I was a student at this school, and the ONLY thing that I actually enjoyed was two of the many cosmetology instructors. Funny thing is, when you have a problem or need answers to any questions Gaya (she's like the principal figure) is either sitting in her office "busy", puts you off, or isn't there anyway. NOT TO MENTION, I had graduated in November, had all my paperwork signed off by Gaya, and got a call in JANUARY from Gaya saying that she messed up my hours and I would have to come back for over 30 hours. The woman constantly tries to cover her butt, and I'm sure she failed to tell this to the owner of the school, who, by the way, only cares about making money and profit. PERIOD.

Pros: Amanda O and Monica

Cons: bad management, organization, and staff treatment

Witness to poor morale with students and staff. Why would you want to sit through that.

Feel very sad for the students, staff and everyone that is involved with this place. Their tactics of harrassment is unbelievable and their students are not happy. Very high stress and tense atmosphere. Customer is not right. All about $$$

I have never had a bad experience here. So you have to pay for parking, about a dollar or two. Never had to wait at all. The students consult with the instructors who are excellent and really look at your hair type for the way to cut it. For the $20 it is an excellent deal.

What an awesome AVEDA experience! These students are absolutely receiving a top notch education in the Beauty industry. First of all, the staff welcomed me with a nice smile, friendly offering of a beverage and a warm moist towel infused with an aroma. This start to my hair cut service was more than what I had expected. While I was there, the student did a consultation with me and the instructor. All I can say is wow that was a great experience. I loved the scalp massage before my haircut! There was a wedding party in at the same time. At least 6 of them and they were having up dos and manicures. Certainly they were enjoying their time as well. This was my first time to a school for a hair cut and I will definitely be back. After reviewing their menu, I learned that they also offer Massages, and Facials. These students are surely on their way to success. They were all very upbeat and full of positive energy. Glad to see they enjoy their school :) NICE JOB!!

I wrote that last review, and I'm still trying to get in. On Tuesday a man on the phone told me they currently had massages on Thursdays and Fridays. I looked at my schedule and called back on Thursday to schedule an appointment for a Thursday only to be told, no, they only have massages on Fridays and Saturdays currently. Unacceptable.

My boyfriend got me a gift certificate to the Institute for Christmas (by the way it is almost August) because I was very stressed at the time and he thought a massage would help. My boyfriend lives in Milwaukee, I live in Chicago, but I visit very often so it shouldn't have been a problem to get in. Wrong. I've called multiple times, and they will be booked up for 2 months. They tell me "call back on this date" so I do, then they only have 2 days a week available, both are days I can't be in Milwaukee. So I think maybe trying a different service would help. Nope, thats all booked up as well.

I explain my situation, thinking maybe they would be willing to book a little extra in advance because of the fact that I live so far away. Every time, unwilling to negotiate. Unwilling to brain storm a way for me to redeem my gift certificate. After all, arn't businesses hoping to cater to customers so they keep coming back? They tell me that I can use it on products if I like. No, I do not like, $50 of products? No thanks, I want a service.

They are also not always open standard business hours, but their answering machine does not tell you what their business hours are so that you know when to call back.

I realize these are student services, that this will be around student scheduals. However, if you charge *near* professional prices, I should be getting *near* professional service. It should not take me 7 months to redeem my certificate. I can't even rate the quality of the service because I can't even get in to receive the service. This has been more stress than the massage could help relieve.

I am currently attending the institute in milwaukee and I think that all of these reviews are incorrect. When you come into a salon atmosphere, that is a school, you should be well aware of what your service will be like. It will not take 45 minutes like in a real salon, because the students need to wait for consultations and suggestions from instructors. If you are really going to bride a whole bridal party into a learning environment like that, you should ask more questions when making an appointment. ask how long it will take. Tell them that you will be wanting a french manicure, so the students can be made aware ahead of time. You are taking your own risks when going to the institute, and i don't feel that it's fair to never return because something took too long. Or wasn't cut the way you wanted. If you are unhappy with a haircut, tell the stylist. They would be more than happy to help you achieve something that is more satisfying for you. It isn't fair to a student for you to get upset because it's taking to long. It only makes them nervous, and that is probably why you now have an uneven cut. I think that people need to go into the institute with more of an open mind, and really take into consideration the students, their learning, and mostly, just their feelings. And plus, would you rather wait an extra 20 minutes for a instructor to check your haircut, or just leave with a terrible, incorrect cut? Just think about it a little harder.

I don't understand what this woman was complaining about. I regularly get services at the Institute and find their students to be on time and never have I experienced this. I have even taken my neice for services and she has not been "shorted" on time. Perhaps arriving late is this lady's problem. Where else can you get Aveda services for discount rates? I would recommend this school to anyone!

I know it seems like you are going to get fabulous services for inexpensive prices here. You are actually gettting exactly what you pay for, which is not much. I scheduled my daughter for an hour massage. Wanted to try it out for her without spending a lot of money. She came out in less than 45 minutes and that included their pre-interview and them coming out to ask me questions. I figure she was lucky if she got even a 15 minute massage, since it was about 25 mintues talking to me about her first. She should have been back there at least an hour. I realize their pre-interview is part of the service, but she wasn't even back there 45 minutes total. She told me they barely did anything. I guess they thought because she was a teenager they could get away with it. I do have a watch and I can tell time...so can my daughter!

I've been to this place about a dozen times. I've had some very good haircuts with senior stylists (they're the $20 haircuts but I would recommend going to them). I have also had some very mediocre cuts. One time my appt. was at 9 am, I was early, and got assigned to my stylist after others had come in after me. That meant that I was way down the line and my stylist didn't seem at all concerned at waiting for a consult from the instructor. Well, I waited 40 mins. and couldn't take it anymore. I left and haven't returned. Yes, I know they're students too but they've been through beauty school already. Also, the haircuts aren't much of a bargain at all for students.

Go at your own risk!

Okay, so I thought I'd give my bridemaids a deal for getting their nails done for my wedding, so we went here (as we were assured that it would be okay to come here for wedding nails--and I wanted a place we could all get in at one time).

Now I KNOW these are students, but OH MY GOD---they were AWFUL! I had a guy (I was the bride) and he took literally an hour and a half to give me just a manicure--and then he couldn't even do the french part of it because "he was too jittery from coffee"...which must be their line because three of my nine bridesmaids also got that from their technicians.

The whole ordeal was almost 3 1/2 hours and was anything but relaxing. I think my 3 year old neice could have given me a better manicure. And the teachers never ONCE came over to check on the students...it was horrific and I will NEVER recommend this place.

Yes, they are students, but come on---you should be able to file a nail! I literally asked if I could just file my own nail at one point. We all got back to the hotel and redid our nails they were that bad!

They should NEVER tell brides to come here!

I have been going to the Institute of Beauty and Wellness since 2001. At first the haircuts and service I had been receiving were excellent, but recently it just doesn't seem the same...

Prices for a haircut have now started to be "from" $15 which seems expensive for a haircut from a student with an instructors help. My haircut ended up at $20, not sure why since I had shorter hair but I did have a senior student. The one hour massage is now $40. I have had a regular massage and a pregnancy massage and they are very nice.

The students do try hard to provide you with great service. Aveda products are always used and are excellent.

The rating of this place would have been higher if the past two haircuts hadn't been cut uneven.

Parking is not free and has to be found by a meter or a downtown lot. If you park at a meter the stylists will feed your meter if you tell them where your car is and give them the money.

PROS: downtown location, friendly, nice atmosphere
CONS: sometimes the cuts aren't that outstanding
