I am a local boulder resident and I have shopped at and supported McGuckins for 8 years now. I am terribly disappointed and appalled with their business practices. I am another local business so I always choose to support local companies. I will be shopping at Home Depot or Liberty Hardware (another local business in South Boulder) from now on, they have better prices anyways.

I went there over the weekend to buy a tree stand and get a piece of weather stripping cut (that I bought at McGuckins last week). Knowing McGuckins policies, when I walked in with my already purchased item, I went right up to a cashier with receipt in hand to alert them I was bringing in merchandise to get cut.

I got my piece cut and found my tree stand and took my items to the check out. I went back to the same cashier, told her I had my item cut, gave her the tree stand and she rang me up. She told me my total, I paid and left. Once I was out of the store and at my car three men ran after me. Two men were in plain clothes and one had a McGuckins vest on. The first man in plain clothes told me that I stole the cutting. He then accused me of taking the price sticker off of my cut merchandise. Just an FYI for all readers, my merchandise was in a clear bag and the brown masking tape with the $1 charge for the cut was visible. He was shouting and shaking.

I immediately volunteered both my receipts showing I had paid (which he never asked for before he began accusing me). I told him how awful this was and if this was how they were going to treat customers I was not going to come back. He then began shouting loudly at me that I was a thief and was not welcome back in the store. I told him I would not be coming back, he said "good". He completely embarrassed me in front of a whole coffee shop of people, all the other people in the McGuckins tree lot and surrounding parking lot.

I was very shaken and marched back in the store demanding to speak with a manager. I spoke with store manager demanding an apology from the man who approached me and wanting to return all the merchandise I bought. She let me return the merchandise and apologized on his behalf but that was it, she walked away.

When I was returning the merchandise (at this point I was completely in tears, crying in front of the whole store) the man who initially approached me outside and accused me of stealing, came running back up to me at the cash register shouting that I was a thief, telling me I wasn't allowed in store and not to complete my return. The store manager then began walking back up to me and he shirked away into a nearby aisle. I told her this was the man who approached me in the parking lot and his treatment of me was unacceptable. I'm totally balling at this point. I demanded to know his name and told her I was going to report his to the BBB. She would not give me his name or console me.

She goes off and speaks with him then comes back to me and tells me he was just doing his job and I did not pay for the cut. All this over a dollar, ONE DOLLAR, it's sickening!!!! If anyone during this whole altercation had said the cashier made a mistake and did not charge you for the ONE DOLLAR cutting I would have happily paid for it. I immediately leave the store sick of being embarrassed further and do not wait for another apology I will never get.

I contact the store manager again once I get back from my house. She keeps with her rhetoric that he was just doing his job. I would like to think that McGuckins has not trained their security people to belittle, embarrass and humiliate their customers, but I guess I was wrong. She gets so exacerbated with me that she asks, "ma'am what do you want me to do fire him?". She also tells me that her security guards are acting under the impression that they could get stabbed by approaching a shop lifter. If that was the training course you think he wouldn't have initially approached me yelling accusations and calling me names, especially if I was going to shank him over a dollar, when I just purchased over $20 of other merchandise AND my other receipt that I furnished him from last weeks trip showed I purchased over $85.

This whole situation could have been addressed and handled much better. He could have approached me and said I think theres been a mistake at checkout lets go inside and figure it out, etcetera. They have chased away a loyal, McGuckins loving customer with their GESTAPO, "RENT A COP" security guards (they have patrolling their store in plain clothes).

This is disgusting behavior McGuckins! I am deeply saddened and appalled by your treatment of your customers. If all you care about is shoplifters you've picked the wrong girl because Ive spent over thousands of dollars at your store over eight years and I've NEVER stolen anything in my whole life!

This is a true Boulder gem. From kitchen to plumbing and anything in between. Talk about service- this is where it all started. There are collage students and a few folks that look like they belong in a nursing home working here. That gives you equality and knowledge. A true old school Boulder business that gives and caters to everyone. If you can't find it here...........they will inform you where.
We like going here when we have time to just burn. The prices could be better but if you look close not by much.
Please support and help keep this hardware store alive and well in our town.
Pay the few cents extra, stay away from the big boxes and shop at McGuckin's whenever you can.

On Feb. 18, 2007 at 4:30pm me & 2 of my roommates went to McGuckin Hardware & bought 2 fuses for our soda vending machine. When we first came in I picked up a pair of tacky cheap sunglasses and wore them down an aisle jokingly asking my friends if it was my look. They said so no & I put them down. On our way out the door I was approached by two plain clothed men who did not identify themselves. They got in my face & started asking questions about a pair of sunglasses. We thought they were 2 crazy homeless guys so I tried to just go around them. It was at this time that the men took more aggressive measures. They would not let me leave. They started accusing me of theft and demanded that I reenter the store and retrace my steps. They demanded for me to open my pockets and lift my shirt. They just kept hassling me and hounding me I had no idea where these sunglasses were. They were calling me a liar. I couldn't find the sunglasses and got fed up with their unfounded accusations and thus left. When I returned home I called the manager. I told him that right after I made a purchase with them they accuse me of theft and he began to get short with me. I told him that the men who approached me did not identify themselves as McGuckin employees. I also told him that they were very rude and aggressive. None of this seemed to bother him. In fact he told me that just shopping at McGuckin's was my privilege and that if a customer picks up any item and places it anywhere other than the exact location where it was found that they are acting suspicious and can be searched. I told him that I shop at McGuckin??s often and that I was both shocked and disappointed by this incident. He talked down to me just as rudely as the two plain clothed men did. Never in my life had I been so insulted and humiliated before. I have never stolen anything in my life. They showed no remorse when I showed them that I didn??t have the sunglasses. They handled the incident with extreme arrogance.

if you are questioning yourself on how exciting a hardware store could be? Check this place out. McGuckin's has IT ALL, and tons of variations of everything to boot! The sales people are very helpful, and for some reason know where everything is. The place is jammed with stuff, but not in a cluttered, grandma's house type of way :) it's just got something for everyone! Their products are very good quality, but can be a little more expensive than other place, but where else can you go to get such variety? They have some interesting items there too, very inventive ideas! It's a fun place to shop, or even just to browse. It gives off a clean, spacious, greenhousy type of feel. Check it out!

If you need it, McGuckin's got it. Seriously! It's WAAAYYY more than just hardware. This store is jampacked with everything from dog bones to houseplants, kitchenware and camping gear. The place is teeming with friendly, green-aproned employees to offer assistance. And you might think a mom and pop store like this is way more expensive than the chains, but I've found some really great deals there. McGuckin is loved by the locals and is becoming a Boulder icon.

I'm a romantic for old-town hardware stores. McGuckin's is the most magical new-town hardware store I've encounterd. They do, in fact, have everything. Considering the easy access we have to 'everything' these days, inventory is not the magic ingredient. You'll have to go yourself to find out how the set themselves apart from corporate chains Sutherlands, Home Depot, etc.

I'm not really into hardware stores, but I actually enjoy going to McGuckin Hardware! In addition to general hardware stuff like fasteners, tools, nuts & bolts, you can find a garden center full of plants & trees (even Bonsais!), art supplies, pet food & toys, and Holiday decorations. The store has a laid back attitude- you can bring your dog (on a leash please!) while you shop. This is a comfortable alternative to a traditional hardware store, and a great place to go if you're accompanied by someone who doesn't enjoy spending hours looking for the right light switch.
