were really good!"

What a thumping endorsement of ineptitude!

On October 29, 2008 we went to Chutney's in Bellevue to celebrate my wife's birthday. We were a party of 7 including 2 kids. There was one waiter at the time and it took around 10 minutes to get us a table (the restaurant was half-empty). Next it took us another 20 minutes to get the waiter's attention to put our order. Have you ever been to a restaurant where the waiter(s) are SO busy that you've to wave your hands and do other antics to get their attention ? That's exactly what we had to do. The food arrived rather quickly and was fine (maybe our expectations got lowered after the ordering ordeal that anything normal felt good). We're now ready to leave and the waiter got us a check with 18% gratuity added automatically. I called the waiter and showed him that in the menu it was mentioned that a gratuity of 15% will be added for parties of 8 and more. His response was it's an old menu and that section was now modified to be party of 6 and more (not to mention about the change in percentage). IMHO, THIS WAS JUST OUTRIGHT LOOTING, ON TOP OF WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE. I told the waiter we may have to report to Better Business
Bureau of this activity and he got back that "we're not doing anything illegal" - not sure if he understands that a business that quotes a certain price and charges a different one is far away from being legal. After this experience (and reading many such bad customer service reviews), I've decided not to go to Chutney's until the management changes its attitude drastically.

I travel alot and been to indian restaurants over the US... Yesterday I was looking for somewhere I can have a good veg. meal therefore figured I would try an indian. Got there a little before closing and the service was rude and the food was not worth it. I was looking for a nice quality place and this was not the one. Would not recommend... try somewhere else.

I must agree with the last two reviewers - this place is horrible and not worth your money. For the lunch buffet today, I waited 10 minutes to be seated. Then as a single diner was completely ignored by the older gentleman who seemed to be the head waiter. I had to ask THREE times for naan, while the table of men next to me who sat down after I did were give their's promptly. Literrally, 20 minutes after I sat down - I finally got a basket.

The food, oh, where do I begin. All chicken dishes, even in sauce, were as dry as possible. Everything else, except for a meatball dish, was tasteless. Oh, and a Caesar salad? In an Indian restaurant? Didn't have it, but it looked soggy and wilted.

Back to the horrible service - water was never refilled, had to ask for the check while being ignored. I can't believe this place is in business. In a nutshell - avoid Chutney's at all costs.

So, you walk in and have to stand there for awhile before you even get seated. We watched the staff hang out and talk in the corner for 5 mins before anyone came over to seat us. (the room at that point only had 2-3 tables full) No apology and the guy who sat us had the worst B.O. (NOT very appetizing) Then we wait even longer to get our order taken by our waiter. My particular meal I ordered Medium (3 stars). Our meal finally came after 30mins or so and mine was SO hot I could barely eat it. I like hot food but this was intense. I wanted to have it taken back but knew it would take another 30mins for a new portion to arrive so I decided against it. Once our food came we were promptly forgotten about. We couldn't get the check-I tried waving one of the waiters over but they refused to come. Finally, I asked the busser to get our check. Later that night my husband got sick, and I got sick the next morning. I am a serious foodie and I highly recommend that you never go to this restaurant. Worst service I have ever received in my life, and the food was DEFINITELY not worth it-especially when it makes you ill.

I didn't wanted to go to Chutney of Bellevue after my horrible experience at Chuttney of Seattle but for my friend, I had to go. They have a good bar and we ordered Tandoori platter, taste was amazing but it had only six piece of meat in it. I ordered chicken biryani, it hardly had any chicken in it and the worst part, rice was tossed in red tomato sauce. Now cmon, since when biryani is cooked in tomato sauce??? and it was a sweet tomato sauce. My advice, stick to appetizers and drinks, NEVER ever go for the main course. they are not cheap, it will hurt you bad.

I got to say that this one of the priciest Indian restaurants I have been too and I have been to some pretty pricey ones in LA. For the price, the service and food are not worth it at all. I would rate the food average or slightly below average. My biggest complaint is it has THE worst service. I ordered spicy food and ended up drinking all my water and when I asked for more they did not bring it until about 10 mins later (and there were less than 10 customers at that point). I was almost dead at that point. NEVER GO HERE.

I went there for dinner. The food was poor. The appetizer I had was Bombay Tikki, which was quite good, but everything else I ordered was quite poor, except for the naan which was fine. The service was abysmal; it was almost impossible to get the attention of the waiter, even though there were only two other tables occupied while I was eating. At one point had to ask for the same thing twice as the waiter forgot to bring what I asked for. At some point during my meal, a different waiter started serving me, for no apparent reason. One of the two waiters apparently preferred standing in a corner and chatting on a cell phone instead of looking out for the customers' needs. At the end of my meal, I asked for the check at the same time as my dessert. Neither of the waiters showed up to take my payment. After waiting for a while, I had to go to the front to pay up as I was fed up of waiting. I highly recommend that you go elsewhere.

Have eaten at top and high end Indian cuisines across the world-New Delhi, London, Paris, Chicago, Boston, NYC etc and let me tell you-this is the best food we've ever had. Service is top notch, ambiance is classy and high end. Try their Chiken Tikka Masala or Baigan Burtha or Bhindi Masala - all these are just over the top delicious. Owner and servers were very curteous, professional and made sure we were comfortable dining there. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Seattle, only 11 miles from the city. Will be surely eating there everytime I am in Seattle area.

As an avid Indian food enthusiast, I can say without reservation that Chutneys is the best Indian in Bellevue. Granted, I haven't eaten everywhere, but since moving here last year I've done my due diligence in finding the best Indian food around. Chutneys is it, hands down.
As for the service, I can say that Chutneys has always been busy, no matter what day of the week I've gone there (a good sign, in my experience). Service has been about the same as any other busy restaurant--no better, but certainly no worse. I find it particularly irksome and unhelpful that a few disgruntled reviewers deemed it necessary to get in an extra dig by claiming that, in addition to the poor service they received, Chutney's food was "average." That's simply not the case, and certainly not in Bellevue where average Indian food abounds.
Chutneys is a bit more creative with their dishes than more traditional Indian restaurants. The ingredients--especially the cuts of meat--are of a higher quality than most other places I've been (if you've ever bitten into a stringy, grizzly piece of meat, you know what I'm talking about). The price is a little higher than the average, but worth it. The ambiance is more upscale than traditional.
My recommendation is to give Chutneys a try if you're looking for the best Indian food in town. If you're looking for the fastest service, try McDonalds.

We waited about 15 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge us to seat us. It was only till there was a line of several people waiting did they seat us. There was no apology for the wait either. We then sat for another 15 minutes before we had to flag down the busboy to find a waiter to take our order. We then ordered our food and waited about 20 minutes while others who sat after us were served. We sat there for so long that at one point, another waiter asked if we were interested in dessert. We haven't even received our appetizer yet. Then we look over to another table of 4 people to find that they were being served by 2 waitstaff. I was amazed by the varying levels of service. I left there very frustrated and disappointed.

This place is the best place to go. The owner has opened restaurants all over the world and this time he has perfected the place, Open Kitchen - You can see how the food is made fresh, right in front of your eyes. Romantic Lighting sets the mood, Great Indian Culture shown with stautes of all the famous Indian Legends. The spice level on a 5 star basis and you chose what you want, and the food is made however you want it to be made. The staff is extremely humble. It is the best place to be if you live on the other side of the bridge and dont want to drive down to seattle where you can have more choices. I HAVE BEEN COMING HERE SINCE 2001 AND I HAVE ALWAYS WALKED OUT OF THIS PLACE MORE THEN SATISFIED

One of the best experiences I have had. They serve many varieties but best of all they treat you well. Amazing food quality and well made. Moreover, one of the very few restaurants who have an open kitchen. The owner ensures to pay a lot of attention to all his guests and makes it a very lively environment! Worth a visit for sure to all those who have not yet been there.

PROS: Good food, open kitchen, clean and nice ambience
CONS: Sometimes get too crowded!!

Went there for the buffet last weekend. The food was ok: not nowhere close to some other indian places in the area.. However the service is really terrible. They do not have bread in the buffet area, and bring it directly to your table. We got one basket (~one piece per person) when we got there. After that, the servers basically disappeared. They were chatting in one corner and ignored us. Finally one of use walked up to them and asked for some nan and was asked "how many"!! After that, we had to wait about 15-20 minutes before they came with the nan, by when of course we had mostly finished eating (rice).
I am not going to this place again.

Best North indian food you can have in the seattle area and on top of that it also has the best service and nice clean well arranged place. 7 days a week they also has a lunch buffet thats excellent too.. but the best part is the dinner and the quality of the food server. It's the best indian restaurant i had been in seattle area

PROS: must visit to verify
CONS: none noted

Well, Taste the food to believe it. I don't agree with offensive reviews by DDev or others.
Prime location of Bellevue DownTown. Ample parking space and no chaos to driveto this place. Close to Microsoft, Major offices in Bellevue ,Seattle Downtown. I405, 520 is round the corner.
The food is great, it is close to home(authentic) and I feel they have better choice in both vegeterian and non vegeterian cuisine than any other restaurant I have been to.
Nice place for lovely dinner with your girlfriend/wife, or for big lunch/dinner parties and family gettogethers. The service is great. Good chefs who really take good care of ya. Service is awesome. They never make you wait. Buffets are filling and good value for money. Experience it yourself to come up with your own reviews. Overall, I would give it ***** ( On a 5 Star rating) and all the way thumbs up.

There's a reason why there are so many negative reviews of this restaurant....it sucks. Although the food is average, the service and staff are horrible! The staff are arrogant and ill mannered. There are several other indian restaurants with better food and far, far, far better service...don't waste your time and money at chutneys.

Waited an inordinate amount of time for service. Finally, when server arrived, asks simply what we want to order (no request for drinks, even though we were intending to order wine). Noticed the host going around all night visiting other tables and ignoring ours (assume it's because we're Indian and he feels he doesn't need to make the effort). When the food finally arrives, the saltiest chicken tikka masala I've ever tasted (had to return, redone was fine). Other dishes were fine but nothing special. On asking for the bill, waiter suggests we can take the remainder to go. We said fine, he grabbed a styrofoam container left it for us to pour the leftovers into. I would expect that kind of service in a neighborhood ethnic restaurant, not one the purports itself to be upscale dining with waiters running around in French service aprons.

We waited for 10 minutes (on a not so busy night) before they seated us. The server came late - did us a favor by taking our order. We complained to manager - he appeared to listed and then we heard him smirk on his way back. Food came after about 35 minutes - lukewarm and tasteless - appeared to have been reheated in the microwave. We left a poor tip and got the third degree.

WILL NEVER EVER GO THERE AGAIN

I've had Indian food in the past, but I never enjoyed it that much. Not until I visited Chutneys in Bellevue! I never liked lamb, but the owner/manager was so great in making recommendations that I tried their homemade cheese fried appetizer to lamb to the vindaloo dishes. I've been eating their every week now. I constantly have craving for their dishes! Their drinks are great, too! I personally like the gin and tonic.

In our experience, the food was strictly OK. No one came to our table with water after the first 30 mins. No one came to take the order for another 30 mins. The food didnt come for 45 mins - 1 hour. And food wasnt anything special. When we expressed our concern - The owner and staff were very unhelpful. Instead of being apologetic, they were rude. There are much better Indian restaurants in the vicinity. This was inspite of the fact that it wasnt a busy evening for dinner on a weekday. Terrible Experience. Would never go there or recommend to any one.

Indian food and hospitality at it very worst - that is the most accurate way to describe Chutneys. Food was oily and tasteless, servers were extremely inattentive ad somewhat rude and the menu was overpriced for the value it delivered. To top it all, when we left a poor tip, we got the rudest treatment. NEVER EVER GO THERE AGAIN
