My wife and I ate there on Saturday August 14.
The food and service were both EXCELLENT.

I don't know when the others ate there, but I will be back and definitely recommend it. (And no, I don't work there or have any other connection to it.)

I will keep this short and to the point! If you are reading good reviews on Cafe Belwah they are fake reviews or the people are morons! This place is TERRIBLE! The food is simply fair at it's very best! They try to come off as a classy/hip place but they cut way to many corners in the kitchen!

The food is low quality and a total disappointment! I have dined there 3 times and it gets worse each time. NEVER again!

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

I have eaten at Belwah a few times and not only was the food delicious but we had awesome service as well...Some people may complain about their food taking to long, or their server being inexperienced, and if so you may as well go through the drive through at Mcdonalds because then no one will have to read about your unnecessary rants and you will also save the time and money, good food takes time and patience and good service for such an extensive list of food and alcohol takes time as well, trust me I would know I have worked at a high class restraunt as well, so I thought I would just add my little insight on my Belwah experience and highly recommend that anyone who is willing to try something new and tasty in a beautiful environment should definitely take a visit to Belwah (preferably for dinner) and as for the people that have nothing better to do with their time than to bash on a place that has always tried to provide good service to the best of their ability should just go pay $500 on a five star restaurant that will give you close to the same experience!

I have been to Cafe Belwah three times and swear I will never return again. I should have learned my lesson after two long, horrible lunch breaks but a coworker and I decided to give them one more chance. Third time's a charm, right?

Wrong.

Where do I even begin... After being seated by an unfriendly hostess, it took several minutes to be originally approached by a server. Then came the painstakingly awkward task of listening to him bumble, mumble, and stumble through the specials and soups of the day. Seriously, he seemed like he had no idea what they served there (and I know he's worked there a while... I've seen him in there the previous two times). It was so awkward. We each ordered the Club 500... a simple club sandwich. Very easy and quick to prepare. However, the food took absurdly long to come out (like it had the previous two times as well). The sides that are served are terrible. I've had both the caesar potato salad and the pineapple coleslaw and they were the worst potato salad and coleslaw I have ever had. I'm not exaggerating. The 500 sandwich is quite good, but everything tastes a litle worse when you are irritated. Our server, who only had two tables, did not stop by our table once during the meal and then after we were finished, we waited 10 to 15 more minutes for him to return to ask us if we wanted anything else. I never even had a chance to flag him down because he was nowhere to be found (I'm guessing he was just sitting in the back). On top of that he never once smiled or acted interested at all. The other server on staff (who I've had before) was just as mopey and awkward to her tables.

The table next to us complained about their food, and another table waited at least 5 minutes before being greeted by their server (there were 4 tables of people in the whole restaurant with two servers.. not hard). I work very close to Belwah and every time I have gone there on my lunch break I have been late back to work, and it has taken longer than if I go all the way across town to Applebee's.

The positive reviews on here are all from 2006 and 2007 and it is my understanding that Belwah has taken a nosedive over the past year or so due to increased prices, decreased food quality, and tolerance of incompetent staff. I do not recommend anybody sit through the agony of a Belwah experience. Walk a few blocks to Bagels & More or Denali's. I've particularly had very enjoyable experiences at Denali's.

Edited to address Amber T.'s comments:

First of all.... holy run-on sentence. They're called periods. Hard to read. Anyway...

"Some people may complain about their food taking to long, or their server being inexperienced, and if so you may as well go through the drive through at Mcdonalds"

- This sentence pretty much speaks for itself. I should be able to go ANYWHERE to eat, and get a knowledgable server and food in a fairly timely fashion. Why do I have to throw that out the window when it comes to the overly pretentious "Belwah"? And, like I said, I ordered the Club 500. A club sandwich doesn't take a long time to make. In fact, there's nothing to even "make" on it. Just prepare!!

"and as for the people that have nothing better to do with their time than to bash on a place that has always tried to provide good service to the best of their ability should just go pay $500 on a five star restaurant that will give you close to the same experience!"

Best of their ability? Well then, according to you, their abilities are pretty terrible. I don't have high expectations... especially in Beloit. I simply assume that if you are open for lunch, and you only have two other guests in the restaurant, that you can take my order quickly and bring me my non-cooked food quickly. Apparently, I have to pay $500 for that according to this "reviewer".

If you want to do yourself a favor, take my word for it. There are a number of MUCH better eateries in the stateline area. In fact, I just discovered a place with a similar menu to Belwah, but with a MUCH better lunch experience... The Little Bistro just down the street. Also, as I previously stated, Denali's is hands above Belwah in quality and service.

My co-worker and I went to lunch and the service was deplorable. The server had no knowledge of the menu or the drink list. She never once smiled and was so nervous she had trouble formulating words and sentences....she was very wooden and looked very uncomfortable. Why put someone like that out on the floor??
Once we finally got our food she never came back to ask how the food was or refill our drinks (which needed to be refilled before we even got our entrees). We each had the Tuscan salad, mine with pheasant, my co-worker with chicken. There were only 2 candied walnuts in each of our salads and the pears were not even close to ripe. They were bitter and crunchy. I only had 5 one inch long strips of pheasant while my dining companion had ample amounts of chicken breast (both meats were the same cost to add to the salad). I would have been more than happy to pay more if that meant getting more pheasant meat. These salads were not worth the price. We finally had to flag the hostess down to get a refill of our drinks and ask for more ice since we were sitting outside and it was rather hot. After being finished with our salads and waiting for the server to come back it had already been an hour. It took another 25 minutes to get the bill. Needless to say we didn't have time for dessert since we were already 25 minutes late for work. I spoke to the hostess upon leaving and we were just offered excuses. We are absolutely disgusted and will never be back!!!!

You can ALWAYS count on Cafe Belwah for excellent food, chic atmosphere with beautiful view of river, and good service. Their home-made vegetable chips and fries are exceptional along with their signature sandwiches. The raspberry chicken salad with mango is also one of our favorites. If you have not been there, do try it. Servers are friendly and prompt. Wed nights is music night, so even more fun.

Cafe Belwa is conveniently located on the Rock River in the historic downtown area. The outdoor patio overlooks the river and a historic mural detailing Beloit's industry. The food is excellent and is presented nicely. The staff is attentive and very knowledgeable on the extensive wine list. This is a great place for a romantic dinner. The restaurant is decorated very trendy and is a needed improvement for the dining choices in Beloit.

PROS: parking, great food
CONS:
