Please do NOT shop here. We went to go pick up our leucistic rat snake from here, and if we waited any longer there would have been a VERY good chance our snake would have suffered a respiratory infection. They had multiple snakes in one

Cons: You will Pay the extra price. Customer Service Poor!

i walked in to hoffers and i was just amazed, i was so excited to get a new pet. i picked out a super cute mouse and named him Mo not even a year after i got him he began to have frightening seizures, about a month later i woke up and walked over to his cage to see mo had died in the night. due to he pose i think he died of a seizure a friend tolled me there was something wrong with him from the start. hoffers is just eye candy so you wont see what pour condition the pet are in. mo was just one of the many unhealthy pets in that store. if you want a healthy pet go to a shelter NOT HOFFERS!!! if you wont do it for me, do it for mo.

Not one of the best places, expensive pet supplies. I had a small purchase just under $10 and didn't have any cash on me so when I pulled out my credit card I was chastised by an older male employee stating it costs him 90 cents whenever

First of all, their prices are way too high. It's a cool pet shop to go to and look around, but the quality of their animals and the politeness of their staff is lacking. We had purchased a hedgehog from Hoffer's and I wish we had waited and did more research! The poor little guy was in a 10 gallon tank and was probably never played with the whole 6 months he was stuck there. If a pet shop is going to breed their own animals they should socialize their animals as well. It seems that they are not concerned about quality of their animals as much as making a profit. The worker who was helping us was very rude and seemed to be rushing us along because it was coming up to closing time. We did go back to purchase a hairless rat and had much better customer service and the little guy is a lovely pet, but he too was over priced for a rat. I hope this pet store starts treating their animals and customers better in the future.

Update: The hedgehog we purchased from Hoffers died suddenly. According to Hoffers, he was 6 months old when we purchased him. We are pretty sure we were lied to about his age upon purchase. Also, whe rat we purchased developed severe eye problems. Something the vet said was probably genetic. I just can't believe the lack of attention they pay to their animals.

I still think this is a great place to look around because it's interesting, but their prices are too high and their animals are of poor quality, like an animal mill.

Please note, I've come to this conclusion after shopping at Hoffer's MANY, many times over the past few months. I have three rats and a cat and I was driving 30 minutes out of my way to go to this store. This is not the result of one bad experience I had there.

When I first started going to Hoffer's in September of 2010, I thought they were great - mostly because they are huge and they breed their own animals. But the more I went there the more problems I saw - as of now I'm convinced that they are no better than a mill, and for how rude and un-knowledgeable the employees are, plus how poorly they treat and regard their animals, mixed with their expensive prices, I will not be going back.

1) All types of their animals (small animals and reptiles) are crammed into MUCH too small cages, most 10 gallon tanks with more than 12 rats, 5 hamsters, degus, etc. Fyi, rats need at least 2 sq. ft. of space per animal to be truly healthy and happy. Some of the rabbits are 2-3 to a cage. Chinchillas, if their cages are warmed correctly, do not have cooling tiles. It's been a while since I looked at the reptiles but I can't imagine that they would be faring much better. At first this didn't bother me because it seems that they sell small animals very quickly, baby rats are not around for very long, so the conditions are okay in a short period of time.

However, we bought a rat from Hoffer's on Tuesday and he has mycoplasmosis, caused by an organism that most rats carry but not all of them contract the illness - which is highly contagious to rats and mice. It is a respiratory infection that causes a lot of pain in the animal and will severely shorten their life, if not kill them. I took our rat to the vet and got him on antibiotics, but it's very likely that most, if not ALL, of their rats and mice now have this disease.Taking into consideration the fact that I also saw a saleswoman showing another customer a rat who also had a respiratory infection, Hoffer's knows that their animals are sick, but they either do not know how the diseases are transmitted between animals, or they do know and they blatantly disregard it because they are only "$8 animals" (this is what I was told when I addressed this concern).

2) There are THREE employees who were excellent the entire time I've been going there - all (probably) teenage girls, I never got their names. The rest of the employees usually ignore customers or speak downright rude to them. They seem to have very little knowledge about the animals there - most of them seemed surprised whenever I spoke with them about the particulars of owning rats, and when I told the (manager? no idea if he even was, actually) that our rat has Myco, he asked me what it was. Way to go.

3) Prices. I can guarantee that anything you could possibly want from Hoffer's could be found online or at Pet Supplies Plus for cheaper and a better quality.

I highly suggest that anyone who intends to buy an animal from here be prepared to take it to the vet, and if you are a little more willing to find a place that is worthy of your business please do yourself the favor. Look for unwanted animals in the humane society or on petfinder.com before you decide that Hoffer's deserves your money for breeding sick animals and then disregarding their illnesses as unimportant.

First of all, Hoffer's has some of the MOST RUDE employees I've ever come in contact with. I've seen positive reviews where people said they were more knowledgeable than a high-school petsmart employee, and that may be true, but they do

My wife went to Hoeffers to buy a christmas present, and was talked into buying an expensive salt water tank set up because although the no returns policy is usually posted, there was a sign stating that if you received an OK from a manager, you could return the unopened box if you kept the receipt. However when it was decided to return the unopened box, the "owner" became extremely rude, verbally insulting and downright obnoxious. He denied that there was posted a "return if you have the receipt" sign. So basically they allow their sales people to lie. The owner apparently does not believe in the return business concept. This is deceptive business practice at its worst and most flagrant. Hoeffer's, you should go out of business. Foreclosure on your property would be too good an end to you. Up to this time we had spent hundreds of dollars at this place. But no more. Its an interesting place to "look" at pets, but no one should ever shop there any more unless you hope to be ripped off. There are many other options of places to buy pets and supplies in Milwauukee. Perhaps try another place that actually cares and has good business ethics.

My young son wanted to buy two 10 gallon fishtanks and called Hoffers to inquire if they had any in stock and how much they were. We were told that they plenty in stock and that the cost was $10 each. For Hoffers, who traditionally charges more than most other pet supply stores, this seemed like a good deal. Other stores quoted $12 for the same tank.

We arrived and picked up 2 tanks and just as we started walking to the checkout, noticed that the price listed was $20. Perplexed, I asked the guy behind the checkout counter who apparently turned out to be the same person who quoted the $10 price on the phone to my son. He told us that used tanks were $10 but new ones were $20. He implied that it was my sons fault for not asking if the tank was new or used when he called Hoffers initially. I told him that when a customer asks for a retail price of an item, it is normally assumed that they are enquiring about a new item. If we had wanted a used fishtank, we would have asked him if he had any used tanks and what their price was. He should have made it very clear over the phone that the $10 tanks were used but a new one was $20, almost twice the price most other stores charge.

Hoffers engages in deceptive sales practices as described by my experience above. They also have an ??all sales final, no returns whatsoever? policy; very rare in the retail business. While the store is a nice place to visit, they charge so much more than similar stores. I certainly will not be patronizing them again.

Very cool looking store. But the cages they have for their small pets are way too small. Mothers with up to ten babies would be in cages that are around 1x1ft. The degu cages were also too small for them. They would take two steps and already hit another wall. The only cage big enough was the hedgehog's cage. Many staff in that section, but none would ask if you needed help. They were very rough with handling their pets also. Overall, the store had a good variety of animals, food & cages for sale, but the care for the pets didnt meet the animal's needs.

Hoffer's reptile dept is horrible. The staff is rude and will not answer questions. The reptiles are kept in terrible conditions and are way over priced. If one were looking too aquire reptiles they would be much better off getting them from reputible breeders. Two excellent places to look is LLL reptile and BHB Enterpise. Both websites have excellent customer service and high quality reptiles. Even with shipping costs the prices equal out to what you would pay at Hoffer's.

It could be the better of the pet stores around. Worth the drive if you are not located on the NW side of Milwaukee. But unfortunately the service and prices will keep you away. The selection of reptiles and fish is very nice, until you see the prices and try to get some questions answered..... The owner is not much help either. I would recommend other less expensive pet stores or you can always use the internet and get exactly what you want!

After a recent birthday party (yes, birthday party!!) at Hoffer's I would give them 5 & 1/2 stars! CeCe (sp.?) was our "hostess" for my 5 y/o son and 4 y/o daughter's combined party, and it will be hard to compete with the experience in years to come! There was plenty of room/space in the party room, there were perfect decorations (all about animals), and even interesting activities to participate in! Every parent and child had an awesome time and the activities were perfect for their age group, they got to interact with some animals and had a blast!! It was reasonably priced and great value for the money, much more memorable than Chuck E Cheese's. I would highly recommend having a Birthday Party there and I would do it again for my 2 y/o and newborn when they are old enough! You get a 2 hour time slot in the room and for the party which is the perfect amount of time (if not quite enough), they offered me local Pizza delivery places and GREAT customer service in the planning and execution of our party. We chose to limit our party to cake only and took the presents home, which worked out perfect because the children that brought them were so happy to enjoy the animals, everyone forgot about opening presents. (plus it was not the usual chaos of flying wrapping paper and clueless thank you's- i.e., who gave what?, etc..) Thank you Hoffer's and CeCe for making a memorable, if not historic Birthday for my family and friends!!

Went in tonight (12/1/09) to "look" at fish and ended up amazing customer service! Not just to us but also other customers shopping. Lady in Fish Department was very nice and let the kids in front of us in line feed the fish - the kids were sooooo excited. She helped us and sought out answers for everything she didn't know an answer to. We left with alot more information than we knew coming in and were really happy with the 3 associates we encountered during our visit! I will definately be driving 30 mins again out of my way to come here over the other well known competitors out there! Just because the service was soooo great! They also have GREAT selection and we love that they have a membership to get discounts! whoot whoot! :)

thanks again!!!

A few years ago I went to Hoffer's to purchase a baby bearded dragon. First of all, it took me about 15 minutes just to find someone willing to help. I said I wanted a female, so the employee told me the specific dragon I got was a female. Well, it turned out to be a male.. he lied and said that just to make a sale. Anyway, he gave me all sorts of bad advice.. REALLY bad, actually.. so bad it could have cost my bearded dragon his life. They told me to buy their expensive reptile sand and feed him about 20 crickets a week. I later found out that if a baby ingests that sand, it can cause impaction and kill them.. also to feed about 20 crickets a DAY, NOT a week. I confronted them about both issues, they denied it giving them problems, and refused to take the sand back.

Anyway, going back to the day I bought my bearded dragon.. after spending about $300 on him and his supplies, I never even got a word of "thanks" from anyone. I've also gone back several times needing important supplies that they're always sold out of.. and they'd always lie, saying the item would be back in stock a few days later, which was never the case. It ended up being for the better though, as I found the supplies for half the price at other stores such as Petco.

Their animals don't seem to be in the best health, either. One time I went and saw that a baby bearded dragon was lying dead in its tank.. I told the employee, and she looked pissed, saying stuff like "ugh those are expensive, too", never showing any signs of actual sadness that one of their animals died, or even stopping to think that maybe the dragon died because of THEIR care.

Long story short: BAD and unfriendly customer service, BAD advice, BAD prices. I suggest going there only if you absolutely have to buy something that no other store sells.

We went to hoffers after having a horrible expierence at petland. Marc at hoffers was extremely helpful and knowledgable. We ended up purchaseing everything we needed for our water dragon set up and actually got a bigger tank than what we were looking at for only 2 dollars more than petland (same brand). We had an excellent expierance at hoffers and will deffinately be going back, some stuff is more expensive than other places but most of the stuff we purchased was pretty comparable to other stores. I would recommend anyone that is interested in reptiles and needs a little push in the right direction and wants to talk to a very knowledgeable and expieranced reptile owner go see marc at hoffers. He was a great help!!!

I shop at this place only and I repeat ONLY because it??s very close to where I live. This place is overpriced and the customer service is never constant. Sometimes they will be helpful and at other times they just don??t give a hoot.
Specifically speaking about the fish this store claims that it won??t sell any hybrid or ??man made fish? like the flowerhorn. How about we take a stroll down the gold fish section. I??m pretty sure those big ol eyes and short bodies are how mother nature intended it ??hypocrites. All of the fish we keep have been man made for our entertainment or have been captured from their natural habitat and forced into these glass prisons so honestly there is no moral high ground here. I think if people saw flowerhorns and these other fish they??d be amazed. The smaller fish are reasonably price but once they get over the 4-5 inch mark the price soars.

I enjoy going to Hoffers! They have friendly workers, a great selection of animals, and most of the time the workers can give you pretty good care tips!! The cages are clean, the animals are happy, and the customers like me are pleased!

Hoffers Tropic Life Pets used to be one of the best stores in Milwaukee but it is the direct opposite now. I have been running saltwater reef tanks since the early 80's and used to shop there every weekend, now I avoid the place at any cost. They have very high prices (to pay for the building they have I'm sure) corals and saltwater fish look terrible and there is cyanobacteria (red slime algae) in most of their tanks. Customer service is non-existent as no one will ask you if you need help and when I have asked them questions on some more advanced topics I get the old "deer in headlights" stare. This place used to be one of my favorite stores but it seems like ever since they moved to their current location a few years ago they went downhill fast.
If you have small children and want to take them for a free zoo trip then I would recommend Hoffers but if you want quality livestock, good customer service and prices I would recommend shopping elsewhere.

I have been going to Hoffer's since I was a little kid- when they had their old store. Hoffer's has always been kind of high priced- which USED to be okay, because they did sell quality products (however, you could still go somewhere else and get it for cheaper). But now, they overcharge way over what items should be.

Not only are they pricey, but if you walk into the fish room, you will notice that most of the tanks have not been kept up- as some dead fish (which there are a lot of) will stay in the tanks for up to a week before someone will actually notice the dead fish or take the time to take it out. Not only is this a problem, but the invertebrate tanks look as though they have not been cleaned in ten years- and I do not recall them ever looking clean.

The customer service is another issue. Sometimes you will get someone who is truly interested in their job, and takes the time to explain themselves. And then there are the the rest of the employees- unwilling to help and not interested in learning.

I would still recommend that you check out Hoffer's- as they do have a lot to offer. Their experts are knowledgeable- if you can find them. Their selection of animals does beat most other pet stores- I just think they need to keep up and CLEAN their fish room.

am a new fish tank owner...have been to only hoffer's for a lot of helpful support from the fish room. I've lost about half of the fish bought there. I'm ok with it, but when i called and spoke with "Ken", he was rude to me - questioning me..."are you sure that you got them from here???", etc. Now have a snail problem, fish room have been very helpful with this, today i called again, spoke with "Ken", when i asked about putting some cucumber in tank, he muffled the phone and discusted-ly said to a co-worker..."can you believe cucumber in the fish tank to get rid of snails???, ha ha ha" Then i told him that was suggested by the fish room..he gave me his famous quote "that was told to you by us???" - i said "yes!", I'm very disappointed by this. Wouldn't have spoken with him if he didn't ask that i do because the fish room was too busy.

I have been to this store several times, nice layout. However they have THE absolute poorest care of any reptiles I have ever purchased from a pet store. The reptile staff is rude and unwilling to provide their sick animals with proper care, and it isn't limited to just a few animals. After the repeated vet bills from my purchase at Hoffers to cure a sick animal, I will never buy from them again. While visiting other Milwaukee pet stores I found out they have an established reputation for poor care of reptiles. I highly recommend you keep walking instead of buying from Hoffers Tropic life in their reptile department. Evidently the owner has made some poor choices for management of their reptile department. Recently while in Milwaukee I found good healthy animals at another pet store, and was glad to spend the $450.00 elsewhere. I give Hoffer's Tropic Life a big thumbs down, but its your money, don't be fooled by the store. Stupidity reigns supreme in their reptile department. I have over 40 years experience raising healthy reptiles.

When I decided to enter the land the herps (reptiles) I had a ton of questions and needed someone to hold my hand through the process of getting my pet's home ready. I walked around the store for about 10 minutes with no one as much as saying hi. But then, Eric came out from the back reptile room, asking if I needed any help. SO HAPPY he saw me. From that point on, I was in experienced hands from someone who knew more about herps than some experts do. I found their prices to be average, sometimes lower, sometimes higher. The selection was good. I was able to buy everything I needed, minus the plant, to set my cage up. But what takes the cake are their animals. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend Hoffers because their pets are well cared for by knowledgable staff. My chameleon is happy, healthy, and is thriving in his new home. So when you go there, don't be afraid to seek out someone to help you if they don't find you first. It'll be well worth it.

I have shopped here for more years then I can count. I have raised pets and set-up aquariums probably before many of the staff was even born! Although I enjoy the store visually their prices and staff leave a lot to be desired. There are a few exceptions of what I call real customer oriented employees, hopefully you can be lucky enough to work with them. Most of the staff (especially in the fish room...not you Joe!) treats Every customer like they are a complete idiot and novice, even when you explain you are Well educated and knowledgeable on the topic. They seem to override this fact and continue to stroke their own egos by spewing out info you told them you already know. Not every customer is a novice and cares for your ego! Not every piece of info You know or learned is the end all on technique; the fish/pets don't read the books or sit in on meetings; just maybe experience has taught customers a thing or two! These are also the same staff members that act like you are bothering them if you need help. I also observed Friendly staff members who had questions being ignored and treated poorly by these ego driven employees. Shame, shame, letting customers see these behaviors. Wake up and pay attention to who helps give you a paycheck.

I admit, our kids treat Hoffers as an equivalent to going to a small zoo. Every six months or so, we get in the car and go to Hoffers to see ALL their animals. This place is huge. They have unique animals, countless cages and aquariums, and a helpful staff. We don't usually buy much when we go here (cat toys, fish food); however, we definitely enjoy looking at all the animals. They even have alligators and HUGE tortoises.

for how big the store is it is not cheaper than your smaller neighborhood pet store. actually it is a few dollars more than others.
i recently bought 2 baby red bearded dragons from hoffers. now i had a larger dragon but nothing that small before. they told me to feed it 1 to 2 dozen crickets.
about 25 days later one of the dragons died. i thought nothing at the time, but maybe he got sick and just couldn't make it. one more week passed and the other dragon i purchased was lying dead.
now i got curious as to why this happened. after talking to someone who breeds red bearded dragons i learned that you are only supposed to feed it what it eats in one serving because whatever crickets they dont eat, will slowly eat at the dragons. now i feel this is something that they needed to tell me upon purchase.
the next morning i drove across town and walked into hoffers real calm. i just wanted to ask why they did not tell me anything about this. they refused to acknowledge what happened was their fault. on top of that they began to get an attitude with me as if they didn't have time to discuss this. these dragons were about $200 and died because they failed to tell me very important information that caused the deaths of my two guys
they did nothing about this and it seems did not care one bit about my frustration with this. i guess in their world the customer is wrong instead of right and that is nowhere I want to be a customer.

PROS: larger than most
CONS: prices and customer satisfaction

This is a great place for all your pet care needs. They have a wonderful koi garden in the summer with free roaming tortoise's. They have an enormos fish room with hundreds of varieties of fish. They also sell numerous other animals, from cats to birds to snakes to you name it. They are a bit overprice but you could spend hours in there looking at all their neat stuff. They even have birthday parties for the children at a reasonable cost! A great hit!

This store is huge. They have an enormous selection of animal supplies and a wide variety of healthy, active pets. They now also have an adoption center for cats. Be sure to check out the turtle/tortise display. They have a great fish selection. Some products can be a bit more than other pet shops, but not by too much. They do carry a lot of hard to find animal supplies such as ferret cages and food for specific pet diets.

PROS: great selection, healthy animals, helpful staff
CONS: a little more than other pet shops in regards to supplies

Consistently good animal care, helpful staff. I have always gotten good advice from staff at Hoffers, unlike most other pet stores where high school age employees make up answers to questions they don't know instead of finding out or referring you to an employee who is more knowledgeable in the area. Very cool aquarium section.
