We enjoyed our meal on the deck but the man at this next table was so loud we couldn't talk. The waitstaff needs to be trained not to take away plates until everyone is finished eatingl I had my fork in my hand when she tried to talke my plate. Don't offer dessert until people are finsihed eating.

Chef Rene's is a fantastic restaurant! My husband and I drive about an hour to go there for dinner almost every week! The food is not like any where else. My husband loves the steaks and my favorite is the Chicken Cordon Bleu that the chef makes from scratch! Once you eat here, you'll definitely want to go back!

We live year round in Minocqua and have dinner at Rene's at least every other week, and sometimes more often. We've eaten at nearly every restaurant in town and many others in the area. (Not to mention the extensive dining I do when I travel to Chicago or New York or overseas.)

Rene's Back Bay Cove is by far our favorite in the area, whether it's for the best fish fry or for high-end seafood, steak, or duckling. The chef was trained at the New York Culinary Institute and it shows. Try the Confit of Duck or the Pork Tenderloin or the Ahi Tuna, but you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The appetizers are excellent too (especially the escargot and the bacon-wrapped dates), as are the desserts (recommend the flan, the chocolate obsession, or the dream cream puff.

As for the complaining party of seven below, my family sat next to theirs that evening and we have an entirely different take:

In the first place, it was a summer Friday, and Rene's is ALWAYS crazy on Friday--sometimes getting over 400 diners, which is why they can't take reservations except for very large parties. The hostesses do all they can to try to keep people informed, but it's difficult to predict seating times accurately when people sit down, discover the view, and decide they'd like to hang out all night.

That said, this was a very crowded night and the hostesses were having trouble keeping up. We waited a long time as well, but simply enjoyed the lakeside atmosphere because we understood that the restaurant had been "slammed." Which is what sometimes happens when you have a well-deserved reputation for great food.

The party of seven below was having none of it. Yes, they waited a long time--like many others that night. Then, when they did sit down they took it out on the young waitress, the hostess, and the bartender (who is not the owner) with one abusive comment after another, all the while demanding free appetizers and free drinks for the entire table (not just four). They were nasty and petty, letting everyone in the room know that they were from Chicago, "owned four restaurants," and would "ruin this place!" if they didn't get what they demanded.

When they were told that they weren't going to receive free appetizers and drinks since their situation wasn't unique (and probably also because they had been heavily drinking and were abusive already), the family patriarch jumped up and said they were leaving. At which point the guy closest to me knocked over his drink purposely, swore at the waitress and they all began to troop out.

I spoke (probably for everyone who'd observed the scene) to the group, telling them "Good riddance, please don't come back--the rest of us don't need you here.) Several other diners seconded me. The group that was leaving swore at me and left. Hope we don't see them again. (To be fair, several women in the group seemed to be embarrassed by the men, and didn't contribute to the problem.)

Rene's DOES get crowded on fish-fry nights, and the restaurant hostesses sometimes need to do a better job of trying to keep people informed and discouraging latecomers from hanging around when it's already a crazy night. I always feel bad for people who have to wait longer than they expect. But that's the nature of fish-frys during prime time in the best restaurants in Northern Wisconsin. Either come early--like at 5:00--or very late, or sit back and enjoy a few drinks.

That's what we do, and we've never minded a long wait for anything that comes from Rene's kitchen. And we've never had a long wait except on summer Friday nights.

The good news is that these folks and the other unhappy diners won't be back, so the rest of us can continue to enjoy the best restaurant in Northern Wisconsin in peace.

Took my family (7 adults), to the Back Bay Cove for dinner. Told we had a 40 min wait, so we had one drink and checked with the hostess after 40 min and was told not much longer. Had another drink at a cost of $30.00 and again and again we checked with the hostess. Finally waiting 2 hours we got a table. The hostess told us we can have a complimentary drink at the table do to the long wait. The waitress came to our table and we told her we had complimentry drinks coming because of the 2 hour wait. She stated she would have to check with the bartender manager and then the owner chef/cook before she could permit the drinks. Waitress returned and stated "the owner/cook will not permit the drinks". Bottom line, don't believe the hostess if you are told a 40 min wait as they only want you to spend money at the bar. I don't believe the Back Bay will remain in business under the current owner. Restaurants should be truthful about waiting times. There are many other very good restaurants in the area

Chef Rene serves up the finest food in the Minocqua area. We have tried just about everything on the menu and have never had any kind of complaint. Must tries are the seafood crepe appetizer, stuffed mushroom caps, anything for your main meal, and the strawberry schaum torte for dessert. The service is professional and friendly. If your in the area, make sure you don't miss out on one of the finest meals you've ever had!
