The Scene
Most Ballys stick to the basics for their design. Televisions broadcast silently above multiple rows of cardio machines; mirrored walls act as the primary decorative components. But thanks to high-energy television ads and low-impact membership premiums, this national fitness chain has steadily attracted a clientele bent on saving money while losing weight or gaining muscle.

The Workout
Using fairly standard strength-training equipment and/or racks well-stocked with free weights, the best of the trainers here, who are classified at four different levels, can be as skillful as those found at costlier gyms. For group classes, signature exercise options include Spinning and Powerflex, as well as a number of patented routines inspired by Tae Kwon Do.

Key Points

  • State-of-the-Art Equipment
  • Customized Fitness Programs
  • Easy-to-Join Membership

Ratings_icons Ballys lacks equipment repair, Maintenance, and or up keep in San Antonio

Randy M.

If the Milwaukee Ballys is as bad as a San Antonio Ballys you can bet that every Ballys in the country has the same problems. I have been a member of the San Antonio, 5819 NW Loop 410, San Antonio TX 78238, (210) 647-9600, Ballys Total Fitness, for the last 6 months. Many of there fitness machines have been less than functional from day one. I was told they have new equipment. That statement is not true. The machines must be at least 5 years old or more. When the club gets crowded you are forced to use them. They do not post signs stating functional problems. The SPA whirlpool has been down off and on for over 3 months. The public scale is down regularly with low battery. It looks like mold is on the walls of the wet and dry sauna. They rarely have cleaning rags and solution to clean after a workout. Whenever you ask why, you always get the same excuse, "they are working on the problem". My guess is they do not use our high workout fees for facility repairs or up keep. If you call to the Ballys main office you will not get a clear response. All they tell you is to talk to the facility manager. I personally feel that the manager at the San Antonio facility does not care about the people or the facility. Unless everyone complains nothing get repaired.

I have been going to this particular Bally's for 3 years now, 6 days a week. i find it really clean, especially the women's locker room. And....There is alot of new equipment since i called and complained a year and a half ago! Although the club is one of the busiest clubs; i have found a great variety of friendly people and staff who are willing to help with whatever the need may be. The tempo is upbeat here and everyone seems pretty serious in their workouts. There are also several good classes to take. I would give the club a 4 star.... five if they would replace the ugly old ceiling with a more contemporary industrial open look and the old running track carpet. By the way if there are any complaints i would call Bally's at the main headquarters, this is what gets results....

Ratings_icons Is this as good as it gets?

This gym is a total mess. One cleaning station per floor discourages equipment wipe downs. Machines are down/broken often, many very old and are repaired long after complaints. Spin room closed to everyone because someone stole sound equipment (ever consider a lock?) Main manager gets irritated hearing concerns. Try another Bally's, this one apparently not in need of business.
