This place had a good ambiance and good service; however, the food is overrated and bland. I spent $80 there between an entree, drink, and dessert and was disappointed with each course.

I took my boyfriend here last night for his special birthday dinner. This was the perfect place! The ambiance was great. Local veggies and spices. The only thing that I would suggest was that they put "Local " wines on their wine list. They say that they help support the local farmers etc, why not support the local wineries?
The food was GREAT. I had the Special, it was SKate fish. He had the Beef brisket. Both were great. We ordered the "featured" appitizer and it was great!
Our waitress was very nice and very informed. We will go back there in the summer because they have a deck and a patio with a great view of the river.
I bit expensive, but worth it.
If going on sat or sunday, Make a reservation!

My wife and I called at the last minute on a Friday and were fortunate to get a table. Seating on the patio was first come, first served, and there was a spot open. Our waiter, a young man, was extremely professional (noticed the table rocking and brought a wedge) and knowledgeable (helped me decide which of two wines were better for our meal). My wife always likes a steak, and this was no ordinary steak. She enjoyed the potatoe and vegetables accompanying them. I had the rib special--fantastic. The white corn bread and vegetables were also great. We were very happy with our selection of wine. Our server wanted to be sure that we heard the dessert options, and we were glad we saved room. The restaurant makes their own sorbets and they change weekly. We had the trio: strawberry vanilla, white nectarine with pomegranite, and blackberry. It was hard selecting our favorite one! There was a lot of activity there, enjoying both the patio views of the city and indoor dining. Everyone (retirement age, middle age, and young professionals) was having a good time and a delicious meal. My wife is already planning our next trip to Roots!

Roots is a wonderful little restaurant. Sunday Brunch is a special treat. The dishes are unusual, well-prepared and yummy. There are a number excellent vegetarian options as well.

With great expectations we made a reservation at Roots for a Saturday evening dinner. We were seated at a tiny table against a wall at the top of the stairs but we were certain that the food would be worth being uncomfortable. Not So. Appetizer, salad, soup, entre - each were just ordinary and uninteresting. The food was bland although described exotically on the menu. Summary - we found it to be nothing special for a rather high price. The waitstaff was very attentive and the service was fine. But we would not recomment this restaurant, nor would we return.

Fabulous! Locally owned. The food, and the presentation of food, is terrific. Love the fact that this restaurant has an organic farm in Cedarburg from which it gets much of its produce. Has a more expensive sit-down restaurant upstairs, and less expensive casual eatery downstairs.

I couldn't agree LESS with those that say that Roots is boring and unoriginal. I'm from the area and live in New York City, so dining in Milwaukee is always a gamble as to whether a restaurant will live up to the quality and creative vibe of a restaurant mecca such as New York. I'm pleased to say that it most certainly did.

Upon looking at the menu, I was instantly intrigued by their philosophy of locally grown, organic produce and natural ingredients. In a country full of toxic food additives and preservatives, Roots stands out for providing food that is not only delicious, but healthy for you too. Outside of that, the interesting combinations of ingredients, or "fusion", in various dishes was a nice change of pace compared to most other restaurants' "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude on food. The cucumber slices in the glasses of ice water was a very refreshing touch as well. Decor and service were spot on too. I highly recommend trying Roots one night and suggest sampling a few of the small plates selections from the back page of the menu. You won't be disappointed.

Pros: healthy, organic, beautiful views

Cons: smoking still allowed in restaurants

Roots is just another trendy, cliche on the already too trendy, too cliche Milwaukee restaurant scene. First of all, this city doesn't need any more "fusion" food. Second of all, there was no originality to the menu at all. You could go to any of the similarly one-syllable, one-word named restaurants: Sauce, Palms, whatever, and have an identical experience.

OK, so the food is boring. The service is worse. Since when did Milwaukee become such a dirty, hardened place that the entire hospitality industry forgot the point of the industry? There was little to no hospitality. Our bartender and server were boring and detached. The decor is the same as all the other trendy, cliche restaurants in this city: exposed brick, blah, blah, blah.

The only reason this restaurant is not entitled to a flat out zero is the view over the Milwaukee river, but that certainly will not entice me to visit this sad, boring restaurant again.

Pros: Cityscape view of the Milwaukee skyline over the Milwaukee River.

Cons: Just like Trocadero, Sauce, Vivo

Great food, great views of the city, but kind of hard to find for first timers. This restaraunt is great for going out with some friends but I don't believe you can not make reservations. They also have a lower lever called the Cellar which is really nice in the summer because you can sit on the patio.

Pros: Great city views of downtown area. Great website

Editorial from

Chef-owner John Raymond is an advocate for sourcing foods locally. Much of the menu comes from a six-acre farm north of the city or is grown right out back (the latter is true of strawberries and herbs). If that can't be arranged, then…
