The bad experience seemed mostly aimed at one person. 'The big over sized guy who demands tip' I know the man, and he is not the owner but a waiter.

Having gone to this establisment on two seperate occasions, I think I have all the information to give an educated unbiased review. The first time I went to Genghis Khan, I thought the food was ok ( not great , but not bad either). The problem was when the check arrived. My friend and I were hugely overcharged for our dinner. When we brought this to the waitresses attention in hopes that she would rectify the mistake, the owner a very large angry intimidating man, came over to our table and began swearing at us about the bill. I was shocked and floored. I could not believe the owner would scream at customers about the restaurants own addition mistake. The first time going there should have taught me a lesson, however another friend of mine asked me to meet her there for lunch and since our time was limited, I agreed to meet her. The food was cold when it arrived to the table and had no flavor whatsoever. The beef with snowpeas I had ordered, had very little meat in the dish and was nothing more than vegatables. Once again, when the bill arrived at our table, we were both overcharged. I can honestly say that I gave this restaurant a fair chance to impress me with their food and service and the opposite is true. The service stinks. The food is cold and unflavorful . Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this place. It should close its doors!

I have been here many times and I swore I would never go there again but had to because it was a business lunch of not my choice. Same experience as others. They really do not want you to order off the menu. One time a friend asked a question about the bill being over charged and a tall big man who works there or the owner was rude and spoke in a very rude tone to our face in his native tongue. Once I had the bowl buffet and could not finish it and asked for a container...and she did give it to me rudly and told me no buffet take out. So, I have to eat everything in my bowl or throw it away? It is already paid for. They bring the bill after you order and before you eat. They do watch you like a hawk at the buffet table and make you feel like your stealing or something. I get the feeling they do not like Americans. They are cold, unfriendly and down right rude every time. This is my first and only time I have ever wrote a review for anything but I really think that if people stopped going to this place maybe they would learn that it is the customer paying their bills and no customers, no income....so treat your customers at least a tiny bit of respect would be an improvement. Stay away. The service will ruin your meal anyways because the food is good enough but Milwaukee has tons of good places to go and enjoy both the food and experience.

As with most of the comments, the service is AWFUL. I've been going here for at least 8 years now and I can say that if it wasn't for the great food, there would be no way I would go back.

Problems I've had:

Literally demanding a tip. Generally at buffets you don't even leave tips?

Doing their best to avoid getting me my 1 free refill. Not only that, but they remind you that you only get one free refill very rudely.

Being rushed out the door.

Now, I will say that the food is good, and there is one lady who is very nice that has worked there for awhile. Other than that, run.

I was under the impression that Mongolian BBQ was a sit down style restaurant. However, on our most recent trip there, we were rushed in and out in less than 20 minutes. We were only two people on a Saturday afternoon during a very unpopulated time of day. Yet, they rushed us so badly that we barely had our food on the table before they put the bill on the table, and called attention to it several times, as if we had no intention of paying it.

We received NO menu at any point, and were basically told we wanted the buffet. We had to flag down the owner(?) to order some egg drop soup, to which he brought out only one bowl when we clearly ordered two. We had to practically beg him for the second bowl, and he seemed annoyed for evening asking for what we ordered for.

Never mind the fact that the bill came insanely early--my problem is with the fact that he stood over us and made us feel incredibly awkward until we threw a credit card at him just to make him go away. We left him the bear minimum tip for his lack of attentiveness, his rude service, and the way they were rushing us out for no discernible reason. They wouldn't break down the bill for us; it just said "$22.15", so we have no idea what we were being charged, especially since we never saw menus or pricing.

Here's the way it works: You treat your patrons well, they leave happy, they come back. But here's the way it is at this restaurant: they treat their customers like garbage, they get disgruntled, and they never come back. I'll be shocked if they're in business come this Christmas.

I have been to the Mongolian Barbeque at least 10 times, and not once have I experienced the "rude" side of the place that everyone keeps talking about. Not saying that it doesn't happen, because it very well could be happening. Just never to myself. I do agree that the place has kind of an odd vibe to it along with the management and wait staff. The cooks are incredible and always have great attitudes. I have NO problem leaving a tip for the men with the big sticks around the grill. I can say that if the server ever pressured me for a tip, I would leave NOTHING. They barely do anything!

The food and the experience of the buffet is what keeps me going back there. I plan on taking some friends there soon to share in my addiction to the Mongolian Barbeque! I definitely recommend it, but just know that you have to go in with a guard up toward the wait staff and management.

The food is really good. The service is insanely rude. I made sure the host/ water boy(?) saw that I picked up his tip (for....water....) and put it back into my wallet. Harassed to leave right after we were done eating; no one was waiting for a table; and they were not close to closing time. Dude cursed me in Mongolian I think. Stupid water boy.

I'm absolutely addicted to mangolian, and what they have there is pretty good. Not nearly as good as BD's at Bayshore, but decent mongolian BBQ. The prices are maybe a smidge high for a pretty bare bones buffet.

I have to agree with everyone else her about the service though. I too have been harassed for tips... I'm surprised so many people here have similar stories. I don't go there anymore. If I did, I'd probably just get it to go.

Well I went with a friend of mine there since she had the idea to go. We both read the reviews and still figured we would give it a chance since majority of the reviews were from 2008 and before.

Yep, staff was horrible! Ok well it was possibly the owner and some woman,...and she was out right awful! We sat there (now like I said never been there before) and sat there and sat there and finally my friend asked for a menu.,....same thing as the reviewer way down below...she gave her grief about it 'you want buffet?' 'possibly but we want to see our options' you know...i almost wonder if they don't train their 'cooks' to even make the meals on the list!!!! And whatever that round thing they cook it on......no wonder I got sick as hell afterwards!!! I can write a book and all the bad experiences we had there last night.

Bad bad bad bad! First and last time!!! How they are still in business I will never understand!!

My wife and I have eaten here several times and we enjoy it. I like being able to pick my own items of the bar to have them grill it right in front of me. MMM good. We've never, never had any problems with the wait staff as some many posts here have mentioned. I don't know what that is about.

I am a repeat customer, always enjoy the food, service is generally cold and weird. Over time the staff seemed to warm up to me but then, out of nowhere, they pulled the old Mongolian switch-back on me. Now they seem to hate me. In fact they seem to harbor some deep resentment about my presence in their restaurant. So if that's how they want to play, then I shall play... I'm giving them the old Mongolian middle finger, thumbs down!

STAY FAR AWAY!! Rudest treatment I've *ever* experienced at any restaurant. We visited on the evening of 12/5/08. They would not give us menus when we came in and even when we asked for them they gave only my 1 friend a menu and left the rest at a nearby table so we had to fish them ourselves! They were extremely pushy trying to tell us what to eat (pushing their BBQ "buffet"). They offered my other friend some soup and she asked if it was included with the chicken fried rice and the guy said yes and was running his mouth so much I don't think he even heard her question, so when we got the bill they CHARGED us $2.50 for the eggdrop soup and when we asked for that to be taken off the bill the guy started very loudly and rudely arguing with us and said IT'S NOT FREE. Well we ASKED if it was included and he said yes so obviously he's a FRAUD. They also overcharged us on other stuff and refused to break the bill down so we know exactly what they charged. ($30 for 1 BBQ buffet, 1 appitizer, 1 fried rice and 1 soup???). Also, it was only 9pm and they started turning off the lights to push us out! (They close at 10pm on Friday!). The guy who was so rude to us I think was the owner. He was also lurking by the tables waiting to take our money and didn't want to give us any changes (kept asking for a tip, even after ARGUING with us). Needless to say, me and my friends would NEVER EVER go back here nor recommend this place. The food was OK, but i've had better on all counts. The lady who was our server was excellent however, and she was nice - too bad she has a jerk for a boss (We heard him yelling at her in a chinese dialect in the room over).

I've eaten at Genghis Khan at least 500 times. Since I use to office near the restaurant for 10 years (50 X 10 years), I at there at least once every week and one time ate there 5 times in one week. Highly not recommended eating there daily.OK so the service sucks. I experienced the bad service a number of times and did stiff them on tips once - not recommended....However, the food is great is great and makes it worth the trip. If you get to know the staff they become friendly and remember you. When I now walk in they say "Diet Coke" and set the table for me.Don't ask for a doggy bag and don't expect a deal. After 500 meals you would think I would get a comp. NOPE. I got one doggy bag and that was because the friend I was with was smoking hot.Look past the language barrier, bad service and enjoy the food! Its worth the nine bucks.

Khan's was one of the first Mongolian restaurants I ever ran into, and I can easily say that I developed a love for the format while eating there. After selecting uncooked items off the buffet, you hand your food over to be grilled, and watch as they cook your food on a huge circular grill. The cooks are amazing, and do a consistently excellent job - be sure to leave a few bucks in their tip jar. Your dinner ends up being something that you can design to your own tastes, and is (if you made good choices) very good food. I strongly suggest making multiple small trips up and trying different combinations.

Unfortunately, in recent years, the staff has become very pushy about tips. Being a small business owner, I occasionally take certain business partners out to dinner, and we have a long established routine where I pay the bill and a partner leaves the tip. Apparently they got a "poor" tip, and they ran out the door after me and accosted *me* about the tip. After that, I started getting the cold shoulder and poor service, and so I would tip accordingly, and they were again aggressively rude several more times. I finally got disgusted and stopped patronizing the place. Come to think of it, it's not quite clear why you should feel obligated to give them a 20% tip when all they're doing is bringing you your drinks and clearing your dirty plates.

Fortunately, there's been a plethora of alternatives in recent years, although only one is close. There's a chain by the name of Khan's in Minneapolis, beautiful. There's a chain by the name of HuHot up in Appleton, great food but an asterisk by their service record. And there's the very unusual bd's Mongolian Grill out by Bayshore, which has the odd format of putting your sauces on your food during the final seconds of cooking, which doesn't seem to work as well, but their selection is huge and great. As a result, Genghis Khan has been losing out on our business for a while now.

If you don't mind the possibility of having waitstaff get uppity with you over tips, I still highly recommend their food. The place is tiny and has a very unusual feel to it.

When I went to leave I was treated very rude. We got the bill and the tip was included. As I was counting out my $9.00 (which is very expensive for a lunch), the waiter was standing over me. I did not think much of it until I got up to leave, he started verbally abusing me for not leave another tip. Since when do restaurants demand tips and double tips for that matter. There are plenty of restaurants out there that treat customers with respect. Don't patronise places of business that treat you bad. Unbelievable, I was never treated like that at a restaurant. I will never go back.

I love the mongolian BBQ here. You put all your meat, vegetables, noodles and sauces in a bowl and the chef cooks it for you on a big grill. Then you can eat more on the small buffet that has rice, eggrolls other dishes etc. If you want to get more meat in your bowl the trick is to smoosh the frozen meat down with your fist. Otherwise you bowl gets full too quickly. Service is good but they don't all speak fluent english which is kind of what you would expect.

The mongolian grilled food is wonderful. It is too bad that the service is so poor. We went with a large group (10 people) and they were incredibly rude to us. Three of the 10 had gastric bypass surgery so really can't eat the "all you can eat" because our stomachs are too small. We asked that we could get a single "to go" portion and eat it there, while the other 7 people ate the all you can eat. It is $9 for a single trip to go (I've done that many times). They totally refused and then stalked us through the entire meal. Then, they added on a huge tip! They really didn't do anything for us except walk around us constantly because they thought we were up to something. We were not trying to do anything shady. Most buffets will offer a one trip to go and let you eat it there and take the rest of your one trip home! I would never recommend this place unless you're carrying out. I wish there were other options for Mongolian Grill!

PROS: Good, Hot, Fresh Tasty food
CONS: Horrible Service

One of my favorite places to eat - unique and flavorfull!

Get the buffet, their specialty. This is no ordinary buffet, it's an experience. You chose the ingredients in your dish and they cook it for you on their Mongolian Barbecue - a large round metal cooking surface. It's quickly cooked (takes about a minute) and fun to watch, the only utensil they use is a large wooden stick to push around the food, and to skillfully scoop it into a bowl.

Since you choose your ingredients and sauces, you control the flavor of your dish from savory to spicy. Heed the warning not to use more than two sauces at one time, the flavors blend well in pairs but any more than that and the flavor is too busy.

As with the sauces, do not mix in too many things. The flavors tend to work best with no more than four different ingredients (not including the meat and noodles).

If you're new to the restaurant, try the dinner buffet where you can get refills and try different combinations. Do not make the mistake of overlaoding your first dish - advice I wish I could follow. You will try to eat it all, you will be full and you won't be able to try out a different combination. Also try to avoid using too many noodles - they are filling and add no flavor.

I have also been asked for a tip (not at the barbecue, at the table) before it was time to give it. I was offended and left a smaller tip than I would have. I'm not sure why this is the case, but the food is so good I know that I will be back.

PROS:
CONS: peanut allergies- buffet contains peanuts and is cooked on a communal grill

The food is really good.it is a buffet where the food is cold, you put it in a dish, and they cook it in front of you. it is really tasty. there are no refills on soda.. there are no seconds in the lunch hour. and one day I was there.. they rudely asked my boyfriend for a tip.. We were gonna tip.. untill they asked..
