I've been using the Tang Eye Center since 2003 and I just adore them! I have seen them for both a reoccurring eye issue and for annual vision check-ups. Because they are affiliated with UC Berkeley, the examinations are extremely thorough. They do all sorts of checks in addition to the standard glaucoma test. A student generally performs the examination but his work is supervised by one of the heads on duty.
Another big plus is that they are extremely knowledgeable about contact lens, and the variety of plastics and technologies available. I have had problems with contacts in the past but they were able to find me a brand that really works. They'll give you a set and ask you to come back in a week so they can see how they really "fit" on your eye. It took 3 trips but it was worth it to really find something that works.
FYI, your first visit will take about 2 hours, that's how thorough they are.
PROS: Thoughtful, thorough service, reasonable fees,

The Tang Eye Center is the perfect place to go if you are in need of new glasses or contacts. The eye center is run by the students at the Berkeley Optometry School. The students are all kind and thorough (probably because they're nervous). They are all more than willing to make you comfortable. They do however, really like dialating your eyes and may do it a couple of times (i guess they need to practice) but other than that its a great place. The prices are good and students with insurance get 10% off.

I have had eye exams performed at University Eye Center for a number of years now. The equipment is top notch since these are optometric grad students who do the exam (corroborated by a licensed eye specialist). I feel that the exam is highly comprehensive (glaucoma, peripheral vision, etc), carefully and thoughtfully accomplished each time. I have had exams for glasses as well as for contacts. Fees are excellent. The Optical Center is lovely with a great selection of frames. Parking is limited around the entrance, but patients may park in an adjacent lot and either walk a short distance or use the shuttle service. Appointments are not too hard to get and very little waiting is required.

They are very flexible in scheduling and you don't have to wait an hour before they call your name. Graduate students assist in your exams, but everything is double checked by a doctor. The cost is much cheaper than a standard optometrist. They also don't pressure you to buy glasses and products from them.
