You know.. I've shopped at Aquatics for *years*.. Those of you who complain about the trade in value of your fish - keep this in mind - they're straight up when they say they will only pay up to 25% of what they will sell it for, and this depends on how many others they have. They take in fish from *everyone* - what would you do?

Those that think their prices are ridiculously high - I've bought $1 fish there, and I've bought $150 fish there, and have yet to ever have one die, or infect my tank with a disease. If a fish looks "off", they quarantine it for approx. 2 weeks and will not allow you to buy it. You get exactly what you pay for - quality, healthy fish.

Very highly recommended. I will continue to make the hour+ drive any time I want to trade in, or purchase a new fish.

Used to love this place, but since I believe the entire staff is mostly high all of the time, its impossible to get anyone to help you or even know what you're talking about. I think that's the way the owners must like to run a business. Its too bad... a few years ago it seemed pretty great, but its pretty much a joke now.

OppeI have shopped here for many years and have recently moved to illionis.I drive almost 2 hours to buy my fish from there due to the fact that there are many pet shops that are far far worse than aquatics.aquatics has a very large selection and if thay don't have it they will get it.I bought a elephant nose fish there which I searched 4 states to find.they not only were able to get this fish out of season they got it within a week.as for tank condions if you think there tanks are dirt and all the fish are sick.I can direct u to a petshop that is way worse.the fish seem good there till u get them home and really see them under light and find out they have ick so bad u have a 30% chance they will live.so before u bash aquatics look around and see if u can find someone with the selection and qaulity of fish.and if they were to sell u a fish at cost they would be out of business.also the staff.yeah some are young and most don't have a degree in fish but they are human trying to make a living and doing what they love.so to aquatics unlimited I thank them for what they do

This store has a nice large selection but is way overpriced. They also give lousy trade credit. I had purchased a 3"tiger shovel nose from there for $49.99 and when I took him back at 13 inches in mint condition they offered me $10.00 for him while they had another one the same size half tore up for $70.00 sitting in their tank. I took it to Aquatic Emporium and they gave me $30.00. I will not shop here again!

I was just in the store looking at the marine fish. There was a large amount of red slime algae, cyanobacteria likely, in the tanks. That could transfer into your own tank despite all the care you can take to quarantine. I tried to follow the instructions in one of the ealier reviews and Amanda is no longer working at the store. There is no one with any marine biology background, or training other than learn as you go to ask question. Or, monitor stock adequately. Better luck making your purchases on line which is much cheaper despite the shipping costs. And, for live fish there is usually sometype of guarentee.
Do your research, contact marine or reef sites. Read wetwebmedia.

I know a lot about different fresh water and salt water fishes and what they need and how they need to be taken care of. I asked an employee there some marine fish questions just to see how they would respond even though I knew the answer and let me tell you, they were blowing stuff out of their butt that I have never heard of before. Not to mention the horrible customer service but their tanks are discusting with algae and red slime all over the place. The way they house their inverts and fish are awful! I would never recommend going to this store. I would recommend going down the road about 5 minutes and going in the Pet World. They selection is much better and their fish are at a reasonable price.

My background: I have been into marine aquariums for many years: both reef type and fish-invert aquariums. I love the vivid colors of saltwater fish and coral! I have educated myself by reading a variety of mainstream books on the subject.

The store: Fish is all they do. They have a broad selection of of marine and fresh water fish. Oh yes, they are expensive! They attribute this to the fact that they buy from distributors who treat reefs with respect when they collect livestock. For example, their collectors don't use cyanide, they only using nets in collecting and follow regulations set up to protect reefs. Whether this is true or not is anyones guess. From my own research, I have found that it would be virtually impossible for a store to know where their fish stock came from. Unfortunately, and ironically, fish that I buy from them don't seem to fair better than fish I have bought from any other stores.

Customer service: Average at best. Generally speaking, the staff definitely isn't trained in good customer service and communication skills. They have lots of young kids with some fish knowledge who work there. Yes, overall they have more knowledge than standard warehouse pet stores. But if you need reasonably reliable advice, talk to Amanda or Jim. However, if you're a salt water enthusiast always remember to do your homework before going to the store. You can always grab a book off the shelf for reference while shopping, as well. For fish compatibility advice trust Scott Michael's, "Marine Fishes." Grab a copy from their book section while perusing their salt water fish selection. The advice of store clerks doesn't always jibe with mainstream advice. Also, they won't give you all the subtleties that you need to know for compatibility. Good luck!

PS: Please pardon my anonymity. I frequently shop the store and they know me. This is a conscientious evaluation, but I don't want to experience any hard feelings.

This store is awsome. Not only does it have a large selection of fresh water and salt water fishes and plants, it also has the best, most knowledgeable staff. The fish they have for sale are of high quality and rarely have deseases. The staff there are not the ones who are there just to earn their wages - you can tell they enjoy this job! They also care about the welfare of the fishes they sell - they won't sell you fish if the conditions of your tank is not right. They are very knowledgeableand will answer question you have about problems with your fishes and tank at home. Their prices are not the cheapest - I usually buy fish food at the warehouse pet stores, but I definitely would only buy live fish at this store.

This is the best fish store in the area. You will find any kind of fish that you're looking for here. And they have a great selection of tanks and other products. The store is set up great, where you can see all of the fish very clearly. The staff really know what they're talking about. If you have any questions, just ask. They are always willing to help.

Clean, nice environment. Nice selection of fish. Helpful, knowledgeable staff. Quite overpriced - one of the most expensive fish stores in the city. Great place to go if price is not an object.

PROS: clean, good staff, nice fish
CONS: overpriced
