Since I was reviewing other restaurants, I saw a review for this establishment. The reviews looked good so we went and dined today (6-18) and my experience is as follows....

We entered through a smelly (decades of smoke residue) hall and into the bar area where that also filters into the main seating area. The smell in the bar area was horrible. The decor is very out of date and add a wait to that as well (no one there to greet us).

A woman had noticed us and eventually sat us. Don't get me wrong here, the wait wasn't more than a couple minutes. She offered a menu or the lunch buffet. My dining companion had the buffet (a smaller one compared to others but that's not a bad thing) and I had the fish fry. We also had an order of battered shrimp with bacon. It wasn't what I thought it was and the bacon taste was too overpowering over the shrimp. It was a bit overcooked as well. They are huge, so only have one or share one (however, an order is 2) it was more of an interesting looking food and actually tasty. I would not have it again.

I asked the waitress (only one there) what the fish was coated with. She said lightly breaded with cornmeal. I'm not a fan much of battered fish, so breaded is right up my alley. It was relatively inexpensive compared to many places at $7.49. It came with the typical items such as slaw, rye, fries and it featured 4 large pieces of cod.

The fry came and it was hot and didn't appear old at all. The fish was a bit to "fishy" tasting but good nonetheless. Two of the 4 pieces were to thick and it suffered a bit in the fryer (not burnt but a tad overcooked). The fries were fresh, hot and tasty. The fish was good and the tarter went nicely with it (one of the better tartars I've had). All in all, I'd recommend the fish fry but while concerning Chinese restaurant's fish fry's, Asia Restaurant on National Ave in New Berlin has them beat and I would say it's one of the best fish fry's around the Metro area (had it many times). The price of the fry here is pretty darn good considering the amount of good food you get. No bad aftertaste either.

The buffet was described to me as good but this person has had much better. The egg rolls are very large and delicious and so was the egg foo young. The gravy was a bit watery and salty her first helping but was supposedly better the second time up to the buffet. The price for the buffet is extremely reasonable and so were the lunch specials.

All in all, I'd give the place another shot but to order off of the lunch/dinner menu and get a real taste for this joint.

The waitress seemed bogged down a bit but they had a for hire sign for another (that is no reason for poor performance as she somewhat had).

Cons--Decor, Waitstaff performance
Pros--Fish fry and Buffet.

P.S, Will gladly update when a revisit has been completed.

China Inn has been a family tradition in my family for many years. The owners of China Inn are kind, friendly, and welcomes families with same children. Everytime i come into town, I make a point to goto the China Inn. There is only one other restaurant that I do that for, and that is an Italian Restaurant.
