This place is a Milwaukee staple! Forget about McDonalds (I know I have) and Culvers. A&W is where it's at, folks. This place does burgers darn well for a "fast" food restaurant! Onion rings are awesome and the fries are good too. The hot dogs here are very good and probably the best you'll ever find in "fast" setting or even a true sit down restaurant. The coney dog is very tasty and reminds me of when I was a little kid and loved hot dogs. This place can make you feel like that because WI is so mainstream when it comes to food (sad and pathetic considering the ethnicity here) and A&W is simply a place that remains to be unchanged after decades of good food. Also, it's true, the root beer is frickin' so refreshing! Don't stop there though, get a classic float!!!

A great little place that most people may not know about but a place everyone should. Very accessible too!

Cons--Wait times (depending)
Pros--Everything!

This locally-owned A&W is a full-service sit-down restaurant, not just a traditional A&W root beer/ice cream stand.

Many locals have made this their breakfast spot of choice, in heavy competition with the Webb's across the street. A&W offers relatively inexpensive fare, including a "breakfast special" of two eggs, sausage or bacon, and toast all for $2.99 (previously $2.49), and the service is really fast, possibly due in part to the fact that the owner is usually in the restaurant. Lunch and dinner offers a full array of A&W menu items. For fans of A&W root beer, be sure to ask to have your meal upgraded to the large, where they'll bring out one of the largest mugs you've ever seen, filled to the top with root beer. The staff is attentive and very friendly. Having visited almost weekly for a long time, of course I've seen a goof or two. Since I read the paper while I'm there, one morning, I noticed I had gotten through the first section of the paper, and didn't have my food yet (it typically arrives much too quickly, like while I'm reading Page 1, which vaguely annoys me). Thinking this unusual, I kept quiet and it got to about a half-hour since I had arrived, when one of the longtime waitresses came up, somewhat flustered and extremely apologetic, and told me that somehow my ticket hadn't gotten to the kitchen. I told her flat out that this was fine with me, since I preferred to get some reading in before my food came. Now, I'm not *sure* of this, but it seems to me that when she takes my order now, my food often takes a little longer to arrive than it used to. It could be my imagination, I guess.

For whatever reason, the owner has opposed accepting credit cards, and this is one of an exceedingly small number of restaurants that does not accept cards.

Always FAST service, I've never had to wait more than a few minutes for my food. Everything is made fresh (except maybe the hot dogs which are on rollers and the french fries but they're always good) MUST try the Apple Pie Polar Swirl. It is INCREDIBLE, and limited time only. I've been eating here for 14+yrs

Edit 10/10/08
They do also take Credit and Debit cards (i think they have been for almost 2 yrs now) There is also an ATM machine right inside the door

You have to order your root beer in the cold, frosted, glass mug to get they full root beer experience. Another must is the coney dog which is with chili. The service is so fast there that I actually timed how long it took from the time I ordered until I got my food-1 minute and 53 seconds. They must have the fries and dogs already cooked but it is unbelievable. Mug of root beer, fries and coneydog is under 5 bucks.
