Awful. Absolutely Awful. When I first found my place I was excited to be renting a pretty reasonable price for rent in an awesome neighborhood. However, the heater is by the ceiling and breaks when it gets below 20 degrees, which in Wisconsin, is a lot of the time. I did not know this until I had to call the building inspector to check my place. I had reported this problem to Apex and everytime there is a problem Apex is demeaning, bluntly rude and uninformed. If there is a problem be sure to be persistant and keep everything in writting with them. I've spoken to the other tenants in my building and everyone has the same problem. In order to keep their apartments with a bit of warmth you have to keep a space heater on all the time and as a result we've been paying 200-300 dollars in heat and electric a month. When I reported this problem the emails I've been getting in response to the situation were absolutely ridiculous and they insisted that my thermometer on my heater was on celsius and I was informed that 30 degrees celcius is actulaly 70 degrees Fahrenheit. When the building inspector came my apartment was 53 degrees Fahrenheit. After this experience I will never rent through their company again and I'm hoping for a refund in my bills and rent and hopefully an early end to my lease without additional problems.

This is why Apex Properties should be avoided at all costs!!

I moved out early because they allowed the basement to rot and mold. Instead of renting the place within a reasonable amount of time, they chose to renovate, including new flooring and additions. Like the previous reviewer, I moved in and had to spend a week cleaning, there were tampons in the bathroom and food and mold in the fridge, the previous tenants had left me the housekey on the countertop. I never got a check in form, but when i moved out, my family came and cleaned the place, we even washed the walls. I only used nail holes that were already there from the previous tenants, who had lived there for about 6 years prior. I personally lived there for 7 years and only called maintenance when absolutely necessary, regardless they always acted like I was insane.

The best example was when the water pipe in the kitchen burst and ws spewing gallons of water onto the floor. When I tried to fix it, there was no way, turning off the water main did not work... I called the emergency maintenance number, I had to call several times. Finally when i was enough of a pain, i got a call back. "Hey this is Labor day weekend, you will have to wait till Tuesday...."
It was Friday night.
I am pretty sure I bitched and got service on sunday, but I was hated from that point forth. How DARE I demand that there not be a man-made lake in the center of my sway-back kitchen floor!!??? I MUST be crazy.

The maintenance management are bullies, their attitude sucks. Anyway, when I did move out, I broke the lease and was told that a new tenant would be found. A gentleman's agreement if you will. However after all upgrades were complete I was served with legal papers demanding that I pay the remaining rent, approx $6,000.00 and then they demanded I was responsible to pay for new hardwood floors and the addition of an outdoor porch and other general upgrades. Basically their legal team saw a window of opportunity to write a blank check for renovations!!!!!!

I was simply too weak from the mold infused basement to fight. I hired a lawyer and negotiated them to a reasonable amount. They originally sued me for about 12 thousand dollars (I forked over approx 3 thousand dollars just to make them go away.)

I would have won the case, (remember, no check-in form?) but I had no energy to fight and was happy to escape that rotted hot mess with my life. The truly sad part of this review is that the Apex corp is owned by two brothers. Brian Bosben is a gentle hero of a man who has my utter respect and admiration. His brother Bruce on the other hand is a bulldozer, with undertones of misogyny. Bruce demands satisfaction, he overrides his brothers wishes regularly and runs the corporation the same way George W. ran this country. This business started when their father began building properties for his families future, when he passed, he entrusted his sons. I wonder if he knew the Cain and Able dichotomy that would become their business model. The BOTTOM LINE? Madison property management companies suck, so this one thinks it can follow suit. 1/2 the company is golden, and the other 1/2 is rotted. Brian Bosben, i suggest you escape from underneath your brother while you can. I think he has a real mean streak.

This is my worst experience renting with a property management company in the Madison are ever! I should have known after the property manager Nicole could not stick to an appointment or call us back when we were looking into the property. The Foxboro Condo's in Oregon were brand new, never lived in units. Beautiful. In the 9 months that i have lived here, the building has fallen apart and they cease to do anything about it. From moldy stairwells, dropping elevators, unplowed lots and residents treating the building like junk these guys at Apex are dropping the ball! Do not rent from these guys unless you want your calls to go unanswered, and the staff to be snotty and rude to you.

I rented retail space from Apex in the 2004 / 2005 timeframe to launch a start-up operation. They were very reasonable and fair about any issue that surfaced during our lease period. In some cases, they went the extra mile when they did not need to. Every employee we worked with was very good, responsive and personable.

I naively moved to Madison into an apartment managed by Apex last year. It was absolutely horrible and I'm so glad I finally got to move out. When I first got to the apartment it was filthy and not a single smoke detector worked in the entire place most didn't even have batteries in them. I was also given the wrong keys and locked out of my apartment for 2 hrs waiting for maintenance. When they came he said it was too expensive to call a locksmith and actually kicked down my door. After that he told me it would be fixed the next Monday (I am a female living alone and they want me to have my door wide open for the weekend???). I have so many stories I can even tell them in one review. Take my word you DO NOT want to rent from the slumlords of Apex rentals.

I would have never rented from Apex because their reputation in town is well known, but the property I live in was taken over by them mid-lease. Requests for maintenance are treated as a nuisance by office staff--I was told to look for another place to live because I asked them to send someone over to take out all the trash left by previous tenants. Everytime they come out to fix the coin operated washing machines, they raise the price to operate. Office staff is rude at best. Assuming you can ever get one to call you back.

I have lived at a number of places in Madison and like many of the other places in Madison, apex does a good job at giving prompt maintence. The staff at the main office could improve their skills at talking to other people, but they certainly make sure that your requests are taken care of.

They have a free emergency maintainence service which I have used a couple of times when some bats wandered into my house.

They have also been prompt with other maintainence issues that I have had over the past 2 years. All in all I would say that it is a decent management company
